more than four inches in just two hours. washing out roads, stranding livestock. it's the worst flooding sin city has seen since 1981. >> that's going to be close. don't move that car. >> reporter: that epic rainfall across the southwest. and a mirror image, 2,500 miamis east in virginia. up to ten inches of rain falling in suffolk. dozens of cars swimming up to their windshields. are you ready learning more about the footage showing star running back, ray rice, knocking out his then-girlfriend, now wife, in an elevator earlier this year. the baltimore ravens terminated his contract. and the nfl suspended him indefinitely. ryan smith here with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. less than two years ago, ray rice was a super bowl champion. now, his ravens jersey no longer for sale at the nfl store. he lost an endorsement deal and others are in jeopardy. revealing a video, on his brutal attack on his now-wife in a hotel elevator. this is the shocking video that got star running back ray rice sacked by the baltimore ravens and suspended indefinitely from the nfl. rice, seen entering an atlantic city hotel elevator in february, with his then-fiance, janay. appearing to strike her once. then again. seemingly punching her so hard, she hits a railing, knocking her out. the associated press saw a version of the surveillance tape and reports, the two can be heard yelling obscenities at one another. and janay is seen spitting on rice. the ravens firing rice, after tmz released the video on monday. >> when someone that you care about does wrong, you know, and is faced with the consequences of doing wrong, and rightfully so, it is tough. it is hurtful. >> it was hard for all of us to see. >> as bad as it is, have to stick by him for a person. not by his actions at all. >> reporter: this morning, serious questions from some, about why rice wasn't ousted sooner. the nfl telling abc news monday, that video was not made available to us. and no one in our office has seen it until today. but commissioner goodell did see this video, released by tmz sports in february, showing rice drags the unconscious janay out of the elevator. at the time, suspending him for just two games. >> it's appalling that it took a video to wake the nfl up. >> reporter: off the field, rice was charged with third-degree aggravated assault and apologized publicly to his wife. >> i made the biggest mistake in my life. she's an angel. >> reporter: prosecutors allowing him to enter a pretrial intervention program, with no prison time, if completed successfully. ray rice's camp hasn't responded to our request for comments. as for roger goodell, he admitted he made a mistake suspending him only for two games. now, many wonder if he will face more fallout. dan abrams said. you heard with christine brennan said. it took a video to wake up the nfl? >> and you have to ask yourself, what's really changed? we had seen the previous video, right? of him dragging his wife out of the elevator. knowing that he had hit her. he was charged criminally. that was resolved. and now, today, the nfl is acting as if, oh, my goodness. oh, my goodness. look at what happened. what did they think happened in the elevator? we knew what had happened in the elevator. and i think they're using this to some degree as cover, to take a harsher position and give him a tough eer sentence. >> they say they did not see the video. this is the first time they've been seeing it. >> that's an important question, if he ends up suing the nfl. let's take a step back from it. even if they hadn't seen the video, they had seen the first video of him dragging her out. and he wasn't denying that he had hit her. so, what changed? the bottom line is, yes. we've now seen the video, the emotional impact, et cetera. as a technical legal matter, it could matter, whether the nfl had seen the video previously because he could argue, wait a second. i was punished already. you took action against him. there's a collective bargaining agreement, et cetera, in place. you can't just go ahead and up it at a later time. an interesting question. i'll be interested to see what michael thinks, the union, silent. no statement from the union on this at all. >> i want michael to weigh in. i know you will be talking about this on sunday. what are you hearing from the players? and what about the union? people are thinking they may step up. >> i think anytime anyone sees this video, dan says what's the difference with the video? i caught a fish this big. and you see video of them catching the fish this big. the video was impact. it's not about the nfl. it's about ray rice and his situation with his wife. also, about domestic violence as a whole, outside of the nfl. this is an issue, where you have a guy that made a mistake, that i wouldn't want to be associated with him. no one wants to be associated with him. he wouldn't be on my team. i wouldn't want him around in any capacity. and i think that that is the thing. i don't think -- i think roger goodell made a mistake. and he admitted that two-game suspension. i don't think he saw this video because there's no i.s.i.s. a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows seven out of ten americans favor air strikes against the extremist group in iraq. jon karl is at the white house with more on what to expect from the president tomorrow. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. more significant in that new poll, an equally large number of americans in this poll support expanding those air strikes syria. this is a dramatic change of public opinion. there was a deep reluctance to get involved in the middle east. now, you see wide concern about the threat posed by a group that's been beheading americans, taking over large territory, large amounts of territory in iraq and syria. in this poll, 91%, 91% said that they see i.s.i.s. as posing a vital throeat to u.s. interests. >> but the president is not aprepared to announce he is ready with air strikes. and it comes with a time he is facing popularity problems. 