that comey said that but it's true. it means comey chose to reveal the probe into clinton's e-mails but not possible links between the trump campaign and russian officials. glad i finally got that right. the comey testimony overshadowed the start of the confirmation hearings for supreme court nominee neil gorsuch. today was dedicated to statements by senators and by gorsuch himself. gorsuch tried to emphasize what he called the importance of an independent judiciary for in his words for neutral and independent judge to apply the law in the people's disputes. questioning from senators will begin tomorrow. world news tonight with david muir will have continuing coverage of both hearings today in washington. that is next at 6:30 right after "action news." the search is on for the bandits who broke into a philadelphia jewelry store and made off with $1 million in merchandise. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live on the 5500 block of whitaker avenue in lawncrest and bob, what's the full story here? >> reporter: well,? im, detectives say they have absolutely no doubt in their mind that whoever came here and did this was a team of professional thieves but before they went into this jewelry store they cut the wiring that means the internet, the phones most importantly the security system. they were all down. behind me here where it happened, kim thanh's jewelry. they are out a million dollars. it was a million dollar jewelry heist. carried out by an experienced team of criminals, the target the kim thanh jewelry store on whitaker avenue in lawncrest. >> they're going through the wall, they're using tools. >> reporter: investigators say the thieves climbed up the ladder in the back destroying the wiring box as a result the phones, the internet, the security system. they were all taken down. we spoke with kim thanh who runs a tax business next door. they cut the phone and power line. >> every phone line. >> reporter: so you can't make any calls, you can't do any business out of your tax business. >> yeah, no phone, no internet. >> reporter: to get into thanh's the crooks cut a hole in the roof of the bamboo drink and desert shop next door. you can see where they went in from from this footage from chopper6. police say they smashed their way into the jewelry store through the wall and then smashed open the safe. inside it precious jewels again worth a million dollars. we spoke with the owner of kim's briefly as you can imagine she's devastated. >> you said your whole life is in this business? >> yeah. everything important is here, you know. >> reporter: investigators also tell us this is the second time the jewelry store has been broken into in two months and they say it likely couldn'would have been avoided. detectives say the thieves likely waited to see if officers showed up and when they didn't they ransacked the to are. >> they were alerted through the night that the alarms were going off but they did not send the police out. they sent a family member over and he drove over to check on the place and it seemed secure so they thought something was wrong with the alarm system. >> reporter: now, detectives say they hope this can serve as an unfortunate reminder for all local businesses that if your security systems are tripped that you give the police a call so they can look into things. it's better to be safe than sorry. reporting live in lawncrest bob brooks channel6 "action news." jim. >> bob, thank you. a philadelphia police officer was knocked unconscious this morning after al confrontation with a teenaged suspect in northeast philadelphia. the officer responded to the 12,000 block of academy road at 4:00 a.m. for reports of a man walking around with a gun. >> suspect violently struggled with the officer and was able to actually pick the officer up off the ground and slam his body. >> the officer's head hit the ground. he was knocked unconscious. police found the 17-year-old minutes later, about 20 minutes later. police are now investigating whether the suspect is behind an armed robbery yesterday morning at a nearby 7-eleven. they say he matches the description of a male in his teens wearing braces. we have al tragic update to the story of a five-year-old bucks county boy who was and foun found face dowe snow last week. warrington police say the boy died over the weekend. investigators say it was a bizarre accident. the fall dog strangled the youngster while they were playing in the backyard. the dog tugged on the boy's scarf until he lost consciousness. the rural community of shoe makersville in berks county was the scene of murder-suicide early this morning. and police have a pretty good idea what happened. "action news" reporter walter perez is live at fourth and chestnut street with the full story. walter. >> reporter: well, jim, a lot more questions than answers so far in this case. but police do know they found a woman dead behind this home in shoe makersville. then they found a man dead in this home about a half a block ay what. it was a murder-suicide but apart from that it's anyone's guess at what happened early this morning in