well good wednesday morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm alex perez in for t.j. holmes. we begin with the recovery operation resuming across a wild field of debris. >> the germanwings went down yesterday with 150 on board before slam nothing a remote mountainside. overwhelming heartbreak for these families in barcelona where the flight took off and in germany where it was heading. >> this as all that's left of the plane, tiny pieces scattered everywhere. the plane's black box was damaged but can be reconstructed. >> abc's molly hunter has the latest from our french town a few miles from the site. molly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reena and alex. it is a cold morning at the base of the alps where search operations have resumed. five miles away and bodies and debris will be brought here to this staging area. it is a grim task complicated by extremely rough terrain at the crash site. with daylight this morning workers are back at the mile-wide debris field, what's left of germanwings flight 9525. some workers even spending the night in the mountains. today they'll be looking for clues into why the plane went down here shattering into thousands of pieces. the plane left barcelona for dusseldorf tuesday morning 40 minutes into the flight something went wrong. a recovered black box is already being analyzed hopefully it will explain why the airbus plunged from 38,000 feet falling at a rate of 400 miles an hour before vanishing from radar. >> the debris field clearly says it impacted the terrain and controlled flight at a very high speed probably around 425 miles an hour. >> reporter: eye much witnesses describe hearing the moment of impact. 'we heard a loud sound like dynamite" she says. a number of towns have plunged into grief. heartbreak. 16tenth graders and two teachers were returning home from studying in spain. now they're all gone. also on board two famed opera singers one holding her baby. today family members are expected here and the leaders of french and germany are expected to visit the crash site. snow showers here making the challenges here even more difficult. molly hunter abc news at the base of the french alps. >> and the plane was a top-selling airbus a320 and underwent a routine check in germany just a day before the crash. >> the aircraft is considered a workhorse of modern aviation. with a great safety record there have been 12 fatal crashes involving the a320 since they started operating in 1988. the most recent that air asia flight that went down in the java sea last december. the most memorable airbus accident the 2009 miracle on the hudson when captain sully sullenberger made the emergency landing on the river. well officials say there's no distress signal from the germanwings pilot just before the plane went down. >> as investigators scour the wreckage for answers abc's david kerley takes a look at the leading theories as to what may have gone wrong. >> reporter: a handful of possibilities are top of the mind for investigators given it was just one minute after reaching 38,000 feet that the jetliner nose down descending 1 1/2 to 2 times faster than normal making an emergency descent. >> looking at the rate of descent and the profile we're aware of it appears to be intentional maneuver. why? we don't know. >> reporter: one possibility, a quick depressurization lack of oxygen meaning the pilots could vic incapacitated. smoke in the cockpit making it difficult to see or operate. a third, was there a problem the pilots were trying to deal with and followed emergency procedures to lose altitude and work the issue. but there was no radio call. >> do you fly the airplane first? possibly damaging with heavy smoke, fire on the airplane. it may be priorities have not gotten to communicating yet. >> reporter: david kerley abc news washington. >> amid that tragedy there was a fortunate twist of fate for a swedish soccer team. the players were supposed to be on the germanwings airbus that crashed but hours earlier they decided to switch flights. it was a change of plans that saved their lives. the team's sporting director tweeting you can say we were very lucky. now, stay with abc news for the late latest on the tragedy in the alps and have an update later on this broadcast and team coverage on "good morning america." a pair of tragedies at home two officers killed in the line of duty. in california a veteran san jose police officer was killed. he responded to a call about a man threatening suicide. when police arrived on the scene, they were met by a hail of gunfire. one officer struck and died at the scene. san jose's mayor calls it the city's darkest hour. a state trooper died exchange of gunfire with a suspected bank robber in wisconsin. the trooper was following the vehicle when it happened in the fond du lac. the suspect is also dead. it's believed he was involved in at least one attempted bank robbery and possibly a fatal carjacking. millions of people in the midwest are bracing for more severe weather today. take a look at this hail falling in missouri. damaging storms possible in the southern plains from northern texas to oklahoma and into missouri and the southern ohio valley. isolated tornadoes also a possibility. and winds gusting to 35 miles an hour knocked out power to thousands in los angeles late last night. more than 3,000 homes and businesses went black in beverly hills and hundreds more in west hollywood. the wind also knocking down a tree briefly trapping a man inside his car. drier and milder weather along the west coast today. low 80s in los angeles. much colder and showers further north from portland to seattle. much of the gulf coast will be dry and warm. high 80s in miami. u.s. troops will be leaving afghanistan at a slower rate than originally planned. president obama announced the change after meeting with that country's new president who requested they stay. almost 10,000 noncombat troops will remain through the end of this year. nearly double the number originally planned but all troops will still be out by the end of 2016. at the boston bombing trial jurors were shown video of dzhokhar tsarnaev outside a new hampshire gun range. then walking off with his older brother. an fbi agent testified they practiced shooting 9 mm gun, the same used to kill a police officer and used in that final gunfight. today italy's highest court will decide whether to support amanda knox's murder conviction or her