>> and more than a dozen water rescues already performed this morning in houston. you can see some of the images coming out. new numbers indicate more than 8 inches of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours, 6 of it came in just 6 hours from about midnight till 6:00 a.m. this is all from a stationary front and it's still going. the flash flood warnings still in place here houston, mississippi back through arkansas, that front doesn't move a lot, it bubbles around and you will see more rain, birmingham back through central mississippi, even central georgia including atlanta, a lot of rain today. george. >> okay, ginger, thanks. the latest on president trump. he is camped out in betsy devos, new jersey, meeting with his health secretary tom price. how to handle insurance companies facing the loss of government funds at the top of the agenda. the opioid crisis as well and vice president pence expected later this weekend. a government report shows climate change has had a big impact and that's at odds with the president and his top official. no word on whether they will dismiss or address the report. trump's support from his base is slipping. strong approval of the president has dropped from 73% in february to 59% now. more on this from our chief white house correspondent jon karl and, jon, let's begin with the polls. the president was tweeting yesterday his base is getting bigger every day. this poll at odds with that. >> reporter: directly at odds with that and, george, we've seen the president's numbers come down as we've mentioned before. historically low for a president this early in his first term. and, george, the team at the white house really has a choice here to make. does the president try to reverse those numbers by expanding his base, by reaching out to those who are not traditional trump supporters or do they further try to energize his base and it seems that that's the direction that they believe that he needs to go, which is to go further to the right, further to energize and to get going his hard core supporters but right now those supporters seem to be softening. >> that certainly seems to be the tact he's taking with his tweets, that extended tirade against richard blumenthal attacking him for failing to serve in vietnam even though he was in the marine reserves at the time and comes from a president who didn't serve at all. >> reporter: exactly right who actually got more deferments than senator blumenthal and he's also been going at "the new york times" quite aggressively. most of his tweets over the last 24, 36 hours have been about sidney blumenthal or continuing to call "the new york times" the failing "the new york times," so much so that "the times" is responding put out a statement to respond to the president on this. take a look at this. "the times" saying the facts matter. we just reported 3.3 million paid subscription, our most ever and our stock is up nearly 50% this year directly responding to the president. >> the president already up and active on twitter. he seems simply to be doing a running commentary on "fox & friends" and retweeting their stories. >> reporter: it's really something else, george. we've seen this over and over again. this morning, most interesting he retweeted a story on "fox and friends" that seems to be based on a leak of classified information about spy satellites over north korea, u.s. spy satellites, exactly the kind of leaks that the white house has been condemning, but there the president is apparently interested in what's on "fox & friend friends". >> presumably this is the kind of thing he could learn from his own intelligence officials yet he seems to publicize it when he sees it on television. >> reporter: he gets the presidential daily briefing a little later. the first is "fox & friends". >> jon karl, thanks very much. >> quite bizarre. now to that memo rocking the tech world. google firing an engineer behind a document that questions women's roles in the industry. google saying the memo promotes gender stereotypes. abc's nick watt has the details, joins us from los angeles. good morning, nick. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, google's ceo reportedly rushing back from vacation to handle the fallout from this ten-page memo written by a male he can near that includes lines like women on average have more n neuroticis and abilities of men and women differ in part due to "bachelorette liv biological causes. he also accuses google of a left wing bias. now, late yesterday the 28-year-old engineer james damore was fired. google's ceo saying portions of the memo violate our code of conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace. now, damore trending on twitter overnight and splitting opinions slammed bysome for a perceived misogynist point of view and others saying he was gagged accusing them of censorship. google already fending off a lawsuit from the department of labor alleging discrimination, google which does employ more men than women denies the charge and claims not to have a gender pay gap. >> so what is the fired engineer saying this morning? >> well, this morning he is confirming by e-mail to news outlets that he was fired for, he says, perpetuating gender stereotypes and he is right now, he says, exploring possible legal remedies. the story, robin, far