festivities are already under way. there were some initial concerns about the weather but beachgoers tell me they are here rain or shine. earlier this morning mother nature wasn't up for fourth of july celebrations but it was hard al concern. >> i really like it. >> reporter: what about the weather? the weather is kind of funny. >> yeah. >> doesn't matter. >> doesn't matter. >> you can still have fun. >> reporter: ice cream in hand, little quinn couldn't wait to hit the boardwalk with his grandparents. >> hi ocean city. >> reporter: and show his patriotism. >> happy fourth of july. >> reporter: from mini golf to water parks and good music. >> here at the water park we've got people coming in for parties and groups. >> reporter: there's tons to do. you can fly a kite or ride bikes along the boardwalk. >> the boardwalk, i like that it's the family. it's perfect for her. she lovers it. >> reporter: you may be wondering how do you take on this action pack long weekend. super mom say they're gearing up for the very busy weekend ahead and this might be a good piece of advice for you. they are saying the earlier you come, the better and of course just save some energy for monday a list of local events along with time and locations. >> we're following breaking news from overseas. isis has now taken responsibility for an attack on a restaurant frequented by foreigners in the capitol of bangladesh just east of india. two police officers were killed in that attack which happened in the diplomatic quarter of dhaka. right now foreigners are still being held hostage. it is not clear how many or where they are from. we'll have updates for you as soon as we get them on "action news" and on 6abc.com. and that attack in bangladesh of course comes just three days after three men attacked atatürk international airport in turkey killing 44 people. turkish officials are reportedly looking into one of isis top lieutenants a chechen extremist as the mastermind. two of the three attackers have been identified and at least two dozen people have been arrested in connection with in attack. those situations overseas means security is on top of the mind for travelers on this very busy holiday weekend. according to aaa it will be a record travel weekend for philadelphia area drivers and around the country officials are beefing up security to make sure everyone gets safely to their destinations. abc's marci gonzalez live in new york with all those details. >> reporter: monica, there are no specific threats but police departments across the country say they are prepared to handle any potential issues this weekend. a potentially record setting travel weekend as many as 43 million americans expected to hit the roads rails and skies. >> everybody heads out of town or goes to a lake or family reunion. >> reporter: just on friday alone, 3 million people flying. that's half a million more than on an average day this summer. >> we actually are expecting. >> reporter: those crowds at the airports across the country are seeing extra security. >> there will be so many security measures and personnel you will not notice including plainclothes troopers. >> reporter: an added precaution for the holiday and in response to tuesday's deadly terror attack in istanbul. >> once i got to the airport i was just that much more aware. >> reporter: added awareness and patrols also at train stations, bus terminals and tourist hot spots. >> we are very, very vigilant. we'll have exceptional nypd presence to keep everyone safe. >> reporter: but most holiday travelers, about 36 million of them are opting to drive to their destinations. in part because gas prices are at their lowest in more than a decade. the average gallon, 50 cents cheaper than a year ago. >> prices are low and i figured i would give it a shot, travel. >> reporter: and to avoid traffic, experts say the best time to head out is tomorrow. either before 11:00 in the morning or after 1:00 p.m. live in new well. philadelphia police tell "action news" they'll be keeping a close eye on crowds especially during the concert and fireworks on monday. some will be easy to spot but police say they'll be adding officers to areas the average person will not see. it could be a tough weekend for the taj mahal in atlantic city. right now casino workers are striking on the boardwalk outside after the union and the casino failed to reach an agreement. about 1,000 workers walked off the job at 6:00 this morning after contract negotiations broke down. "action news" reporter john rawlins will have more on the showdown in ac coming up at 6 o'clock tonight. >> ♪ >> a transit police officer with septa has been disciplined for his actions involving a man he arrested at the frankford transportation center. it happened on june 4th and was caught on camera here. the officer matthew sinkowitz had physical contact with a man he arrested for disorderly contact. he was found at fault for the way he handled the man and also because he violated the department's body camera rules. >> it's very important that the body cameras capture what the officer is saying that's going to prompt enforcement action. >> the officer did not turn his camera on until