[laughter] >> get off of my phone. and she said i'm not. it's may. it's may. >> reporter: the family only buys a ticket when the jackpot gets big. they pool their money and selected the cash option which comes to $244 million. >> it was a big shock when we first learned that we were powerball oners. it was a bigger shock when we learned that we were the only ticket holder. >> reporter: the family hired legal counsel to help them figure out thousand handle so much money. steven smith says he won't get too extravagant. >> i have a family. i'm planning for my family. it's not about flashy clothes and cars. >> reporter: the family says their new found fortune will allow them to pay for some of the projects they've always dreamed of funding by katherine's mentoring program for teen girls but they don't want to be pressured. >> don't come, you know. we get to choose and we will choose and we are very good at saying no. >> reporter: the family has had a lot to deal with the last few days. in fact, the news conference today had to be delayed for a couple of minutes because one of the sisters actually fainted right before they were supposed to come out before the cameras. i'm happy to report she's doing just fine. live in lawrenceville, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news. >> thank you nora. delaware state fire marshal says a woman who was using oxygen while smoking sparked this fire in bear. emergency officials responded to the 500 block of vincent lane at 8:49 this morning. the 60-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation. she was taken to christiana hospital in critical condition. it was a case of mistaken identity in the somerton section of philadelphia overnight. but it's a tough deal when the mistake results in a home invasion. that's exactly what happened in the 14,000 block of faraday street and that's where "action news" reporter trish hartman is live tonight. trish, it sounds like one horrifying ordeal. >> reporter: jim it really was. we spoke to that couple today who say they thought the intruders were going to kill them. now that couple and their son was not hurt but they are anxious for police to find out who tied them up and ransacked their home. >> scared to death. and i thought this guy will a gunpointd at me. i said, you know, what's going on? i ain't got nothing to give you. >> reporter: it was a terrifying night for the couple who lifts here on the 14,000 block of faraday street. three men woke them up and bound their hands with zip ties demanding money. >> whole time the guy was standing there with his hand right at my face and he had it covered and, you know, i can only believe it was a weapon there. the couple's 37-year-old son was tied up, too. after pulling cushions from couches and chairs, the victims say they heard one man say to the others, this is the wrong house. the men did take some cash from the son's wallet before leaving and they thought their cat princess wandered out during the mayhem. >> we came downstairs about 1:20. the doors were opened, left opened and they remained opened until the detectives so they were open about four hours. >> reporter: princess was found safe and sound about 12 hours later. detectives investigated throughout the morning and returned in the afternoon responding to a home two doors down from the break in. police haven't said how or if that home is related. neighbors say this is normally a very safe block there a number of philadelphia cops call home. >> this is the first time anything happened like that here. >> have a lot of young kids, you know, they come home from school and now everybody's on pretty much high alert right now, so, yeah, it's very scary. >> reporter: now, the victims were obviously shaken up but they are thankful to be alive. they will be taking extra security measures around their home and they're hoping some of the surveillance cameras in the neighborhood possibly caught them. it would be useful. if you have any information you should be contact philadelphia police. we're live in somerton, trish hartman channel6 "action news. jim. >> thank you, trish. a lehigh county judge will decide if former wrestler jimmy super fly fluke today is mentally competent to stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend nearly three decades ago. a psychologist testified today that snuka suffered so many blows to the head that he suffers from dementia. in 1983 snuka told police he found nancy argentino unresponsive in the bed of their hotel room in whitehall township. she died a few hours later. the case was reopened in 2013. "action news" has learned that there is a tentative agreement to spare atlantic city from financial collapse. the proposal would give atlantic city meters 150 days -- leaders 150 days to come up way plan to cut spending in half before the state steps in to take over. formal bill has not yet been introduced. atlantic city s is more than $550 million in debt. a list of co-conspirators who were not indicted in the new jersey bridgegate scandal will remain private at least for now. a federal judge had ordered the names released by noon today but she delayed the deadline until next tuesday. it seems there a person on the list is fighting to keep it sealed. we're showing you chris christie. we have no idea if he is on the list. two former allies of governor christie face criminal charges for allegedly creating traffic jams at the george washington bridge for political revenge. a third has pleaded guilty. this is a sad day for the temple university community. its former president, peter liacouras has died. he passed away yesterday after a long illness. he was 85. tonight vernon odom looks at the liacouras era on north broad street. >> he put temple university literally on the map as a destination. >> reporter: from student entries liacouras chose the now iconic big t which became the university's insignia worldwide. dating back to the early 70's when he headed up the law school through his 18 years as president, peter liacouras was the heart and soul of this school's transition from a local commuter school to a research institution with international reach. encouraging sports and culture to make temple a center for the entire community. that was the genesis of the liacouras center on broad street. >> he will the idea that if you bring people to main campus, then temple university will sell itself, temple academics will sell themselves. >> reporter: as the student body grew by leaps and bounds, becoming more diverse peter liacouras led the way from the president's perch but first as a law school professor. >> we marched together the moratorium against vietnam and he was threatened by the dean at that time that if he marched he would be in trouble. he marched anyway. peter loved a great controversy. >> reporter: liacouras hired the legendary basketball coach john cheney making him one of the first african-americans to coach at a major university. aaron mckie was one of cheney's most successful players an favorite of the president. >> law a wonderful man. he was a wonderful ambassador for temple university. >> reporter: for many generations to come and perhaps a century peter liacouras will be remembered at the school as a towering figure in its growth and development. and peter liacouras became one of this town's most prominent citizens as it barreled towards the 21st century. on temple university's campus on north broad, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news. >> well, this is graduation day at lincoln university in delaware county. the rain forced the ceremony into the school's gym but it didn't dampen the joy that these students felt as they received their degrees today. family and friends packed the stands to clear them on. this is the school's 157th commencement. and it was a day for new beginnings in west philadelphia today. 