deadly mudslides. people, children, and animals getting out any way they can. the incredible images coming in. and good evening. thanks for joining us on this saturday. i'm tom llamas. and we begin tonight with that deadly chaos at one of europe's busiest airports. french military opening fire on this man, killing him. they say he tackled a female soldier, then tried to seize an assault rifle from her and then took that soldier as a shield. at least 3,000 travelers evacuated from orly airport. hundreds trapped on incoming flights. investigators say this man, a 39-year-old, a suspected islamic terrorist has been on their radar. tonight, what police found at his home, plus his chilling last words and lama hasan on the scene for us in paris. >> reporter: tonight, a city on edge. the chaotic scene unfolding at orly airport in paris. heavily armed special forces and emergency vehicles responding to the attack. 8:30 a.m., a man yelled "i'm here to die for allah" before assaulting a female soldier. violently trying to grab her weapon and use her as a shield. when she broke free of his grasp, two fellow officers opened fire, killing him. his lifeless body seen on this airport surveillance image. this eyewitness said, "we saw people running and heard a boom. people were looking to exit the terminal. this happened really quickly." the airport immediately going into lockdown. flights diverted, more than 3,000 people forced to evacuate. pictures showing travelers walking on the highway. the bomb squad sweeping the airport for explosives, none were found. >> french security forces were quite well prepared, they appeared to be well trained and acted very quickly and professionally. >> reporter: two hours before the chaos erupted at the airport, the suspect allegedly shot an officer with a pellet gun and stole a car. investigators searched his home and say they found a machete, money and cocaine. police confirm the man is 39-year-old french-born ziyed ben belgacem, known to intelligence services as a radicalized muslim. just released from prison in november. last month, a similar attack occurred at the louvre. the country already under its highest alert level after several terror attacks, including last july's deadly truck attack in nice. >> lama joins us live from outside that paris airport. you mentioned in your story, france is on its highest terror alert level. what's the mood like out on the streets? >> well people here are still coming to terms with another attack on french soil. tonight, tom, the flights here at the airport have resumed. make no mistake w 10,000 army officers patrolling the streets in france every day this is a country under a continuing state of emergency. tom? >> a heightened sense of alert. no doubt. lama, no doubt. now to the nationwide man hunt here at home in a possible abduction case. a teacher accused of kidnapping a teenaged student. the amber alert so disturbing to many parents and educators. abc's eva pilgrim has the latest on this developing story. >> reporter: tonight, the frantic search for that missing tennessee teen and her former teacher. authorities saying the student is in imminent danger. the teacher's own wife, going before cameras, with a desperate plea. >> let me speak directly to my husband. tad, this is not you. >> reporter: authorities say 50-year-old tad cummins was a health science teacher at 15-year-old elizabeth thomas' high school. tonight, cummins accused of having an inappropriate relationship with the teen. now, one of tennessee's ten most wanted. authorities extending the amber alert nationwide. the teen missing since monday. >> we have no idea where these individuals could be right now. this is a dire situation for this young girl. >> reporter: investigators say around 7:30 a.m. monday, a friend dropped thomas off at a shoney's in columbia, tennessee. shortly after, security video shows cummins filling up his silver nissan rogue suv at a nearby shell gas station. hours later, thomas is considered missing. detectives say monday afternoon the pair were tracked in decatur, alabama. since then, their trail has gone cold. >> please do the right thing and turn yourself into the police and bring beth home. >> reporter: authorities say cummins is carrying two handguns and warned the two may have changed their appearance since they were last seen. tom. >> eva pilgrim for us tonight. eva, thank you so much. next to that deadly confrontation between police and apparently unarmed man, all of it streaming live on facebook. here's abc's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: tonight posted on facebook -- sheriff's deputies shooting a man as he streams video live from his suv. the scene playing out in memphis, tennessee. you can hear rodney hess repeatedly ask for superior officers. >> i would like the higher commands. i'd like the higher commands to come out. >> reporter: at least one deputy firing through the windshield. hess airlifted to a hospital where he later died. it's one of two live posts. the first showing the 36-year-old getting in and out of his vehicle. standing in an off-ramp as drivers dodge him. one offering assistance. >> you have someone coming to help you? >> no, i'm good. i'll be okay. >> reporter: hess then parks in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. deputies arriving. in a statement, investigators say hess was acting erratic and refusing officer commands. allegedly using his vehicle to try and strike deputies. footage not captured on hess' feed. people who say they are the man's relatives, asking witnesses to come forward -- >> we just pray that justice will be served. >> reporter: investigators saying the use of force was justified. in speaking with family's spokesperson, they won't confirm whether hess had a history of mental illness. tom. >> adrienne, thank you. let's turn now to politics. president trump firing off a new tweet this morning in the aftermath of that one-on-one meeting with the germany's leader in oval office. the president now in mar-a-lago. abc's david wright is in west palm beach. >> reporter: president trump took to twitter to set the record straight. despite what you've heard from the fake news i had a great meeting, he tweeted. nevertheless, germany owes vast sums of money to nato and the united states must be paid more for the powerful and very expense defense it provides to germany. the issue came up yesterday and merkel agreed to increase the defense spending. trump applaudd that. >> i want to thank the chancellor for her leadership in supporting nato. >> reporter: a german reporter asked trump about his twitter rants. >> from time to time, tweets that you regret? >> very seldom. >> very seldom. very seldom. >> reporter: today, the president is in palm beach with his family. vice president mike pence is also in florida, pushing the republican health care plan. >> and we're going to continue to work with members of congress to improve this bill. >> reporter: about 22 republican congress members have yet to sign on, which could doom the bill. joni ernst got booed. >> the affordable care act as it is right now is you unsustainable. unsustainable. >> reporter: but plenty of don't like the replacement? >> reporter: that's right, james comey is set to appear monday in front of the house intelligence committee. it's going to be a blockbuster. the two big issues -- those wiretapping claims and the question of whether there's any proof about collusion between the trump campaign and the russians. >> david, thank you very much. another note tonight, recent another breach. press secretary sean spicer said someone jumped the bike rack on pennsylvania avenue but didn't make it on the grounds. the incident come s a week after a man penetrating a fence, roaming white house ground for 60 minutes. abc news has learned that the alleged suspect was detected hours outside the breach. to beijing now, where rex tillerson, secretary of state, is wrapping up his first trip to asia. representing the u.s. tillerson arrived in china for a face to face talks on north korea's nuclear program and other matters as well. he responded to a question from our bob woodruff who has this report from there tonight. >> reporter: today, in beijing, secretary of state rex tillerson continued to sound the alarm bell about north korea's nuclear capabilities after raising the possibility of a pre-emptive military strike. exactly, where is the red line on this, what would cause this to happen do you think? >> we share a common view and a sense that tensions on the peninsula are quite high right now, and that things have reached a rather dangerous level. >> reporter: tillerson added that he was intent to avoid conflict, who urged the u.s. to stay cool-headed. and a day after the former exxonmobil ceo visited one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world, snapping a photo of the concrete block that separates north and south korea. as well as offering that dire warning. >> let me be very clear. the policy of strategic patience has ended. all options are on the table. >> reporter: north korea has held two series of ballistic missile tests since president trump took office. those missiles not yet capable of reaching the u.s., but they are a threat to the region, including more than 80,000 u.s. troops stationed in south korea and japan. later today, secretary tillerson will be meeting with china's president xi jinping. a lot of things to talk about, but north korea is certainly at the top of the list, tom?
