We have a lot of news to get to, beginning with the growing war in iraq. Mounting threats to our homeland. The government there asking for the u. S. Military to come back. They want american against al qaeda militants, marching towards baghdad right now. Terry moran is in Northern Iraq with all of the latest. Good morning, terry. Reporter iraq right now is gripped by desperation and fear. And the iraqi government, which three years ago, told u. S. Forces to get out of this country, is now asking for american help again. They want air power, bombing of the radical islamists who are now taking town after town across iraq. Like a fierce desert wind, the jihadists advance. The iraqi army is in full retreat. Simply melting away. The victorious fighters are the al qaedafounded group, the i. S. I. S. And they are fueled with ruthlessness and religious zeal. They call this the blessed invasion. The lightning speed of their conquest has shocked the government here and in washington. Theyve now taken mosul, iraqs secondlargest city. Tikrit, saddam husseins hometown. Baiji, an iraqi oil refinery town. And today, they are taking direct aim at baghdad. They are wellequipped and disciplined. And they have weapons abandoned by the iraqi army. And 500 million in cash seized from local banks. Chaos reigns here. Wounded children. Families with nowhere to go. And fear they will bomb their home. They will kill all of the people here. Reporter people here say it took just an hour for the iraqi army to desert the city of mosul, dropping their weapons, stripping off their uniforms and fleeing. American taxpayers paid 14 billion to train and equip that army. George . Terry, u. S. Officials believe this al qaeda army has become the singlegreatest terrorist threat to the United States. I was struck by the quote of one u. S. Official to the wall street journal. It says, when you look at this intelligence, it makes you want to kill yourself. Reporter it is a frightening prospect. Reporter after an emotional closed door meeting with House Republicans wednesday, eric k d cantor made it official. Effective jewel 31st, i will be stepping down as leader. Cantor, perhaps the most conservative republican leader. But he was defeated by a College Professor and tea partier, dave brat, who accused him of being too willing to compromise. There is Common Ground if we allow ourselves to work together. Reporter brat spent barely 100,000 on his campaign. The cantor campaign spent more than that at steakhouses. And i will tell the speaker of the house to reject that, too. Will the speaker listen . Jon karl, thanks very much. Were going to turn to details on the deadly shooting rampage in las vegas. Surveillance video shows the final standoff between police and the couple that killed three people, including two officers in an m bash. Pierre thomas is tracking the story. Reporter youre looking at the final fatal moments of two alleged killers. Jared and amanda miller, holed up at a walmart in las vegas. There they are in the auto section, caught on surveillance tape, as police secretly monitor them. Amanda is wounded. And it appears the couple is contemplating suicide. He points his gun at her. She points her gun at him. Looks like theyre shooting at each other. She just shot him. Reporter on wednesday, authorities corrected the record. In fact, just prior to this video, we see where the male was shot by police gunfire. Reporter so, police say they killed jared. And his wife took her own life. This all came after the millers had allegedly killed two Police Officers in a pizzary ya. Draping a one, a swastika and the revolution has begun. How you go from an action to murdering Police Officers, is something we all need to figure out as quickly as we possible can. Reporter but could the tragedy have been prevented . Neighbors say the couple had discussed killing police. And Authorities Say the millers had three encounters with police, including one about threats to a state Motor Vehicles office. But no hint of violence. And this morning, theres growing concern about domestic terrorism. The attack came only 72 hours after a selfstyled sovereign citizen attacked the white house in georgia, spewing antigovernment rhetoric. Homeland security and fbi officials are deeply concerned. Good morning, everyone. We begin with millions of americans in the path of extreme weather. Five tornadoes have been reported from kansas to pennsylvania. Trees split by lightning and tens of thousands of people have been left without power. This morning, the biggest threat from severe storms will be from Oklahoma City to mississippi. The forecast, in just a few minutes. And breaking news out of phoenix. An attack inside a catholic church. One priest is dead. Another is fighting for his life right now. Abcs Neal Karlinsky is there. Neal . Reporter cecilia, good morning. Just a terrible, terrible scene out here. Were at the mother of Mercy Mission in downtown phoenix. Police say they were called out here about 9 00 last night, after reports of a burglary. But when they showed up, they found two priests who had been shot. One of them, who they say was on the phone with 911, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The other priest was killed. They were both found in a residential portion of the church. Not in the sanctuary. A car was reportedly taken from here. But it was found just a short time later. Police say they have no suspects right now. Again, two priests shot, one killed. Cecilia . Neal karlinsky, thank you. Now, to the growing crisis along the southern