WPVI Action News 630 AM April 28, 2015

Around both days. Ill have details on that coming up in the exclusive accuweather 7day. For now matt war roads looking like. Kind of a predictable Tuesday Morning on the roadway. Were okay with that, though but the predictions are always that things are going to be very slow on 95 southbound david and indeed they are. As we look live entering the work zone at cottman were jammed from academy into cottman. Again the betsy ross bridge into girard. That travel time 20 minutes more than what it would be ideally to get if woodhaven into the vine street expressway in center city. But if youre headed toward 95 on the vine street expressway that broken down vehicle that i told you about a bit ago is now gone. However, still some fire activity in West Philadelphia along catherine street at cobbs creek parkway. It was a corner bar fire overnight. Sixtysecond street might be a better bet than katherine for you in the neighborhood this morning. And if youre out and about in east falls right by Philadelphia University watch out for more work today along schoolhouse lane by henry avenue. That was kind of a mess yesterday. Speaking of messes from yesterday, theyre still cleaning up from the big tractortrailer accident and fire in lower providence but the chunk of south park avenue thats blocked keeps shrinking. An updating from lower providence is now its been eagleville and job roads. To get around that use eagle road trooper road or sunny side avenue as some alternates. Earlier crash on 422 eastbound this matt and tam is just normal morning volume. Okay, thanks matt. Breaking right now chaos continues in parts of the city of baltimore. Rioters have set police cars on fire and torched several buildings. Schools are closed dan residents are being told to stay in place. Stay in your home until officials can somehow get a handle on this situation. Action News Reporter erin ohearn picks up our coverage at the big board. Erin i think people still in shock from the images theyve seen. Reporter parts of baltimore are a war zone. This is Video Showing Police in riot gear trying to get protesters off the street and you can see the fires burning behind them. We also have this video its a riteaid engulfed in flames one of several businesses that was torched. And its one of several fires burning across baltimore. 15 officers were hurt in the riots and more than two dozen people have been arrested. Now, as we mentioned the governor of maryland has declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard but there are still pockets of unrest in the city that has been overtaken by what mayor Stephanie Rawlings blake calls thugs. The violence started shortly after high school let out and young people began looting a local mall and liquor store. I want the you to take a look at some video right here because the Police Commissioner referred to it in the press Conference Much this is a mother who confronted her son and confronted him rather aggressively when she realized his intention to join these extraordinarily violent riots. She herself is trying to physically remove him from the scene yelling at him to go home. Now the commissioner commended her for her efforts. While the mayor explained why controlling this situation has been so difficult and Community Leaders emphasized that these riots are discrediting what was intended to be a Peaceful Movement and the riots are disrespecting the family of freddie gray. We saw on one scene you have one mother who grabbed her child who had a hood on his head and she started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed. I wish i had more parents that took charge of their kids out there tonight. It is a very delicate balancing act to make sure that you protect peoples right to free speech. Their right to protest. The fact that people exploited the opportunity to protest with violence and looting doesnt mean that i dont have a duty to protect peoples right to be heard. The family was very clear that this was a day of sacred closure in the funeral so for us to come out of the burial and walk into this is absolutely inexcusable. Reverend bryant said these young people in particular need to refocus on what this movement is supposed to be about. Now, from 10 00 p. M. To 5 00 a. M. A curfew begins tonight. All Public Schools have closed today. Of course were going to keep you updated on this story throughout our newscast and of course on 6abc. Com. Tam. Okay, thank you, erin. Our coverage of the baltimore riots continues on 6abc. Com. And our own Kenneth Moton is also there in maryland. Look for his reports later today on action news. 6 35 now and developing the search for the gunman who shot up four cars in a West Philadelphia street. Action News Reporter Katherine Scott is live where it happened at 60th and trevor son streets. Katherine. Reporter matt, no one was injured in all of this but four cars were damaged and were hearing that one home was hit by a bullet as well and you can see that police were on the scene this morning or actually just wrapping up driving away right now. Theyve been on the scene investigating this. The scene was taped off overnight to preserve the evidence. The detectives wanted to come back when it was daylight so they could take a better look at what happened here last night. This happened around 11 oclock along West Jefferson street near 60th in West Philadelphia. Police believe the shooter may have been targeting a house on the block. At least four cars were hit. You can see broken glass in the street from the shattered windows. Another bullet is lodged in one home. The scene was taped off overnight and so far theres no word if theres any surveillance cameras on any of these houses that could help with this investigation. They just opened up the road just while we were on air, the police cars drove away. The tape has been wrapped up so you can get through jefferson by 60th now but again this remains under investigation. If you have any tips, southwest detectives want to hear from you. Were live in West Philadelphia, Katherine Scott, channel6 action news. Thanks katherine. Also developing, the action cam was in Oxford Circle as Philadelphia Police recovered a knife that they say was used in an overnight stabbing. They found it on the 6100 block of castor avenue. The attack happened on the 1400 block of steven street about a block away. Police say someone slashed a man with a 7inch blade during a fight, then they say the attacker actually drove the victim to the hospital where officers arrested him. The victim is in critical condition. The number of those confirmed dead in saturdays earthquake in nepal now exceeds 4400. A Montgomery County couple is relieved that their family members survived the disaster. The rogers Adult Children kent and nadine left the comforts of hatboro and moved to nepal. They care for orphans as part of the nonprofit losing arms mission. When the quake struck this past weekend the parents ran to their computer and found a Facebook Post saying their children were safe. So relieved. I feel blessed to have been spared the agony of not knowing. They dont have a plan right now. They are just living under tarps. With aftershocks still occurring, its understandable why people are outside and not wanting to go inside but thats also createing a new problem as tens of thousands of people in that area are out there without clean water or sanitation. Good morning america will have the latest coming up right after action news. Happening dat beginning of race week in philadelphia. It culminates with a blue cross broad street run on sunday. City officials plan to hold a pep rally at the city hall courtyard at 10 30. The 10mile race is so popular organizers hold a lottery for registration. Officials will reveal details on the run today, which is the countrys most popular 10mile race. Hm. Some picture. Yeah. A lot of people. Thats why its so popular. Right. Storm tracker six live double scan shows that you today isnt a bad day for a run. Weve got no rain and as we take a look outside we are cool relatively comfortable. Im questioning or suggesting a jacket as you step outside because we are a bit on the cool side but obviously lots of bright sunshine melting away those early clouds. 