pulled into the water, the young girl, by a sea lion on canada's west coast. authorities there blaming her parents. the family was allegedly feeding the sea lions seconds before it grabbed the girl. no one was hurt. those are our top stories on this monday may 22nd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we do say good morning to you, everybody, on this monday. we're going to start this half hour with president trump eyeing middle east peace as he arrives in israel this morning. >> the president is coming off a trip from saudi arabia where he addressed the leaders of nearly every muslim country. the president called for unity in the war on terror and challenged the muslim world to lead fight against extremists. >> so his speech took on a measured tone. he avoided the tone that he used on the xhan often, radical islamic terrorism, saying the battle is not between different faiths. >> this is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life and decent people, all in the name of religion. this is a battle between good and evil. when we see the scenes of destruction in the wake of terror, we see no signs that those murdered were jewish or christian, shia or sunni. >> well, the leaders of dozens of majority muslim countries were there at that hearing. but iran was not invited to the graerth. both president trump and the saudi king salman harshly condemned iran as a state sponsor of terrorism. >> and president trump is taking u.s. policy in a different direction when it comes to publicly speaking out about human rights and women's rights. >> but the first lady and first daughter are taking on the issues themselves, attending several events focused on empowerment. we get more now from abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: two days in saudi arabia, and president trump never once publicly mentioned human rights. and women's rights just a passing mention in his speech on extremism. >> it means standing together against the murder of innocent muslims, the oppression of women, the persecution of jews, and the slaughter of christians. >> reporter: aides say he did address human rights behind the scenes. but publicly his message was clear. >> we are not here to lecture. we are not here to tell other people how to live, what to do, who to be or how to worship. >> reporter: ivanka trump did meet with saudi women leaders, telling them their country's progress is encouraging but there's still a lot of work to be done. and the first lady visited an all-women business center, where she was asked about work-life balance. her response? you need to balance and find the time. >> one of the basic rights that women in saudi arabia still don't have, they're not legally allowed to drive. most women rely on a driver or even uber. on the streets of the capital city of riyadh, women and men living in segregated worlds. and even though the president didn't publicly address it, it did come up. this photo of a sea of men at a technology conference he attended raising eyebrows online. a saudi official fired back with a photo of his own, saying the center does have women, here on the second floor. and during the president's visit country star toby keith held a free concert. american flags lined the stage. but in the audience men only. women not allowed. there is one law that did recently change here. until recently women couldn't go to work or school or even a hospital for basic services without the permission of a man in their family. that is no longer the case. but they still can't travel abroad without the permission of a male relative. cecilia vega, abc news, riyadh, saudi arabia. >> our thanks to cecilia there. back here at home, billy bush is breaking his silence about that controversial video with donald trump that imploded his career, all of it taking place at the height of the campaign. bush tells "the hollywood reporter" that looking back on it he wishes he had changed the subject. he was suspended, then fired from his job at nbc, and he says his life has been a roller coaster ever since. bush sat down for his first tv interview since that happened with abc's robin roberts. you can hear more from him later today on "good morning america." north kraen leader kim jong un calls his country's latest missile test perfect. the solid fuel medium to long-range ballistic missile flew about 300 miles. that adds to north korea's weapons capabilities because solid rocket fuels can be fired faster and are more difficult to detect. japan calls the launch a "challenge to the world." to mt. everest now, where three climbers have died and a fourth remains missing. they were on a different expedition at the time from different countries. one was a doctor from alabama who died not far from the summit. this is all on the nepal side. roland yearwood has survived an earthquake that was triggered, avalanche there on the world's highest peak there two years ago, but now passing away. the cause of death unknown. the man charged in last week's deadly mayhem in new york city's times square says he knew he needed help. the navy veteran richard rojas tells "the new york post" he wanted to fix his life and was supposed to speak to a mental health counselor today. reportedly on suicide watch, rojas right now. he told the paper he wants to apologize to all the victims' families and his mother. and there is a happy ending to a rescue operation for a humpback whale in southern california. the 35-foot-long whale was spotted in ventura harbor on saturday. the whale appeared to be trapped among the docks. it even hit the rear of a boat at one point. experts used an underwater speaker that played whale noises to then guide the whale out of the aharbor. mission successful. >> yes. also