This is a special edition of action news saturday morning as we get going for the papal weekend. Action news has reporters fanned out across the area from the parkway to the basilica to the airport, and were riding the regional rails along with you. Reporter good morning, we certainly do have an extraordinary view on eakens oval. We know so many viewers have been anticipating the visit and weve been planning for this joyous occasion. Now that the sun is up, take a look at at the stage here. Members of the media and security folks and the faithful are arriving. I want to give you a behind the scenes prospective what its like to cover such an extraordinary event in philadelphias history. It is 2 00 a. M. , our alarms went off at 12 45 a. M. This is the meade Transportation Center from media Transportation Center from here well be wanded for security. We wanted to make sure that we would make the 4 00 a. M. Bus in plenty of time to broadcast at 5 30 a. M. Were first in line, so well be on that. 3 05 a. M. I want through the metal detecter and from here well board the media buses. 4 15 were on the bus for the parkway. Take a look outside this has to be the safest most secure place in america. Erin ohern is here. Were rolling right now heading to the parkway. You can see the streets are clear, we have a police escort. We pass a number of jumbotrons along the way. There are 40 of them set up along the parkway so people can get a clear view of whats happening. We should be at the parkway in no time. Reporter the pope is is expected to arrive at 9 30 and go to saints peter and paul for a mass. This afternoon hell deliver a speech on immigration from Independence Hall and the papal parade on the parkway followed by the festival of families at eakens oval. Pilgrims who have been waiting to see the pope camping out in south philadelphia. These parishners are from the archdiocese of newark, new jersey. They stayed in tents. Others stayed inside the church on the 2300 block of south 18th street. They will get up and get going and make their way over to where Katherine Scott is, live in logan square with a firsthand look at security and anticipated crowds there. Reporter its early but people are here along the parkway. Some were curious, others are here because they want to get a good spot for when the pope arrives. Some are here for the festival of families and others are waiting outside the basilica. They want to catch a glimpse of pope francis when he arrives to celebrate mass this morning at the basilica. There are Concession Stands and benches in the area. This is a popular spot to grab breakfast, you might see seem clumping their coffee its a similar spot for people to hang out and congregate as they wait for the popes arrival. Look at the view, you can see this beautiful shot of city hall and the pilgrims making their way up the parkway. This will be a long day for some of these pilgrims. They walked here to go through security and making sure sure they have a prime spot to see the pope. Ive heard people talking about the energy in the city. The thousands who are here during the world meeting of family and those who stayed the weekend to hear the popes message in person, even if they have to stand far away they say they want to be here and their families to be here to experience the moments with the other families from around the world. You can see people on the parkway this morning. Its going to be a long day, weve seen people bring chairs with them to make the wait a little more comfortable. But people are excited to see the pope this morning to celebrate mass, they are waiting aby the basilica. They are gathering. Thanks, katherine. Reporter good morning, this is the paoli train station, youre right, thousands are expected to use the septa rails. Thousands will be using the train system to get into philadelphia. The busiest station will be here at paoli. Its been a slow start. We have still pictures from earlier today before the sun came up. The first three trains went off with 150 people each. Its been a slow start. The last train departed with 200 people. Well have a big build as the morning goes on. Let me scene set to your right my left is the train platform. The fourth train left five minutes ago, septa personnel is here ready for the next crowd to build. This is the staging area. If youre familiar with the train station you know this is the parking lot. Over here 40 yards to my left you see a group of people who have gathered for the popes arrival. These are family members of the band the Shanahan High School band that will be performing for pope francis from doylestown. There are 100 band members that will be performing for the pope. The delegation that is greeting the pope will be led by archbishop archbishop chaput. Governor tom wolf and frances wolf and mayor nutter and lisa nutter will be here. One family was chosen to be here for the popes arrival that is Richard Boyles who was shot in the line of duty 2008 in a north philadelphia shootout that killed his partner, 30yearold patrick mcdonald. Boyles and his family will present the pope with the Mountain Laurel flowers, the official flower flower of the commonwealth of pennsylvania. Pope francis addressed the work of Police Officers and firefighters and offered his supportive prayers for the work that they do. This is expected at the airport. The that means you can take the boulevard to the schuylkill expressway westbound. City avenue, 10 00 p. M. , closed southbound between bell month and route 30. We talked about the vine express way being closed. The ben franklin bridge is shut down except for pedestrians. The admiral wilson boulevard leading to the ben. 676 northbound leading to the ben. The crowd is slowly building theres a lot of excitement people have slept here on the the grounds in front of the basilica overnight just to get a glimpse of the pope as he comes in. They are coming from countries all over the world. About two thousand people will get a seat, two thousand lucky people will get a seat inside the basilica for the mass, they include people of faith across the region along with families, newlyweds this being the world meeting of families, some of them will be celebrating 50 years of marriage.
