WPVI Action News 5PM June 13, 2016

The flowers, the photos, the mementos that have been left at this growing vigil. This is a city, this is a country in mourning. This investigation is now in its seconds day and theres still many questions that need to be answered. The last of the remaining bodies of the deceased were removed from the pulse nightclub this morning. Fbi agents and other Law Enforcement then began reconstructing omar mateens movements during his killing spree. They know he opened fire on the main dancing stage and then took hostages in a bathroom. Finally Orlando Police chief john mina decided to blast an exterior wall when loss of further life was imminent. We used our Armored Vehicle, the bear cat Armored Vehicle to punch a hole in that wall and defeat the wall so theres a local in the wall about 2 feet off the ground. Reporter authorities dont believe mateen was working with anyone who still may put the public at risk but they are investigating others and they will be prosecuted. Investigators know mateen was homophobic and radicalized a bit through the internet but fbi director james comey says theres confusion about motive. When mateen pleaded allegiance to isis in phone calls to 911 dispatch during the attack, he also mentioned terrorist bombers with no isis affiliation. Ly like the president , comey refrained from naming mateen. Part of what motivates sick people to do this kind of thing is some twisted notion of fame or glory and i dont want to be part of that for the sake of the victims and their families. Reporter this is a city that is struggling to cope with the tragedy. There are growing vigils banners of expression and a range of emotions from anger to despair. Giovanni nieves lost two friends, anthony and leroy. They were just amazing beautiful people. They didnt deserve to go the way they did. Reporter and again out here live you can see just one of the photos of two of the dead victims in this tragedy. It has really been a sad heartbreaking scene out here all day as people have come out here to put the mementoes down, just the look on their faces, the solemn look of sadness, it is palpable. Again there will be a mass vigil at 7 00 p. M. Hundreds, possibly thousands are expected to attend. Im live in orlando, chad pradelli, channel6 action news. Chad, thank you. Were also learning more about people from our area who are inside that pulse nightclub at the time of the shooting and that includes 17yearold akyra murray of southwest philadelphia. She was killed in the attack. Akyra was a star basketball player at west Catholic High School and was headed to mercy hers the university in eerie on a scholarship. Tonight shes being remembered as a top student and as a friend to all. Top three in the class. Very respectful to everybody. She just she just embraced everybody here and treated everybody as an equal. Murrays friend 20yearold patience carter was also inside during the attack. Carter was in orlando trying to promote her budding music career. She was shot in the leg but shes expected to be okay. Tonight people across the philadelphia area will mourn the victims from yesterdays shooting. Sarah bloomquist continues our coverage and shes live at city hall tonight. Sarah. Reporter well, rick, thats right at 6 30 there will be a candlelight vigil here on the north side of city hall, a chance for the city to come together, a show of solidarity in the aftermath of the massacre in orlando. Earlier today, we were there as representatives from various religions and the Lgbt Community came together to condemn the attack, to call for an tend to such hatred. Outside arch Street United Methodist Church 50 empty seats are assembled around a long table its a stark representation of the 49 People Killed in orlando by one person who as the church says was twisted with hate. The pastor was among a collection of faith and lgbt leaders who came together today to send a clear message about the massacre in orlando and what should happen in the aftermath of yet another mass killing in this country. I stand here in solidarity and in sadness but in defines to any violence that comes from hatred to say that love, the love of humanity will overcome all violence. As american muslims, support the statement of our president. We condemn the senseless violence committed by the individual. We extend our condolences to the families of those lives that were lost in this violent incident. Reporter mark siegel publisher of the philadelphia gay news warned against using the massacre to further a political message calling out donald trump specifically. He uses the statement to bash other political people. He doesnt address or speak to those of us who are mourning. Youre a coward. Reporter now, all of the leaders at that news conference, there was also a rabbi and a representative from the quaker community. They all intend to take part in that candlelight vigil set for city hall here at 6 30 tonight. Of course they will be joined by members of their respective communities. Live in center city, im Sarah Bloomquist