Day 140 of the trump presidency, the biggest one yet, a once in a generation moment on capitol hill. The world will be watching when james comey tells his story. Lets take a live look at the room where comey will testify just three hours from now. And right outside of that room people are already lining up, waiting to get into the hearing. Look at that long line right there. All around the d. C. Area, watch parties are popping up, even at the d. C. Area bars. It will be a day filled with drama, high stakes for the white house and the country. Weve never seen this kind of public showdown between a president and the fbi director he fired. Comeys prepared testimony released last night is packed with vivid details about his meetings with trump, based on notes he took in real time. Flatly contradicts trumps claim that he ever tried to influence the Michael Flynn investigation. Trump says he feels totally vindicated. Many more questions unanswered. In fact, here are some of the Big Questions comey will face today. Does he think President Trump was trying to obstruct justice. Does he think he was fired for not shutting down the Michael Flynn probe. And why didnt he publicly reveal his concerns that trump was trying to influence the investigation. Lets go straight to our senior justice correspondent, Pierre Thomas, in washington for the very latest. Good morning, pierre. Reporter amy, good morning. The day is here. The fired fbi director breaks his silence, appearing in one of the most anticipated hearings in recent memory. He will make the case that he was under constant pressure from the president frustrated by the russia investigation who then fired him without notice. From the first time fbi director james comey met then president elect donald trump, he was clearly leery. After a january intelligence briefing with trump, comey decided to type his thoughts on a laptop in an fbi vehicle outside trump tower the moment he walked out of the meeting. Comeys dramatic testimony today is based on notes he took about encounters with trump that made him increasingly uneasy. Hes become more famous than me. Reporter january 27th, five days after that now famous handshake, trump summons comey to a private dinner at the white house. Comey says trump asked him if he wants to stay on the job. Comey was suspicious, calling it strange, insisting it was an effort to create some sort of patronage relationship. He claims the president was blunt. I need loyalty. I expect loyalty. The exchange was awkward, according to comey. We simply looked at each other in silence. The white house denies it was a loyalty pledge. Did the president implore him to pledge his loyalty to the president , is that true . No. That did not happen . No. Reporter february 14th, after a briefing with senior National Security officials in the oval office, trump wants to speak to comey alone. Comey says trump wants to talk about Michael Flynn who was forced to resign the previous day for lying about his contacts with russia. According to comey trump said, i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go. He is a good guy. A hope you can let this go. Comey was concerned, believing that this request was to drop the case. Trump says it never happened. Did you at any time urge former fbi director james comey in any way, shape or form to close or back down the investigation into Michael Flynn, and also, as you look back no. No. Next question . Reporter comey says the pressure continued, that trump asked him in a phone call to publicly say that the president was not under investigation, to lift the cloud of the probe. Trump specifically mentioning he had nothing to do with russia, had not been involved with hookers in russia, as alleged in unverified dossier. Comey will acknowledge that on three different occasions that he did tell the president that he was not personally under investigation, but thats about the only thing the two men agree on. Comeys associates tell us hes been stung by the abrupt firing, angered by the barrage of attacks coming from the white house. The rank and file of the fbi had lost confidence in their director. Hes a show boat. Hes a grandstander. Reporter comey is not the type of man who shrinks in the spotlight. Hell be determined, disciplined, but he can be emotional if provoked. Thanks very much. The president can be emotional if hes provoked. Lets get more from our chief White House Correspondent jon karl. As weve seen, the white house seizing on that confirmation from comey that he did tell the president three times that he was not personally under investigation. Reporter and one extraordinary fact about this is the president had been asking comey for months to come out publicly and to say that he was not a subject of the investigation. Comey had refused to do that, and then after hes fired, today in this hearing, he will say just that. We have a reaction from the president s personal attorney, mark kass awits. He says the president feels completely and totally vindicated. He is eager to continue and move forward with his agenda. Of course, george, what comey says is not that he is not under investigation now. Comey might not even know that, frankly. The investigation is now being run, of course, by Robert Mueller. Right, but how is the white house going to handle the other contradictio contradictions. The president has said he did not ask for a pledge of