the cause of depth nath now rev. what we've just learned. good evening. and we begin tonight with what had been a joyous often at the air force academy in colorado. president obama speaking at graduation, but a short time later, right after the celebratory flyover, an air force thunderbird jet crashing, the pilot ejecting. these images of the f-16s making their final pass-by, just as the graduates for tossing their caps into the air. minutes later, that pilot parachuting back to earth. just minutes after the crash, the presidential motorcade was leaving graduation when the president asked to go meet the pilot. abc's clayton sandell is on the scene tonight. >> 2016 -- >> reporter: this was supposed to be a moment of pure celebration. >> dismissed! >> reporter: the cheers. the hats in the air. the five thunderbird f-16 jets soaring high above the graduating air force class at falcon stadium, when suddenly, something goes horribly wrong. 3:00 p.m. eastern. as the crowd celebrates, they don't know that one of those f-16s has just crashed only miles from the ceremony. >> aircraft emergency. report of an airplane crash, pilot ejected. >> reporter: the jet crash landing in a field across the street from a church, 20 miles away from the graduation. coming to rest on its belly. little sign of damage. president obama there addressing the graduating class, taking photos with attendees, also unaware of the crash. the pilot, major alex turner, ejecting from the plane and parachuting to the ground, right next to a road and power lines. in this aerial footage, you can see the long skid the plane made in the ground. major turner's plane on the side of the plane. according to the air force, major turner, from chelmsford, massachusetts, has logged 1,200 flight hours as an air force pilot, and more than 270 combat hours over libya and iraq since graduating in 2005. witnesses say the pilot was uninjured, walking in a field just after landing. minutes later, the president learns of the crash while in his motorcade. about 4:00 p.m., one hour after crashing, the president meeting the pilot at peterson air force base. here seen shaking hands. the white house telling us the president thanked major turner for his service and expressed relief he was okay. at almost the same time, in tennessee, another elite fighter, this time, a blue angels f-18, crashed near nashville. at least one killed. the team was prepping for an air show this weekend. and david, tonight, we're learning that navy pilot was not able to eject and did not survive the crash. here in colorado, the news was much better. the air force tells us that major turner kept his plane as low as possible for as long as possible until he was able to avoid any homes or buildings. david? >> clayton sandell on the scene for us in colorado. thank you. there is also new video coming in tonight of an officer being shot, one of two officers targeted in california near san francisco. the officer survives here, but here's the moment. aiming his weapon at the suspect. moments later, this. the suspect opening fire while hiding beside the car door. the suspect then seen running away. and this officer was not the only one targeted. there was another chaotic scene, and then a fiery standoff when the suspect was surrounded in a home. abc's jim avila is in freemont, california, tonight. >> reporter: this is the dramatic moment a traffic stop turns into a standoff. the officer on the left pointing his gun at the suspect standing by the white pickup truck. >> put your hands in the air! >> reporter: the suspect yelling, "why did you shoot?" the confrontation yesterday afternoon in freemont, california. from inside the pickup, the suspect appears to fire three shots. the officer struck, falls to the ground. he's in critical condition. the suspect flees right past the shot officer, through the parking lot and then through a supermarket. another bystander capturing the emergency response team frantically working to save the patrolman. >> call for every amr you got. >> reporter: ten minutes later, a second shootout and a second officer injured. authorities identifying the suspect as 44-year-old gerald jr. >> right now, we are in a mode of going out, searching yard to yard, door to door. >> reporter: overnight, the suspect is cornered in this house. he barricades himself. s.w.a.t. teams using flash bang grenades and tear gas. >> we introduced gas into the house in hopes to flush him out. he refused to come out. >> reporter: that startled the big fire in the small house at dawn. >> we have fire through the roof. >> reporter: by daybreak, the house still smoldering, the suspect is found dead, hiding in a closet. david, authorities say they don't know why he bolted from the traffic stop. he had no known warrants. the house where he was found belonged to strangers who were not at home and never in danger. david? >> jim avila in california for us. thanks, jim. we turn to the race for president now, and hillary clinton going on national tv this afternoon with what her campaign billed as a major national security speech. she walked out smiling, but she was armed with a list of why she says electing donald trump would put this country on a, quote, dangerous path. donald trump wasted no time, tweeting as clinton spoke. abc's cecilia vega is in california. >> reporter: the hits started right out of the gate, and they never stopped. >> donald trump's ideas aren't just different, they are dangerously incoherent. they're not even really ideas. just a series of bizarre rants, personal fulds and outright lies. >> reporter: before a bank of flags and teleprompters, hillary clinton delivering her new message. donald trump is dangerous to america and to the world. >> i have to say, i don't understand donald's bizarre fascination with dictators and strongmen who have no love for america. now, i will leave it to the psychiatrists to explain his affection for tyrants. i just wonder how anyone would be so wrong about who america's real friends are. >> reporter: clinton painting trump as reckless. >> there's no risk of people losing their lives if you blow up a golf course deal. but it doesn't work like that in world affairs. >> reporter: describing him as ignorant. >> he also said, i know more about isis than the generals do. believe me, you know what? >> eva pilgrim in minnesota. eva, thank you. now to the south tonight, amid horrific weather and the floods, an urgent search and rescue in texas at this hour, after a deadly accident involving a military vehicle. officials at ft. hood confirming that the bodies of three soldiers were recovered do downstream after a light/medium tactical vehicle overturned in high water. six soldiers remain missing. next, to new developments after the deadly shooting at ucla. we have learned this evening that the gunman had a so-called kill list. and that he had already carried out one of those killings before he even arrived on campus. there was chaos, we showed you last night here, after the g gunfire broke out. students told to kneel down, arms up. tonight, we now know his target at ucla was a young professor, a father of two, a little league coach. abc's kayna whitworth at ucla again tonight. >> reporter: tonight, chilling details in a deadly murder plot that left a beloved ucla professor dead, and a second victim, nearly 2,000 miles away. police say 38-year-old mainak sarkar targeted and killed professor william klug, before taking his own life in a blast of gunfire, as thousands of students ran for cover. >> we are conducting a search for the active shooter. >> reporter: police revealing tonight that sarkar's plans were even more sinister. a note found next to the bodies at ucla asked for someone to check on sarkar's cat, which led authorities to his home in st. paul, minnesota, where they discovered a kill list with three names. >> a list was located that had professor klug's name on it. another ucla professor's name on it. and the name of the female victim. >> reporter: that other professor was aware sarkar had issues with him, but on that day, he was off-campus and escaped unharmed. for the minnesota woman on the kill list, it was too late. that woman believed to be sarkar'ses stranged wife. >> they did locate an adult female, who was found deceased from apparent gunshot wound. >> reporter: officers believe sarkar may have killed her before driving in his 2003 nissan sentra to ucla loaded with ammo. >> he had two semiautomatic pistols. he had multiple magazines of am decision. he was certainly prepared to engage multiple victims. >> reporter: police now investigating this blog post from march, where sarkar called professor klug "sick," and accused him of stealing a his computer code. an accusation police say was unfounded. now, david, police not releasing the name of the other professor on that kill list, but they did tell me tonight that when they informed him that he was on that list, he wasn't necessarily surprised. of course, police adding, they don't believe he's in any danger tonight. david?