60 new citizens took the oath of allegiance during naturalization ceremonies at the u.s. citizenship and immigration services office. today's ceremony part of a celebration of asian-american and pacific islander heritage month but the candidates today came from far and wide, 33 nations represented today. coming up on "action news" tonight, there is plenty of wildlife to be seen in wissahickon valley park but this guy caused quite a stir today. we'll hear from the "action news" continues tonight. >> ♪ >> whoa. >> there was a close call for a police officer in south jersey. the linwood officer's body camera caught the scary moment as a hit-and-run driver sideswiped his cruiser. the officer was getting out to help a disabled car on new road near sea view avenue at 8:48 wednesday night. police describe the striking vehicle as a silver or gray fleecnissan altima or similar te car. people in wissahickon valley park along forbidden drive near valley green inn are being advised to use caution. on the other hand officials are saying this is a rare and wonderful wildlife sighting. a black bear was spotted in the area this morning and that has gotten a lot of people's attention. "action news" reporter gray hall has the story. >> reporter: it is a rare sight, a black bear in the city of philadelphia. friends of wissahickon snapped these image of the animal in wissahickon valley park friday morning. josh carson says he came face to face with the wild animal while he was out fishing. >> my first thought was is this real? you had o to pinch yourself twice. >> reporter: after he realized this was not a dream he said he made sure he had an exit strategy and then pulled out his phone and snapped pictures all at a safe distance of course. >> it's still a scary thing. if you're out there alone and you see a bear. >> reporter: wildlife employees urge park goers to use caution when hiking and warn people to keep their dogs leashed. there were reports of the bear what happening in wissahickon valley park. all encounters appeared to be harmless. >> if it came near me i would have been up to my waist in the water. >> reporter: wildlife officers say black bears are usually not aggressive. >> if they're cornered or messed with then they could turn on you. >> reporter: officials say this bear is probably looking for a mate and some new territory and just wandered too far. game commission officer jerry check says in his 17 year career, this is the second report of a black bear in philadelphia. >> when people get attacked it's if they come between the mother and cubs or people are sleeping in their tents and they have food in the tender the bear goes up to the tent and wants the food not the person. >> reporter: wildlife officials say that if you are ever approached by a wild bear out in the woods, what you want to do is raise your arms appear bigger than an animal and make lots of noise in hopes of scaring it away. as for this particular wild black bear officials say they hope to track it down, tranquilize it and then move to it a safer place out in the wild. in wissahickon, valley park, gray hall channel6 "action news. >> you know it's just a year ago when the media was keeping track of every move that sam bradford was making. what a difference a year makes. >> in this town you turn quarterbacks over year after yearly he's been on the field one day and only question everyone wants to know is when will carson wentz be named eagles starting quarterback. he has to get nfl ready. that process began today with the opening of eagles rookie mini camp. when it can comes to the question whether or not he will start right away or next season, we will see. but wentz saying all the right things when it can comes to that. he'll be happy being the third stringer or the starter as long as he can help this team win. take a look at wentz all smiles today as he takes the field in an eagles jersey for the very first time. owner jeffrey lurie was out here watching his every move. all eyes on the second overall pick in the future franchise quarterback. for now, sam bradford is the starter and even though he's disgruntled and wentz says he doesn't think there will be an issue between the two when they finally meet and talk next week. >> i think the relationship with him and really other quarterbacks it will be great. i think it will be a competitive atmosphere. hopefully we'll all learn together and grow together and really push each other and ultimately lead to benefiting the team and winning a lot of ball games. personally i don't think there will be a lot of attention. i think the coaches and everybody will be on the same page. i think it will be a really if working relationship for that sure. >> reporter: wentz has only had the playbook for a week and a half but he says he already loves it because it's quarterback friendly. so when will eagles fans get to see wentz execute the playbook on the field? he could sit all of this upcoming season. firms he has to learn the playbook. >> you got to earn it. you know, you got to earn it with hard work, got to earn it with building relationships being around the guys. it doesn't happen overnight. nothing is handed to you here. you have to come in and earn the respect of everybody and i'm looking forward to doing that. >> reporter: and wentz has been in this taking a look at the center city skyline and getting good amount of sunshine to enjoy before the sun sets at 8:08 tonight. and temperatures show you that where we saw the sunshine first the temperatures a lot warmer. reading and lancaster 73 degrees. philadelphia 68. and where we had the showers hanging on the longest right along the coast it is cooler. the boardwalk in atlantic city 63 and cape may currently 61 degrees. so satellite6 along with action radar is showing the first cold front has now left the region. we've got clearing skies behind it but ther that next cod front will be aiming in late in the day tomorrow and tomorrow evening. that will not only bring us storms but also usher in much cooler air for the second half of the week. that being said, most of saturday will be fine. future tracker showing 10 o'clock tomorrow morning we've got loads of sunshine. the clouds roll in around lunchtime and then looks like these storms will come in waves. around 3 o'clock a cluster of some showers and thunderstorms across the northwest suburbs. they kind of evaporate before the main line rolls in around 6:30 and they could be pretty intense hitting the coast by about 8:30 and then the skies will begin to break but late in the afternoon, early in the evening some of these storms could be very strong. looking at the potential for wind gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour, dangerous lightning, could have small hail and there could be isolated severe weather so severe thunderstorm warnings are possible late in the day tomorrow and tomorrow evening. sunday the sunshine is back especially the first half of the day. a few clouds bubbling up in the afternoon. it's not going to feel like may. we get that classic wind tunnel effect so wind gusts up to about 35 miles per hour out of the northwest so the high on sunday only 59 degrees. that's 15 degrees below average. and it will feel closer to 50 degrees when you factor in the winds. so, race weekend in dover.