from over. >> the story and the issue far from over. >> fierce debate. we switch gears to down south. a manhunt for the killer of a police officer during a routine traffic stop in missouri. the victim's family is speaking out as the drag234net continues grow. alex perez is on the scene. >> reporter: this all happened very quickly. the officer pulled the suspect over and within seconds, the suspect was shooting at him. this morning, an all out manhunt for a suspect they're calling a cold-blooded killer. ian mccarthy accused of shooting and killer an officer rookie. >> shots fired. officer down. >> reporter: sunday night around 10:45 officer michael pulled mccarthy over because his headlies were out and mccarthy immediately getting out of his vehicle and shooting at the officer who was able to return fire even after he was shot. but the suspect sped away. >> suspect believed to be running on foot from that location, subject is still armed. >> reporter: the 39-year-old has an extensive criminal background including an outstanding 2013 arrest warrant for assault and at least a dozen other criminal charges in new hampshire. >> it was cowardly for him to just jump out and maambush offir michael. >> officer michael was an army vet, stepfather of two and had only been with the force for about a year. >> he's my hero. right. he's my big brother. that's it. he was always the light of my world. i will miss him but i had a great time with him. >> reporter: and family members say officer michael always wanted to be a police officer and was doing his dream job, some 60 investigators here now working this case around the clock. robin. >> so sad. alex, thanks. now to another manhunt. police in ohio looking for two men suspected of opening fire during a road rage incident and shooting a 4-year-old boy. just the latest in a spike of violent road rage incidents all across the country and abc's diane macedo is here with those details. >> good morning. this cleveland mother was driving with two kids in the car when she says they were followed and shot at, all this after she honked her horn. this morning cleveland police are warning the public after a 4-year-old was shot in the head in a possible road rage incident. the boy's mother says it started when she honked her horn at a stopped car sunday. the car followed her and opened fire. police say the suspects are still on the loose warning there may have been two gunmen. >> these people are very violent and don't have much regard for human life. >> reporter: this latest incident comes just two days after a man was caught on video in dallas pointing a gun directly at another driver. >> somebody like that needs to be off the street. >> reporter: victoria best says she started filming when she noticed the car was driving erratical erratically. police say they identified a possible suspect >> we're waiting for phone calls to see if he pointed it at anybody else. >> reporter: a recent analysis found incidents involving a gun more than doubled from 248 in 2014 to 627 last year. last month the driver of this red pickup truck was charged with first degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing an 18-year-old over a traffic merge. >> somebody didn't want her to merge in a lane of traffic. and because of that a young woman is dead today. >> reporter: such a sad story but lucky for this 4-year-old boy, it seems his will not end that way. he survived that shooting and we're told he's in serious condition but expected to recover. >> oh, that is good news. all right, diane, thank you very much. what is going on? >> crazy. >> it is crazy out there. we'll turn to a family searching for answers after their dog died in a cargo hold of a united airlines plane when their flight was delayed on the tarmac for two hours. jim avila has the story. >> reporter: lulu was part of the family, five years old, a cavalier king charles spaniel. her owners say their vet signed off on her health so she was loaded into the cargo section of a united flight from houston to san francisco. the flight was delayed on the ground in houston for two hours according to lulu's family facebook post which reports when we went to pick her up, she was dead. united has a special animal cargo policy and facilities called pet safe that include air conditioned climate controlled holds in the air on board transport vehicles and warehouses on the ground. their website assures pet owners of comfort in any weather conditions and that pets will be the last ones loaded and the first ones off the plane's cargo area. still, according to the department of transportation's statistics, from 2014 through 2016, of the 26 pet deaths during transport, united had nine, more than any other u.s. carrier. the humane society warns that cargo hold travel should always be a last resort and in the summer, middle of the day flights should be avoided and some dogs should not fly at all. >> unfortunately, for lulu and her family, lulu had a -- what we call smooshed in face which made her more susceptible to the extreme heat conditions. >> reporter: the airline says in a statement they are so sorry to learn of lulu's passing. they've offered condolences and assistance to the family and promise a thorough review of the incident. another tip from the humane society if you must bring your dog along and it's too big to fit under the seat, personally tell the pilot or co-pilot that the dog is there or a flight attendant because they can then watch out and be extra vigilant about whether or not it's too hot in the cargo area. george. >> that does make sense. jim, thanks very much. we move on to new developments in that hbo hack. e-mails from one of the company's top executives has been leaked online along with secret scripts from "game of thrones" as the hackers demand a huge ransom. abc's linzie janis is here with the story. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: the hackers dumping more data this morning bragging that their hack of hbo is the biggest leak in the cyberspace era. it comes just as the network aired the fourth episode in the latest season of its "game of thrones" to more than 30 million viewers worldwide. overnight another massive data dump. among the second round of files, e-mails from an executive at the company as well as more documents related to "game of thrones." including an upcoming script from an unaired episode and financial balance sheets for the company. >> "the hollywood report" received a message demanding a ran sam from hbo. the hacker claims the network is their 17th target and it took six months to access the company's database. a rep for hbo says while the investigation is still ongoing, the review to date has not given us reason to believe that our e-mail system as a whole has been compromised. the massive cyberhack began last week. >> it's hard for me to fathom. >> reporter: stealing 1.5 terabytes of data, seven times bigger than the 2014 attack on sony pictures and equivalent to about 500 hours' worth of movies. >> i see quite a lot there. >> reporter: unaired episodes of hbo shows "ballers" and "room 104" have also surfaced on line. they're have you ever gone to a taylor swift concert? jury experts say they are celebrity can be a big advantage. >> miss swift's team will want somebody who just sees stars when they see taylor swift and is going to believe everything that comes out of her mouth. >> reporter: potential jurors also face tougher questions like have you ever been inappropriately touched or been wrongly accused of inappropriately touching someone. one man said he could not be impartial because a friend was once sexually assaulted. he was dismissed. >> fair and impartial is certainly what the goal is, but anybody who is working for one team or the other, you're going to be looking for the juror that you think is going to be siding more with your view of the case. >> reporter: on that infamous photo one woman said she's seen it but is keeping an open mind. they hope to have eight jurors seated by noon then opening statements. now taylor swift is required to be here for the entire nine-day trial and she is expected to testify. george. >> okay, clayton, thanks. let's talk to dan abrams about this. he laid it out. pretty tricky to pick a jury in these circumstances. starting with taylor swift's celebrity. >> that's right and the first thing you do have a form where the jurors answer all these questions and one of them is are you a taylor swift fan. do you have family members who are taylor swift fans and get rid of the super fans. they aren't making it onto the jury. you don't have any concerns about that. you have more of a concern, the people who know her to some degree, have family members who know her. like her, et cetera. but i think it's actually sometimes easier than we make it out to be. meaning, yes, there are a lot of taylor swift fans out there but there are a lot of people out there who don't know that much about her. you see that. you are able to find people who don't know that much about her and about the case. >> what are the other challenges here. >> i think the most important issue and that was the other question that was mentioned is, have you or someone you care about or love ever been the victim of a sexual assault? remember, this is a celebrity case, yes, but in reality this is a sexual assault case. i mean taylor swift is saying she was sexually assaulted. let's not forget that in the context of taylor swift and big-time celebrity, et cetera. this is about credibility. it's about a guy who got fired from his job saying it was based on a lie and about taylor swift saying i was sexually assaulted and decided to stand up for myself. those are more important than figuring out who you want on the jury than taylor swift fan, not taylor swift fan, et cetera, because the creditable, not just of taylor swift the celebrity but of taylor swift the person and if this deejay, the person, based on what they're sayinghaed becomes critical in the case. >> that's going to be the thing that everybody has to wipe away once they're sitting on the jury pool, the personas around the two people. >> and it comes just -- will come down to their testimony. and that's why i said this yesterday. her testimony becomes critical. the only way i think she really has a danger of losing this case is if she's terrible on the witness stand. if she doesn't come across as credible. really tough case for him. and as a result, he's going to have to be terrific and credible so those are the key issues in the case. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. >> all right, george, now to a new twist in that model kidnapping case where a british woman says she was abducted, drugged and threatened with being auctioned online and an arrest has been made but now there are new questions about her story. abc's james longman has those details. >> reporter: this morning, british model chloe ayling with her family after meeting with authorities recounting what she says was her abduction, allegedly drugged, bound and stuffed inside a suitcase to be sold on the internet, the so-called dark web. the 20-year-old recalling her ordeal to reporters after her return home sunday. >> i've been through a terrifying experience. i feared for my life second by second minute by minute hour by hour. >> reporter: now italian media are questioning some aspects claiming ayling burst into tears when police asked her why she was seen shoe shopping with one of her captors during the time when she was allegedly held hostage saying she had previously met her captor in paris in april and during the three interrogations ayling insisting there were five assailants but investigators so far only have two people of interest. polish national lukazz herba and his brother. she did go shopping with her captor but said she feared for her life. >> she was told that people were there watching her and ready to kill her if she tried anything. >> reporter: ayling's lawyer telling abc news his client has been through hell and he's disgusted with the conspiracy theories in the tabloids. >> she was told she was going to be sold to somebody in the middle east for sex. >> that's all i want to say. >> reporter: and new details about her alleged captor who is this morning behind bars. his computer equipment has been seized and police describe the 30-year-old who lives here in the uk as a fantasist. robin. >> a lot there. coming up, are those apps million use to buy and sell secondhand items putting your safety at risk? [ applause ] yeah. yeah. >> i know singing is a theme for your "pop news" cast. ♪ ain't no mountain high enough nobody wants to join me but that's all right ♪ thank you, guys. you see, i told you you were the best audience we had. >> deb roberts was tempted. >> you got to smile. you got to laugh. good medicine, guys in yes, it is. >> we are going to turn to a fascinating story in "the new york times" about nfl wives. hundreds of them are turning to a private facebook page sharing advice on how to deal with their husband's health. fears about concussions and the pressures that come with life in professional football. deborah roberts is here with the story. hey, deborah. >> reporter: good morning, george and all the rest of you. it's a social network group unlike we've ever seen not about sharing photos but a private society of women who can honestly share their joys, pain and worry about a complicated and sometimes painful life that many of us can never truly understand. with the regular season just weeks away, many are thinking about football. but for the wives and families of nfl players every day can feel like game day. so many worried about injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, brain trauma affecting a growing number of players. to cope, a special sisterhood has developed on facebook. the group filled with wives, daughters and widows of current and former nfl players. its founder whose husband played ten nfl seasons telling us, the purpose of the page is meant to be a supportive measure to a silent partner of the nfl family. one of those partners janet dorsett. >> it's a safe place for us to be able to come and basically talk about anything. >> reporter: her husband hall-of-famer tony has been diagnosed with early signs of cte. she says the forum is a place to talk to other women about her issues. >> it's hard to deal with a lot of what we deal with and in particular with a husband who may start to show signs of brain trauma and do it on a public stage. >> reporter: some saying the group of roughly 2,000 has been a life saver offering a private place to put their pain, questions and worries. >> i may not have met any of these women but i've met them through facebook and that's enough for me. >> reporter: janet mccoy saying it was a crucial line of support joining the group after losing her husband mike to dementia last year. the retired packers cornerback diagnosed with the disease in his 50s. >> a lot of it has to do with what we're dealing with as wives, how to best take care of our husbands, the one thing that i felt strongly about is validating a wife's feeling. it doesn't make any difference if they think they're alone, they're not. so many of us have gone through the same thing. >> reporter: for jordan nelson whose husband cory is a fourth year linebacker for the broncos it's a safe place to ask questions about life in the league. >> last year my husband and i went through an agent change and i was able to private message someone in the group who had been through the same thick. things like that that maybe regular friends can't relate to. things like with family issues, you know, like getting cut, traded, those types of things are things that we discuss. >> reporter: so though they don't meet in personal of these nfl family members say they really get to know each other and trust each other. janet dorsett even pointing some of them to programs that the nfl already has in place and as for the nfl, the group