this weekend we got a reminder that kids are kids, even when they come from royal families. >> yeah. even if they're going to be the future king. talking about the wedding here for pippa middleton. and prince george was in the party. he's 3 years old now. he's usually all smiles and charm. but he got a scolding from mom after a bit of a meltdown outside of the church. look at that. aw. >> we've all been at that wedding, right? morning evelyn couldn't use her legs and could barely move her arms. her parents rushing her to the e.r. doctors immediately having an idea what was wrong. >> they just went straight into grooming her hair and found it. >> reporter: a tiny american dog tick found in evelyn's hair. once doctors removed the insect the little girl's condition started to improve. evelyn's parents say doctors diagnosed her with tick paralysis. >> it took her until pretty much the next morning before she was really able to walk normally again. >> reporter: as the weather gets warmer, the outdoors teeming with ticks, making them more likely to come in contact with kids. bugs bringing big problems like lyme disease, colorado tick fever, and more than a dozen other illnesses. >> the best way to remove the tick if pronounce sri lanka? >> sri lanka? >> sri lanka or sri lanka. >> however you want. >> number two on the list, a little closer to home. cuba. >> cuba is cheap because the airlines now that they're allowed to fly there, there's been a ton of capacity in the marketplace, which means really low prices for consumers. i had friends just book from new york nonstop for around $215. it was cheaper to go to cuba than it was to miami for a weekend. >> then that said i used to travel -- i traveled there legally before president obama made the changes. it was quite pricey once you're there in cuba on the ground. hotel prices were insane. food insane. >> the trick with cuba is don't stay in the hotels. they're overpriced and they're really old. i would highly recommend staying air bnb. you can now rest in a casa, stay at someone's house, 30 bucks a night. and yes, the food can be expensive but not if you go to local places and just get simple, you know, lobster and rice. >> and the casa comes into play as well when it comes to the food because -- >> you can eat with the host family that you're staying. these are not like air bnbs where you rent a house. you stay in someone's actual house and eat their amazing food. >> there are many restaurants where people are just cooking in their homes. that's where jay-z and beyonce went when they were there. >> at they stayed at hotel saratoga which is probably the most expensive. >> as you would expect them to do. then you talk about moroccan small towns. small towns in north africa. >> there are a lot of really cool towns in morocco. outside of the big city. marrakesh is expensive nowadays. although you can stay in riyaz for not so much. the cool thing is if you're in europe you can tack on a trip to morocco, easy jet flies there, really, really cheap. even if you're in europe you can tack on a trip to africa and experience amazing culture and go through the the countryside. travel between cities is really cheap. so there's really cool towns like esuera that your buck goes a long way. >> let me race through the next two. bulgaria. >> yeah. many people don't have bulgaria on their list. >> they don't even know where it is. >> it's often the cheapest european capital sofia. it's a really cool culture. and the euro is at all-time lows. it's just over a dollar. it's a cheap city. plus the euro's at an all-time low, which means primetime for u.s. dollar. >> okay. and then we go to south america for the last one. ecuador. >> ecuador. there's nonstop flights on jetblue. they've got really low fares so you can fly there nonstop. kind of like sri lanka. really cheap food once you get there. hotels are cheap. it's unbelievably beautiful. and if you want to splurge you can go to the galapagos. those cruises are expensive. but there's plenty of beach towns and temples and culture to be had in ecuador. >> you added quite a few places to my list that i didn't even think about. >> that's what travel's all about. in the birthplace of islam. the man who had portrayed muslims as the problem offering a message of unity in the fight against terrorism. >> this is not a battle between different faiths, different sects, or different civilizations. this is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek obliterate human life and decent people, all in the name of religion. this is a battle between good and evil. >> reporter: in the audience the leaders of more than 50 muslim countries, virtually the entire islamic world. a remarkable moment for the man who just a year ago said -- >> i think islam hates us. there's something -- there's something there that there's a tremendous hatred there. >> reporter: and for the candidate who had proposed a total and complete shutdown of all muslims entering the u.s., a prohibition that would have applied to everyone in this audience. >> i stand before you as a representative of the american people to deliver a message of friendship and hope and love. >> reporter: but he did issue a challenge. >> a better future is only possible if your nations drive out the terrorists and drive out the extremists. drive them out of your communities. drive them out of your holy land. and drive them out of this earth. >> reporter: the president's call to action notably left out a signature phrase, which he had long ago insisted was crucially important. >> radical islamic terrorism. >> reporter: it wasn't just semantics. trump had hammered both barack obama and hillary clinton for failing to say radical islamic