and are moving down different parts of center city and trying to get on the interstate, at one point police marked the entrance to the schuylkill expressway. ferguson is the underlying tonight but the demonstration sparked again because of a new york grand jury decision not to indict the police officer for a chokehold that killed eric garner, he was stopped for selling loose cigarettes and the officer is cleared after his lawyers said he used a take down moved taught to him by the department. but they are pledging to speak out against what they call racist policing. we don't know how long story on the air and online at 6abc.com. >> the search resumed today for missing college student shane montgomery in manayunk, police were out with sniffing dogs and volunteers were going around the neighborhood posting flyers in a desperate attempt to locate the 21-year-old after disappearing after leaving a bar on thursday. meanwhile, sara bloomquist is live on the campus of westchester university where montgomery was a student. what is happening there? >> a vigil is just getting underway here on the steps of westchester university. they are playing music, upbeat music with the theme of coming home. close friends and family are here for the vigil, it's another long and agonizing day for them. they spent much of it in the rain in manayunk doing all they can to bring shane home. volunteers went up and down manayunk putting up pictures of the information. they say that the reward now stands at $31,000 for information leading to his whereabouts. >> it's a week now and people are repeating the most insignificant information matters, but nobody has come forward and it's not right. >> the rectory at st. john the baptist is the center for the action. his mother is there trying to stay optimistic while the search for her son going on. >> it's hard, i think i go to bed and try to get fitful rest and then it's a nightmare i can't wake up from. >> montgomery disappeared after leaving kildare's irish pub at closing time at 2:30 a.m. today philadelphia police brought nay k-9 unit to search the banks by the schuylkill river and the small manayunk park but again today. nothing. >> they assure me, and i believe them, they are doing everything possible, and they assured me i will be the first to know if they find anything of value. >> the volunteers have left manayunk and made the trip to westchester to pray. >> it's hard to go to classes and be normal. we have a ton of hope and we are trying to spread it tonight. >> as we look back live at westchester university and the steps of the student union where the group is gathering here and any moment now they will begin a candle light vigil in shane montgomery's honor and they will pray tomorrow and they pledge to that broke a teenager's jaw during a beating in kensington in philadelphia. employee men ambushed the 17-year-old on the 900 block of 4th street on november 16th, the victim had just left a friend's house when he was punched and kicked repeatedly, he was taken to the hospital. and police don't have a description of the attacker orz a possible motive. >> retired camden city fire cheech was hurt today during a fire at his home and his stepson was badly burned. investigators think that the fire started in the house in the basement in mount ephraim, they learned that he suffered smoke inhalation and his stepson was air lifted in critical condition. and now police are trying to track down the driver from the hit and run accident in north philadelphia, meanwhile we are learning more about the victim in that crash, david henry is live at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania where the victim is in critical condition. >> jim, we have learned that the victim is a 30-year-old father of two and he is deaf and he remains in critical condition here at the hospital and the police continue to close in on the hit and run driver. >> byron scales was crossing the intersection of 59th and market when was rundown, this surveillance video obtained by "action news" shows the moment of impact. the police knew immediately the car was a silver volvo station wagon because a police patrol tried to stop the car for no taillights a block earlier, and then they followed and then disengaged for safety they saw the car from a block away and the patrol car was on the scene seconds later and the two police officers rushed the victim to the hospital, last night police got a tip call and found this car on the 800 block of south cecil street, it has a shattered windshield and police believe it's the hit and run car. they believe it belongs to a woman that lets her son and daughter drive it. they are trying to determine who was driving it at the time of the accident. byron scales has to daughters and he is deaf. he never heard the car bearing down on him as he crossed the intersection, he was thrown into the air and suffered massive head and chest trauma. scales remained in critical condition here at the hospital and the police continue their investigation and so far they have not filed any charges. live in university city, david henry channel rose's restaurant can get vaccinated tomorrow. hamilton township officials are offering the shot to residents that ate there between november 10th and 26th. the clinic runs from 2:00 until 8:00 at the live to rick williams live at the city hall courtyard where the group of protesters have gathered at the city's christmas tree. what is the story there? >> reporter: well, jim i don't know if this was the type of excitement they were preparing when they planned this tree lighting ceremony at city hall and this is what they got. hundreds of protesters have descended on the courtyard of city hall, they came in rushing in and chanting. no justice, no peace, many of them with signs held high and it has presented an interesting contrast because on the stage in front of me there are performers singing christmas carols and preparing for the tree lighting celebration tonight. they are surrounded by a sea of protesters, they are chanting with their arms held high and signs held high. there are many police officers on stand by and i am told that if anyone gets unruly or if the situation becomes turbulent, people will be removed from the tree lighting celebration, it's an interesting