border. We have new images of the thousands of Migrant Children streaming into the u. S. , without their parents, fleeing an outbreak of violence in central america. Border agents are placing them in Holding Centers. Critics say 80 of the children are not getting enough water or food. Half were denied medical care. And one in four has been physically abused. The senate has now approved 2 billion to address the crisis. New details this morning about Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahls troubled state of mind, even before he was tap chured by the taliban. According to the washington post, bergdahl was discharged from the coast guard for psychological reasons, prior to his army service. Meantime, in congress wednesday, defense secretary chuck hagel defended the prisoner swap that freed bergdahl, calling it a military operation that needed to be skept secret in order to succeed. And a spectacular fire on a fishing boat off canada. Two people onboard and their dog were able to paddle to safety in a smaller boat before being picked up by a whale watching vessel. No word on what started the fire. And finally, a moose on the loose inside a hotel in vail, colorado. Look at this. He couldnt find his way out. Hes scrambling for the door. Just a teeny moose. Overnight, a subway strike that crippled saw paolo was called off. But this morning, two of rios airports, threatening to stop thousands hoping to land for kickoff of the world cup. But for the americans, theyre going to face bigger problems. Their first group, so tough, its been called the group of death. Theyre facing off against ghana. Followed by portugal and germany in the first round. Two of the worlds top teams. Its the group of severe pain, if you will. Not quite death. Reporter even the head coach of the u. S. Mens National Team has his doubts. For us, now, talking about winning a world cup is just not realistic. You know . At the end of the day, soccer is a beautiful thing. Its unpredictable. And a European Team has never been able to come into an south American World cup and wrestle that world cup away from a south american team. Thats been the case. How about team usa . I saw you yesterday doing your i believe chant. I hate to break the news to you, robin. They probably are not going to go home with that world cup. But the good news for the United States is they are getting so much better. And even in this group of death, this is a terribly tough group theyre in. Group g ghana, portugal, another great player, Cristiano Ronaldo. And germany, with a successful world cup. Theres a possibility they can get out of this group. But it will be tough for them. Well, you know, its interesting because wherever you talk about brazil and football in the same sentence, they talk about it as this religion. Its in their soul. Its a spirit amongst them. It brings such happiness. And you walk around, you hear anger. You hear sadness. And thats about the 12 billion theyve been spending. And the people here, and ive never seen this before. The people here are angry about the amount of money thats being spent and the corruption. So, tonights game, brazil versus croatia, is big in that the mood of this country rests on that. All right. An outofcontrol car crashes into a gas station, just missing a hero cop who springs into action to save the day. Gio benitez has this remarkable story. Reporter take a look at this dramatic scene. A driver pumping gas in harrison, new york, last week. And then, this. Out of nowhere, a car flies in, crashing into the pump. And immediately, starting a massive fire. The man at the pump, new York State Police senior investigator, john vessio. Escaping the scene, just in the nick of time. The impact was very sudden. It was very quick. Reporter within two seconds, the car hits, the pump falls and the fire erupts. Actually went to look up. And see what was going on. And next thing i knew, the pump was coming down on top of me. Reporter watch as more drama unfolds. Vescio, at first darted away, and runs back after spotting the 70yearold driver who crashed the car after suffering a diabetic shock. And now, could not move. He was not responsive. I found when i got to the car, he was pretty much helpless. Reporter vescio struggles to get him out of the car. Dragging him out by his shirt. Only returning to get a first aid kit from his car. And there wasnt a moment to spare. Seconds later, a ball of fire consumes the car. Both men miraculously out of the danger zone. I think john did a very heroic thing. I think he starts off as a civilian. He becomes a victim. And then, his Police Training kicks in. And he actually saves somebodys life. Reporter and both men were obviously injured. And essentially taken to the hospital. But were told theyre doing well this morning. Thats the good news. That senior investigator out of the hospital. Unbelievably, he had ammunition in the trunk. He had to get everybody away. And he needed to do that. He did such a great job. Gio, thanks very much. Time for the weather. Even the presiding judge in the case says she was stunned by the simple and yet so powerful gesture when the victims mother in the courtroom. Look at this rare moment of forgiveness. Captured on camera. A devastated mother reaching out, embracing her daughters killer in court. Just before thanksgiving of 2012, 15yearold jordan howe brought his stepfathers gun on a school bus in miami. He fired it once at the ground. And when nothing happened, he pointed the gun at his friend. But this time, when he pulled the trigger, the