one witness. live in crescentville, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news. sharrie. >> i'll take it. series of fires set overnight has philadelphia police looking for what could be a serial arsonist. at least five vehicles and a dumpster were set ablaze early this morning. three of the cars near 60th and west columbia streets in overbrook. not far away on jefferson by 57th another car was destroyed by flames and the driver of a mercedes says she was taking her son to school when her husband saw her car on fire along with an even more frightening discovery. >> it was paper inside of my wife's gas tank. >> he says the tank was full and the car could have exploded. firefighters were also dual a mini market at 56th and master to put out a dumpster fire. no one was hurt there. right now police are combing surveillance video looking for clues. >> turning now to the accuweather forecast and it feels more like a july day instead of october out there. >> yeah, we are feeling summer-like temperatures out there and there's more of that to come. meteorologist adam joseph enjoying the outdoor temperatures and he's got the latest. >> yeah, this is the first of a long string of 80 he degree days ahead for this week. in fact it's been some time since those numbers in philadelphia and the surrounding areas have surpassed 80 degrees. you have to go back to september 23rd. so far today 81 degrees. breaking back into the 80's and again, you can get to enjoy today, you have a few more days to pick from. right now 78 in the lehigh valley same for reading 81 wilmington, 78 millville. 78 at the atlantic city airport. it was 80 or so there the last hour but the sea breeze kicking in knocking those numbers back a little bit. at the shore it's about 71. as we look at the numbers in the eastern half of the country he we're not the only one seeing the summer surge. chicago 81, cincinnati 82, 90 in dallas texas and new orleans 86 degrees. and today those temperatures are running 15 degrees above summer. tuesday, wednesday, close to 20 degrees above normal and still on thursday, we're looking at numbers around 15 degrees above normal so feeling like summer will that continue with record highs likely to be broken over the next several days and then a weekend reality check comes in. we'll talk about the other side of the story with that cooler weather to return in here and that means lots of people have had to dig in their dressers for the shorts and the t's. jannell simon made attention to the forecast. he was dressed and ready for summer like temperatures. >> he they said it was going to be about 80 degrees. so i figure i'm taking off work today might as well put on some shorts. >> reporter: this blast of warm weather is a welcome surprise bringing folks out for a walk along the delaware river or maybe a bike ride around town. >> i love it absolutely love it. you know, i was in memphis last week it was 90 and i brought it back with me. >> i love when it's 80 out. i hate being told. i love it. i hope we can have the rest of the week 80's. >> it's a nice touch right before it gets too cold but what's going to happen is it's just going to get cold all of a sudden. >> reporter: tom edison cuts the fire department lawn. he had to mow it dan hopes the hot temperatures means his clients will need another round of grass cutting this season. >> i'm ready to get the tank tops back output the long johns away. my wife just e he tead all the chefs last week and got the winter clothes outer. i think she going have to get the totes back out. >> i'm a in las vegas with a look at what's most important to voter there is. lauren. >> reporter: good afternoon brian. yeah, new polls showing clinton and trump just neck and neck within a margin of error and election is 22 days away it seems close right but a number of nevada voters that i spoke to are still undecided. they're very much looking for clarity when the candidates face off this week. just blocks away from the las vegas strip, people who call sin city home are focused on this upcoming vegas act, the election. key issues for voters we met in the battleground state. >> immigration will be one. >> our security basically. what's happening around the world. >> taking care of the elderly as you get older. >> reporter: even though donald trump's hotel looms large over the strip experts say the union heavy area is an advantage for hillary clinton. >> in my opinion, she has the experience. >> reporter: but religious and republican leanings outside the big city favor donald trump. >> i'll probably go with trump. >> reporter: experts say the hispanic population at 28 percent represents a key group of voters and the republican candidate has some work to do. >> he has to figure out a way to recover some latinos because it's the fastest growing voting group in nevada. >> who are you going to vote for. >> i don't know. i honestly don't know. >> reporter: when it comes to her top priorities u.s. born latina rebecca rios believes trump has a better plan to tackle the company's debt but not immigration. >> the entire plan he has on immigration i feel like it's absurd. >> reporter: the asian-american vote is also of growing importance. artist michelle barn heart says she may sit this one out. >> my biggest concern is that i don't think we have a good candidates. >> reporter: so, the battle lines still very much being drawn and you know here is where timing could matter on election day. an abc political analyst says if it still has not been decide nevada is a in both trump and toomey would defund planned parenthood. on abortion: trump: "there has to be some form of punishment" toomey: "i would suggest that we have penalties for doctors who perform them." pat toomey and donald trump: too dangerous for pennsylvania women. >> ♪ >> a massive operation is under way right now in attempts to loosen isis's control in iraq. an iraqi commander says the operation to reclaim the city of mosul is going very well. he adds that iraqi troops are moving forward as planned and are said to have retain about 80 square miles of land already. mosul is the last remaining isis strong hold in iraq. a leader in the region is calling this a turning point on the war against terrorism. the u.s.