Thats the goal of a program called rock steady boxing. 52yearold susan quinn is fighting back against the disease that has slowly weakened her right side. Shes always been active. Biking, hiking, everything. Reporter she doesnt want to give that up. But two years ago she was diagnosed with parkinsons. A neurological disease that typically gets worse over time. Now shes going through an assessment with physical therapist carol leaper and former professional boxer joey. We look for balance. Thats the main thing. He says soon quinn and dozens of others will enroll in rock steady boxing classes. Its a program thats started in indianapolis. The local parkinsons counties sim has expanded it here in philadelphia. It uses noncontact boxing fitness to help slowly progression of the disease and relieve symptoms. Stretching helps lessen stiffness in the upper body. Punching can help steady tremors and the foot work helps improve balance and coordination. With boxing they have to keep moving their feet, theyre shifting their weight. Reporter leaper says it also gives them a sense of empowerment. Quinn is eager to start. Shes hoping it will slow the progression of her disease and allow her to live as she likes to live. He also owns jolt and jabs and calls his students and rock steady becoming warriors. Seeing these people with this disease, i see them and i fist pump them and they he get fired up and man it brings it makes me so happy. You can see from chopper6 still some active flames here. The fire was reported along the side of the turnpike at exit four.
