northwest suburbs, lehigh valley, the poconos that changeover will not be happening until midday, 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock and that could also have a lot of icing so this is kind of breaking down the big story on the weekend. early saturday morning into midday, we get that snow, some icing, changing over to rain. saturday afternoon and saturday night we have a lull in the action, just lots of clouds, a little bit of drizzle, some dense fog mainly north and west. areas that get that accumulating snow, the fog could be fierce saturday night. sunday the cold front approaches. it will be rainy and temperatures crash. we start, look at that, 60's in the morning, by the afternoon in the 40's and overnight in the 20's. i'll talk more about the totals as far as snow and show you future tracker coming up in the full accuweather forecast, guys. >> cecily we'll see you then. thank you. chopper6 spotted penndot trucks out and about already preparing the roads here in langhorne bucks county ahead of tonight's system. crews say they're concerned about both the accumulating snow and the potential for freezing rain around the region. the city of philadelphia is ramping up for the next frowned mother nature as well. crews will be dispatched around midnight to salt primary and secondary roads around the city. the department says it has more than 50,000 tons of salt ready to be used if necessary. >> philadelphia international airport is taking its own precautions ahead of the winter blast as well. airport officials say they have 200,000 gallons of deisising fluid on hand and ready. there's also 65,000 tons gallons of runway deicer on hand as well and 1,000 tons of rock salt. all major airlines have a winter weather advisory in place meaning if you are flying out this weekend you can change your flight without the fee. delaware department of transportation says it is prepared for the wintry mix as well. the agency is nearly at full capacity when it comes to salt storage. as the weather approaches you can check the accuweather forecasts around the clock, a live look at double scan radar is always available on the 6abc app. >> turning to other news tonight a bucks county judge and two law enforcement officers are facing serious charges after police say they were caught in a money laundering scheme. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live in center city with the brand new details. chad. >> reporter: yeah, rick, the three men were supposed to enforce and uphold the law. instead, prosecutors say, they broke it for a quick buck. judge john walton lower southampton director of public safety are accused of laundering $400,000 in cash. the trio was shared in a federal spring involving the irs fbi and homeland security. according to the complaint undercover officers and a cooperating witness confronted the men about claiming proceeds from drug trafficking and health insurance fraud. they're accused of three money laundering transactions for fees totaling 80,000 in cash. >> what they did was the undercovers brought cash to the defendants and in return, the defendants gave the undercovers a check for the money and fake invoices to make it look like the defendants were actually performing work for the undercovers. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney's officers says rafferty had a consulting company called raf consulting. prosecutors say rafferty obtained bogus documents invoices consulting and real estate agreements with the intonate conceal the unlawful activities. >> what precipitated you to approach these men? i mean, we're talking about -- this is an undercover sting but obviously you had to have been receiving that some information that they would be willing to launder this money. >> we can't address matters involving the investigation. >> reporter: walt man has been the presiding judge over the disturbing child sexual abuse case involving lee kaplan and daniel and civil la stolfutz. the couple are accused of gifting their children to kaplan who sexually abused them and impregnated one child, as the head of the southampton police department hoops was also involved in the case. and the judicial board of conduct has released a statement in the past half hour saying that it has petitioned to have judge walt man suspended pending the outcome of the case all three men have been released on their own recognizance. live in center city chad pradelli. rick. >> 73-year-old tony carter of warminster is facing five felony counts tonight in connection with a sexual assault investigation. carter was arrested after the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old in warminster over the period of a year. he's being held tonight on $1 million bail. >> a cobbs creek family is grieving the loss of a 10-year-old boy killed today in an early morning fire. the flames broke out around 4:00 a.m. on the 1200 block of south millick street. a man inside the home managed to scramble to safety but the 10-year-old who neighbors say was his son was trapped on the third floor. firefighters say it was a difficult morning. >> the fire did what we call a