Tom brady you saw took questions yesterday claimed he couldnt tell the footballs had been deflated and surprising everyone by saying he hadnt yet been questioned by the nfl. Abcs paula faris outside Gillette Stadium in foxborough with the latest. Good morning paula. Reporter good morning, to you, george. Tom brady was peppered with questions for roughly 45 minutes yesterday. Wow, some of those were extremely direct including is he a cheater. Brady repeatedly denied involvement in deflategate but some of his peers are not buying his story. With the eyes of the world on him, tom brady stepped up to the podium denying any knowledge of deflategate. I dont know what happened. I mean i i have no explanation for it. Reporter he admitted to picking out the footballs he wants before the game but says he then leaves it entirely up to the equipment managers to break them in. I dont want anyone touching the balls after that. I dont want anyone rubbing them, you know, putting any air in them taking any air out. Reporter he claims he did notice. I sumed they were exactly the first half second half. Reporter but also expressed a preference for footballs at a very specific air pressure. I like them at the way that i like them which is at 12. 5. I mean to me thats a perfect grip for the football. Reporter former pro bowl quarterback mark brunell is one of many associated with the nfl who are expressing doubt about bradys claims. I dont believe there is an equipment manager in the nfl that would on his own initiative deflate a ball without the starting quarterbacks approval. Reporter also surprising brady revealing League Officials who have been investigating the claim since monday have not even spoken with him yet. But, you know they may. They may. I think thats their i think thats obviously their choice. Reporter why not speak to the man front and center of the controversy right away . The nfl telling abc news they are not commenting. During that 30minute press conference brady fielding some tough questions. Is tom brady a cheater . I dont believe so. I mean i feel like ive always played within the rules. Reporter at times composed. At times doo defensive. This is isnt isis. This isnt no one is dying. But, you know well get through this. What do you say to the fans of the patriot nation. What would you like me to say. Reporter his head coach, Bill Belichick, speaking out hours earlier, also claiming he was unaware of any improprieties. I have never talked to any player staff member about football air pressure. Reporter but telling the assembled media only brady would know how he likes his footballs. So heres what we know. 11 of those 12 footballs were tampered with. We just dont know who did it. Will the league come down hard on the patriots as some are calling for them to do . Well you just heard it. As of yesterday the league hasnt even contacted brady regarding this investigation, george. Yeah that was pretty stunning. Okay paula, lets so much. Lets talk to jesse palmer from espn. You played quarterback. We heard him say he liked 12. 5 but didnt notice it wasnt 2. 5. I wouldnt believe that. Quarterbacks so particular about the footballs they throw in these football games. Its kind of like your starbucks order. Some like brandnew footballs. Some like worn in and some like inflated deflated. I dont know if theres a quarterback that could say, thats about 12. 5 pounds per square inch of air in that football but it is a feel thing and certainly in my opinion tom brady would have known those footballs were deflated. What could have happened to the football before it got to him after he chose the 12 gave them to the equipment manager . You know they get inspected by referees two hours and 15 minutes prior to the game. Even in that window before the game the equipment staff would have had access to the footballs. Tom brady could have had access to them again inside the locker room 0 minutes before the start of the game. He wouldnt be certainly tom brady, absolutely did not put the pin but somebody did because, again, 11 of the 12 being deflated is not just an abnormality. What is going on with the nfl, havent questioned him yet. Why wouldnt you go to the source . Ultimately they know before every single game quarterbacks get to pick the footballs they want to use. Usually it happens the day before the football game. That to me is the most surprising thing that they had not yet questioned him or asked leads a lot to say theyre slowwalking this and want to get through the game and whatever happens after the game happens. It will be a huge distraction for the new England Patriots something they have to deal with with respect to their integrity, with respect to their legacies and Bill Belichick and tom brady, youre right. This is right now normally talking about xs and os on the field whats going to happen. Remarkable to see this blow up. Youve got denials from brady and denials from belichick. Are we ever going to know . Unless you have a picture or Video Evidence with a needle inside the football taking air out i dont think youll ever know fully what happened. Thanks so much. Thank you. Now to the fate of those hostages being held by the terror group isis. The deadline to pay for their release has passed this morning. One of their mothers with a lastminute plea for their release and abcs brian ross is here with the very latest. Good morning, brian. Reporter good morning. Japanese and u. S. Officials are bracing for bad news this morning as the deadline passed in the last few hours. An Intelligence Analyst is searching the internet for what they fear will be another disturbing execution video. The request from isis for 200 million in ransom was a non nonstarter from the beginning as isis must have known. Overnight in tokyo the mother of one of the hostages made a lastminute emotional appeal to isis to spare her son. Her son is a respected Japanese Television correspondent, kenji goto remembered today by colleagues as a careful person. He not a gung ho war journalist. He cares about humanity. Reporter before he went to syria, goto left behind this video. Saying only he was to blame if he was captured by isis. The other hostage is a selfdescribed