loyalty. The president flatly denied those conversations about Michael Flynn. Reporter theres much else in this testimony that is both directly contradictory, you pointed out two big ones, and also embarrassing to the president. Unclear how theyll respond. So far it seems that the white house is simply going to defer to the president s personal attorney. But george, if i were advising the white house reaction, i would look at the president s twitter feed. So far no tweets from the president. Yesterday on capitol hill dan coats and admiral rogers stone walled the Senate Intelligence committee on what they told the president and what he told them. Reporter really an extraordinarily tense hearing, refusing to answer really basic questions, did the president ask either of those two top intelligence officials to interfere with the russia investigation. If the answer was no, it seemed that would be an easy answer to give. They refused to answer, upsetting democrats and republicans on that committee. Not the end of the story there. Jon karl, thanks very much. Amy . George, james comey is not the only one the world will be watching closely this morning. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle reacting to comeys testimony and preparing to ask those high stakes questions. Lets go straight to our Congressional Correspondent mary bruce in the Committee Hearing room on capitol hill for more on that. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, amy. Comey has yet to even be sworn in here but already his testimony has rocked capitol hill and sparked some key new questions. Democrats are describing comeys account as devastating and shocking. Even some Republican Leaders agree that it is inappropriate for the president to try and demand loyalty of his fbi director, but now they want to know more about these interactions. Thats exactly what this hearing here today is all about. Lawmakers here are going to be trying to drill into these interactions to try and glean the president s tone and intent as they try to get to the bottom of those big key questions. Why was comey fired . Was it because he didnt meet the president s demands, were other intelligence officials pressured to intervene, and was the president trying to obstruct the fbis investigation. Amy, just take a listen to how the top democrat over in the house investigation explained the stakes here today. Obstruction of justice is certainly one possibility. This would be shocking and scandalous under the best of circumstances and we cant allow ourselves to become inured to, well, this is just how this president does business. Thats not okay. Mary, speaking to that, comey is not going to be the only one under the microscope today. A lot of eyes will be on lawmakers who will be grilling him. Who are the ones to watch . Reporter mark warner, the top democrat on the committee is likely to try and drill into especially why comey was fired, whether these conversations he had with the president led to that abrupt exit. Also come a la maris, the freshman democrat from california, a former prosecutor. Hes been making her mark as one of the touchest questi etoughes. John brennan, roy blunt, they are likely to poke holes into comeys testimony and theyll give you a good look at the capitol. Finally, john mccain will be here asking questions. He has not shied away from being tough on mr. Comey and tough on the president. Thanks very much. More from our chief legal analyst dan abrams and our chief political analyst michael dowd. Do the facts laid out by comey along with Everything Else we know, lay it out for obstruction of justice in the investigation . First of all, anyone in federal Law Enforcement would tell you that if what james comey is saying is true, its inappropriate. The question of obstruction of justice is a separate one. I dont think theres any individual piece here that anyone would say that in and of itself is going to lead to obstruction of justice. The question is, does the total picture here lead to a pattern which is from the moment that donald trump is meeting with james comey, the reason hes meeting with him, asking other people to leave the room when he does meet with him, and then from there ending up firing him and then pronouncing that the reason was, at least in part, because of russia. The question there is, when you look at all of that together, does that reach the level of obstruction. Combined with what the president may have said to the director of National Intelligence and his staff. We dont know whether Robert Mueller is actually investigating the president for obstruction of justice. Thats right. Some people are saying its clear that comey is saying that he wasnt investigating trump so what are we talking about. Were now talking about what has happened since then. The fact that hes been fired since then. The president has talked about russia being on his mind since then. And the question then becomes how does that fit into the totality of the investigation. Matt dowd, the president faces this hearing coming into a very tough political position. His approval numbers continue to fall. He is not trusted on this issue. Well, the difference between donald trump today and where Richard Nixon was when the start of watergate and where Ronald Reagan was in the start of iran contra, both those president s were 60 plus approval ratings. Donald trump is in 30 . The