flashover which involved the entire building in fire and the just a really tough fire fight. you know, our folks are just crest fallen right now. this is a tragic outcome. >> this morning's high winds spread the flames to three other nearby homes. tonight the red cross is helping more than 10 victims. >> pennsylvania senator bob casey called for gun safety reform nationwide today. the senator hosted philadelphia city council president darrell clarke along with a panel of gun control advocates at the temple university school of medicine. the discussion came just weeks after a two-year-old was accidentally shot by his four-year-old cousin. >> all right time in you for the "action news" traffic report on a friday. >> friday night finally here and matt pelman is in the "action news" traffic center with the latest on the way to get home tonight. matt. >> you'll finally make it home eventually. it's just going to take some time on this frigid friday evening rick and sharrie. here on the pennsylvania turnpike it's an extra slow go as you travel eastbound out of chester county into montgomery county and it's thanks to this, an accident on the eastbound side right by the exit for valley forge and king of prussia. they just got the crash pushed out of the left lane here but it is still slow as you come eastbound, east of malvern and then farther east toward norristown just 15 miles per hour so it gets even slower beyond that. on the big picture coming off the blue route 476 onto route one, there's a crash along weymouth road. i would use baltimore pike instead. still have that fire location in overbrook at haverford at 62nd. septa's route 10 trolly is shuttle busing. in delaware claymont a crash blocking the northbound side of business 13 at holly oak road, appropriate for this time of year. if you're crossing from delaware into south jersey there's a broken down truck on the jersey side of the delaware memorial bridge just 8 miles per hour coming off 295. you might want to head to the commodore barry to get into the garden state instead. we'll check it out again coming up in the next half hour. >> what started as a search for a package thief in northern liberties has ended in a heartwarming show of support. "action news" first showed you this surveillance video earlier this week of a man spotted taking packages right off the front step. he may have thought that they were present but they were actually donations for kids in need. tonight app community has come together to replace what he stole. jeff chirico has the story all new at 5:00 tonight. >> it's just totally overwhelming and really exciting. >> reporter: it's a delivery danielle chevy wasn't sure she'd make. dozens of coats for children at gw elementary school. more than doubling her initial goal of 50 coats. she began checking them after a friend teacher at child's told her several students did have warm clothes. her coat drive hit a snag. a thief made off with several packages of donations that had just been delivered to chevy's ' front porch. after she asked for help donations started pouring in from across the city and the suburbs. >> high people messaging me on facebook from all over the city. a lot of people from northern liberties, some feeble from outside of the city that had actually driven over an hour in to make donations. yeah, people just felt compelled to help. now she's collected twice as many as she had planned, the generosity of her fellow philadelphians warming her heart and children in need. >> philadelphia is the city of brotherly love. i think we get a bad rap. you can see from something like this when there are people in need people step up to help and we have a lot of love to give in philly. >> reporter: femme philadelphia police say they arrest there had suspected thief when he tried to strike again at another home in this neighborhood. as for the coats they're here at the school. the guidance counselors are going to distribute them to the student in need. in northern liberties, jeff chirico channel6 "action news." >> and there's much more still ahead on "action news" at 5:00 tonight and that includes a new life saving drug hitting pharmacy sales next week after a major company came under fire for price gouging. >> if you're fighting off a cold or a cough double-check any medicine that you may be taking. ali gorman explains the danger you could be putting yourself in if you're headed to a holiday party this weekend when "action news" returns. >> ♪ (my hero zero by lemonheads) zero really can be a hero. get zero down, zero deposit, zero due at signing, and zero first month's payment on select volkswagen models. right now at the volkswagen sign then drive event. >> right now the un is standing by to help with what is being called a major humanitarian crisis in syria. dozens of civilians have reportedly been killed in aleppo in recent days as pro-government forces retook the city from rebels. an evacuation of civilians was under way but had to be stopped because of an increase in fighting. tonight several countries have called for resumed peace between the two sides. opposition leaders say they are open to a