after he put the nan handcuffs. the man in question has had several run ins with transit police and he was cited for this incident june 4th. the officer was disciplined but not terminated. >> well, those of you who have not yet hit the roads or are perhaps eager to do that right now as we get a check starting to build there. this is one of our longer delays. it's only taking about 13 minutes to go from 295 down to the a.c. expressway. the a.c. expressway looking great. once you jump on the garden state parkway that's before you'll start to see some slowdowns. the ben franklin bridge nice and clear in both directions there as well. you'll hit the brakes on the walt whitman bridge. we'll see you grand jury investigation that started in 2014. andre wilson of merchantville new jersey was the alleged leader of the drug trafficking ring. it involved cocaine crystal meth heroin marijuana and prescription pills. ag kane said the dealings were connected to los angeles in the california area. a local nba prospect was formally indicted today on attempted murder charges. 22-year-old rasheed jordan was also denied bail in a philadelphia courtroom. detectives say he shot a man during an attempted holdup in the 2400 block of diamond street back in may. jordan played for broccoli school. he had played in the nba's development league for the philadelphia 76ers this last season. >> well, wall street closed out an active week with minor gains today heading into the holiday weekend. markets ended up 3 percent for the week the biggest weekly gain since november. this after concerns over britain's pending exit from the european union spooked investors causing stocks to plummet. the dow jones rose 19 points, the s & p 500 gaining just four points today. if those aren't big enough for you how about these. you have less than five hours to buy into tonight's mega millions drawing. the jackpot sits at $415 million. nice chunk of change. the action cam found a line of people at a gas station in wynnefield hoping to get that lucky ticket tonight. ticket sales end at 9:59 p.m. and of national convention and convention ceo reverend lea daughtry says she can stand by her regular motto. >> we are doing great. we are on time on task on budget. >> reporter: while the events inside the wells fargo arena require credentials daughtry says there will still be plenty of ways for the rest of to us participate. >> she's made it stronger. >> reporter: every day regular dnc meetings will be held at the convention center they'll be free and open to the public starting at 10:00 a.m. >> you can be part of the conversation. you can hear some of our policy initiatives you can participate meet democratic party officials and meet like philadelphian who's are here and want to be engaged as well. >> reporter: but you can also expect some of those delegates to come you to popping up at historic sites and in the neighborhoods to sight see mingle and spend money. >> so look out for the folks who may be a little lost need some help who want to know where the best places to hear some jazz or to get a cheesesteak and only philadelphians can tell them that. >> reporter: and even if you're not a delegate you can be in the room where it happens to steal a line from the play hamilton. the wells fargo arena will be opened for public tour on the saturday and sunday before the convention starts. daughtry promises chaos and congestion will be minimal with little to no road closures and plans to move delegates around outside of rush hour but if you still choose to keep your distance and just watch on tv you should still catch quite a show. lots of stars are expected including a rumored well, we have a lot of warmth and a lot of humid air. 81 in philadelphia, out to the west in lancaster 84 degrees. at the coast in millville, we're at 72 where we are dealing with that rain cooled air and 76 degrees there in cape may. you look at the humidity and you could feel the moisture in the atmosphere. we have a 71-degree dewpoint in philadelphia, same thing in wilmington, 73-degree dewpoint in dover. so, once you get that cold front clashing with the very warm and oppressive air mass, it will sure to fire off some showers and storms some of which as we have seen are turning on the severe side. here's satellite6 along with action radar and this is the cold front that's moving across the midatlantic region. , seal that red watch box, that's a tornado watch box to the north of our viewing area encompassing areas in new york city and we are currently underneath a severe thunderstorm watch that stays up until 10 o'clock tonight. we'll time it out for you. future tracker six showing you 6 o'clock this evening we've got those showers and storms for the poconos and also some activity sliding to the south and east of philadelphia at that time. 9 o'clock, still isolated but strong to severe showers and storms firing up across the delaware and lehigh valleys. by midnight that cold front has yet to completely clear the region but as we go throughout the overnight hours into early saturday morning, we'll start to clear out and high pressure returns and it sets us up for a really nice start to our holiday weekend. so, at the shore tomorrow, 80 degrees, sunny and nice afternoon sea breeze. 