only thing donald trump has going for him today is the fact that theres a wall of republicans that still havent broken. Now since they have the house and they have the senate, thats a big deal. Until that starts to falter, then i think hes protected a bit in washington d. C. , but out in the country theres serious questions. Well get a clue from the republican questioning today. Yeah, i think were about to see. I mean, as dan said, there may not be a smoking gun in this but theres fingerprints, shell casings and powder burns, and sergeant friday is about to testify today and present just the facts. The man at the middle of this investigation, former National Security adviser Michael Flynn appears to be nowhere near washington, but the probe is still in full swing and our chief investigative correspondent brian ross is here with those details. Certainly at ground zero of the fbi investigation, the current most prominent target, the focus on the meddling with russia has extended to include his finances and work as a Foreign Agent for another country. When the going gets tough, general flynn goes surfing. This was the general on the beach with his sister in a photo posted this week by his son on twitter, seemingly free of any care about his role as a central figure in the drama playing out back in washington. Well, hes a central figure because it now appears that he has taken money both from the russians and from the turkish government. Reporter flynn first came under investigation for his ties to russia during the campaign when he was Donald Trumps senior Foreign Policy adviser and a strident supporter. Lock her up, thats right. Thats right, lock her up. Reporter then after the election, during the transition, flynn failed to report that he had secretly met with the Russian Ambassador about sanctions, even lying about it to vicepresident elect michael pence who unknowingly repeated the lie. They did not have a discussion contemporaneous with u. S. Action. Reporter that discussion was at the heart of the investigation that President Trump wanted then fbi director james comey to drop, according to the advanced copy of comeys testimony. Quote, i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go. It appears that the president is really trying to isolate the investigation, really establish a fire wall around the white house by asking comey to drop the investigation. Reporter but the investigation of flynn now goes beyond just that meeting with the Russian Ambassador. Theres also the 45,000 flynn famed to report for attending this dinner in moscow with russian president putin and 500,000 his Consulting Firm was paid for work benefitting the government of turkey which he only belatedly disclosed. If youre not honest about it, it can be a crime. And if youre not honest about it, it can lead to disclosures of the most sensitive information. Reporter flynn says he has devoted most of his life to this country and has done nothing wrong despite what the lawyer calls outrageous claims of free treason. Turning now to michael, its a different kind of a showdown, a big night in cleveland, the nba finals. Youre looking live at the white house this morning, bracing for that bombshell testimony from fired fbi director james comey. Its just hours away on capitol hill, and people have been lining up outside all morning waiting to get in, and those doors are just opening now. Standing room only this morning in washington. Thats right. And as comey prepares to testimony, President Trump is giving remarks to the faith and Freedom Coalition today, and then hell be hosting an infrastructure summit at the white house with governors and mayors. So far unusually this morning he has stayed off twitter. Lots more to talk about now with our Congressional Correspondent mary bruce in the Committee Hearing room on capitol hill, the Hart Senate Office building. Mary, a lot of questions yet to be answered by james comey in his first public testimony. Reporter george, in just a few hours james comey will be sitting behind me telling the American People his side of the story. We know that his opening testimony is going to be explosive, but just wait for the questions. That is where were going to learn real insights into the president s actions. To start, comey says he had nine oneonone conversations with the president , but in his testimony he only details five of them. Lawmakers here are going to want to know what happened in those other conversations. There are also several key questions that comey has yet to address, including does he believe these conversations were recorded, as the president has suggested. Why didnt he speak up more forcefully sooner. And the big one of course, why does comey himself believe he was fired. Now, weve just learned that the top democrat here on the committee, mark warner, is going to praise comey as a straight shooter in his testimony but hes also likely to press comey on all of these issues, and so will the other lawmakers. Mary bruce, thanks very much. Turning now to that dramatic testimony in bill cosbys Sexual Assault trial. His accuser is back on the stand, grilled for hours. And abcs linsey davis is outside that courthouse with all the details. Good morning, linsey. Reporter good morning, amy. Sitting in court yesterday i couldnt help but think about the words of the former da who refused to prosecute this case in part because