discussion but only if it is moderated by the un. president obama held his final end of year news conference as president today. the president answered a wide range of questions but made his strongest statement on the topic of the russian hacking during the presidential election. the president stopped short of saying that president vladimir putin of russia orchestrated the attacks but confirmed it was at the highest levels of the kremlin. >> in early september when i saw president putin in china, i felt that the most effective way to ensure that that didn't happen was to talk to him directly. and tell him to cut it out and there were going to be some serious consequences if he did and in fact -- >> the president also said offered president-elect donald trump some specific suggestions about safeguarding the integrity of the office. >> all right health check tonight. the maker of the epipen releasing a cheaper generic version of the product. mylan came under fire for the soaring cost of the life saving treatment which could stop a severe allergic reaction. it's expanded its financial aid program but has not lowered the cost of the drug. the generic version will cost $300 for a two pack. they go on sale in pharmacies next week. it may be the season for eating and drinking but watch out if you're taking medicine for a cold or cough. drinking even a little alcohol might not mix well with those over-the-counter drugs. ali gorman has the details tonight from consumer reports. >> drinking alcohol while taking medication may be more common than you think. >> it might be one glass of wine or mimosa. >> i've had allergy medicine just a little while ago and i've had a drink. >> would i do it again? yeah, sure. >> but taking some commonly used drugs while drinking can make the alcohol stronger. >> in other cases taking medication while drinking can actually increase their effect or cause potentially harmful side effects. >> for example, antianxiety drugs like valium or ativan taking them with alcohol can cause dizziness drowsiness or slow breathing and increases the risk for overdose. the same for opioids, mixing alcohol with antibiotics such such -- many over-the-counter drugs can also interact with alcohol. >> some antihistamines can cause increased drowsiness. over common pain relievers like advil or tylenol can be dangerous when taken with too many drinks. >> the health risks of mixing alcohol and medication can especially increase when you're taking more than one drug. bloop medicines can cause various heart problems when taken with alcohol. and if you are on the blood thinner coumadin and have more than three drinks, it could increase the risk of a stroke. so, if you're on medication, think twice before reaching for that drink. ali gorman, channel6 "action news. >> ♪ >> it's a big weekend for "star wars" fans. oak one is in theaters nationwide. the first stand alone movie of the franchise s has already hit a box office milestone. "rogue one" brought in $29 million last night alone. that's the biggest thursday night opening of 2016. "rogue one" is produced by a position of disney a parent company of 6abc. >> big announcement at the university of delaware today in newark. the school has been awarded a $70 million gran from the u.s. department of commerce for the formulation of a new manufacturing u.s.a. institute. the largest grant in the history of the university and it will be used specifically for bio pharmaceutical research on campus. u.s. secretary of commerce opinion key prisker was on hand for the announcement. that's her in a red coat. she called eight phenomenal formula for progress and information. >> peco is lighting up the holidays this season. potpourri of things happening. >> there certainly is. a very messy storm on the way will bring us a little bit of everything. right now it's dry out there. it's cold. but like family everything is relative. compared to yesterday it's not that bad. live on sky6 taking a look at the rothman ice rink at dillworth park. a lot of people out there getting a little exercise enjoying the holiday season. >> [inaudible] >> adam right there looks pretty good. he's been practicing. and there's monica right there. all right, temperatures right now if you're heading out, you do want to bundle up. it's cold. 24 in philadelphia, 22 in allentown, 26 in cape may. wilmington 24 but this time yesterday we had wind chills generally in the single digits. now just a little bit of breeze out there. does create a bit of a wind chill but wind chills most of the region in the teens but compared to yesterday it's not quite as harsh. satellite6 along with action radar showing here's that snow. this is the leading edge of a storm system that will really bring us a mess over the week. as it moves in tonight it's cold enough for snow but then it will be pulling in a lot of mild air so future tracker showing if you're heading out tonight looks like the snow should be holding off until after made night around 1 o'clock we have some snow showers breaking out especially philadelphia and areas up to the north. looks like it really intensifies early tomorrow morning but