52 degrees currently in philadelphia, the winds out of the northwest at 13 miles per hour. And it will get a little more breezy than that as we go through the day. Boy you can really see how the clouds overnight have evaporated and that flow of dry air coming down out of the mountains to the north. As we take a look at temperatures today, 54 by 8 oclock but by 11 oclock were up to a more comfortable 60 and during the afternoon well spend most of the time in the upper 60s. By 2 oclock 67. Your high of 69 is late today. Probably around 4 oclock. And i could see us still sitting on that by 5 oclock before gradually dipping down into the mid 60s later this evening. High temperatures up and down the board. 68 degrees in allentown, 69 in reading, very similar in the Lehigh Valley as to what well see in the i95 corridor. The closer you get to the shore the cooler you get. Low 60s in Atlantic City and cape may but everybody under the sun with that breeze. Speaking of sunshine with highs near 70 and lots of sunshine nice weather out there, the u. V. Index is running high and we do want to remind that you its a great day to put on that sunscreen. Tomorrow probably the same story as the uv will once again be on the bright side. Tomorrow at 12 30 in the afternoon you can see how future tracker six still has us on the sunny side. We may see a few more clouds dig in as the afternoon goes on. And then all eyes will be down to the south as well see an area of low pressure that will develop a coastal low and that will bring some cloud cover up in our direction and perhaps a couple of showers. Your exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, 69 is todays high. Sunny and breezy. Then tomorrow nice and warm, 74 degrees. Sun in the morning. A few more clouds as the day goes on. Then we get that coastal system making its move towards the northeast. Will make us more cloudier on thursday with some sunny breaks. A high of 67 and a chance of a shower around. Then friday down to 61 degrees. It looks like a cloudy day, a couple of more showers or at least some drizzle possible. But that storm kicks off the coast in time for the weekend and on saturday were looking warmer and nice with a high of 70 degrees. Great for the union kickoff right here on 6abc at 4 00 p. M. Ill be helping them preview that game on 610 a. M. This afternoon. The unions 90th minute show. Stop by chickies and petes in drexel hill if you want to watch that show live. Sunday sunny and warm 76 degrees. Looking niles for the broad street run in the morning and nice for whatever you want to do in the afternoon. Good. All right. Thank you david. Okay. It is 6 41. A teacher is hailed as a hero for risking his own life to go after a student with a gun in his school. His story is next up on action news. Theres over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. Jim kenney and Tony Williams are fighting over Public Schools versus charters. I think theyre both wrong. Its making sure they all get a good education. Teachers should have their contracts respected. They also should be held accountable. And its wrong philadelphia gets less School Funding than other parts of pennsylvania. Ill work with harrisburg to change that. But if they refuse ill take them to federal court. As mayor ill do whats right for them. 6 44. Sun starting to soak the region including the ben franklin bridge. It is 51 degrees. Getting up to 69 today so a little warmer than yesterday. A little breezy in the afternoon. Lets go to matt pelman see what your commute looks like. It is so bright out there this morning. Not that were complaining. Dont get me wrong. We like the bright sunshine. But it is slowing us down with some sun glare in a few spots like here on the schuylkill expressway. You can see that sun reflecting off the overhead signs there and eastbound is kind of heavy now from the blue route on in toward the curve again from just past the blood. You know, its all the normal stuff mixed in with a little bit of sun glare on this Tuesday Morning. Heres something new as of yesterday during the mid days 8 00 to 4 00 each day this week theyre closely weedily road in Congress Push between hughes road and gulph road. Stick with croton road or gypsy road. Did he have ton vonn state road closed during the mid days through late may around the time of memorial day. The leftover from yesterday morning that we continue to deal with is in lower providence Montgomery County. The continued closure of south park avenue and after looking at that scene from yesterday morning the accident with the trucks and the big fire that resulted its not surprising that the road is still closed. Closure points continue to be eagleville road and joad road. Its a short stretch of south park thats closed but remains blocked nonetheless. Those of that you use it as a cut through in the morning cant do that. Might want to stay on egypt road or use trooper or stay up on sunny side avenue to get around it. A new crash in southampton bucks county by the 1111 along maple avenue at street road. Northampton chink pin road closed. Matt. Damage a tornado left behind in that louisiana. Storm knocked out power to 100,000 people at one point. Utility crews cut that number by more than half. Another rounds of Severe Weather is expected in the northern gulf states today. The severe storms that swept through louisiana also did this. Blowing several train cars off of a rail bridge. The rail cars were empty and did not contain any hazardous materials. Classes resume at a Washington State high school today where a teacher tackled a student who had a gun. Freddie olson raced towards the 16yearold shooter jumping on him before any more shots were fired and indeed no one was hit. Detectives say the teen shooter may have actually wanted to be shot and killed by the schools resource officer. They think that because he never aimed his weapon at anyone firing instead into the ceiling and the floor. That young man is now in juvenile detention. Grief counselors will be on campus today. And this new video will make your heart skip a beat and your blood boil. A speeding souvenirly plowed into those three children who were about to step onto their school bus in Washington State.
