>> no sort of animal products. eggs cheese. >> at all. we're going to get into all that later. we have to start. this outrage we're seeing across the country right now because of two high profile cases both involving police confrontations with black suspects and in both cases the suspects ended up dead. the scene in baltimore last night, about a thousand folks marching from the spot where freddie gray was arrested, they marched to a nearby police station. >> he suffered a fatal spinal cord injury under mysterious circumstances while in police custody. another case generating outrage, the volunteer deputy in tulsa free to go on vacation while facing a second degree manslaughter charge. abc's karen travers reports. >> reporter: police actions caught on camera. and creating controversy. in tulsa, oklahoma a reserve sheriff deputy pled not guilty to a second degree manslaughter ser charge. bates shot and killeded eric harris earlier this month after he uses his firearm, not his stun gun. >> i shot him. i'm sorry. >> reporter: the judge approved a request for bates to vacation in the bahamas before he returns to court in july. >> this will give us an opportunity to deal with the facts in the courtroom instead of the media. and we're looking very much forward to that. >> reporter: the tulsa case is one of a string of incidents where questionable actions by police where is videotaped. in baltimore, six police officers have been suspended with pay as the department investigates the death of freddie gray. police documents say gray was taken into custody without force or incident. but then according to police he suffered a medical emergency. >> on the scene nonbreathing. >> reporter: gray suffered a severe severe spinal injury. seven days after his arrest he died. >> we had no evidence physical or video or statement of any use of force. >> they're responsible for what happened to him because it happened in their custody. under extraordinarily suspicious circumstances. >> reporter: the justice department said that its civil rights division opened an investigation into gray's death. the baltimore police department released the names of all six of officers who were suspended. the city has promised a thorough investigation and says there will be no rush to judgment. t.j. reena. >> karen, thank you so much. we turn now to boston and a dramatic start to the penalty face for bottom erl dzhokhar tsarnaev. prosecutors in court yesterday trying to demonstrate tsarnaev has no remorse calling him "america's worst nightmare." now tomium mass in boston. >> reporter: this was the scene of horror prosecutors showed the jury on the day they began making their case for the death penalty. children screaming, victims on the ground, including 20-year-old gillian renne, only 18 then her mother lying over her. gillian part of the survivors group that testified, seles corcoran among the first to testify walking on prosthetic legs telling jurors i remember thinking i wanted to die, she said. pain was too much. prosecutors arguing that even now, dzhokhar tsarnaev is unconcerned, unrepentant and unchanged. in court they showed a picture of him incarcerated giving the middle finger to security cameras just three months after the bombing a sign they said of his lack of remorse. his victims divided on whether he should be executed. liz norton's sons each lost a leg in the bombing and tells us he should die for his crime ooze. >> i want it more now than before. you know i just -- i just think he's a monster. >> reporter: but others like the richard family who lost their son martin want tsarnaev sentenced to life in prison so he's out of the headlines and locked away forever. federal officials briefed on the initial witness list tell us he's not expected to take the stand but the defense could always change their mind. they present their case next monday. tomium mass it, abc news boston. >> new details about why the captain was arrested for the smuggling ship tragedy in the mediterranean. he and another crew member charged with reckless homicide and human trafficking. their boat allegedly crashed into a ship coming to the rescue of their overloaded ferry. at least 800 refugees died. deadliest ship wreck ever in the mediterranean. >> and pope francis senned the resignation of a missouri bishop. three years ago it, robert finn was convicted for failing to report a priest who took explicit photographs of girls. he became the highest ranking official in the u.s. convicted in the sex abuse scandal. pope francis says his papacy would show more accountability for abuse within the church. >> america's top drawing enforcement official is stepping down amid a sex scandal involving dea agents following a heated congressional hearing last week. agents attended parties with prostitutes. leonhart rt told lawmakers she didn't have authority to fire the agents. many received suspensions less than two weeks. >>ing what power do you have? you have to work with agents over whom you can't discipline and have no control and you have no control over the security clearance. what the hell do you get to do? >> what i can do. >> she gets to go home. leon hart spent 35 years at the de as the top administrator since 2007. she will be out of there by mid may. >> federal authorities are reviewing a disturbing incident involving a u.s. marshal in los angeles captured on cell phone. the armed marshall rushes toward a woman recording from a sidewalk. he snatches the device smashing it to the grounden an kicks it. he then walks off with a group of other armed officers. the incident was recorded by someone else who was across the street. two houston cops are accused of theft. this surveillance video shows two men in police uniforms breaking into a game room. the owner says they took thousands of dollars in a brown paper bag. he claims the same two