A brawl at a house party. It was like an episode of Jerry Springer. Her kids throwing punches. What sparked this rumble in the tundra. And good morning, america. Happy friday, robin on assignment this morning. So nice to have this guy, rob march see ya know is with us. The new guy. Great to be here. Our chief meteorologist, ginger, taking a long weekend. Whats your title . Senor. A welldeserved time off for her. Welcome. Nice to be here. Lots of weather to talk about, and fun stuff too. Welcome aboard, rob. And Oscar Pistorius, the former olympian convicted of culpable homicide. And we are in the courtroom, matt, this verdict has shocked so many. Reporter absolutely, george. When Oscar Pistorius walked into the courtroom yesterday, he faced life in prison. If the conviction for manslaughter, its possible he may never have to spend a single night in prison for killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, and this headline may say all. Oscars great escape. Mr. Pistorius, please stand up. Reporter judgment day for Oscar Pistorius, on the count of murder not guilty and is discharged. Instead he is found guilty of culpable homicide. Reporter after a contentious trial punctuated by recriminations. You killed reeva. Say yes, i shot and killed reeva steenkamp. Reporter Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of manslaughter for firing into the bathroom knowing someone was inside. But the judge threw out other gunrelated charges. The accused is found not guilty. Reporter and convicted him of one gunrelated charge. Found guilty. Reporter the prosecution might appeal. The olympian breaking down in court on thursday, but this morning, showing little emotion, only staring stonefaced in his seat. Today, it was the family of the woman he killed shaking their heads. And the criticism came from many, including the woman he dated before her. Sam taylor, his girlfriend of two years. When you first heard she was killed, what went through your mind . I definitely thought it could have been me. Reporter now sentencing could be weeks away, and the judge has enormous discretion. But during the lunch break, Oscar Pistorius was led down into a holding cell, kept there for an hour. That may be the most time he spends behind bars after the conviction. We want to ask dan abrams about that. We watched the evidence, watched the trial. Im one of those people, like you, who is shocked by this. Its not just that the verdict itself is stunning. The not guilty on the murder charge, its the reasoning that the judge used. It appears that this judge believes it was all a mistake. Believes that Oscar Pistorius thought that reeva was still in bed. Thats right. And as a result, that this all was a horrible, horrible mistake. That, to me, when you look at the facts of this case, is the most significant thing that this judge found, and that led to the ruling. Basically threw out the testimony from witnesses who heard fights and screaming. Thats right. And says she believes it was Oscar Pistorius who was the one screaming. When we first heard that, it seemed absurd. The notion that witnesses heard a woman screaming and heard two people screaming, some heard a man and a woman, and instead the judge is saying i believe that the defense that Oscar Pistorius may have had a highpitched voice, and it was just him scream. Because remember, if there was a fight, there was no way to avoid a murder charge here. Just learning from the courtroom, bail has been granted. He is free, sentencing in october. Its possible to within the judges direction, no jail time. Before this reasoning, i thought there was no way he would walk. And acquitted on an ammunition charge, it was found in his home and he did not have the license to have it. The court saying there was no intent. It makes me wonder, is it possible . Very unlikely, no jail time. Unlike here, the prosecutors there can appeal. On matters of law. I would not be surprised if these prosecutors appeal on one crucial mistake that many believe the judge made about whether he had to have the intent to kill her behind that door opposed to anyone behind that door. She was hoping to see someone else, and made it clear to the president when he walked in. Take a listen. I really wanted it to be beyonce. I understand. Malia and sasha would feel the same way.
