"action news" reporter katherine scott live in our satellite center with the full story. katherine. >> reporter: matt this all starter on thursday afternoon. this family was stuck in the woods, it was freezing temperatures, they had no cell phone service so the mother decides to hike the nearest highway for help not realizing that the highway was closed for the winter. she was finally found early saturday morning. she's now suffering from frost bite. >> i knew she was alive. i had no doubt. >> reporter: lucky to be alive karen klein from palmer township is recovering in utah her husband, eric, by her side. the associate professor at northampton community college hiked for 26 miles for more than 30 hours in the snowy wilderness near the grand canyon to try to save her stranded family. >> my cousin needs his wife. i'm not letting my mother bury me. >> reporter: karen eric and their 10-year-old son decided to stop at the grand canyon while on vacation. they explained when a main road was closed their gps led them on back roads. when snow and ice made driving impossible they tried to turn around and their car went into a digit karen an experienced wilderness guide tide decided to hike to the nearest highway for help. >> by 6 o'clock we knew something was wrong. it wasn't like karen. >> reporter: when karen didn't return eric walked 7 miles until he had cell phone service and called 911. >> i just kept moving forward thinking if i don't get there, then, i can't -- i'm not going to survive another night out here and that really terrified me. >> reporter: karen had food and water when she starter but eventually ate twigs and drank urine to survive. gone for 36 hours rescue crews found her in a park ranger cabin near the entrance to grand canyon national park. >> i kept thinking this isn't how my life is supposed to end. >> reporter: eric and their 10-year-old son isaac were treated and released from the hospital for exposure and the whole family can't wait to get back to the lehigh valley. live from the satellite center katherine scott, channel6 "action news. nydia. >> what an incredible story katherine. thank you. two homes were damaged in a fire in chester county last night. it happened just before 7:30 in the unit block of oak mill drive. crews say the fire was reported on the first floor of one house and then spread to another. the fire was under control by 8 o'clock. no one was hurt. and we still don't know what caused it. several philadelphia car owners are dealing with a holiday headache after their tires quarterback slashed. investigators say the tires were slashed sometime between midnight and 2:30 sunday morning. it happened to nine vehicles in the 900 block of foulkrod street in northeast philadelphia. surveillance video from a nearby home shows a shadow whashadowyfigure possibly on a e moving from car to car. bob everett of two sons auto sal snatch southwest has offered to give the victims new tires free of charge. so first the holiday headache then a holiday gift. >> an 18-year-old under arrest in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in delaware on christmas eve. state police say bradford pollock struck and killed 54-year-old lisa bolden as she was crossing christiana road in new castle just before 8:00 saturday night. a tip call led police to the vehicle suspected in the incident. chevrolet impoliceman with front end damage. >> a large fight sparked panic inside a new jersey mall yesterday. it happened at the mills at jersey gardens in elizabeth. police originally were called for a report of a shooting inside the mall that investigators say the loud noise was a chair that was thrown during a fight in the food court. someone shouted gun which led to people running and crawling away from the scene. a couple people were injured as they tried to evacuate the mall. ahead on "action news" at 95::details on mall security issues across the country. >> the winter storm that swept through the great plains knocked out power leaving more than 19,000 customers in the dark and grounding flights. and across the country more than 3,000 flights were delayed and hundreds more canceled. and travelers may not be crash we're watching in chester delaware county along second street, 291 and this is the scene on the new jersey turnpike looking a whole lot better than it was last evening here close to the delaware memorial bridge toll plaza. we had big southbound delays last night heading into delaware. right now, though, volume is light and traffic is moving well. and for the most part we're back to normal
