return. the item that could be under your feet. good evening. it's great to have you with us on a friday night. we begin with president trump taking new action against iran, saying they're not behaving. this evening, tehran already responding. also at this hour, new numbers revealed, showing the scope of the immigration ban so far. tens of thousands of visas revoked, many of the people right here in the u.s. but first, the new action against iran, and swift reaction from tehran. we begin with cecilia vega. >> reporter: the president today landing in florida for a weekend getaway at his winter white house, mar-a-lago. but not before making good on that threat to put iran on notice. >> they're not behaving. >> reporter: the white house issuing new sanctions, going directly after people and entities tied to iran's ballistic missile program. we asked today, is this just the beginning? should americans be ready for the possibility of military action with iran? is that on the table? >> look, i've said this before. the president has been clear. he doesn't take options off the table but he understands the impact of something like that. >> reporter: in a statement tonight, tehran saying it "will respond proportionately" and that iran's missile program is the undeniable and inalienable right of the iranian nation. as the white house goes on offense against iran, it's playing defense on the president's controversial extreme vetting executive order temporarily banning travelers from seven majority-muslim countries. it is now the subject of multiple lawsuits. and in a virginia court today, a justice department attorney said more than 100,000 visas have been revoked. >> the number 100,000 really sucked the air out of my lungs. i think you could almost hear the collective gasp in the courtroom. >> reporter: the state department later said the number of people who had their visas revoked is actually about 60,000. amid the fallout from images like these, families detained at airports around the country. the white house initially focused on a much smaller number. >> we had 109 people that were temporarily detained. they're all in, but they were temporarily detained to make sure that the safety of the other 324 million americans was put first. i don't see how that's a big problem. >> reporter: tonight, it is becoming increasingly clear. tens of thousands of people, directly impacted by the new policy. of the nearly 60,000 who've had their visas revoked, thousands are already here in the country. they won't be deported, but if they leave they won't be allowed back in. and there are tens of thousands more overseas with visas already in hand who would have been allowed in, but no longer. >> cecilia, the white house says the immigration ban was designed to keep terrorists out of the country. but as you point out, thousands who have had their visas denied are already here. >> reporter: yes. and sean spicer said he didn't have details, they will not be deported, but they will not be allowed back in if they leave. >> thank you. next tonight to one of the president's closest advisors, kellyanne conway. under fire for a statement she made. citing the bowling green massacre by iranian refugees. here's brian ross. >> reporter: officials tonight in bowling green, kentucky, are rushing to assure everyone their town is safe, and always has been. that's after white house senior counselor kellyanne conway, defending the president's travel ban, claimed iraqi refugees had carried out a massacre in bowling green. >> i bet it's brand-new information to people that president obama had a six-month ban on the iraqi refugee program after two iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized, and they were the masterminds behind the bowling green massacre. i mean, most people don't know that because it didn't get covered. >> reporter: it didn't get covered because it didn't happen. there was no massacre in bowling green, kentucky, and there never has been a terror attack of any kind there. what did happen, which abc news first reported, was an fbi sting that caught two iraqi refugees on this undercover tape, convicted of trying to send weapons to iraq for attacks on u.s. soldiers there. the two had managed to get into the country even though both had known ties to al qaeda. >> if you're asking my opinion, i would say the system failed. >> reporter: the arrest of the two men, now in prison, led to a six-month drastic curtailment and overhaul of the iraqi refugee program in 2011. but it all happened in this quiet town of 60,000 without incident, without bloodshed, without a massacre. today, on the front page of the bowling green daily news, one word. wrong. it was another embarrassing episode for the white house counselor, who on inaugural weekend made this memorable claim. >> they're giving sean spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts. >> reporter: today on social media, the fake massacre claim went viral, widely mocked, a top trending topic. chelsea clinton tweeted, please don't make up attacks. conway responded to it all, saying she misspoke, "i meant to say bowling green terrorists," calling it an honest mistake and calling it phony outrage. >> no massacre, but the arrests in bowling green did lead to a change in the vetting process? >> reporter: yes, there was a top to bottom review, which authorities say fixed the process. again, there was no massacre in bowling green. >> brian, thank you. we have new reporting tonight after the terror attack at one of the world's most famous museums. taken down when trying to attack soldiers. at least 1,000 visitors inside the museum at the time. here's alex marquardt. >> reporter: the attacker on the ground today, surrounded by soldiers, shot four times after charging at them with two machetes. the attack happening at the shopping mall under the louvre. the attacker going down the stairs and going after the first group of people that he ran into, which was a group of soldiers. the attacker was identified through his cell phone as a 29-year-old egyptian who got a visa in dubai and came to paris on january 26th. he rented an apartment in an upscale neighborhood and spent almost $700 buying the machetes here in paris. this afternoon, we meet a group of students, undaunted. >> considering what happened, did you have any hesitation to visit paris? >> it's a scary time, but we didn't want to not come just because of the fear of something happening. >> reporter: that's the preva prevailing feeling, that life must go on. france is already at its highest state of alert. today, that security paid off. david? >> alex, thank you. there are new questions about a piece of video released by the pentagon after the deadly terror raid in yemen. a navy s.e.a.l. was killed. the u.s. military releasing the bomb making video. it was learned that video was online and available for everyone to see since 2007. here's martha raddatz. >> reporter: it is highly unusual for the pentagon to release intelligence they find in a raid and, in this case, highly embarrassing. the video clips, according to a central command press release, were on a computer seized in the raid and include do-it-yourself lessons for aspiring bomb makers, urging them to attack the west. all true. but all known. the video is nearly ten years old and has been available on the web since 2007. >> it's unfortunate that they rushed to get something out to show that this was a useful raid and ended up undermining their credibility. >> reporter: centcom quickly removed the video after realizing it was publicly available. but its release comes as the pentagon intensifies a review of civilian casualties in the raid. the seals met fierce resistance from al qaeda fighters in the compound, purportedly seen here, who appeared to know the americans were coming. s.e.a.l. william ryan owens was killed and three other americans wounded. president trump flew to dover air force base with his daughter ivanka this week to receive owens' body. his first casualty as commander in chief. >> martha, did the pentagon explain why it posted the video in the first place? if it was under any pressure to put the video up? >> reporter: first of all, they didn't realize it was already public. they said they posted it to show what al qaeda is up to every day. they said there was no pressure from the white house or anyone else. >> thank you. president trump, finishing the week with another round of executive actions. calling for a change in the rules for how financial advisors make recommendations. the president saying the law hurts small businesses. >> i have so many friends of mine, that can't get any money, because the banks won't let them bo borrow because of rules and regulations. >> elizabeth warren saying as president, we're finding out whose side he's really on. let's get to rebecca jarvis. there were protections in these laws for americans, retirees, and financial advisors. they were to pick the way with the lowest fee for these retirees. does that protection stay in-place?