84 in the city tomorrow, beautiful by the afternoon. up in the poconos amazing and comfortable with a temperature of 72. here is your five day at 5:00. as we look at the day on saturday, 84 with low humidity, beautiful on sunday and at 86 degrees. on monday, for the actual holiday, for the fourth of july, a high of 86. turning cloudy with some showers likely as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. we'll take a closer look at that system, guys, coming up in the next half hour. we'll send it back over to you. >> thank you so much. sounds good. there's much more to come in our next half hour of "action news" at 5:00 a foul smelling down right dangerous problem is affecting wildlife and the way of life for millions of residents in part of florida. we'll explain. >> and the president of a local little league association is put in handcuffs this morning. what authorities are accusing lymph doing. >> also it's as much a part of the fourth of july holiday as fireworks and barbecues but the annual nathan's hot dog eating contest is admitting now it's not quite all it's cracked up to be. we'll explain. >> those stories and much more when "action news at 5:00 comes right back tonight. >> ♪ >> it is 5:30. "action news" continues and we are monitoring breaking news out of bangladesh and the capitol city of dhaka where isis is now claiming responsibility for taking dozens of hostages in a restaurant. at least two police officers have been killed. 40 people are hurt. the situation is still not over. also this at tack is going on right now located east of india in dhaka bangladesh. it is diplomatic zone very popular with foreigners. we're hearing that the group of as many as nine gunmen stormed that restaurant exchanging fire with police and throwing explosive devices. it's unclear how many folks are still being kept in the restaurant or how many are hurt but at least 26 people are now at local hospitals, then critical condition. the u.s. state department says at this point all americans that are on official business with that government are accounted for. so that's good news. and we'll continue to follow this breaking story from bangladesh and bring you updates just as soon as we get them and world news tonight with david muir of course will have much more on the developing situation in bangladesh. you can watch that following "action news at 6:00. >> but first here at 5:30 we're continuing monitor strong thunderstorms popping up across the region. >> some are producing torrential downpours and power winds. meteorologist melissa magee live at the big board tracksying the storms with double scan radar. >> we're tracking that activity all because of a severe thunderstorm watch that has been posted for the entire region that stays up until 10 o'clock tonight. the biggest concern as we watch the showers and storms move on through the possibility of some damaging winds, hail, we've already seen hail in excess of an inch or an inch and a quarter reported and we cannot rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado as well. so, we'll talk about what we can expect through the early evening hours. lightning is certainly a high concern with these pop-up but severe showers and storms. strong downpours across the region. strong winds. a moderate concern for large hail and isolated tornadoes popping up across the region. so, that is the day today but it does get better as we get into the rest of our holiday weekend. we will be ranking the days on saturday coming in at number one with bright sunshine, low humidity. for sunday it's mostly dry but a few high thin cirrus clouds move in. you get the number two spot and on monday for the actual holiday for the fourth of july, it turns cloudy and there is the likely hoods of a couple of showers. we'll take a closer look at that check out future tracker6 and let you know when all of this moisture moves out with the full and exclusive accuweather forecast guys. >> sounds good. now to the july 4th holiday weekend which is always a very big celebration of course here in philadelphia. >> yeah, because so many people are expected in the city over the next several days, safety is priority number one. >> "action news" reporter chad pradelli live along ben franklin parkway for us with much more. hi, chad. >> reporter: hey, monica. police say it will be business as usual. they're accustomed to securing big events like monday's concert and they'll be ready for the packed parkway. the parkway was bustling with crews installing the infrastructure for monday's concert. hundreds of thousands of people are expected to pack the parkway keeping them safe is a job of philadelphia police and they will be out in force. >> every time we have these events we want officers to be seen so you'll see a visible presence of police officers out there. some will even be wearing the neon vests so they'll be easy to spot but there will also be officers out there that you won't necessarily see. >> reporter: terrorist attacks in orlando and turkey have heightened safety concerns. talking with tourists and visitors to the art museum this