WPVI Action News At 430 AM February 10, 2015

Maybe some streets affected by that as well. In fact side streets in my section of Delaware County were ice covered this morning. 28 degrees right now philadelphia. 29 in wilmington. 26 in allentown so everybody below freezing. There is a little bit of a wind out there as well. And as we head to school or the office youre looking at 28 by 8 oclock, 37 by noon and well probably get a high around 40 this afternoon so things are going to get better and we should start to see some melting in spots that are frozen this morning. Karen, what are roads looking like early on on your traffic cams . Im watching traffic here move just fine. I think people are slowing it down a little bit because of the ice thats out there. This is Norristown Montgomery county main street at mark lee street. Were watching for some slick spots. You can see some of the shine on the roadway, most of the roads that have been treated seem to be okay but expect it to be icy in some areas. As david said some of the worst parts may just be walking to your car because of the drive way and sidewalks and high to do some scraping there in south jersey with some of that ice. It looked like light rain and thats the real problem were finding. Big accident we have been talking about is on the new jersey turnpike and you can see the action cam live on the scene in cranbury township. This is an accident that happened about 9 oclock last night when we did have some freezing rain moving through that area. A multi vehicle pileup, a fatal accident scene. Look at the number of trucks and tractortrailers involved with this and although it happened at 9 oclock last night we still see crews on the scene at this point and theyre diverting traffic here on the new jersey turnpike. This is southbound near the Molly Pitcher service area. You want to be careful about this area southbound and expect those restrictions and theyre diverting everyone off onto route 18. This is only affecting you if youre in Middlesex County coming down on the turnpike. If youre headed northbound its no problem but i think just an example of what can happen with icy conditions out there. Another reason why youve got to slow it down. You could use route 1 southbound instead or 130 southbound. 295 northbound past 73, this is exit 36, weve got an accident here where a vehicle ran off the roadway. The right lane and shoulder blocked here so we are seeing some problems on the roads and expect it to be icy out there but take your time, matt and tam. Okay karen lets go back to that ugly scene on 95 in cranbury township. New jersey turnpike. At least one person is dead and dozens were injured in the massive wreck karen has been talking about. A number of cars, four tractortrailers, two box trucks and a fully loaded bus were all involved in these crashes in north jersey and cranbury township. Thats a live picture right there. It is still closed as karen has been telling you. Lets take a look at what the scene looked like last night. Smoke poured from the pileup as a wintry mix of rain and snow fell. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation but given the weather, that is among the suspected reasons. And now lets get a firsthand look at how the morning commute would look for you if youre heading out around now. Our Annie Mccormick is live in mobile6. Good morning. Reporter good morning, tam. Were about to get onto the blue route 476 south. So far we actually just left the pennsylvania turnpike where we were heading southbound and before that we came up 76 westbound up from city avenue. As you can see right there the person ahead of us is taking their time which is a good thing because penndot has restrictions theyre placing on the electronic signs that they have on the roadways saying for people to just slow down and take their time. At this point though, we are seeing wet roadways but were in the seeing slick roadways on this major roadways that we have been on again 76, the pennsylvania turnpike and now the blue route. One thing that we are definitely seeing, and you can actually see i think on the left there and hearing is the salt that is put down. Not only are we seeing the salt trucks actively still putting down salt, but as were driving walk hear a lot of that salt kicking up and hitting the bottom of our area which is a good thing because all these roadways you want to make sure theyre pretreated. At this time 4 30 in the morning were seeing a lot of trucks, a lot of penndot a few cars but again they want to put that salt down ahead of the morning rush. Thats what were seeing so far on the roadways. Well be back again in the next half hour in a different area to show was youre seeing for your morning commute. For now were live from mobile6, Annie Mccormick channel6 action news. Thanks annie. Philadelphia International Airport not seeing any problems here right now. In fact only three cancellations out of all the flights here today but if youre heading to Logan International up in boston, 53 cancellations are really getting hammered by more snow up there, theyre running out of places to put it. Also la guardia and newark, two airports in the new york city area do have some reported cancellations so the weather seems a little bit worse up there. Here at phl things are looking good. Be sure to take accuweather with you this morning by downloading our Storm Tracker 6 app. You can view live radar and also take a look at hourly temperatures all on the go. Now lets go on to some breaking news about a plane scare for passengers