We are entering the final weekend before the iowa caucuses. The first electoral event in the 2016 president ial campaign. And the eyes of the political world are firmly trained on the state of iowa. Rick williams is live in des moines tonight. Rick, one thing ive always found fascinating there is so much importance given to iowa yet the state in no way is typical of the country as a whole. Reporter well, jim youre absolutely right. Iowa does not represent a Cross Section of the community or of the country both demographically or politically. It is not as diverse as people might think but that doesnt seem to matter to the candidates or to the media. One other thing the doesnt seem to matter as much as many people might think is who will finish first monday night. Hello. Wow. Clear cheer. This is the first time real people are actually going cast real votes. Come on. Reporter and thats villanova professor matt kerbel says what makes iowa so important. Its first. Thank you very much. Reporter we are finally going see what actual voters think. But iowa is not actually a great example of what voters nationwide are thinking. Demographically it doesnt match the entire population and that has shown in past caucuses. Iowa has historically been bad in predicting the eventual nominee. The reason its so important is because of its position on the calendar, it comes first so this is really the first test for these candidates. Reporter in truth, winning is not everything here in iowa. Just ask Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee the last two republican winner. We love this state always have and always will. The key he in iowa isnt necessarily winning unless youre expected to win. The key is to do better than what youre expected to do. Reporter a poor showing here can lead to a loss of support. Its likely that for some of the candidates especially in the larger republican field, this will be the beginning of the end. Want to look to see what happens with the candidates that finish seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth. Its possible those candidates may fall by the way side. Reporter and were back live in des moines the latest polls jim are showing that both races democrat and republican are too tight to call fars as far as the iowa caucus is concerned. The idea is not necessarily to come in first but to surpass expectations. Can coming up at 11 00 well hear from iowans voters who cant wait to finally have their say in this president ial race. Well see you at 11 00. Jim, back to you. Rick williams reporting from des moines. Thank you, rick. The state of delaware has a new Family Court Commissioner tonight.