afternoon, it seems most feel safe. >> i keep in my mind and. just aware of the situation where i'm at but it's not going to stop me from living my life. i think we need to continue on and do what we have to do. >> i'm not really worried about it 'cause i mean i'm a christian so i just -- i'm secure in where i am. if anything happens i'm okay with it. >> reporter: police are aware of the recent terror attacks but that has not prompted any additional safety measures. >> there's no specific threat to philadelphia at this particular time but of course we're always concerned in a searches making sure that we're abreast of what's going on around the country, around the world. >> reporter: and if you see something, say something. live along the parkway chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> thank you chad. "action news" has you covered online and on social media this holiday weekend. you can get live traffic and weather updates any time on 6abc.com. and be sure to follow us on facebook and twitter for any updates this independence day. >> philadelphia police say a woman who refused a man's advances is lucky she was not hurt because of it. this after he fired off several gun shots through a glass door of the women's shelter where she was staying. the incident was captured on surveillance camera yesterday at logan. the 36-year-old woman told police the man tried to talk to her as she walked into a rite-aid store and she told him she was not interested. she walked out of that store a few minutes later and he noticed -- she noticed he was following. the woman walked back into the shelter and that's when the man fired three bullets into the glass door and ran off. >> hm. a sneaky thief pulled off on early morning burglary in philadelphia's port richmond section yesterday. it was all captured on surveillance video. it happened about 1:00 a.m. in the sports kingdom in the 2800 block of kensington avenue. you can see the suspect there crawling on his hands and knees and weaving around some clothing displays. he then made his way over to the display case and took 30 cell phones out worth about 10 grand. the suspect then took off. from ocean county, this is 57-year-old point pleasant beach little league president vincent cicalese. he's accused of stealing $10,000 from the little league bank account. he is taken into custody this morning and faces several theft charges. >> ♪ >> how now to the latest in the 2016 race for the white house. we are just weeks away from the republican and democratic national conventions both presumptive nominees are vetting their vice presidential picks while protecting their own campaigns. attorney general loretta lynch says it is perfectly reasonable to question her meeting with bill clintony clinton on the tarmac at the phoenix airport. though she and clinton insist the meeting was purely social in nature. many are skeptical. donald trump says clinton's meeting with lynch was "opening a pandora's box. today he told a group of conservatives in colorado that he thinks hillary clinton set up that meeting herself. as this went on inside trump supporters clashed with protestors outside. several taken away in handcuffs. abc's megan hughes live in washington, d.c. tonight. megan, you've got more on all this. >> reporter: brian, good evening. the attorney general today really opening up about all of this and taking on those criticisms head on. she says she does regret the meeting and there's no question it was bad o optics. answering questions republicans and democrats have asked for days. >> what on earth -- [laughter] -- were you thinking? what happened. >> reporter: lynch reiterated she and bill clinton engaged in small talk about grandchildren on the tarmac of a phoenix airport. it wasn't arranged it was a chance encounter but she understands how people view it. >> i certain wouldn't do it again. [laughter] and, you know, because i think it has cast a shadow over what it should not. it's painful to me because the integrity of the department of justice is important. >> reporter: as for the e-mail investigation, lynch vows to defer to the fbi director and career agents working on the case. >> and i fully expect to accept their recommendations. >> reporter: donald trump expressing skepticism that their meeting was all small talk. >> i love my grandchildren so much but if i talk about them for more than about nine or 10 seconds, you know, what are -- >> reporter: trump seizing on the story at the western conservative summit in colorado. >> but it's not a joke. it's not a joke. it's a very serious thing and to have a thing like that happen, it's so sad and as you know hillary is so guilty. >> reporter: white house spokesman josh earnest did you distancing the president as he prepares to campaign with clinton for the first time in north carolina tuesday. >> he believes that this matter should be handled without regard to politics. >> reporter: the attorney general was also asked when the e-mail investigation will conclude. she didn't have an answer saying download for your mobile device. it took almost three years but repairs to a bridge in montgomery county are finally finished. the arcola road