who were traveling from philadelphia down to texas. Now the video while here shows the dramatic exclusive footage just into action news, sparks fly when the pilot made an Emergency Landing in houston. Lets go over to action News Reporter erin ohearn shes live in the Satellite Center. Thats a frightening way to end a flight. Absolutely, matt and tam. Some incredibly frightening moments for the 52 passengers and four crew members aboard that American Airlines flight traveling from philadelphia to houston. It was expected to be about a threehour 42 minute flight but likely the last 45 seconds were the looks evident and most terrifying of that trip. Now lets take a look at that exclusive video we just saw on the video wall. You can see the exact moment that that plane made that belly landing and you can see the sparks flying from the body of the plane. Now, according to officials the pilot had to make that kind of landing. He had no choice because flight 1825 was descending just after 11 oclock and the nose gear did not deploy. Again, the plane had to make that Emergency Landing. You can see the sparks flying as the plane lands on its belly. Passengers will to exit the aircraft using aircraft slides. One of the passengers had to be taken to a local hospital but the injuries of some passenger are apparently not serious, which is good news according to an airline spokesperson. Lets look at a statement from American Airlines. It released this saying americans primary concern at this time is for our passengers and crew. We are in contact with authorities and cooperating with response efforts. Obviously now theyre likely cooperating with the ntsb which is investigating. Again, one Person Injured on that flight taken to a local hospital but is expected to be okay. Later in the morning, you are going to hear from a passenger who was on board that flight and of course if we have any new information on the investigation, well bring it to you right weigh. For now im live in the Satellite Center erin ohearn action news back to you. Great work for that pilot. Dave murphy accuweather. More sleet falling especially areas south of philadelphia. Take a look. Most of this is in wilmington or at least areas close to wilmington in New Castle County delaware and another batch farther to the south thats cruising through areas south of dover. Notice how cape may though, is getting some of this mixed precipitation and areas where you see the darker blue i think thats where the sleet is falling. The lighter blue is very likely just rain but of course with temperatures in the 20s at the surface were getting a new round of icing on untreated surfaces and 19 areas north of wilmington and in southeastern pennsylvania where theres nothing actively falling, you did have overnight sleet and ice and there is a new icy coating on many sidewalks side streets and perhaps on some areas of main roads where the salting from yesterday diminished a little bit. As we take a look outside, we have sky 6 looking at the airport. The ground looks wet there as im sure theyve been continuing to treat the air field but do be careful Walking Around this morning and also driving because there are some new icy patches that have developed. 26 in trenton, 28 in philadelphia right now, 29 in wilmington. Everybody cold. We have reached 30 down the shore and theres a bit of a wind blowing this morning thats driving those wind chills down into the teens. So other than being careful with the ice when youre walking and driving around you also want to dress warmly for that walk to the car, the bus stop or anywhere else you are outside. Most of our precipitation this morning is down to the south. Were just getting clipped for the next couple of hours with a little bitter of that mixed precipitation south of philadelphia. And areas farther to the north as i mentioned still looking at icy patches. Clouds mixing with some sun overall today in allentown though breezy and we will get above freezing in the Lehigh Valley with a high around 37 this afternoon. Down the shore clouds mixing with some sun as we go through the day, a high of 38 degrees so milder at the shore as well and in philadelphia were going to go for a high of 40 with a mix of clouds, some sun, milder. It will be rather breezy. Winds dropping down out of the north at 12 to 25 Miles Per Hour during the afternoon. As we roll through the day, still under the freezing mark by 8 oclock but by 11 oclock were up to 34. And theres that high at 2 oclock. I could see us kind of sitting there for a couple of hours. 40 degrees your high. And then back to 36 by 5 oclock. We do have a couple of more issues coming in the accuweather 7day forecast, though. A couple of shots of cold air on friday and sunday and thursday some snow showers could given us a small accumulation late in the day and at night and saturday afternoon and evening as you getting together with your lover on valentines day snuggle up cause its going to be cold and there may also be snow showers around. You want to keep your eyes on the forecast if you have plans to go out. Your exclusive accuweather 7day breezy and milder today a high of 40. Sun returning later. Increasing clouds. We kind of tint around with sun giving way to clouds on wednesday and a high of 39. Thursday afternoon and evening some snow showers are possible some small accumulations. Well keep our eyes on that. 38 degrees is the high there. On friday, windy and colder, 23 is all youll see and an overnight low of 11. On saturday we mentioned the afternoon snow showers with a high of 32 degrees. And then sunday windy and even more frigid with a high of 19 and overnight low of six. And it seems like weve had a lot of these cold shots this winter but this one could actually be the worst with that high of 19. On president s day windy and cold 28. 