56% of the country disapproving of how the president is handling foreign policy. >> reporter: and the single-biggest factor in that, is a majority say the president has been too cautious in responding to this threat. that's why he's giving the speech. he's not going to order air strikes on syria yet. he is going to make the case that he has a strong approach, a strategy for taking on this group. >> jon karl, thanks very much. now, to a bizarre attack overseas. an undercover air marshal injected with an unknown substance by a man with a syringe, at an airport in nigeria. right now, the marshal is in quarantine. and brian ross has the latest. >> reporter: this unprovoked attack, as the marshal remains under close observation. the attack occurred when a team of air marshals was making its way through the crowded terminal in nigeria. a man with a syringe lunged at one of the air marshals, able to inject an unknown substance in the back of the marshal's arm. the air marshal was rushed through security and boarded the united airlines flight to houston he had been scheduled to work. now, with fears ebola or hiv, the air marshal was given a heavy dose of antiviral medication. and so far, there's no sign of 23 any problems. >> brian, thank you very was swimming alone off the coast of australia, when he was bitten on his upper leg, all while his wife was watching from the beach. a paddleboarder in the water tried to save him. it was too late. and then, a large shark was spotted nearby just moments after the attack. in sports, a late-night thriller on "monday night football." the cardinals trailed big, entering the fourth quarter. but mounted a line at apple stores across the country. >> the next big thing. >> reporter: it's a safe bet that apple will show off its much-anticipated iphone 6. and for the first time ever, a brand-new product. a the phone. leaked photos show what many believe to be a bigger screen and new materials. sapphire glass. a superhard, almost unbreakable screen. it may use that fingerprint sensor, and a chip to turn the phone into a mobile payment device. then, there's the iwatch or whatever it might be called. rumored to include a slew of health tracking sensors and possibly a wireless way to recharge. not all >> but he may have a tan that close to lava like that. >> you had to go there. you were thinking about it. we're going to begin this half hour, with the mysterious murder of a young american woman, apparently beaten to death in her apartment in chile, where she was teaching english. no suspects yet. but there may be an ear witness, who heard the killer's voice. abc's gio benitez here with that story for us. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the state department is following this case. a young woman who adored chile so much, she wanted to work there as soon as she graduated. she loved when people greeted her with a hug and kiss. but now, police say, a killer there ended her life. this morning, an international murder mystery. a beautiful, 22-year-old american, allegedly murdered in chile, where she was teaching kids english. erica hagen's body discovered in the bathroom of her apartment, in the chilean city saturday morning. the prosecutor saying, hagen had at least three injuries on her head, caused by a sharp, blunt object. hagen had been in chile since july, after graduating from georgetown college in kentucky. she was teaching at a private secondary school. local reports say a half-burned blanket was found in her apartment. and that the school watchman saw smoke from the chimney friday night, after he called out asking what happened. a male voice inside reportedly said, calm down. i am with my girlfriend. but i am just leaving. hagen's devastated family, telling "gma," she was following her passion. >> she dedicated herself to helping other people and to her belief in god. >> reporter: hagan had been documenting her time in chile on her blog. posting for the final time friday, just a day before her body was found. writing, every day, i meet more people that invite me to be social with them. and i love it. hagan was scheduled to return home in december. instead, friends and family are now mourning her loss. while authorities try to piece together what happened. >> she made a mark on everybody that she met, positive influence for the world. >> reporter: her alma mater, georgetown college in kentucky, is planning a memorial service. and the state department tells abc news, it will wait for chilean authorities to investigate this. but can't comment any further. george? >> such a sad story. we're going to turn to a murder trial, shaking up a small florida town, where a woman is charged with killing her good friend who stole her husband, a man who once served as mayor. in a surprising twist, the suspect was turned in by her own mom. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this morning, a florida mother of two, is standing trial. charged with first-degree felony murder. accused of killing a friend who was having an affair with her estranged husband. >> i've been spending years to forget it. >> reporter: the man at the center of that love triangle, dan trott, testifying against his ex-wife. he says they were in the midst of a divorce, when he started dating her long-time friend. but in february of 2010, she went missing after failing to meet trott at the gym. then, an unexpected break. >> i think there's been a murder. >> okay. and where is the person at who is the victim? >> i don't know. >> reporter: investigators turning their focus on graham trott, after her own mother called 911 to report her daughter possibly had committed a murder. even naming the victim. >> she didn't tell you who she's saying she killed? >> she's saying -- i don't know. kelly. >> kelly. >> what makes this case so unusual is how the defendant was exa acting immediately after the murder. >> reporter: and prosecutors say graham trott even led her own family to the body. but the defense argues, other people had a motive. people like her own husband, gino. >> you uh loved her even after you found out she was cheating on you? >> yes. >> reporter: rallo testifying monday, he had nothing to do with his wife's murder. and prosecutors say he has an alibi, captured here by a store surveillance camera. gram trott has pleaded not guilty. her attorneys declined to comment to abc news. for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, new york. time, now, for the weather. ginger zee. >> we have wild video. ready for this? i know you have a special suit on. but exactly how did it feel to you with the suit on? >> it's extraordinarily hot. even with the suit on. you can sit there for a max of five seconds or so, before it just is unbearable. and you have to take a breather and step back 20 feet or so. while you're looking into the crater, it's about 2,000 degrees. and there's waves of heat hitting you. and melting camera gear. and melting everything that the heat comes into contact with. it's a very extreme place. >> you have a partner. he got married at the edge of an exploding volcano. i don't know how he talked his wife into that. what are some of the other crazy adventures you've had? >> you know, i've been involved in quite a few, actually. most recently, i was on an expedition tracking sailfish off the coast of mexico for a feeding frenzy. there's a sardine bait ball where the fish are hunting collaboratively. i was working with graham hawks and karen hawks, the ocean explorers, with a two-person submarine to track humpback whales. >> this is george. i want to go back to the volcano. how did you know it wasn't going to erupt? northbound off-ramp to the vine. we can see police and emergency workers on the scene with this. we've got penn do the blocking the left lane and you can see some of the debris on the road, too. so arrest. he says police captured the man outside the laurel manor apartments in the secane section of the township. people at that complex complained of a man looking into their win tomorrow, "this is where i leave you" in theaters friday, september 19th. 14 i am here with none other than keke palmer. just 21 years old. she's about to make history for the second time. she's already tv's youngest talk show host ever. now, she's breaking more barriers. debuting tonight, the first african-american to portray cinderella on broadway. she's the youngest ever to portray cinderella on broadway. please welcome keke palmer. >> thank you so much. that was a beautiful intro. thank you. >> it's tonight. are you ready? >> i'm very nervous. i've been preparing. a i feel like i'm ready. >> there's so many people showing yo uh love online. they're so excited about your debut. nurse j. wants to know what inspired you to play cinderella? >> the opportunity. i always envisioned i would get the opportunity to do broadway. when i thought about it, i envisioned myself being much older. 30s and 40s. when the opportunity came up, i thought, keke, this may be the one. >> a lot of us grew up with cinderella. what did you think of the character? >> as a kid, i loved watching the movie. and when i saw the brandy version, i loved it even more because i was like, my gosh. this is like me. i could relate to it more, as far as my life and what i could do. big props to brandy for that. >> she played it in the movie. it did open up eyes. what are you hoping that people and girls of all walks of life. what do you want them to take away from seeing your performance? >> the thing that cinderella is about. specifically in our version, all things are possible. you have to believe in it. with me being the first african-american to do it on broadway, it encourages that message. you have to go for it. >> we fell in love with you eight years ago. was it eight years ago? >> it was back ten years ago. >> it wasn't? >> 11 when i shot it. 12 when it came out. >> this is what somebody, so sweet. kathy on instagram writes, the little spelling bee girl all grown up. what's it like growing up in the public eye? and you haven't had any missteps. >> i think it's been gradual for me. i worked and did my thing and had my own little thing going on. i felt like it wasn't too exposed. i go through my own stuff like any young adult does. but i have great parents. my life and my career is them raising me. >> you have spoken freely about that on your talk show and everything. and you've surrounded yourself with good people. on broadway, the wicked stepmother is sherri shepherd. >> who i love so much. this is my second project with sherri. she is so much fun. a chicagoan, just like myself. and we're having so much fun together. nervous togetherer. excited together. it's good to have a friend like her on the show with me. >> you are working hard. you had long rehearsal days to get ready for tonight. >> i wish i was a yournlist, so i could write about all of the hard work that goes into this. i don't think people realize the discipline it becomes to do broadway. this is a crazy experience. life-changing. >> it is. and you have handled everything, from the talk show to movies to broadway. and we have prince topher. he will be handing out -- >> amazing. how about joe is the sweetest guy ever. he's so much fun. taking me through this process. i wouldn't have wanted anybody else to do it. >> he's not handing out golden slippers. but golden tickets to tonight's debut of keke palmer. all of the best to you. >> thank you so much. >> you can see keke tonight on broadway. through january 3rd. we'll be right back.