japanese adventurer who was captured by isis last year and accused then of being an american spy. If isis goes through with its threats today it will bring to seven the number of hostages killed by the purported executioner dubbed jihadi john because of his british accent. You now have 72 hours to pressure your government in making a wise decision. Reporter the same masked man believed to have presided over the murders of james foley, american steve sotloff, britains David Haynes Alan Henning and american peter kassig. They know the identity of the masked man but have not made it public as they seek ways to capture or kill him. And, amy, despite all those air strikes against isis jihad di john and his brutal gang of killers remain very much in business. I know there is other news in the war on terror. A big blow to the United States one of our key allies in the fight against al qaeda in turmoil thats right. In yemen, the president , the Prime Minister and the parliament all forced to resign by a rebel group. That government has been very helpful to the u. S. In fighting al qaeda in yemen. Thats the group that tried to do the underwear bomb against the u. S. And plotted against the u. S. Without the governments help it makes it difficult for the u. S. To counter the al qaeda efforts there. All right, brian ross thank you so much. George. Well turn to politics now, the race for the 2016 republican nomination kicking into gear right now with a major forum in iowa. A friendly summit between jeb bush and mitt romney in utah and another major candidate about to throw his hat into the ring. Jon karl has that exclusive news from washington. Good morning, jon. Reporter good morning, george. Abc news has learned that florida senator marco rubio has started taking concrete steps towards launching a president ial campaign. As one of rubios top advisers tells me quote, he told us to proceed as if he is running for president. I am told rubio has hired a Top Republican fundraiser to serve as the finance director of a president ial campaign. He plans a big fundraising swing through california. Will miss votes in the Senate Next Week followed by atrip to all the early primary state, florida, iowa new hampshire, South Carolina and, of course iowa. So george there had been a lot of speculation that rubio would not run because of jeb bush taking steps towards his own campaign but it sure looks like rubio is going no matter what jeb bush does. At least not yet. Not dropping out yet. About jeb bush we saw that remarkable meeting yesterday between jeb bush and mitt romney out in utah but it doesnt appear they reached any kind of accommodation or deal or anything like that. Reporter not at all. This he had a meeting in utah but coming out of that meeting, no move away from what mitt romney had been telling people before the meeting which is his decision on running for president will have nothing to do with what jeb does. And a lot of the candidates are going to be out there in iowa this weekend for the first big forum. I know youll be going out, as well. A lot more with you sunday on this week. Now to ryan smith with todays other top stories. Good morning. We begin with growing security at the airport. The fishermendes separately trying to hold on stay above water pushed right off that boat happening near scotland. The coast guard eventually plucked all five men from the water and a few had to be treated for hypothermia but they are okay. And finally, this stunner from the Miss Universe competition. Take a look at what miss canada was wearing. As you know canadians love their hockey maybe she loves it a little too much miss canada you see her wearing hockey sticks for wings. Of course the stanley cup is a crown because that would be the natural crown much maple leaf corset her boots tied up with hockey laces and get this a working scoreboard was attached to her back. Of course it was. I dont think she scored highly, amy. Ooh. Oh. At least she wasnt wearing the goalie mask. I thought she looked lovely. Good job. I dont think so. Maybe too much. Nicely dong. Thats too much . Nah. Thank you for the segue, though because we are going to continue with sports and good morning to everybody. The controversy in the world of tennis is what were talking about. Questions about sexism. Some of the biggest stars including Serena Williams and rising star Eugenie Bouchard asked to spin around on the court and show off their outfits during the Australian Open. It is the twirl that has heads spinning this morning. Can you give us a twirl and tell us about your outfit. Reporter just moments after seventh ranked Eugenie Bouchard crushed her opponent in 54 minutes to advance to the third round at the Australian Open 71yearold Tennis Australia commentator ian cohen asked her to twirl on the court. This just days after he asked superstar Serena Williams to do the same thing. I didnt really want to twirl because i just was like you know i dont need all the extra attention. You know im fine with being asked to twirl if they ask the guys to flex their muscles and stuff. Reporter soon twirlgate erupting on twitter with outraged viewers calling it sexist and disgusting and williams saying male tennis stars would never be asked to twirl. I necessarily wouldnt ask rafa to twirl or roger to twirl. This is a reality. Some might think its harmless but it has an impact of minimizing the performance on the field of play. Reporter tennis legend Billie Jean King speaking for many when she wrote the Australian Open interviewer asking the women to twirl on court is out of line. But bouchard is determined not to let cohens request impact the rest of her tournament. I dont know just some old guy asking you to twirl is funny. Not worried about her. Things working out just fine for bouchard. Just hours ago she won her third round match against Caroline Garcia to advance to the round of 16 and i dont know amy, is there something to it if the girls will be asked to twirl, he should ask the guys to flex. How about focus on the game own not about what were wearing. She played like a rock star and that is what we should be talking about. Thats what i want to remember. Hear, hear. Lets go to ginger.