28 will feel balmy compared to 19. 19 i guess it will. Different way to look at it. Its 4 41. Much more is ahead on action news. Taking a live look at the ben franklin bridge. Heres one thing to remember when youre on bridges and overpasses, those areas can ice up quicker than the road surfaces because of that cold air beneath the bridges and overpasses. Lets go to karen for a look at traffic. And because of what matt mentioned we have speed restrictions on some of your area bridges. I had no problem coming over on them today but you need to be careful headed out. Here we are in Exton Chester county route 100 at Commerce Drive and we can see a light coating of snow and ice on some of the lanes here so be careful as youre traveling. Were going to see what it looks like in some of your area roads coming up. 4 44 and mobile6 traveling southbound on the blue route 476 and the good thing about these major highways, the more people travel on them, friction from the tires might break up any leftover precipitation thats on them. So, were thinking a lot of these places are looking good, but you just never know if you might come up on an icy spot. Karen you have been warning people even your own driveways, sidewalks, side streets you got to be really careful this morning. I think thats the worst of it actually like yesterday morning i think the sidewalks and your untreated driveways those are the areas that are being the most slick at this point. Lets take a lie look outside. This is the border of Montgomery County and bucks county looking on stump road at county line road and we can see kind of the ice patches on the roadway right here so you need to be careful as youre traveling. Im not watching people slipping and sliding but thats also because its 4 30 in the morning. Lets take another live look right now and this is the vine street expressway near broad street westbound traffic we see the cars moving there. Theyre not slipping or sliding. Your highways are mainly wet at this point. City streets will certainly have slick spots and youll need to be careful about that. I think just heading to your car may be the worst of it so you need to be careful and give yourself a lot of extra time. We had such a horrible accident last night when we were getting some of that freezing rain. This is up in Middlesex County, a multi vehicle pileup on the new jersey turnpike, a fatal accident scene. New jersey turnpike southbound at exit nine and thats where we still see crews out there at this point and so what theyve done is theyve allowed some traffic to get by southbound. The outer drive is still blocked between exit nine and exit eight but the inner drive, you know thats where they split it off for cars and trucks. Theyre still allowing traffic to get by at this point now so thats the update with this. If youre headed northbound if youre from philadelphia headed up north its not going to affect you just southbound. Just an example of what can happen with slick roads out there. Mount laurel 295 northbound past 73 a car slid off the road. Right lane and shoulder blocked there. Lets take a look at Storm Tracker 6 live double scan we can see the precipitation that we currently have, this area of blue icy here south of wilmington into southern new jersey as well as in cape may and approaching near dover but even where youre not seeing this airplay its still icy and thats because the freezing rain and drizzle that came through overnight matt. All right thanks, karen. Boston is buried under record breaking 5 feet of snow. Forecasters are predicting more snow for new england just as officials are trying to figure out where to dump the snow they already have. Some parts of that region had more than 2 feet of snow yesterday. Public schools in boston were closed yesterday and theyre closed again today. New here on action news, fire officials are investigating a barn fire in the Lehigh Valley. Flames were shooting from the dairy farm in Allen Township late into the night. Take a look at that video. Crews pulled about 40 cows out of the barn before any of the animals were injured. President obama is expected to ask congress for a vote to authorize military force against isis. The white house must deal with some Congressional Democrats who dont want another ground war. Republicans seem to want that option on the table. Now, the president has been considering sending arms to ukraine. Merkel staunchly opposes arming ukraines beleaguered military that is trying to fight russian backed separatists. Still ahead on action news. Frozen precipitation covered untreated roads in some areas also some sidewalks. This is a live look at philadelphia International Airport where david, all the flights look like theyre on time today. Good for travelers. Temperatures are in the upper 20s across the region so were dressing the kids with extra gear. Its a little breezy as well. This afternoon well get milder and above freezing so maybe they can go back on some of that gear. The new Winter Weather advisory has been extended until 8 oclock this morning because of earlier snow, ice and a little active sleet down in parts of the south. A lot of icy conditions out here this morning. Well be back with your temperature profile and your day planner forecast. Perdue. We believe in a better chicken.