he said that Andrea Constand had ruined her own credibility and would not be believed by a jury. Of course its way too early to determine the impressions of the jury but Andrea Constand certainly held her own, and her mother who was a fiery pistol on the witness stand bolstered her account. Andrea constand appeared composed and confident despite the defenses attempts to harp on her prior inconsistencies in her statements to police. I thought she was wonderful. Shes maintaining her cool. Reporter in 2005, the then d. A. Then refused to prosecute her case against bill cosby, citing constands credibility as an issue. But during the more than seven hours of testimony spanning two days, the 44yearold appeared unplus tered, recounting what she says happened in 2004 at cosbys pennsylvania home where she says the now 79yearold drugged and sexually assaulted her. Constand denied the defenses attempts to suggest that she and the comedian had a romantic relationship. She also explained the 5 3 calls she made after the alleged assault as simply returning his phone calls. This man is a trustee at temple. She works at temple. Of course shes calling him back. Reporter as for her initial claim that the incident happened in march instead of january, she simply testified, i was mistaken. Constands mother also took the witness stand wednesday. At one point breaking down in tears, testifying that her daughter and cosby were good friends. She viewed him like a father. He is ten years older than even her own father. She went on to recount the first call she made to cosby to confront him about her daughters allegations. During the twohour call, she told the jury that cosby apologized and told her he was a sick man. The prosecution still has several more witnesses to call, including a close friend of andreas, a toxicologist, and an expert on sexual abuse trauma. Of course, they still plan to introduce that now infamous deposition that bill cosby gave more than a decade ago about giving quaaludes to women. Amy. A lot more to come on that. Thank you. Lets bring in legal analysts nancy grace and dan abrams to talk more about this. We know constand completed her testimony. How do you think she held up during crossexamination . Look, it appears she held up very well. If she hadnt, this case would be over. If she hadnt been able to withstand tough questions, there would be no chance of a conviction in this case. Look, there are inconsistencies in her story. There are problems, and this was the time when she was going to be able to answer them. And as a result, i think that the prosecution still has a real shot here. Nancy, overall, how do you think she did in terms of her testimony . At first i was very concerned about the crossexamination regarding the dates. She had her dates mixed up. But when i look back at her testimony, she did incredibly. And the more i listened to the testimony and the more i read about this case, i think its going to strike the jury the same way. It brings back all the rape and sexual molestation cases i tried where the victim has such a feeling of helplessness and powerlessness. Its overwhelming, and i think these experts theyre using to close their case are going to drive it all home. Reporting. Lt expert to people they dont want to accept what happed them. And a rig, to explain the effec benad consistent with to her. In the end though, i dont even know tha that much. It definitely shows a level of because the bottom line , he agrees something happened ag happened. That that an incident occurred at a particular place. Appen in january or n becomes less significant when everyone agreesnancy, do you th theyre saving that deposition for last as a strategy, the prosecution . Oh, yes, and that deposition, im telling you, it actually made me physically turn away from the page when i was reading it. The way he was so cavalier, so arrogant about using power, money, drugs to lure women. It was almost as if he were boasting about it. I imagine some members of the jury are going to have the same reaction that i had. Dan, what does the defense need to do . The problem is hes not going to testify, right . So hes not going to be able to get up there and say in this case it wasnt quaaludes, in this case it was benadryl, and thats a problem. Oh, like it matters. Well, it does. Look, nancy, this is not an easy case for prosecutors. You would agree with that, right . Hmm. Well, the first i was concerned, but after her testimony, im not as concerned now. What a jury is going to do with it, i dont know because its bill cosby for petes sake. Everybodys dad, the good guy, its hard to believe. Yeah, i think this is still a tough case for prosecutors. I think Andrea Constand helped the prosecutions case a lot. But there was a reason that this case wasnt prosecuted and the mother, the mother, dan, what about the mother gianna. She got up there and let it rip. And she described that phone call, and youve got cosby offering to pay for the girls education, to fly the mom and the daughter down to florida to discuss the incident. I mean, why would he do that . All right, well the trial is expected to continue. Theres a lot more to talk about. Nancy grace, thank you, we appreciate it. Same to you, dan, as always. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo is outside the courthouse in massachusetts with the latest. Good morning, mara. Reporter michael, good morning. Prosecutors are saying she did it all to get attention from those classmates because she was lonely, sending her friend some 40 Text Messages encouraging suicide. Well now, shes facing up to 20 years in prison. This morning, new testimony supporting massachusetts prosecuto prosecutors claims 21yearold Michelle Carter pushed 18yearold conrad roy to commit suicide just so she could get attention. I was talking to him on the phone when he killed himself. I heard him die. I just wish i got him more help. Reporter four classmates taking the stand, showing carter used her boyfriends death to generate sympathy as the grieving girlfriend. A friend testifying carter texted her, his death is my fault, like honestly, i could have stopped him. She begins to get the attention that shes been craving for. She has to make him kill himself so that she continues to get that attention and not be known as a liar. Reporter carter is facing Involuntary Manslaughter charges after roy died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, locking himself inside his pickup truck. In 2014, carter then 17, sending dozens of texts, encouraging roy to kill himself. If you want to do it as bad as you say you do, its time to do it today. Even telling him to get back in the truck when he gets nervous. And when he worries about his family suffering, carter reassuring him theyll get over it. But the defense says this is a case of suicide, not homicide, arguing roy was depressed, had tried to kill himself before, and researched ways to commit suicide online. The defense position is that her Text Messages are protected by the first amendment. Their argument is that this is a suicide, not a murder, and that there should not have been criminal charges filed against their client. Reporter now, theres no word yet on whether or not carter will take the stand in her own defense. She did wave her right to a jury trial so the judge alone will decide her fate. But look, comey did something very clever yesterday which was to release his testimony so that hes giving the senators time to prepare their questions, and questions are of course what well be looking for today. Thats where the watergate hearings made such an incredible difference. Something like 85 of the American People saw those hearings, george. You make me think as you talk about the questions, about the possibility of orchestrated exchange coming up. Remember in the watergate hearings of course they had that exchange with the president s adviser, herb butterfield, who revealed the existence of the tapes. Thats one of the questions out there today. Is comey holding back one big surprise. Thats a huge question. Now, the republicans have to be careful because you also saw that example of oliver north. Democrats beating up on oliver north during the iran contra hearings made him a subject of tremendous sympathy to the American People. So both sides have to be careful here, but they also really want to get information out, and they also want to star a little bit in these hearings. One big difference here, this is a hearing, a high profile hearing at the very beginning of the process when the special prosecutors counsel has just been appointed. Right. And so its very important not to give any witnesses in these hearings immunity because i think that that is something that really did taint the entire iran contra process. But you know, senator mccain has said that the fact that comey is testifying, he thinks, means that mueller has said go ahead and testify and everything will be okay. But hearings have a way of developing in very surprising fashion, and so, you know, im going to be watching. I suspect youll be telling us whats going on. Along with everybody else in the country. Those who know him say hell be disciplin disciplined, determined but emotional if provoked, but he will face questions about why he dependent didnt go public with his lawyers. D mornin what a tragic story, you lose your child to a tick bite. Whats important here . This is a sad story but a lot of people havent heard about Rocky Mountain spotted fever but this is a bacterial infection carried by certain ticks, not the same ones that carry lyme disease, generally gives symptoms of a rash, headache, high fever, abdominal pain. It can be treated with antibiotic if caught early. But the important thing when you talk about tickbourn illness, its really based on the geography. If you look at these maps, for example, Rocky Mountain spotted fever tends to be concentrated in these areas, lyme disease new england and the northern part of the country, powassan in these areas, highlighted in blue. So where you are in important, and not every tick is the same. I know Everyone Wants to know what do you recommend to prevent it . So i asked, what songs are you guys listening to this summer. Anyone have any favorites . The one you were playing i like, train. Play that song. None of the people in the room knew this song. Drake is my fellow canadian so ill vote for that. Thank you. Lets talk about the gong show. I loved this show back in the 70s and before you were born. Thank you. What drew you to this revival . What was it . We were talking about shows that we wanted to do and kind of what would be a fun show to make and the gong show came up. Its one of those things, every time you say the title it makes you fismile. And i thought thats something. We