terrorism. now he portrayed the enemy as a godless enemy of all religions, including islam. >> religious leaders must make this absolutely clear. barbarism will deliver you no glory. piety to evil will bring you no dignity. >> reporter: the president travels from saudi arabia to israel where he'll be meeting with israeli leaders and palestinian leaders. it's not the beginning of peace talks. these will be separate meetings. but the administration to jonathan there. and the president barely touched on women's rights, but his daughter took up the issue. ivanka trump met with saudi arabian women telling them their country's progress is encouraging. women in that country only recently got the right to vote but still aren't allowed to drive cars. first lady melania trump visited a woman's business center where her advice -- where she offered some advice on work-life balance. now, both women decided not to adhere to the custom of covering their heads. women and men are segregated in saudi arabia. as we mentioned, women aren't allowed to drive, and they can't leave the country without the permission of a male relative. the head of the house oversight committee expects to speak with former fbi director james comey today. congressman jason chaffetz says he wants to see the notes comey reportedly kept on his meetings with president trump as he investigated russian election meddling. he also expressed concern over a report that the president called comey a nut job during a meeting with russian diplomats. comey has agreed to testify before the senate intelligence committee after memorial day. maybe the vice president mike pence didn't necessarily think graduates would literally take his advice. he told them to stand up for what they believe in. and dozens did. pence was about to deliver the commencement address at notre dame, talking about freedom of speech and the right to air unpopular views, but before he'd said more than thank you, about 150 graduates and family members got up and walked out. the former indiana governor did not comment on that silent protest. and pence's predecessor was also giving a commencement address over the weekend at tiny colby college in maine. joe biden said everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. he told the graduates to stay engaged despite the ugliness of the last election and the divisiveness. he followed and promised that this too shall pass. >> but i assure you it's temporary. i assure you it's transitory. the american people will not sustain this attitude. and now is the time for engaged leadership. >> biden reminded everyone that elections do have consequences and the penalty good people pay for not being involved in politics is being governed by people worse than themselves. >> reporter: north korea's raising new concerns this morning, calling its latest missile test a success. that missile fired yesterday was a medium-range solid fuel ballistic missile, which is harder for the u.s. to detect. south korea and the u.s. believe the launch provided the north with some meaningful data to improve its weapons program. it's also believed north korea's goal is a missile that could reach the mainland united states. today we'll hear from nba player enes kanter about his weekend ordeal in romania. the turkish-born oklahoma city forward was detained when his passport was ruled invalid. kanter claims it's because he's been outspoken against turkish president erdogan. kanter arrived in the u.s. yesterday. he posted a picture on twitter. he's speaking to reporters in a conference call today. new overnight, we've learned three of five inmates who escaped in alabama have been found. all five vanished from a jail about 60 miles outside montgomery, alabama late saturday night. not sure exactly how they got away but one local tv station reporting that one suspect turned himself in yesterday. two others were carpeted. the two still on the run are considered armed and dangerous. jury selection begins today in bill cosby's sex assault trial. cosby is expected to be in that pittsburgh courtroom as lawyers choose the 12 jurors and six alternates. the group will have to decide whether he drugged and molested a temple university employee at his home. cosby claims the encounter was consensual. the trial is set to begin june 5th. drenching rain is swamping much of the south central u.s. this morning following a long weekend of nasty damaging weather. southern indiana was especially hard hit by rushing water turning streets into fast-moving rivers and engulfing entire neighborhoods. and in alabama flash floods washed out highways, stranding some people in their cars. the water was so deep in some spots they were almost unrecognizable. >> that's supposed to be a parking lot. >> once you usually enter muslim leaders in saudi arabia. >> the president wrapped up a two-day visit there with a sober speech on extremism. he's dramatically toned down his language on islam, slamming iran and calling on the muslim world to stand united against terrorism. abc's karen travers has more. >> reporter: president trump surrounded by leaders of nearly every muslim country. an incredible photo op. unthinkable just months ago. the president issuing a direct call. muslim nations must take the lead in fighting terrorism. >> america is prepared to stand with you in pursuit of shared interests and common security. but the nations of the middle east cannot wait for american power to crush this enemy for them. >> reporter: left behind on this first overseas trip, the fiery rhetoric from the campaign trail. >> i think islam hates us. >> reporter: instead the president focusing on building relationships and coalitions, getting muslim nations to work together. >> a better