this quiet tiny town in bucks county. charity was getting ready for bed after working the late shift at her job. it was 1 o'clock in the morning when she heard someone banging on her front door. that person was carol zimmerman who groff says she had only met a few times before. >> she said please help me and she came to my door and she banged on it and i told her i was going to call 911u groff did call 911 and just as the dispatcher was instructing her not to open the door so to protect herself and her family groff says she heard something terrifying in her backyard. >> i was in the living room at this time and i heard a gunshot go off. >> reporter: state police quickly arrived to find zimmerman had been shot to death. as authorities began scouring the neighborhood, they found this homeless than a block ay what. the lights were on and the front door was opened. inside they found 61-year-old gary mauer dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound. now the only known link between the victim and alleged shooter is that zimmerman was a family friend helping mauer sort that was personal and financial issues involving mauer's mother who died about two weeks ago. since the only two people who know the full story are dead, police say they may never know the motive behind this apparent murder-suicide. >> unless somebody that knows something that we don't know yet, somebody we didn't talk to comes forward and tells us the rest of the story, we don't really know. >> reporter: now police say gary hour did have a few dui's on his record but nothing violent. once again as of right now the motive behind this case remains unknown. reporting live from shoe makersville, walter perez channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you walter. former penn state president graham spanier had nothing to say this morning as he walked into a harrisburg courtroom for jury selection. the 68-year-old faces two counts of endangering the welfare of children and one count of conspiracy. all in connection with the jerry sandusky scandal. gary schultz and tim curly who struck plea deals last week are expected to testify in the spanier case. prosecutors say those two are on their witness list. the wilmington fire department put their training to work today to rescue a 14-year-old boy from the brandywine creek. crews lowered ropes and hooked the boy into a harness to lift him up. the fire department responded to the calls that someone had jumped from the market street bridge at 7:30 this morning. when first responders got there, the boy was sitting in a drainage tube. he wasn't hurt but was taken to a.i. dupont hospital for children as a precaution. drivers who use the e-z pass express lanes at the pennsylvania turnpike mid-county toll plaza will have to use the normal e-z pass lanes for the next couple of weeks. the express lanes are closed as workers install upgrades to the electronic toll equipment. the construction is expected to last through april 10th. drone6 is showing you the scene along that section of the turnpike in plymouth meeting tonight. we now have a team of "action news" staff who are faa certified drone pilots. each has completed extensive safety and flight training, all required by both the government and abc news, our network. a new bill in delaware honors three wilmington firefighters. the families of lieutenant jerry thicks captain christopher leach and lieutenant ardythe hope. wilmington city firefighters are excluded from receiving funeral expenses from the state but this new bill changes all that and makes them eligible. coming up on "action news" tonight, special delivery. a haverford township family thanks the first responders who helped bring their new baby into the world. and reaction today from the villanova wildcats days after their early exit from the ncaa tournament. cecily. >> decent amount of sunshine on this first day of spring. a seasonable 54 degrees but i'm tracking the return of wintry wind chills and then a big recovery by the weekend in the accuweather 7-day forecast. >> those stories and much more when "action news" continues tonight. >> ♪ hey, neighbor. well, if it isn't the second most famous groundhog in pennsylvania. wow, you were some athlete. back in the day, g. well, you can still go for gold... ahh, million dollar gold rush, the new instant game from the pennsylvania lottery. with top prizes of a million dollars. see, you still got game, dwayne. i got instant game, gus. instant game. (giggles) keep on scratchin'. >> drexel university school of education received a big financial boost today. president john fry was on hand to accept a grant for $1,200,000 on behalf of the philadelphia school partnership program. it will allow undergrads to get certified to teach middle school math and science in the city while being trained for the unique challenges and opportunities in the urban classroom. the program will graduate 40 teachers a year. an effort is under way to make philadelphia public schools more energy efficient. city council members and the school district announced the pilot program at lankenau high school in roxborough today. superintendent william hite was there. this is just one of three schools where energy efficiency programs have been paid for through cost savings. it is not nice they say to fool mother nature but she apparently has the right to fool us. it certainly doesn't feel like it but today is in fact the first day of spring. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic tells the story. >> reporter: the first day of spring is a little unusual this year. the flowers are on their way but in some places they're covered in snow and that does not conjure up thoughts of spring. >> it is cold and it does not feel like spring but it should be spring because it says it's spring but it's not spring. >> it doesn't really feel like spring. i mean its a little cold. still feels like winter. >> one day you're walking around with shorts and then you got to grab your heavy coat. >> reporter: who wants to sit on a snowy bench or picnic in a frozen park? [laughter] >> accuweather -- it does not feel like the first day of spring. >> it was 54 degrees today which is the a of rap high for march 20th. >> in fact in reality it does feel like the first day of spring. >> saturday is going to be 70's but wednesday wind chills in the 20's, so some wild swings this week. he's not even listening to me. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we have rain free conditions on this first day of spring so we are live on sky6 taking a look now that we're in spring maybe a lot of people thinking about the shore. we're live in atlantic city where not a lot of people on the beach but a few people walking the boards on this first evening of spring and seeing some sunshine there. so, the accuweather highlights will show you that, yes, our days are getting longer. tonight the sun will be setting at 7:13 and in one month 7:44, in two months the sun will be setting at 8:14 but don't pack away the winter coats just yet. this is future tracker that shows wednesday afternoon we're looking at wind chills in the 20's and teens and thursday morning is going to be bitter cold. so, right now not too bad out there. seasonable. 54 degrees. 52 degrees currently in philadelphia down from our high of 54. allentown 47. wilmington 50. trenton 50. atlantic city airport currently 55. satellite and radar showing we started the day with bright sunshine, blue skies. we're getting high clouds around. breaks in the clouds especially across south jersey. some of the showers out to the west should be diving down to the south and mittsing us for the most part. tonight lots of clouds, can't rule out a spotty shower. i think most areas will be dry and with the cloud cover temperatures will be above freezing. don't have to worry about that refreeze overnight. philadelphia 38, allentown 33, cape may 38 and trenton 35 degrees. tomorrow we start the day with lots of clouds but by midafternoon, the clouds will be breaking. temperatures in the 40's early but we should manage to make it up into the upper 50's by late in the afternoon. so 59 degrees the high tomorrow. that's 5 degrees above normal. but then tomorrow night an arctic front rolls through, it comes through dry but behind it is when not only is it a lot colder on wednesday, it will be very windy. the high struggling to hit 40 most of the day temperatures stuck in the 30's. you factor in those winds out of the northwest up to about 25 miles per hour. wind chills will be in the 20's. thursday not quite as cool but temperatures still below normal. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, clouds in the morning, sunshine by the afternoon. the afternoon high pretty nice. 59 degrees but then we get that temperature whiplash on wednesday. sunny, windy and cold, 40 degrees the high. wind chills in the 20's. thursday morning wind chills in the teens. friday afternoon the winds relax somewhat but still chilly, 45 degrees. friday it's milder with an afternoon shower, 55 degrees. and here we go. you want that spring warmth. it here on saturday. winds out of the south will pull up temperatures up to about 70 degrees. it comes at a cost. it won't be a bright and sunny day. we'll have a lot of high thin clouds but definitely the better of the two days this weekend. on sunday it's much cooler, 53 degrees, clouds reaso and ran arriving. monday lingering rain and a high of only 47 degrees. i always say springlike weather it's like knocking over a fridge. you got to rock it back and forth for awhile before it finally tips over and that's what we're doing. >> all right. keep rocking. >> all right. >> haverford township couple thanked the first responders who delivered their son. the paolone family stopped by the narberth ambulance station with a you believe can of pizzas today. on march ninth summer's water broke she called her husband fran who called 911. minutes after he arrived home e some. s crews arrived and delivered baby halstead. haverford township ems director jim mccann was there. he cut the cord. he said it was a very uplifting experience and today he got to make a new friend. abc's "world news tonight" with david muir is next on channel6.