telling us overnight that it does provide a number of programs offline designed to serve, educate and assist players and their families during and after their careers offering assistance for their mental, emotional, physical and financial well-being and, guys, they truly do need it. we see the sport and think of it as so glamorous but these family members deal with a lot. >> i think it's glamorous and love to say how brave it is and how much of a warrior these players are but i think it's even more brave to see their wives of retired players who have lost their husbands to some of these issues and current young players who are all coming together to share their stories. that's bravery to me to just let others know we're going through this and we're here to help you. >> banding together. >> banding together creating your own team. really amazing part of the story as well. >> some of them just posting not leslie talking but posting prayer, supporting each other, a sisterhood online. >> thank you, deborah. was your confidence as high in bryan as he had his confidence in himself? >> bryan had has a lot of confidence. i mean i was confident in our relationship but i mean, you know, i went back and forth because i had to make the best decision for me and i wanted to make sure i made the right decision which obviously i did. >> and, rachel, you were in a very precarious situation yesterday with peter. and what if peter had proposed to you as well? were you ready to face two proposals? >> well, no. i mean if you -- you see the emotional breakup that peter and i had and he was ready to propose, but at that point i knew that he wasn't the one for me. and it was really important for me to not have two men standing up there at the end. if i knew what i was going to do then i wanted to send someone home. or send that person home the night before. >> how tough was it to face peter live last night? [ applause ] how are you both doing today? >> very well. i think it's take one day at a time and that's the best that you can do. >> yeah. >> same thing. i believe in happy mornings and he had a great life and we're trying to celebrate his great 61 years. >> yes, he had a great 61 years and you learn so much in reading about his book and the love of his life right here, how he adored his big brother -- his little brother as well and jenna and aaliyah, the light of his life, the two daughters, how are they doing. >> they're doing well. everybody is working and we're just pushing along, you know. >> what you have to do because i know in a couple of days it will be one year since we lost him. >> yes, it will. >> i read it from cover to cover and i've known -- i knew john for a long time and did not realize the challenges that he was facing and we had talked about the book before he passed. he told me about it. was it a relief to him that he was going to get this side about this very deep, dark depression or was he anxious about it? was he nervous about people knowing his story. >> i think he was really excited about it. people like you, you say make your mess your message, basically he was trying to do that. he basically went to a program at the white house and it was basically on depression and mental health and he came back and said he felt like a phony because he had dealt with in for so long and he wanted to come out and help other people. >> what was his hope in helping other people and with the book, wanda. >> helping to let you know that you can get past this and that there is a silver lining and that you can get help. and it's possible to move forward and he was. >> yes, he was and people need to realize that. >> yes. >> that's why when the untimely death of natural causes just stunned us all, opening the book and reading the book and he talks about tappan zee bridge and how he thought about taking his own life and he didn't. so, bernie, i ask you, if somebody is feeling that way at this moment watching us what would john say to that person, what do you say to that person? >> the message is very clear, john was best friends with jimmy valvano. part of the v foundation and jimmy's message don't ever give up so with depression, one step at a time, one day at a time. you know, one step forward and then keep hanging in there and that's what john did. he fought every day, the title is playing hurt and that's what he did, he fought every day but he felt hurt every day. >> he talks glowingly throughout the book about both of you and that your good intentions in saying -- >> yes, cheerleader. >> cheerleader and a lot of people going through depression and they say you think you're doing as a family member you think you're doing the right thing so -- >> wake up in the morning and be happy. you know, and that we learned as we went through this with him that that doesn't always work for everybody. you have to let the person figure it out and you also along with having a good doctor and having medication, then you figure out how you do this but it's natural for your family member to want to, you know, like he would call it be a cheerleader. >> he said you were the most beautiful woman he ever met. so very true. wan wanda, bernie, thank you. my love to you and he lives on with so many young people. he was a great mentor. >> yes. >> to me, as well and a friend. >> thank you. >> thank you so much.