then you can see what's happening across south jersey and delaware. already that changeover to rain and that changeover will be happening from the south to the north. by 9:30, the i-95 corridor, it's raining. the problem, though, will be our far northwest suburbs, northern berks, up are montgomery, upper bucks lehigh valley to the poconos. this is where you could get an extended period of icing on top of the snow accumulating. then we get a lull in the action. by 1:30 it's just cloudy and damp. the second part of that storm will bring us rain and falling temperatures on sunday. so, as far as front ends snow, folks at the jersey shore, southern new jersey, southern delaware, you're not getting anything. we get close to the i-95 corridor, this is where we get a coating to an inch. closer to the lehigh valley, berks county one to 3 inches and then north of the lehigh valley three to 5-inches of snow. the poconos could get pretty good hit of snow from the system before that changeover to ice. the problem with ice is that north of the pennsylvania turnpike it could be accumulating tomorrow morning. a glaze of about a tenth to 210ths of an inch. if you live north of the pennsylvania turnpike you have holiday shopping i suggest ugg wait until later in the day tomorrow to do it. midafternoon will be much better than the morning. so, the five day at 5: sunday it's 60 degrees. periods of rain with that cold front, the temperatures by the afternoon falling to about 40 degrees. overnight low 27 so any puddles of water will be freezing solid. we dry out on monday, 34 degrees. bump it up to 40 on tuesday, partly sunny and winter begins, it's mild, how ironic, 45 degrees but tracking another system on thursday. "action news" friday. the cold snap continues and now we're tracking a wintry mix of snow, ice conditions and rain overnight. also the folcroft police officer who survived a violent ambush appears at the suspect's preliminary hearing. and president obama is at odds with president-elect trump over russia's interference with the u.s. election. what it could mean for the country moving forward. >> now to the details. it's a sure sign that wintry precipitation is on the way. penndot trucks treating major roadways to make sure traffic runs smoothly no matter what falls from the sky. >> and it will be a mixed bag for mother nature overnight. we'll see snow, ice and rain before it's all over. >> meteorologist melissa magee is in for adam tonight. she's live at the big board with the latest from accuweather. hi melissa. >> hi sharrie and rick. lots to track as we go throughout the rest of our week. storm tracker6 live double scan radar we've got winter storm warnings across the northern plains and winter weather advisory from the midwest to the great lakes eastward into the northeast because of the moisture we're tracking you can see that snow already setting to set up shop across the northern plains. this will continue to work its way eastward overnight tonight and into the day on saturday which is why we do have those advisories posted. something to keep in mind even though we are tracking some moisture tomorrow in the form starting out as snow temperatures will be rising so 4 o'clock in the morning it's 31 degrees. by 8:00 a.m., 34. but by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, numbers will be in the lower 40's so you could see how we get that transition from snow eventually back over to liquid precip. as far as the impact a lot of folks out and about maybe doing some holiday shopping this time of year. tomorrow 7:00 a.m. right through 10:00 a.m. the impacts will be on the high side. we get a lull, a break in the activity by 1 o'clock tomorrow so just a moderate concern. low impacts as we get into 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night as conditions do dry out before we track our next batch of rain that moves in on sunday. a lot to go over. we've got details each of them on facebook and twitter for regular updates. >> the man hoop allegedly tried to kill folcroft police officer christopher dorman faced him and his family in a delaware county courtroom today. dante island appeared before a judge for his preliminary hearing. it was determined that he will go to trial for attempted murder. officer dorman who was shot seven times allegedly by island during a drug investigation back in june also attended today's hearing. his parents spoke to "action news" about supporting their son during his recovery and this upcoming trial. >> i do have faith in the justice system and i will be here for support for not only my son but the whole law enforcement community and there's -- you know, as many officers that are losing their lives and being shot and treating us the way they are i would like to be an example. >> i think it's nothing short of a miracle that he survived what he survived and, you know, god said not today. >> officer dorman has had several surgeries and returned to work in septa. three men who reportedly opened fire on philadelphia police overnight are now behind bars. this happened along the 100 block of east roosevelt boulevard in feltonville. detectives