channel6 action news. Thank you, sarah. With yesterdays attack on ton of the mind one of the Big Questions is how do we stop it from happening again . Action news spoke with a former Homeland Security security official today about omar mateen and any signs that he was capable of committing such heinous crimes. Both his exwife and coworkers described mateen as toxic and conflicted. According to experts that made him a perfect target for radicalization. These are people that are that are highly recruitable by organizations like isis, by even the organizations historically like the nazi party. Looking for those true believers, looking for those people that if you join us, we will recognize your genius. Experts stress the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to authorities. They say their initial role is not to make arrests but rather to try to help a person with social services first. The massacre in orlando has left many of us of course feeling fearful or hopeless. That can includes your children. Psychologist elizabeth gosh says parents should not mention the attack to children underage five unless they bring it up. For children over five years old, parents should discuss it but in simple terms with no graphic details. You should also do it calmly, reassuring your kids that they are sane loved. Teens may also get graphic details about it on social media so the doctor says they need some balance. Such as people helping other people, people caring about what happened, people trying to make the world a safer place so that these kinds of things dont happen. And how they can become involved in that. She says the flood of blood donors in orlando is one example that shows that good can come out of this trap defect stay with action news throughout the evening for more on the shooting. Well have crews at local vigils that are happening tonight here to honor the victims. Were also working to learn more about those from our area who are affected by this attack. Turning to accuweather tonight now and the beautiful start to the week for the Delaware Valley. Looking live outside right now, sky6 showing you we going to the jersey shore and its Atlantic City. A pretty picture there tonight. It was a cooler breezy day not nearly as windy or as hot as the weekend but not a bad day to be at the shore. Meteorologist cecily tynan is live outside with what we can expect for the work week. Hi, cecily. Hi, rick. We have a very comfortable start to the work week with temperatures in the 70s instead of the 90s like over the weekend. Take a look, philadelphia currently 77 degrees. Thats 5 degrees below the normal high for this time of the year. Reading 75. Wilmington 76. From end ton 73 and you got that land breeze, not a sea breeze so down the shore just as warm as inland, the Atlantic City airport in beach haven currently 78 degrees. Part of the reason why it feels so nice, its the humidity level, the dewpoints are below 60 degrees. So, thats a very comfortable air mass and that air mass will be with us through the day tomorrow. It is a little bit on the breezy side but we have wind speeds generally from about six to 15 Miles Per Hour out of the west. Yesterday we had wind gusts up near 40 Miles Per Hour. So, all in all very comfortable tonight. The evening planner showing well see some clouds here and there but generally just partly cloudy skies. By 8 oclock, 73. By 10 oclock, 70. By 11 oclock, 69 degrees. As we look ahead, we stay in that low humidity tuesday and wednesday. I. Tracking some rain on thursday lingering into friday but a look at the weekend. Time to check that action news traffic report for you monday night. Monday night matt pelman in the action news traffic center. Hey, matt, how was your weekend. Saturday was good. You know, yesterday i think was a little tough for all of us. Yes, it was. Yes as we kick off this work week were watching plenty of volume on the vine street expressway eastbound side from the schuylkill on out to 95. Vine will close again during the overnights this week starting at 11 oclock for construction. Were used to this. If youre hopping off the vine going across the ben franklin bridge, get on 676 southbound. You dont want to get on the admiral wilson boulevard eastbound. It is jam packed headed towards the old airport circle. Thats because of construction right here and on 38. Eastbound just past the circle two of the four lanes are going to be blocked all week so get on 676 southbound and then use roads like Mount Ephraim avenue the white horse pike, et cetera, to get where youre going. This afternoon you dont want to use 130. Theres a crash there by clem avenue by gormleys auto center just 12 Miles Per Hour. Right now just 20 Miles Per Hour on 95 southbound in delaware because of that crash approaching 896 and dont use route two instead. Theres a crash there as well at red mill road. Whichever way you turn youre hitting something. Well check it again, rick and monica in the next half hour. Thank you matt. Much more still to come on action news at 5 00 tonight.
