this time and i heard a gunshot go off. >> reporter: she says she could hear the gunshot was fired in her backyard. state police arrived moments later to find the 50-year-old victim had been shot to death. as investigators started searching the area they found the home of 61-year-old gary mauer less than a block away with the lights on and the front door opened. inside they found mauer's lifeless body on the living room floor. they quickly determined he died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. now the only known link between mauer and zimmerman is that zimmerman was a family friend helping mauer sort out some personal and financial issues involving his mother who died about two weeks ago. and since the only two people who know the full story are dead, police say they may never know for sure the motive behind this murder-suicide. >> unless somebody that knows something we don't know yet, something we didn't talk to comes forward and tells us the rest of the story, we don't really know. >> reporter: now, to be clear k-mauer lived here in this home, zimmerman lived with her husband in nearby mohrsville r police say gary mauer had a few dui's in his past but apart from that nothing violent. as of right now the motive remains unknown. reporting live from shoemakersville, walter perez channel6 "action news." arrick. >> fbi director james comey was put on the hot seat on capitol hill. today comey went on the record for the first time about russia's alleged involvement in the 2016 elections and president trump's wiretapping claims. comey said the fbi is, whoing into links between russia and trump's campaign. as for the wiretapping allegations, comey said they may be unfounded. >> with respect to the president's tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, i have no information that supports those tweets. >> we'll have more from comey's testimony and reaction from the white house coming up tonight at 5:30. >> philadelphia police are trying to track down thieves who pulled off an elaborate heist in the city's lawncrest section. officials say a million dollars in merchandise was taken from the kim thanh jewelry store on whitaker avenue a the thieves used a ladder to get on the roof under the cover of darkness and then broke in from there. ropes were found near a hole on top of the building. >> these look like professional thieves. >> absolutely professional the way they did the roof, go the in, climbed in, extricated through the wall and they did it probably pretty quick, too. >> this is the second time in two months this particular store has been hit. officials say the thieves triggered a security alert overnight when they broke in but the owner thought it was a false alarm. >> all right, turning to little bit more tomorrow. right now philadelphia 52 degrees. we hit a high of 54 degrees which is very appropriate since today's official average high is 54 degrees for our first day of spring and one month with that sun angle getting higher, temperatures really soar. the average high for april 20th is 66 degrees. now, satellite and radar showing we did start the day with loads of sunshine, blue skies. some clouds are beginning to stream in. if you look out across the ohio valley there is some moisture but most of this is heading to the south. so, we could get a.m. spotty shower or two tonight but for the most part we'll just have some clouds o. temperatures will not be dropping to freezing tonight. it will stay relatively warm and this week we have some wild swings in temperatures. it's going to be very cold on wednesday with wind chills in the 20's. could hit 70 on saturday. it's mainly dry this week until the second half of the weekend. i'll talk more about that coming up in hi, monica. the players are here in negotiations because their attorneys are based here. the championship to be played in michigan at the end of the month. the players vow they will not be there unless there are some big changes in their compensation. the existing women's national ice hockey team has won six world championships since 2000 and medals in the 2010 and 2014 olympics. but unless a deal can be hashed out in a meeting room at the ballard spahr law firm here in center city its 23 players say they will boycott this year's championship series. at issue, pay. the players say u.s.a. hockey pays only $1,000 per month per player for six months during olympic years. they claim other times they get virtually nothing. u.s.a. hockey counters it has prepared a package for next year's olympics that include "stipends and incentives for medals that could result in each player receiving 85,000 in cash." the players say they are seeking a yearly living wage something above $60,000 plus childcare and other benefits. >> i think it's really interesting because it's part of the stage that we see across the world on many levels in terms of women and equity. >> reporter: laurie armstrong is a labor attorney. she's not involved in these talks but has followed similar sports negotiations. with the championships just days away, she believes the players have their best leverage now. >> there's a fine associated with a country not putting a team in. i think the women's players view that as you pay us or you can pay the fines. doesn't it make more sense to pay us. i also think there's an embarrassment factor. u.s. women's ice hockey does not field talented well performing team. they're the host team. >> reporter: that last line in reference to u.s.a. hockey has signaled it will >> thank you, john. for the next few weeks it will be a little tougher to get out the blue route in plymouth meeting. crews are working around the clock to upgrade the e-z pass direction planes in by 7 o'clock. as we head into the afternoon the clouds will be breaking and with some of that late march sun, should manage to make it up into the upper 50's by 5 o'clock so even a little bit more make it feel like 24 degrees and thursday morning wind chills drop down into the teens. so, it's still going to feel like winter wednesday and thursday and then a nice temperature recovery as we head "action news" reporter vernon odom live in center city now with more. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, monica. tonight police sources tell me they're hot on the trail of the subway attackers from last week. the have ick tipple victims areg with the transit police. late today i spoke with jared one of the victims of last week's subway attack as he entered septa headquarters to identify those who attacked him and several of his school mates. you can clearly see jared in the middle of the fray as they tried to stop the attackers from throwing ice at other students. >> they were throwing ice blocks at the high school students and middle school students. >> reporter: were they high school students too. >> some looked older. septa detectives hope jared can that identify some of the gang who brutalized them in the race vine subway station just after school let out last thursday. >> we were just blind sided by it. we couldn't really do anything. >> reporter: just overwhelmed, hm? >> yeah and they had my friend on the ground. then just 10 of them on him so i had to step in and do what i could. >> reporter: we are shielding jared's identity as much as possible. somehow the attackers got his iphone number and have been making threatening calls and sending texts as well. he says he won't be intimidated and the he and wants justice. >> they just went after us. >> reporter: you're staying in school and keep on going back. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: police are hot on their trail. you would like to see them prosecuted. >> yes i would. >> reporter: rick again police sources are wynnefield heights remains under investigation tonight. police say a car struck a pole near belmont avenue and ford road just after 2:00 a.m. no word yet on what caused the crash. the identity of the person killed has not yet been released. bill cosby's lawyers want to question a potential jurors in the comedian's sex assault case before jury selection. the defense motion caw filed today asking permission to send jurors a questionnaire to read out those who already have pins on the case. cosby's lawyers claim the worldwide coverage makes it likely that some potential jurors already have made up their minds about the comedian. the jury will be sequestered from the pittsburgh area a the trial will then be held in and montgomery county in june. cosby is accused of drugging and molesting former temple university employee andrea constand back in 2004. >> three men facing charges from a traffic stop that led to major drug bust its a story our delaware news room has been following for you today. here is more of what we know. this is what police say they found in the suspect's car more than 600 bags of heroin crack cocaine, loaded handguns and almost $5,000 cash. secret police officers say they seized it after they stopped the vehicle that smelled of marijuana friday night. they searched the car and arrested the driver and two passengers, mark muse patrick palmer and gerald x all face drug and weapons related charges. >> from washington tonight, did the obama administration really order wiretapping of trump tower before the election? did russia try to influence the presidential campaign? and what's going on with the leaking of classified information? those are the big questions on capitol hill today. >> fbi director james comey and national security agency director mike rogers answered some but not all of those questions that were posed by members of the house intelligence committee. >> director comey publically confirmed for the first time that the fbi is investigating russia's efforts top interfere in our elections. >> and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the trump campaign and the russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and russia's efforts. >> to do so -- >> comey added the investigation will also look at whether crimes were committed but he says he cannot disclose who is being investigated. typically the fbi doesn't discuss or disclose the existence of ongoing investigations. >> concerning president trump's ongoing claims that former president obama wire tapped trump tower during the presidential election here's what director comey had to sa say. >> both are being taken very seriously. i have no information that supports those tweets. and we have looked carefully inside the fbi. the department of justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the department of justice and all its components. the on to explain in according to u.s. law no president or any other individual can order surveillance of an american. he says courts can grant permission after a a rigorous application process. >> director comey and director rogers agree that it is a very serious problem. >> leaks of classified information are serious, serious federal crimes for a reason. they should be investigated and where possible prosecuted in a way that reflects that seriousness. >> i'm also reminded the men and women of the national security agency if i become aware of any such conduct, there is noplace for you on this team. unacceptable to the citizens of the nation. >> president trump and many republicans are pressing the fbi to do more to find the source of the leaks of that classified information. >> and new jersey congressman republican frank lobiondo is a member of the house intelligence committee. lobiondo asked today about what the nsa discovered when they looked at how russia was trying to influence the election. >> we saw the use of external media, we saw the use of disinformation, we saw the use of leaking of information much of which was not altered. >> representative lobiondo went on to ask what the u.s. needs to do to prevent russia or any state sponsored government from interfering in future elections. rogers said we need to have a continued partnership between the government and the private sector to ensure security. >> also on capitol hill today, it was the start of the senate confirmation hearings for president trump's supreme court nominee neil gorsuch. the hearings will last four days. tomorrow senators will begin questioning the judge. during today's hearing, bitter -- bitter partisanship was on display. >> senate republicans made a big show last year about aring the voice of the american people in this process. now they are arguing that the senate should rubber starch a nominee selected by -- starch a nominee selected by al president who lost a popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. >> the american people played a very direct role in helping choose this nominee. like the renowned justice he is set to replace, judge gorsuch is brilliant and has an impeccable academic record. >> if confirmed, gorsuch would fill the seat of justice antonin scalia who died back in february of last year. then president president barack obama nominated judge merrick where it's off to the side. still though you're looking at speeds in the 30's as you come southbound on 95 toward center city. we're also watching a wreck in narberth this afternoon along montgomery avenue eastbound by price avenue. that's where the beneficial bank is on the westbound side. so one lane is blocked there. and we had a lane blocked because of a broken down pickup truck on the schuylkill eastbound approaching 26th street. that's gone but still heavy from montgomery on in. westbound on the schuylkill just 15 miles per hour approaching the roosevelt boulevard extension. here is how it looks life of locked up like it normally is off the schuylkill northbound up to broad street. douglas township a crash to avoid along 73 philadelphia avenue at williams way by the mickey d's over in robbinsville still working on that crash on the southbound new jersey turnpike near 7a. one lane of the inner drive blocked but in deptford township our crash on 55 northbound is gone. still, orely airport. that attack on saturday caused panic and shut down the french capitol's second biggest airport. the 39-year-old french attacker was shot dead within three minutes during a standoff. there are still no credible sightings of a missing 15-year-old girl and her former teacher now accused in the kidnapping. tennessee's bureau of investigations has released new images of the suspect, 50-year-old tad cummings. he allegedly kidnapped elizabeth thomas a week ago from her hometown in tennessee. a short time ago police say he may be hiding her in a rural area possibly at gunpoint.