-led coalition has been unleashing airstrikes and sharing intelligence with ground crews. full train service resumed this morning at the hoboken terminal. new jersey transit says all of its tracks have been repaired and are now in use. it was a little over two weeks ago that a train slammed into the platform killing one person and injuring more than 100 others. the station itself was severely damaged in the crash and is still undergoing repairs. >> more students than ever are graduating high school in the united states. president obama announced today that america's high school graduation rate has hit a new high, 83.2 percent. increases were seen across all ethnic groups and the same goes for students with disabilities and those from low income families. but while applauding the progress, president obama also told students to look past the 12th grade. >> a high school education these days is not enough. by 2020, two out of three job openings require some form of higher education. >> now, america's graduation rate has steadily increased since 2008 when states started using a uniform way to track student progress. every philadelphia school will be able to buy some brand new classroom supplies thanks to a major gift. this morning principals across the city learned they're getting grants from office depot. the action cam was at albert greenfield school in center city as the $167,000 donation was announced. superintendent dr. william hite revealed each school will get $750 because of this. office depot is funning a senior of the month program which a wards a $500 scholarship to two deserving students. >> row he want university is expanding its fossil park in plan clue what township. alumni jean and ricked -- r. >> reporter::c edelman made the donation. the museum will feature the ancient creatures of south jersey including dinosaurs. the edelmans are opening that their gift will make the park a destination for visitors from around the world. >> it has a tremendous opportunity to get children particularly excited about science and engineering and if we're going to remain competitive on the global economy, then we have to produce more scientists and engineersly. >> the edelmans' $25 million gift is the second largest in university history. the couple met on campus in 1977 then wanted to help educate students for generations to come. >> all right, speaking of money here's how yours faired today. wall street making us work a little harder. the dow slipping 52 points, the nasdaq off 14 and change. the s & p falling just about six and a half points on the day. macy's upping the ante this holiday season. not only is that department store sticking with its plans to open up on thanksgiving it's opening stores an hour earlier. locations will be open at 5:00 p.m. thanksgiving day and will close at 2:00 a.m. and rehe open again three hours later 5:00 in the morning on black friday. this is the first year the department store will be closing during the night but unlike several other stores, it will still do business on the holiday thursday. in a few years pepsi will have a lot less sugar in it. pepsi company announced it plans to cut the calories and sugars in dozens of its products. it promises many will have 100 calories or less. change is due to customer preferences and new diet guidelines from the world health organization. >> time for a check of that warm accuweather forecast. >> no complaints here. adam joseph standing by inside. who brought you inside, adam? >> the boss. >> okay. >> go blame them. [laughter] >> beautiful out there today if you like that summer warmth once again. a lot of sunshine after some morning fog around. we look live on sky6 at the ben franklin bridge and again a marvelous monday if you like the 80's. in fact we're still above in philadelphia, wilmington and just below it for allentown, reading, millville, dover in the upper 70's but many of those thermometers did touch at least that 80-degree mark here this afternoon. and temperatures running a good 10 plus degrees above where we were this time yesterday. especially in the far inland locations down the shore. not as impressive as it was without that 24 hour change but still a good six to 9 degrees above where we were on sunday. high clouds streaming through as a frontal boundary is just to the north and that will continue its migration off to the north before it slides back to the south during the middle of the week. tonight very mild out there and it's going to be fairly clear above but after midnight with these very warm temperatures it will develop some fog late once again by the morning hours 61 in philadelphia, 60 wilmington, 61 in dover, 64 in the boardwalk in allentown trenton and the upper 50's. now, yesterday evening nasa was supposed to send a rocket up into the atmosphere, a private industry rocket here near wallops island just down to our south but it was scrapped yesterday because of some technical issues but now supposed to be launched at 7:40 p.m. this evening. so, when it gets launched, we're going to see it between one to two minutes after it's launched very low in the southeastern horizon so look southeast right around 7:40 but by 7:42 if you haven't seen anything, you know whether or not they didn't send it or you missed it 'cause it's going to be really quick going by on that he low horizon to the south and east. day planner high 86 for tomorrow as we reach possible some records here. 83 already by 2 o'clock in the afternoon. 