bridge reopened today. it goes over the perkiomen creek in lower providence township. it was deemed structurally deficient and was closed in august 2013. the bridge is mostly used by workers to get to phoenixville and can collegeville. >> and let's turn our attention one final time to the roads this evening. >> speaking of roads let's go to autumn marisa in for matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. >> hi, monica and brian. if there was ever a time to leave for the shore or delaware beaches now is the time. our delays are very minimal on all of the major roadways. here we are on the blue route, this is southbound approaching baltimore pike. you can see only 30 minutes right now from the schuylkill expressway to 95. earlier today that was an 84 minute delay. so we're definitely good to go there. checking out speeds across the region schuylkill expressway 50 miles per hour both directions from the vine to the blue, blue to the vine only taking you about 20 minutes right now. you're just flying out there. let's take a look at the 42 freeway. here we are at creek road. here are our southbound lanes heading down to the atlantic city expressway doing so very nicely. we have a few incidents in new jersey. 73 southbound at 295 there's an accident to report. and on 55 southbound approaching 641 another accident out there. 55 northbound in vineland we have a tractor-trailer that jackknifed earlier, that is off to the beaches. beginning today the flow of fresh water from lake okay lope bee to the ocean will be reduced. many blame it on the pollutants from the lake. the governor declared a state of emergency because actually some activity we're tracking to the south and east. we'll take a look at that in a moment but also some activity west of philadelphia. we'll go in a little tighter on street level with storm tracker6 and you can see this cluster actually starting to fall apart just to the south and west of chester even if you're traveling south along route three as well and also some activity south and east of chadds ford at this hour as well. now we'll slide you down to the south and east of philadelphia and you can see those strong showers and storms across areas in south jersey from malaga also into buena into egg harbor mays landing, about 64 lightning strikes associated with this within the past 15 minutes. also getting lots of reports of heavy rain. we'll flip this over. this is something we can do with storm tracker6 and we've already seen more than 3-inches of rain in some locations, also into cumberland county, you can see in millville just to the north of that region 3.4-inches of rain in the past hour here and this moisture continues to move on off to the north and east. that's why we've got there severe thunderstorm warning that's posted right now it's four atlantic county so it has expired for cumberland county but it continues to press on off to the north and east staying up until 6:15 this evening. egg harbor city pomona mays landing included in that severe thunderstorm warning. moving to the northeast about 25 miles an hour, winds in excess of 60 miles per hour and quarter size hail certainly a possibility. getting a lot of reports of storm damage across the delaware and lehigh valleys. in burlington county half dollar size hail reported. also in burlington county quarter size hail reported. delanco trees down. those were reported in that county, bridgeport in lancaster county, trees also uprooted and in cumberland county getting reports of pea sized hail because of the strong showers and storms. pretty warm and pretty humid at this hour. it's 81 degrees in philadelphia but you could feel the moisture in the air. 81 in reading. 78 up in the poconos. at the coast from beach haven down cape may, temperatures are holding into the middle and lower 70's. here is satellite6 along with action radar. you can see the yellow shaded box. that's a severe thunderstorm watch that stays up for our region until 10 o'clock tonight. the red shading here that's actually a tornado watch posted across areas in new york and also through upstate new york, that's also staying up until 10 o'clock tonight until the moisture moves out. here's future tracker6. 6 o'clock this evening we're still tracking a broken line of scattered activity from the poconos down to lancaster, same thing for areas south and east of philadelphia into south jersey. 9 o'clock tonight we're still in and out of the wet weather. it's not until we get into midnight that this cold front finally wants to clear. in the wake that of turning clear and high pressure returns just in time for the start of our fourth of july holiday weekends. so, if you're traveling down the shore tomorrow, certainly a better start than it was today. sun soaked, a high temperature of 80 degrees. delightful on sunday, coming in at 78. on monday, clouds and some showers around and at 77 going to have to watch the forecast closely on monday because that is actually the fourth of july and we want to get throws fireworks offer as well. up in the poconos sunny and comfortable at 72. 75 pleasant on sunday and on monday, sun giving way to increasing clouds with a high temperature then