say the trio was suspected in a robbery nearby and were pulled over. authorities say that's when the men opened fire on officers. eventually they were taken into custody and a gun was recovered from their car according to police. none of the officers was hurt. >> two police officers are recovering from an early morning car crash in south philadelphia. their cruiser collided with another car at the intersection of broad street and snyder of a just before 2:00 a.m. the officers were taken to methodist hospital with head and leg injuries. both are expected to be okay. the two people in the other car were treated for minor injuries. also in south philadelphia, police are investigating after several packages have been stolen from door steps. newly released surveillance video shows a man take a package from the 1000 block of morris street last week. investigators say two days later a man was caught on video taking a package from a home in the 100 block of carpenter street as well. >> princeton university has suspended its men's swimming and diving teams. a complaint came earlier this week about offensive material being shared among student athletes. the couldn't stents described as vulgar misogynistic and racist in nature. a decision about the remaining athletic schedule is still pending. >> ♪ the white house is at odds with president-elect donald trump over the reports of russia's election interference. that topic dominated president obama's final news conference of the year today. abc's karen traverse is covering the story for us live in washington, d.c. with the very latest. karen. >> reporter: good evening, sharrie. president obama said he personally warned russian president vladimir putin to put an end to these cyber attacks but today he would not give any specific details about how or when the u.s. would retaliate. president obama forcefully defended the u.s. response to russia's election interference were. >> we handled it the way it should have been handled. we allowed law enforcement and the intelligence community to do its job without political influence. >> reporter: his traditional year end press conference dominated by questions about russia's cyber attack including why didn't the obama administration make a bigger deal about it or retaliate before election day. >> i wanted to make sure that everybody understood we were playing this thing straight. >> reporter: the president said he confronted russian president vladimir putin this past september. >> when i saw president putin in china, i felt that the most effective way to ensure that that didn't happen was to talk to him directly and tell him to cut it out and there were going to be some serious consequences if he didn't. >> reporter: president obama said after that the u.s. didn't see any further tampering. putin has yet to publicly address the issue but u.s. officials say they have solid evidence the russian president personally ordered and directed the cyber attack. president obama wouldn't say that explicitly but said this happened at the highest levels of the russian government. >> i will let you make that determination as to whether there are high level russian officials who go off rogue and decide to tamper with the u.s. election process without vladimir putin knowing about it. >> reporter: president obama was also asked if donald trump is emboldening russia with his pushback against the u.s. intelligence community. the president declined to criticize the president-elect. reporting live from schuylkill there was an accident westbound near gulph mills. that's off to the side and it's actually eastbound that's a little bit heavier if you're headed into the 76ers game on 76 tonight stop-and-go traffic from 202 the whole way into belmont. slow again then from montgomery in toward south street. still have that water main break to watch out for and a lot of ice as a result in manayunk along dawson and terrace. crash on 95 northbound by bridge street is gone. now there's one in center city by the marathon grille at 16th and sansom and fourth near tasker by dickerson square park watch out for another accident. crash on the turnpike eastbound by valley forge is off to the side. in plymouth meeting a wreck by conicelli along ridge pike near chemical road. an accident involving a pedestrian in hatfield. watch out for the emergency crews on the scene along crime erode at holly lane. in northern delaware philadelphia pike is still blocked at holly oak road on the northbound side by seasons pizza. you want to use 495 or 95 they're fine but 295 jammed headed into new jersey across the delaware memorial bridge. there's still a truck there blocking a couple of philadelphia sheriff's deputies were on a special holiday mission this morning to make sure local families in need have presents under their tree this christmas. "action news" reporter annie mccormick was right there. >> reporter: members of the philadelphia sheriff's office dispatched to the south philadelphia five below store for an important job. they're buying gifts for children who need a little help this holiday season. >> disabled veterans families we're going