future is only possible if your nations drive out their terrorists and drive out the extremists. >> reporter: the speech was the centerpiece of the president's two-day visit to saudi arabia. this morning a whirlwind schedule of one-on-one meetings with some of those same middle east leaders. and while the president has received a very warm welcome here, critics say that's because he's avoided any tough talk on human rights and isn't pushing for democratic reforms as president obama did. >> we are not here to tell other people how to live. instead we are here to offer partnership. >> reporter: the first overseas speech for president trump very well received in that ornate auditorium. the king of saudi arabia even echoing the president's call for muslim countries to step it up in the fight against terrorism. president trump making it very clear, the choice is simple. be on the good team or the bad team. karen travers, abc news, are you traveling with the president in saudi arabia. as the president travels, the former fbi director that he fired has agreed to testify on capitol hill. james comey set to testify publicly before the senate intelligence committee. this as "the new york times" reports the president called comey "a nut job" during his oval office meeting with russian diplomats. according to the "times," he also allegedly told them, "i faced great pressure because of russia. that's taken off." administration officials acknowledge that comey's firing came up but pushed back against the paper's account. >> the firing had been in the news, but i didn't know in advance that the president was going to raise it. >> that's not my interpretation certainly of the conversation. and i think what the president was trying to convey to the russians is look, i'm not going to be distracted by this -- all these issues that are here at home, that affect us domestically. >> the republican chair of the house oversight committee says he expects to speak with comey today. he wants to see notes that comey reportedly kept on his meetings with the president. the president's budget proposal is due out tomorrow, and it could be a tough one. it includes massive cuts to social programs, especially medicaid and food stamps, as well as federal worker pensions and farm subsidies. it does have funding for infrastructure projects as well as the wall along the mexican border but reportedly cuts aid to many foreign countries. storm clouds are opening up this morning from south texas into the ohio valley bringing more wet weather to some already swamped areas. downpours triggered flash flooding across much of southern indiana submerging homes and businesses. in alabama torrential rains swamped roadways, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. the city of montgomery alone got more than eight inches. and in atlanta storms knocked down trees throughout the city and created power outages as well. crews are still trying to restore electricity there. and there's plenty of that wet weather still to come. >> accuweather meteorologist cam tran joins with us now with a look at the forecast. cam, good morning. >> good morning, kendis and diane. we are looking at the threat of severe weather across the texas panhandle including lubbock and amarillo, thanks to an upper-level system moving in. while further east along the i-10 corridor east of houston we have flood watches in effect. we could be seeing anywhere from two to four inches of rainfall today thanks to this stubborn frontal boundary bringing some drenching downpours. out west we are looking at some record challenging heat. we're talking about the 90s in portland today. the 80s in seattle. diane and kendis, back to you. >> thanks, cam. the fbi is now investigating a fatal stabbing at the university of maryland as a possible hate crime. the student -- the suspect i should say, a student at the school, is allegedly a member of a racist facebook group. the victim was an african-american student at another school and had just been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the army. he was due to graduate college tomorrow. a michigan firefighter is out of the hospital this morning after he became the focus of a dramatic situation. officials say he was trapped in a burning gas station for two full minutes, which must have felt like a lifetime as fellow firefighters rushed to save him. here's abc's adrienne bankert. >> oh, my god! oh, my god! >> reporter: it happened in one heart-stopping moment. this convenience store engulfed in flames. the front of the building collapses, crushing a firefighter at this michigan gas station. >> there's a fireman down. >> get him out. get him out, get him out, get him out! >> reporter: cameras rolling as flames rage around him, burning dangerously close to gas pumps. >> 10-4 we've got this building pretty much fully involved. >> reporter: the firefighter trapped under the debris more than half a dozen first responders frantic, adrenaline pumping, lifting that metal frame, desperately trying to pull him out something, with their bare hands. another dousing flames with a fire hose. >> my last caller was a passerby and advised it looks like that there's still people in the building. >> reporter: witnesses calling for help shocked by what's unfolding in front of them. just 2 1/2 minutes later -- applause as the man is pulled out. amazingly seen up and walking around. >> he's standing. so okay. thank god. >> reporter: that firefighter pulled from the flames treated for second-degree burns and bruising. last performance at the nassau coliseum in new york. the circus is closing for good after slumping ticket sales and growing condemnation from animal rights activists. the decision has put about 400