85 at 5 o'clock. and as we take a look at some of the records that will be tied if not broken here, for philadelphia, allentown, trenton, wilmington and the atlantic city airport, some of those records going back to 1908. as we look at the four day at 4:00 forecast the official high tomorrow should come in right around 86 degrees, morning fog to record warmth with the sun returning. another record of 85 on wednesday but more in the way of clouds on wednesday as the front nearby. near records again, 80 on thursday and then cooler weather comes in on friday, some sun, a lot of clouds, maybe a shower at 71 residents who he believe of they've seen a mountain lion rolling around. a hunter's camera captured this grainy black and white picture of the animal. new jersey fish and wildlife say they cannot tell exactly what it is from this video. you're asked to call animal control to report any additional sightings. a new jersey native killed in action in afghanistan will be forever remembered in gloucester county. today officials renamed the deptford post office for first lieutenant salvatore korma the second. a plaque with his name on it was unveiled outside that building on hurffville road. his mother norcross led charge in getting that post office renamed. >> it was jury appreciation day at the philadelphia courts. court leaders wandered citizens to know that being a juror is a valid service that "action news" continues with outrage over new jersey's black bear haunt. >> penn state responds to the lawsuit filed by mike mcqueary. the reason attorneys say he can't get a job. >> and seven-year-old girl has a very important message to deliver. hear what she wants people to know about down's syndrome. >> but first at 4:30, does this look like anyone you know? that's what police are asking. the fbi released this composite sketch today increasing their efforts to find the bank robber dubbed the straw hat bandit. >> investigators think he's robbed 11 banks across montgomery and bucks counties in the past four years. the most recent in july at the pnc in north wales. "action news"'s walter perez live at that location off welsh road. walter you have the latest here u hey, guys, the fbi held a news conference a short time ago releasing new information about this case. they say they now beliefy they know what kind of vehicle the suspect is driving and as you mentioned, they're pretty sure they know what he looks like. investigators say through the help of witnesses they have what they believe is a very accurate composite sketch of the so-called straw hat bandit. authorities believe this man is responsible for 11 armed bank robberies in montgomery and bucks counties over the past four years. in each case the assailant has worn different outfits including a suit and tie hoodies and of course the straw hat for which he's best known. in fact, only one thing has remained constant through each holdup. >> the assailant has displayed a black colored semi automatic handgun during each of the robberies. >> reporter: authorities say the suspect is likely driving a vehicle that looks like this one. they describe it as a white late model gmc sierra or chevy silverado. the bandit is described as a white man between 6 feet and six-two, 200 pounds between the ages of 40 and 60. it's believed because the robberies occurred in the same area it's quite possible he lives somewhere in the northern section of the delaware valley. >> now, given his clean cut appearance we feel our suspect is hiding in plain sight. he could live in your neighborhood. >> reporter: the fbi says the straw hat bandit has gotten away with at least $100,000 combined and they are very anxious to catch him before he strikes again. >> fortunately during the 11 robberies, no shots have been fired. however, we feel that it's only matter of time before someone gets hurt. >> wales, walter perez channel6 "action news." >> all right, walter, thank you. right now in wilmington, police are on the scene of a serious crash between a car and a motorcycle. this happened just after 3 o'clock this afternoon near the intersection of 28th street and northeast boulevard. police say the motorcyclist lost control and crashed into that car. suffered serious injuries and was flown to christiana hospital. the driver of the car suffered minor injuries. a teenager was shot to death execution style and now philadelphia police are looking for his killer. the victim was found shot in the back of the head on the 2900 block of roseville street in kensington. police have not yet released the victim's identity nor have they revealed a motive for this crime. >> the man who testified that he saw jerry sandusky abuse a young boy was in court today to prove he was wrongly fired. former assistant