acquittal. it's been more than seven years since she was a college student studying abroad and her roommate was found brutally murdered. she was convicted then acquitted but then the acquittal was overturned. knox returned to the u.s. in 2011 and vowed never to go back. but if today's ruling reinstates her conviction an extradition battle may follow. well new this morning research on distracted driving showing its much worse than anyone thought. plus kidnapped and held for ransom. the desperate search under way. new details overnight about where investigators are focusing their attention. riders rescued. passengers evacuated off a roller coaster. we're learning exactly what went wrong. the students on this bus are hoping for no unexpected stops today when their driver fell unconscious yesterday. the bus, you can see right there, hit this home. no one was hurt and the students were okay. but the driver was taken to the hospital and the house had to be shored up to prevent its collapse. well could the disappearance of a college freshman 40 years ago in vermont be linked to millionaire murder suspect robert durst durst. lynne shulze was last seen then and vanished without a trace leaving everything she owned behind. aside from location police have little to go on. >> all we can say at this time they were in the same proximate location in the same time frame. >> fbi agents arrested durst earlier on suspicions of murderinging his friend susan berman 15 years ago. they have also advised local investigators wherever he had lived to examine cold cases. jesse jackson jr. will be released from a federal prison in alabama tomorrow. jackson has been serving a 2 1/2-year sentence for illegally spending campaign funds. he'll serve the rest of that at a halfway house in washington, d.c. jackson tells another former lawmaker he'll have some sort of job and will have to report to a probation officer. some riders at a universal theme park in orlando, florida, spent a lot more time on a roller coaster than they expected to. the hulk stalled last night about 20 people were immediately able to get off the ride. but story, the recovery operation resuming this morning after that deadly plane crash in the french alps. >> the germanwings passenger yet was heading to dusseldorf from barcelona when it went down with 150 people on board. we learned overnight one black box has been recovered but it's likely damaged and this morning the first bodies are expected to be removed from the crash site. and another story we've been watching from the san francisco bay area. a 29-year-old woman has been kidnapped from her boyfriend's home and possibly being held for ransom. the boyfriend told police that denise huskins had been forcibly taken in the middle of the night. they found her car but won't reveal where it was found. a disturbing reminder of the sandy hook shooting has disappeared. the house the killer shared with his mother has been knocked down. several asked it be demolished saying it was a constant reminder. it will be left as an open space. he killed his mother an 26 victims at the school bair committing suicide. a house near boston is now a crime scene after someone apparently rigged it to explode. the house's owner and electrician were there yesterday. that's when the electrician noticed something odd in a wall two-gallon jug filled with possibly gasoline connected to a switch which was designed to spark an explosion. police say they already have persons of interest. a helicopter has gone down in the waters off maryland's eastern shore. the chopper was en route from a nearby naval air station to new jersey when it lost power in about 3,000 feet. it landed in very shallow water. the pilot and the passenger were able to walk away. and some more lucky people on this bus which got stuck on a road in brazil. take a look at this. the road gave way to floodwaters taking the bus with it. the bus stayed upright heading straight downstream there. you can see it all of those on board were able to escape unharmed. well maybe playing the alcoholic womanizer don draper for so long might have taken its toll. jon hamm's agent confirms he just completed a 30-day stint for alcohol abuse. he spent that time at a connecticut facility. he finished a program just in time to promote the series analyzed 1700 videos recorded inside the vehicles and found distractions were a factor in 60% of those crashes. that's four times higher than police reports had indicated. the biggest we've been watching from the san francisco bay area. a 29-year-old woman has been kidnapped from her boyfriend's home and possibly being held for ransom. the boyfriend told police that denise huskins had been forcibly taken in the middle of the night. they found her car but won't reveal where it was found. a disturbing reminder of the sandy hook shooting has disappeared. the house the killer shared with his mother has been knocked down. several asked it be demolished saying it was a constant reminder. it will be left as an open space. he killed his mother an 26 victims at the school bair committing suicide. a house near boston is now a crime scene after someone apparently rigged it to explode. the house's owner and electrician were there yesterday. that's when the electrician noticed something odd in a wall two-gallon jug filled with possibly gasoline connected to a switch which was designed to spark an explosion. police say they already have persons of interest. a helicopter has gone down in the waters off maryland's eastern shore. the chopper was en route from a nearby naval air station to new jersey when it lost power in about 3,000 feet. it landed in very shallow water. the pilot and the passenger were able to walk away. and some more lucky people on this bus which got stuck on a road in brazil. take a look at this. the road gave way to floodwaters taking the bus with it. the bus stayed upright heading straight downstream there. you can see it all of those on board were able to escape unharmed. well maybe playing the alcoholic womanizer don draper for so long might have taken its toll. jon hamm's agent confirms he just completed a 30-day stint for alcohol abuse. he spent that time at a connecticut facility. he finished a program just in time to promote the series analyzed 1700 videos recorded inside the vehicles and found distractions were a factor in 60% of those crashes. that's four times higher than police reports had indicated. the biggest