got to do something with that. Everybody has such fond memories of the crazy acts and you see the fantastic judges. Back in the day you had everybody. You had steve martin and david letterman, incredible people on the panel. We tried to recreate that this time around. We have amazing judges. I called a lot of favors in with a lot of friends to come and be judges on the show. Its really fun. The host on the show is tommy mateland who looks a lot like mike myers. It has a lot of interesting acts by the way, including one called married with bananas. Yeah. Its a couple. They have a very interesting talent and we want to show everybody what that talent is. Take a look. Oh oh man. Now we know your hidden talent. Yeah. No, you do have hidden talent. Well, my talent is definitely hidden. I but i you know, galifianakis is better because the girl spat into his mouth and then he at least all i had to do was take a bite and e yeah, you werent the receiver. That pretty much means youre going out in 8th grade. Not that i ever did that. You have a lot going on. You have on netflix flaked. You write, star, direct, produce. How do you direct yourself . With great difficulty. Im not a huge fan of watching stuff that i do. Not that i i just find it tough to be objective. So when im directing, i did have to watch playback a lot just to make sure that we get the scene. Do you think youre better than other people think you are or worse . I think im worse. I watch and i go, like, is everybody else not seeing that . Okay, fine. Are you harder on yourself . I imagine that would be a tricky game. Probably so. I think we all are. Its tough for us to one of the first things i remember somebody taught me a long time ago when i was a younger actor in the 90s. I was probably six or seven years you. Right. You know. They said what you can not do when you watch yourself is dont judge how you look because theres nothing you can do about that. About that. But i tried to i tried to get over that part of it but im still, i think, tough on myself. I thought legoman was a voice but its just your voice. Its a little different. Slightly. Yes, i have to go down to here. Okay. But youe so busy with the gong show and flaked and lego batman. Everything but you have time to be your kids Little League coach. How is that going . Its going great. We had a game on the weekend there we are. We won our Rookie League championship on sunday. That was awesome. That was more exciting to me than anything else put together. That was crazy. I jumped about ten feet in the air. Are you an slethlete yoursel . I heard youre really good. Im okay. Im fair. For a guy my age, im okay. For 18 youre pretty good. Thank you. Why do you have such affection which you see each other after all this time . There was a time in all of our lives when something just clicked. Theres a lot of love between us. When i see them i just kind of get the same feeling. Its kind of like seeing a teenage sweetheart or something, that kind of thing. I think you can say whatever you want about the films, but i think the relationship got better and better over the period of time. Do you really want to jump . I think were all a little crazy and i may be crazier than most people so it was easy for me to access. We have our mahi mahi, barbecues, pork, all the great stuff hawaiians offer. Lets start drinking first. We start with the mock tail. I love this idea. Youve cut off the top of a pineapple and hollow it out and this becomes your actual glass. Yes. We have child pineapple juice. Yes. Did you add anything in there . No. Its already mixed. We have sugar, surprises, chilies in there. You can add other things too. Pretty good . That is so fun. That is delicious. So this is mahi mahi. And were celebrating the macadamia. Its very big in hawaii. You get some butter, bread crumbs and macadamia nuts. Put it in the blender, mix it up. That alone looks so good. What you can do with the crust is put it on like this. Butter, bread crumbs and macadamia nuts. Yes. Once that done you can do it with chicken too. You get a nonstick pan. What you want to do is kind of brown it . Brown the crust itself and again, if you dont like mahi, you can do it with halibut or chicken. I would go with the chicken. But i think what a fun rich topping. For the adults, this looks phenomenal. So again, you can either sear it all the way through like this or you can actually pop it in the oven and bake it in the oven. How long would you bake it in the oven . Maybe 350 for about ten minutes. Thats it . Yes. Of course you can take the skin off or leave it on, its up to you. If you have the skin on, it will hold it as youre cooking it. You can actually take it off after youre done cooking it. This looks fantastic. Id love to try it. Youve got a sauce that sounds absolutely decadent, lobster sauce . Lobster sauce. Again, lobster becomes very expensive so you can do it with shrim shrimp, do a shrimp reduction. You want more . More, yes. We have a lot of great products. We like to celebrate our fishermen, farmers, ranchers. We have fish, crops, like macadamia nuts. Chef, that is outrageous. Were also going to have a wonderful dessert. To finish it off you can have some mango bread putting. We use fresh mangos from hawaii, chantilly cream on top and garnish it with fruit, raspberries, mangos, papayas, strawberries. Were going to have this recipe on our website. Yes.