gunfired, killing dejesus. She would have been here right now. She would have had the way to tell me, mom, forgive him. Reporter on tuesday, lordes mother, ady, speaking in court, still visibly shaken by the loss of her child. A painful experience parents should never reporter howe, now 16 years old, confessed immediately to the crime. Pleading guilty to three charges, including manslaughter, with a deadly weapon. I apologize for her loss. Reporter after meeting with the teenager and a judge, ady, who was initially demanding a harsh punishment, came up with a plea deal. And the court agreed. Howe will spend one year in a juvenile detention center. And will tour florida with ady, talking about the dangers of guns. If he fails to follow through, hell go back to court. I hope and pray that you do not squander this opportunity that youve been given. Reporter one mother, turning a tragic moment into a teen teachable one. I forgave him because i found peace. Because i feel like my daughter, now, is in peace. It wont bring my daughter back. But i keep her name alive. Reporter in an effort to save other children, ady plans to fight for schools to begin weapons classes. Teaching students the dangers of bringing firearms to schools. Reporter his parents are perfectly alive and well. We were clueless. We had no idea. Reporter police say that 911 call is a fake. Its called s. W. A. T. Ing, as in s. W. A. T. Teams. Celebritieses were the first targetses. Miley cyrus Hollywood Home was surrounded in 2012, after this call. I just shot my wife. First, an honest talk about the ups and downs of fatherhood. One thing that keeps us strong is our faith. Reporter thats the glue for you . The glue is the faith. Reporter what is the most important thing you want to teach your daughter . I want her to be compassionate. I want her to be thoughtful and respectful. Even though they put you up on a pedestal, they understand that some of them, hey, were all none of us are perfect. Thats one of my biggest fears. When at what point is she going to realize im not perfect . It happened sooner than i anticipated. Reporter while hes dads thought about their weaknesses. I have a surprise for you right now. We decided to show them what theyre most important critics really think. I dont think i would know how to love so beautifully. Everything he does, he always thinks about his family. And always does the best. Hi always lets us have ice cream. Hes a really good teach center. Yes. I think hes a the best teacher in the house. Hes always there to help me with my math homework, history homework. He never lets us down. He always tries to bring us up. Even if its a hard, tough lesson. Its unmatched. I love going to baseball games with him. I love just spending time with him in general. My dads a big dad because he helps me with stuff and hell make breakfast for me in the morning sometimes. He supports me in everything i do. What makes daddys snuggle so special . Because i love him. That was good. Reporter pretty great, right . Yeah. Very moved. And im very pleased that they said those things. Its a great validation. Its an awesome validation. I would say about 95 of what they say is very true. But i will say, i think my snuggles are fantastic. Reporter when your kids are ready to be parents themselves, whats the most important thing you tell them . The most important thing i would tell them, is be loving and patient. There are so many wonderful moments. But you have to be willing to make some sacrifices. I would say be an example. You know . This is something dear to you. And something you went through as a child. I partnered with Entertainment Industry foundation and Safeway Foundation because they wanted to eliminate childhood hunger in america. And i love the word eliminate. Not just help. But to eradicate it. And i do have a personal story because i was a kid who grew up hungry. I grew up in abject poverty. I grew up in buildings that had no plumbing and no phone. And infested with rats and no food. And what it caused me to do, it caused me to steal food. It caused me to jump in dumpsters looking for food, as a kid. And it caused me to have a lot of shame because i used that to identify who i was. And then, i partnered with safeway and Entertainment Industry foundation. And you find out that one in five kids suffer from some form of childhood hunger, going to school hungry. Insecure homes. 17 million children that you begin to understand, its not just your problem. Its a problem on a wider scale in the richest country of the world. And it was my way of reconciling the past. And reconciling my childhood. In the short time, its hard to raise 4. 5 million. But its so powerful to have that campaign. And for also, for young people who are going through what they are going through, to look at you and say, okay. I can get through this. And when we see you, on the big screen, and going back to television. Working with shonda rhimes. Absolutely. Tell us about that show. How to get away with murder . Its outside of my comfort zone because i play someone who is sexy and mysterious. Usually im not mysterious. You know who i am. Im always warm and fuzzy and im never messy. And im not touching any hunky guys that have no shirts on. This is a chance for me to be outside of my comfort zone. And i think thats a great metaphor for life. You know . At this stage in my life. I want to be uncomfortable. That means im taking risks. And youre in great hands with shonda. She owns thursday nights. Im in great hands with shonda. But i dont know what to expect.