officers confiscated even more cash earlier this year. police department says the break-in is under investigation by internal affairs. >> more details now about that huge whiskey theft from a distillery in kentucky. now nine people arrested accused of stealing well over $100,000 worth of the good stuff. that bourbon out of kentucky. the group and took at least 18 barrels from two distilleries in a scheme that started several years ago and toll cases of a very rare pappy van winkle whiskey. if you haven't heard of it some of it can go for about $1,000 a bottle. over 90%, 9% of the world's bourbon comes from the state of kentucky and they were just stealing a little bit here and there over the years thinking nobody would notice. finally caught up with them. >> why is it so good? he's admitting to a magazine he doesn't even consider himself a musician anymore. he wants to focus on fashion. wednesday, april 22nd. captions paid for by abc, inc. captions by vitac from abc news, this is "world news now" now with t.j. holmes and reena ninan. >> good morning, everyone. we are actually going to kick it off. the baltimore story we've been talking about all week seems to get bigger and bigger every day. >> there's so many answers we are still looking for. some information still creeping out. we still have no idea what happened to this man. >> the emotion so raw stemming from the death of a black man who suffered from a severe spinal injury while in police custody. >> his name is freddie gray. some of his friends and family overcome with emotion last night during a protest march that followed the announcement of the justice department now getting involved opening an investigation into his death. david kerley reports from baltimore. >> reporter: people hope to learn everyone several videos, is freddie gray's spine already injured before he's put in a police van? the u.s. justice department wants to know too, just launching an investigation into how gray suffered a severe spinal injury in police custody leading to his death a week later. also this auto panning police camera offers new glimpses of the arrest. watch someone running down the street. then a police officer with two bikes on that same street as squad cars arrive. short of a minute later, gray is seen on the ground. two officers standing over him but slowing and stopping the video, we see the officers kneel next to him. less than three minutes later, a quick shot as he's put in the van. police say they don't know when gray was injured but the mayor claims it happened in that police van where gray was isolated. >> why the contradiction? >> i don't know if it's a contradiction. i looked at the timeline. i looked at the information. i have a lot of concerns about what happened in the van. i want answers to those questions. >> a severe spinal injury is usually the result of strong blunt force. >> how could that happen in the back of a van? >> i don't want to speculate about the cause right now. >> reporter: after two nights of marching in baltimore, a vigil as the family of freddie gray waits to bury the 25-year-old. the mayor believes the autopsy report will answer many questions and has asked the governor to expedite its release. here at police headquarters the six officers involved with between three and 18 years on the force have been identified and remain suspended. david kerley, abc news, washington. >> we turn now to the other high profile police case in tulsa, oklahoma. the volunteer deputy facing second degree manslaughter charges is now free to go on vacation in the caribbean. robert bates, you see him there, that's his name, he's the deputy he pleaded not guilty in court yesterday. then asked the judge for permission to go fishing in the bahamas for almost a month. the judge said all right because bates' bail doesn't restrict his travel. he's free to go. but the family of the man who died when bates shot him with his gun instead of his taser says the trip sends a message of apathy about this case. >> a cruise ship's passengers and crew are relieved to be back on dry land. their ship wasn't able to dock in australia because of a storm there. abc's lana zak reports the extra time aboard was not a good time at all. >> reporter: from relaxing cruise to accidental roller coaster. this is what passengers on the carnival spirit have been watching out their windows. 30-foot waves and 60-mile-an-hour winds rolling into the cruise liner. >> one of those pieces of glass shattered right above us. >> chris, his wife and two children are among the more than 2500 people on board all waiting just outside sydney harbor. the weather too dangerous to enter the port. >> this is the first time i've ever refused entry to a cruise ship. >> the storm is sweeping away homes and roads, ripping down power lines, sending trees into cars. but now good news. the system is moving out and authorities are finally reopening the sydney port. passengers roughing out an extra day at sea now ready to step back on dry land. lana zak, abc news, new york. >> back here in the u.s., incredible rescue in california. firefighters pulling a woman from her car after it plunged 150 feet down a hillside. it was embedded in a ditch. rescuers say if not for the ditch, the crash could have been much worse. the driver was the only one in the car. she was treated on the scene and later transported to the hospital for more evaluation. a new jersey community on edge after multiple coyote sightings and at least two attacks. police are warning parents to keep children and small pets inside after the discovery of two dens near a local school. one coyote was captured monday night. police say he may have attacked a man walking his dog. the same coyote may have also attacked the tires of a police car. >> residents in northern minnesota may be wondering if they missed summer maybe?