football coach mike mcqueary is suing penn state university claiming he was defamed retaliated against and misled by high ranking administrators. but today in court attorneys for the university argued it's not their fault mcqueary can't find a new job. they say mcqueary never developed a network of contacts to help him get into position. the trial is expected to last about two weeks. a grocery store in delaware county was damaged after an suv crashed right into it. it happened around 12:30 this afternoon at acme in concorde township. no one was injured in the crash but the building as you can see did suffer some damage. police are still trying to find out what squeeze out one, maybe two 80-degree days in a month but this late in a stretch of four days in a row is pretty unusual. as we take a look this is the beginning of a very warm week. philadelphia international airport the sun is shining temperature 81. dewpoints back to near 60 degrees and it may start to even feel more humid the next couple of days with a south-southwesterly wind. beautiful shot in cape may. a lot of blue not only the color of the ocean there but the sky kind of matching one another. 70 degrees. it's much cooler there with an ocean breeze. those dewpoints running much higher at 66. as we take a look at princeton live on sky6 not too shabby here, just high clouds around 79 degrees, southwesterly wind and the pressure 29.86 but all good things must come to an end. are facing for major disruptions if employees go through with a planned strike november 1st. union workers authorized the strike yesterday that is if they cannot reach a new contract before then. they want better pay and benefits. a strike would not affect regional rail lines but all buses, trolleys and the subways would be shut down. septa says it is hoping to reach a compromise. >> from our new jersey news room now there's growing outrage today after reports surfaced that pedals the bear was killed during the state's bare hunter last week. petals became famous after he was seen walking up right in new jersey two years ago. a facebook page reports a hunter brought the bear to a reporting station. pedals was never tagged by fish and wildlife so there's no way to positively identify him as pedals the bear. a petition to stop the new jersey black bear hunt has gotten more than 25,000 signatures. >> well, a contract show down between pennsylvania state university system and its faculty union could mean trouble for more than 100,000 students. "action news" anchor rick williams live in the news room now with more on that story. hi, rick. >> yeah, get that last name right. >> i know, i should be able to say it. >> thank you sharrie. in less than two days faculty at more than a dozen universities will walk offer the job over a fight concerning pay and benefits and that could spell trouble for students across the state. many are worried about the possibility of weekend classes or even worse, the cancellation of the semester. john rawlins spoke with students today. he'll have more from them coming up tonight on "action news" at 5 o'clock. also coming up tonight in health check, troubling new numbers regarding pennsylvania teenagers and alcohol and tobacco use. the research that could give parents cause for concern. some of the stories we're working on for you when we see you coming up a little bit later on "action news" at 5 o'clock. back to the studio. brian we'll see you later. >> rick williams thank you very much. philadelphia police welcomed new officers to the force today after eight months of training, class 377 graduated from the police academy during this certainly at temple university. the men and women were sworn in to protect the citizens of philadelphia and commissioner richard ross thanked them for their dedication. a local catholic school is celebrating a new state of the art learning space. saint malachi opened its new building on thompson street in north philadelphia. it has an outdoor playground. it will be home to the mural that pope francis helped create during his visit last year. saint maliki is one of independent mission schools providing a catholic education to students of all faiths in low income neighborhoods. mayor jim kenney was treated to a tour there today. >> the university of the arts is under new leadership. the school official technological welcomed its new president david yeager during a performance filled inauguration ceremony at the merriam theater today. and several people accepted honorary degrees including film producer ron yortza known for his work on movies including nebraska little miss sunshine and cold mountain. >> some people are nervous flyers. see what one passenger brought on board to help comfort him. >> plus, the man and good samaritan risk their lives to save a driver. find out how they were able to pull a driver from the fiery suv. >> and a plan who shot at george zimmerman in an apparent road rage incident was sentenced. his punishment coming up. pat toomey and donald trump: they're just wrong for the women of pennsylvania. majority pac is responsible for the content of this advertising. >> despite flames shooting from this car, good samaritans ran to the scene and risked their lives to save the driver. about half a dozen bystanders created a human chain so that they could pull the driver to safety. this crash happened this weekend in central florida. witnesses say for some unknown reason the driver became combative and had to be restrained by two police officers after they pulled him out of the wreckage. the crash is still under investigation. well, the plan who shot at george zimmerman's vehicle during a road rage confrontation has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. 