i mean, do you think they would accept me? do you think it would be safe for me? >> reporter: the mayor of ferguson says wilson will not get severance pay. >> we have now severed ties with officer darren wilson. moving forward to bring our community together. >> reporter: wilson writing it is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. >> what jour biggest worry? >> someone hurting my family. or another officer getting hurt. >> reporter: this may not be the end. a justice department investigation is still looming over wilson and the ferguson pd. michael brown's faply spent the weekend at a church service and say wilson's resignation does not come as a surprise. over the weekend, mostly peaceful. a trend everyone here is hoping will continue. george? >> oh. >> ooh. >> some saying he'll be the breakout star of the new franchise. >> wow. >> we got a lot of answers copping up. >> people were poring over the trailer looking for clues. i mean, they were watching it over and over again. we'll share some. a few. also ahead, the trial getting under way for a montana home owner who killed a german exchange student in his garage. he says it was self-defense. prosecutors say it was a trap. and coming up, a warning about shoplifting. a crime that costs us millions ef year. why teddy bears and bottles of water could be clues that help you stop a crime. >> mm. >> tune in for this wun. we begin with the dramatic rescue of a georgia boy missing for four years. found behind a false wall in his father's home. the boy somehow managing to contact his mother for help. his father and stepmother behind bars this morning. steve osunsami has the latest. joins us from jonesboro, georgia. good morning, stooe. >> reporter: good morning, robin. families say they once saw the 13-year-old on top of the roof sweeping it. they thought it was dangerous. but no one suspected he was being held captive. this morning, a mother's prayers were answered the. four yours after she thought she would never see her son again, she put her arms around her on saturday. he went missing after visiting with his father, gregory jean, when he was 9. the 13-year-old managed to get his hands on a cell phone, download an app, and text his mother. telling her he was south of atlanta, hidden in his father's home. >> we came to the home and were able to get inside. >> reporter: they visited the home twice. the first time, they couldn't find him. the people home denied he was there. the teenager sent a second text saying he was there all along, hid. in a secret come part in the walls of the home. >> we opened the come papartmen where he was. i saw him, asked him to come forward. he was horrified. he was frozen with fear. >> reporter: they found him in a small attic above the garage. the only way to it was the back of a closet covered with towels and a piece of plywood. >> i couldn't believe it. we found him. he just kept saying thank you, thank you, thank you. >> surprised neighbors say they've seen him in the yard. >> reporter: it appears he was held against his will. this morning, his father and stepmother, samantha davis, are charged with false impressenment and cruelty to children. the boy's parents are haitian immigrants. his father and stepmother appear in court again on december 9th. now to the trial of a montana home owner accuse of killing a german exchange student in his garage. tom llamas is tracking the case. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, george. a jury will decide if a montana man really thought his home and life were in danger or if he was just trigger happy. this morning, jury selection under way in the trial of montana marcus karma, accused of killing a german exchange student. the jury will decide if karma, a u.s. forest service firefighter really thought his home and life were in danger. >> my client didn't want to kill some kid like that. he feels terrible about this. >> reporter: this surveillance camera image captures didi. karma's girlfriend, janelle flagger, told police they mad been burglarized two times in three weeks. they set up a baby monitor in the garage and installed motion sensors and left the graunl door open with a purse inside as bait for the thieves. one sunday this past april, the sensors would go off. alerting karma, who told police he grabbed his shotgun and ran outside. he thought the intruder would come out and harm him so he fired four shots, striking didi in the head and the arm. he died. >> we're outrajd it happened. especially to someone who loved so dearly. >> reporter: police say two other teens admitted to the previous robberies. karma was overheard just days before in a profanity-laced tirade against the unknown burglars saying, i'm not kidding. you'll see them on the news. i'm going to kill them. karma's lawyer claims his client had a right to defend himself under montana's castle doctrine. >> it says man's home is his castle. he can use lethal or deadly force the protect that home. >> reporter: and karma and his family say there was no baiting here. they were on high alert. the parents of that foreign exchange student are flying in from germany for the trial. robin and george?
