gas pumps. it came to a rest in the gas station parking lot at oxford and levitt. they had to halt the flow of gasoline as a precaution. emergency crews remain on the scene this morning to clean up the big mess. a family from the lehigh valley got stranded in the snow while on vacation in the grand canyon, they were finally rescued after a life-threatening ordeal. katherine scott shared their remarkable story of survival. >> this started on thursday afternoon for this family. the car was stuck and it was freezing cold, and no cell service, the mother a marathoner would hike to the nearest highway for help not reeling it was closed for the winter. she was not found until early contact morning and she is being treated for severe frostbite. >> i thought this is not how my life is suppose to end, no no no. >> karen pine is now recovering in utah, her husband eric by her side. the associate professor hiked for 26 miles for more than 30 hours in the snowy wilderness in the grand canyon to save her stranded family. >> my son needs his mother and his husband needs his wife. i'm not letting my mother bury me. >> karen, eric and their 10-year-old son were at bryce canyon on vacation and decided to head to the north rim of the grand canyon, when the main road was closed their gps led them to back roads. we thought this doesn't seem right but this is the way it's telling us to go and we are not from the area. >> when snow and ice made driving impossible they tried to turn around their car went into a ditch. karen with wilderness guide experience went to find help hoping a tow truck would be there in a few hours. >> by 6:00 we knew that something was wrong. >> by friday afternoon karen had not returned. eric walked 13 miles north until you found cell phone service and called 911. but the search continued for karen. >> i knew she was alive i had no doubt. >> she ate twigs to survive and hutled next to an evergreen the first night for warmth. she had no snow gear and pulled a muscle and hiked of the last four miles in the snow without a shoe. >> kept moving forward thinking if i don't get there, i'm not going to survive another night. gone for 36 hours, they found her at a park ranger cabin next to the grab canyon national park in the early morning hours of saturday morning. >> it was stay ago live not for me but for everyone else. >> eric and their 10-year-old son, isaac were treated and released from the hospital. the entire family is looking forward to returning home to the lehigh valley. katherine scott, channel 6 "action news." >> pretty remarkable. turning now to the forecast, rain off and on all morning and feeling much more like spring than winter today but the cold air will return soon enough. karen rogers is outside on the terrace with the latest from the accuweather forecast. >> it feels good out here too. it's breezy and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour at times right now. feels good a westerly wind and i see blue skies up above mixing with the clouds, lets look at stormtracker 6 live double scan we have a fair amount of rain through the morning commute, and storm tracker is pushing off the coastline, surf city and medford lakes and mays landing, the rain is move ougt on schedule and there say wider look at the front trying to limp off the coastline right now and how about the sunrise this morning. people said it looks like the sky was on fire here in williamstown, this is peter, he sent that beautiful shot. we saw that and a double rainbow, you can see that on my twitter page. looking at satellite 6 along with action radar, the clouds try to move out and to the west we see breaks out there. we'll see a bit more sunshine as the day wears on not full on but brighter out there. the big story is the mild flow of air. 63 in dover and atlantic city, 58 in wilmington and 56 in philadelphia and 59 in trenton and the lehigh valley, upper 50s. normally we'd be in the low 40s. the average high for this day is 42 and our high today is 62, near the record high of 65 and dropped back down tonight into the 30s and tomorrow is much cooler, a lot going on in the forecast. we'll take you through the up's and down's want to update you on a developing story we are following, officials confirmed a man died in a fire in concord township. on naaman's creek road. a man inside was killed in the fire. we'll follow this story on "action news" and at 6abc.com. a 4-year-old moment boy alerted his mom to a fire with the help of a phrase from a popular childrens movie. jason was in the kitchen with his brother brody when a pizza box on the stove went up in flames. she heard mason yelling fire in the hole, the phrase he saw in the movie alvin and the chipmunks. >> i saw smoke and then a fire and then a big fire. >> michelle was able to quickly put out the fire and mason was awarded with a special visit to the fire department. with new year's eve fast approaching there are new fears in the wake of the terror attack in berlin. 1 million people are expected to gather to watch the ball drop in times square. they say there is no specific threat but they are taking no chances. >> reporter: with new years eve just five days away, the nypd has begun ramping up security in times square, barricades and officers with tactical gear armed with rifles, from a security bulletin late last week, with homo fenders and home ground violent extremists targeting the event. and in the wake of the deadly truck attack in berlin that killed 12 and left dozens more injured. >> in light of what we experienced with this country and overseas, law enforcement has to take every situation seriously. according to the document, there is no specific incredible threat from the times square new year's eve celebration but the presence of a lot of spectators offering opportunities for a mass casualty event. close to a million revellers expected to countdown the new year and that means security is the top priority. >> people need to recognize the warning signs and behaviors that a person who is a threat exhibits and report those individuals to law enforcement. we are getting an up close look at the ball that drops here in skies are brightening and a gusty breeze at 30 miles per hour but not too bad. not too chilly. satellite 6 along with action radar showing the clouds have moved over us and we'll see peeks of sunshine mixing with the clouds. here is the actual cold front. behind it is cooler air. lets look at the temperature difference, ahead of the front you have the southwesterly flow and that allows the temperatures to bump up and 70 in jacksonville and 70 in new orleans and 56 in the city. you can see cooler air behind it, tomorrow we get back down to reality. enjoy the afternoon while you can. temperatures start to fall earlier than today with cool invecti invection, and 4:00, 53 and 6:00, 56 degrees and 10:00 we have clearing skies and 40 degrees, i want to jump ahead to thursday, we are tracking an area of low pressure that intensifies off the coast and creates a big snow storm for new england, for us it's mostly rain, maybe a little bit of snow in the lehigh valley at 1:30 on thursday but the actual high is 35 and we don't drop below freezing in the overnight. it looks like snow in the poconos. and wet snow or wintry mix in the lehigh valley will melt and rain for everybody else. you advance this and see it more clearly, rain for most everywhere. and snow for the poconos. that is thursday to watch. we have a tuesdays to fine tune that. breezy and mild and 62 and tomorrow back to reality and 43. thursday is the day we track rain for most of the region, wintry mix for the lehigh valley and snow for the poconos. 45, it looks like they will get a couple of inches and friday blustery and chilly and gusty winds at 40 miles per hour bringing in lake-effect too. saturday mostly sunny and now it looks like a high of 40 as you ring in the new year at night, you'll be in the mid-30s not too bad but lots of clouds, it looks like a shower at this point sunday morning not saturday night we'll watch that, a shower around and clouds for the mummers, 48