to be doing this year. we're also going to be doing family shelters. we're going to be doing schools. i mean year trying to reach as many families. >> reporter: the list of who they're helping has expanded since the office started this tradition several years ago. the sales of these t-shirts have raised more than $5,000 this year for the gifts. >> we have shirts printed every year sheriff's shirts which have a nice toy drive on the back. we sell these shirts for $20 and then the proceeds is used for the toys. >> reporter: after making their list and checking it twice, they carried the goods away until it's time to play santa and deliver them to the children. >> for us it's really great. i mean, to do this it's awesome i mean, it really touches our heart for many of the officers. >> reporter: santa has a sleigh. sheriff's office has their own transport and an entire fleet. they're going to use those vehicles to transport the toys to the kids starting tomorrow. in south philadelphia, annie mccormick channel6 "action news". >> time for sports now. jeff skversky -- [laughter] >> who. >> jeff skversky. >> i don't know who that is. precip over the weekend which is why we have those winter weather advisories posted across all of the delaware and lehigh valleys. right now in philadelphia it's 24, 22 for reading allentown and lancaster. 25 in dover. coming in at 27 at the coast in cape may. here's satellite6 along with action radar. lots of clouds across much of the midatlantic region. what we are tracking overnight tonight into the start of the weekend you could see the snow breaking out across the northern plains. this will continue to streak eastward as we get into really after the midnight hours. future tracker6 showing you by 1:00 a.m. we've got snow. it's light here in philadelphia, same thing for areas north and west but we really have to wait for things to moisten up closer to dawn. that's when you notice the 6 o'clock morning we've got that snow heavier batches of lavender popping up for our northwest suburbs up through reading allentown and the poconos. mixed bag of precipitation just to the south of philadelphia. south jersey and central delaware we are dealing with mostly rain. by 9:30 in the morning we're already starting to find that transition, some snow over to rain along the 95 corridor. it stays wet for south jersey and delaware but still mixed precipitation for reading, allentown and up through the poconos. by 1:30 tomorrow afternoon bit of a lull, a break in the activity. we have areas of fog north and west where we pick up low level moisture but as far as the front end snow and what we're expecting tomorrow little to no accumulation atlantic city to dover. coating to an inch for interior sections of south south jersey. in our immediate northwest suburbs for downingtown pottstown quakertown 123-inches of snow. northern berks northern lehigh county up through the poconos you could find three to 5-inches of snow before you get a gradual changeover to rain. but there will be a period of icing in between for spots town, doylestown, up through easton and the poconos. we could find .10 to .20 of if i say before it changes to rain. that's the first system we're tracking for the start of the weekend. then another break down on sunday, a day of change on the way. near 60 at dawn early on sunday. then conditions do moisten up once again as we have rain that moves on in. quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain likely but temperatures near 40 degrees by sunset and there could be some puddles overhead as we get into sunday afternoon so puddles will freeze overnight. not expecting anything on the roads but as temperatures drop below freezing there could be some areas of icy concern. so here's the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast. snow to ice to rain tomorrow high temperature 44. early high on sunday, close to 60 degrees with temperatures quickly falling throughout the afternoon. then on monday it is brisk and cold, a high temperature of just 34 degrees. tuesday partly sunny and dry and at 40. winter begins on wednesday with a high temperature of 45 degrees. thursday mostly cloudy, a couple of showers around with the eagles at home and at 46. 44 next friday, guys with the clouds and some sun. so a lot to go over, "action news" reporter bob brooks is live at the penndot yard in norristown. let's set the stage with cecily tynan and accuweather. >> jim this is a two part storm system each part occurring on each day of the weekend and double scan live showing the first is a warm front that's create something snow across the midwest. this is streaking to the east and this will be filling in in the overnight hours. so, there is a winter weather advisory, goes into effect at 10 o'clock tonight but i really think most of the action occurs in the wee hours of the morning and then these advisories will be expiring from the south to the north as we get a changeover to first ice and then rain as the system pulls in a lot of very warm air. temperatures right now certainly anything but warm. it's 24 degrees in philadelphia, another brutally cold day.
