beeline for the east coast. it unleashed blinding snow on the texas panhandle. heavy snow forced schools and office buildings to shut down from amarillo to el paso. here's more from abc's ted rowland. >> reporter: millions of americans getting slammed by snow and ice. it's the worst storm of the season for some areas of the south. nearly a foot of snow falling in parts of new mexico and texas. in houston, the fog so thick drivers barely able see. on the roads across the region it is white-knuckle driving. >> it was horrible. i hate this weather. >> as the temperature drops i'll be in the house. >> reporter: as the southern storm moves east it is expected to bring heavy rain to georgia and florida. by friday night, the system is expected to move up the coast to the carolinas brings ice and snow to the northeast. >> it's going to be a big rain producer across the southeast. then as the storm intensifies off the northeast coast of the united states that's when the snow accumulations pick up, especially in southern new england. >> reporter: preparations are underway in many areas, warning drivers about the approaching storm. >> just take it easy and just take your time. >> reporter: ted rowlands, abc news los angeles. the same storm system is dumping heavy rain along the gifl coast and triggering dangerous flooding in texas. a woman had to be rescued after her suv was swept away to a flooded creek. this is near austin. she grabbed to a tree branch and hung on for dear life until emergency crews pulled her to safety. a storm system that pounded texas brings downpours and airport delays to atlanta. thunderstorms in the gulf region rain and snow showers in the great lakes. storms move in to the pacific northwest. fog in california's central valley. >> as far as the temperatures go, 50s seattle, kansas city and dallas 40s. 30s minneapolis, chicago, new york and boston before this weekend's nor'easter. the huge fire that raged through a luxury apartment complex in new jersey has been labelled an accident. investigators say it was ignited by building maintenance workers who wore doing plumbing repairs. the fire was smoldering 24 howevers after it started. everyone made it out alive. some tenants, though are devastated after losing their pets. >> the captain of the fire department had to drag me out of there because i wouldn't leave my cats. >> dragged her out last minute because she wouldn't leave her cats and her cats are dead. >> reporter: 1,000 people have been displaced by the fire. the building is still smoldering this morning, 24 hours after the fire started. two people remain unaccounted for after the mansion fire in maryland. two more bodies were removed what what is left of the house yesterday. investigators would not say whether they were the bodies of adults or children. the medical examiner has not identified the victims. four children ranges in ages 6 to 8 and their grandparents are believed to have died. saudi arabia's king abdullah passed away at the age of 90. his half brother has taken over the leadership role. the white house announced last night vice president biden would lead the u.s. delegation to saudi arabia for the memorial. the mother of one of the jnz hostages held by isis is making a last-minute plea for his life. the mother of the journalist pleaded with the japanese government to save her son. the captors said the two hostages would be killed today unless a $200 million ransom was met. the government spokesperson says japan has been trying to reach hostages -- excuse me, those who are holding the hostages. britain's prince andrew is on the defensive over allegations he had sex with a teenager. he addressed those allegations during a trip to switzerland. >> reporter: an embattled prince andrew under tremendous pressure speaking out about the sex scandal engulfing him. >> i think must and for the record refer to the events that have taken place in the last few weeks. >> reporter: those events allegations in u.s. federal court by virginia roberts. she says she was coerced in to having sex with the prince three times starting when she was 17, all denied by palace officials. >> i just wish to reiterate and reaffirm the statements which have already been made on my behalf by buckingham palace. my focus is on my work. >> reporter: the public focus on this he said/she said dispute and her evidence this photo from 2001 in london. roberts 17 at the time with prince andrew. she said they had sex that night. flight logs that list roberts on private flights to footballs yet. okay. nascar's most recognizable driver said he has one more season left in him. jeff gordon number 24 says this year will be his last in nascar but he won't say he's retiring. the 43-year-old gordon is third on nascar's all-time win list. he's been nascar champion four times since debuting in 1992 and he is widely credited with helping the nascar's appeal to a wider audience. so social media went crazy when tennis star bouchard was asked for and gave a twirl during a post match interview to show off the outfit at the australian open. some are calling the request from a male interviewer sexist and some are asking whether a man would be asked to do the same thing. bouchard called it unexpected and said it was funny. and my coanchor is having tourette's on the anchor