38-year-old matthew apperson was found guilty last month of attempted second degree murder and armed aggravated assault. apperson said it was self-defense when he shot at zimmerman last year in florida. zimmerman is the former ne who was acquitted of killing trayvon martin in 2012. >> scary clowns creeping around communities across the country he are now impacting halloween costume choices. the retail giant target is pulling clown masks from their shelves and also from online. a target representative says the decision was made out of "sensitivity to the issue at hand." all this attention on clowns is having one positive. the he company halloween express says its clown costumes sales are up 239 percent this year. all right. a young girl's inspiring message about down's syndrome is going viral and her mother hopes it teaches people that being different is actually a good thing. >> do you have down's syndrome no, not scary. >> she's being a self advocate for people with disability and that they have a love of life. >> we love this story. no, it's not scare he re. every year during down's syndrome wearness month, sophie he ya''s mom tries to reach out to her friends and family about down's syndrome. but this year she decided to let her daughter do the talking and put her video on facebook. sophia was born in the ukraine but was adopted by the family when she was just 16 months old. sophia actually has an older brother who also has down's syndrome. jennifer sanchez says sophia is a ball the blue route town to the vine street expressway right now. taking a look at the big picture speeds across the region very low, single digits on 95 northbound and very slow going on the blue route as you approach 95 you can see 14 miles per hour there. few incidents to tell you about. the first one is 202 southbound in malvern a tractor-trailer taking out the right lane. and over to new jersey we go, 95 southbound at cottman avenue there's an accident in the left-hand lane and the overbrook section of the city we have a water main break to report at 60th street and lansdowne avenue. we'll keep no matter where you were as we take a look at the action cam which is in wilmington, delaware, at the smith bridge right over the brandywine creek. you're looking from the delaware side towards the pennsylvania side, kind of splits the two states there. a beautiful shot with a lot of blue upstairs, just a few high clouds and notice again not much in the way of color just yet around the region. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan, not finding any precipitation whatsoever. we had fog early this morning but we've got to wait for these consistently really cold nights to try to stop that sugar process in the trees and try to bring about their natural color. as we look at the numbers, 81 in philadelphia, the same for wilmington, 79 in dover, 78 in millville. at the shore southerly wind, the ocean now down in the 60's so we stayed in the low 70's there while just about eight to 10 miles inland it did reach the 80's today close to the atlantic city airport. as we look at satellite and radar, it's very quiet across the country. front is to the north here and this is the boundary, all the heat is bubbling and cooking in the eastern half of the country with high pressure in control and that high really not going move all that much for the next several days. so, for tonight, very mild, areas of fog going to develop once again, 56 in the suburbs, 61 for center city with a south-southwesterly wind very light four to 8 miles an hour. again, we are wedged in between the warm front and the cold front. that's called the warm sector. we get double barrel high pressure. winds around the high are clockwise so we're pumping it in from the southwest so tomorrow slightly more humid as well as warmer, up to 86 degrees. in fact as we take a look at the map here for tomorrow, anywhere where you see an asterisk those are possibly record tying or breaking high temperatures for tomorrow, so most of the state of pennsylvania doing just that, in the middle 80's. 80 in wilmington, 82 in dover and although beer not near records, in southern -- we're not near records southern areas pleasant with temperatures at least at that 80 he degree threshold much not only tomorrow are we tracking a record if we do break there tomorrow that was set back in 1908 for philadelphia. wednesday we should smash the old record of 80 degrees set back in 1947 and doing it again possibly on thursday, this time tying it at 80 from 1938. the seven-day forecast those changes will be common. as we take a look at the three days with possibly recordarmth t through thursday, again there's a little more cloud cover wednesday, thursday compared to today or tomorrow but by friday the front closes in, it's cooler, some sun with a scattered shower at 71 and then these winds will rush in behind this system that develops over new england. a lot of clouds, very chilly, windy saturday, struggling to get to 58 degrees for a high. and then staying a little below average sunday and monday despite some sunshine returns right around that 60-degree mark. so, you see 86, 85, 80 and then, bam,. >> off the cliff. >> 58 by saturday for a high. >> i'm just going to look at tuesday,
