Tonight, authorities in louisiana making it clear, they do not believe there are other gunmen are on the loose. But they are investigating whether or not anyone else knew about this. Reporter tonight, baton rouge reeling after a man opened fire at a gas station. A lady came up and said there was a subject walking with a coat and an Assault Rifle out here behind the store. Reporter just after 8 30 this morning, reports of a man dressed in all black with a rifle just a mile from state police headquarters. Brady vancel was on his way to work. When i looked over to the right there was a man running in my direction away from the body with an Assault Rifle in his hand. As soon as we got eye contact at one another, he stopped in his tracks and turned around and started sprinting the other way. Reporter police cars speeding to the scene, s. W. A. T. Teams moving in. Shots fired officer down shots fired officer down ive got a city officer down shots fired i dont know where the subjects shooting from reporter the horror, captured on camera from this car, outside the convenience store. Bullets flying as the suspect draws police into a gun battle. Police scanner traffic, capturing the chaos as officers are shot. Ive got two down back here, two down deputy down, deputy down reporter then, officers locate and kill the suspected gunman. Weve got eyes on him. Hes behind that transformer, appears to be on the phone. At this point it appears the scene is secure. Were going to have a robot come and check him out. Reporter at first, Law Enforcement not sure if the gunman acted alone, urging residents to stay indoors, choppers swirling overhead. There was a shooting. We believe there are multiple suspects. One suspect is deceased, multiple officers were shot. We do have some that have been killed. Thats what i know for sure right now. Reporter when its all over, three officers killed, three more injured, one of those in critical condition. Late today, authorities reassuring residents. We do not believe or do we have any other shooter held up in any other area in the baton rouge area. Reporter tonight officials in baton rouge asking for prayers. Until we come together as a nation, as a people, to heal as a people if we dont do that and this madness continues, we will surely perish as a people. And eva is with us live tonight. Initially, they were concerned there could be more than one shooter, but they do believe he was a lone gunman . Reporter thats right. And of course, the question, who was this lone gunman, what do we know about his motive . We have just learned his identity tonight. Heres brian ross. Reporter federal Law Enforcement officials identified the shooter as 29yearold gavin eugene long, an africanamerican from kansas city. Officers engaged the subject, and he ultimately died at the scene. Reporter police say it appeared to be a wellplanned ambush. He had a mask on. One subject. All black. Carrying a. R. Reporter in the wake of the Police Shooting of alton sterling in baton rouge, and then the deadly attack on police in dallas by a man who wanted to kill everything blue that moves, Law Enforcement in baton rouge had been put on alert last week by the fbi and Homeland Security for a possible attack. These threats are very viable and theyre very real. Reporter this fbi bulletin from its new orleans office, obtained by abc news, showed images from social media and warned, multiple groups are calling for or planning riots and or violence against Law Enforcement in baton rouge, louisiana, and shreveport, louisiana. Ive been involved in Law Enforcement for over 30 years. I have never seen an environment this dangerous and this polarized as it relates to police in this country. And brian ross is with us here tonight. Looking at both cases in dallas and baton rouge, it would appear both gunmen had military backgrounds. Thats right. Its not lost on Law Enforcement officers that they have a target on their backs. Just ten days ago, the ambush in dallas. Protesters running as snipers take aim at officers. Five officers losing their lives. Police officers that did not return home from work. Reporter it was just three days ago that president obama sat down for a National Town hall meeting on policing and race. We have to have police that are respected, and we have to recognize the fear their families go through every time they walk out that door. Reporter tonight, Law Enforcement sources tell abc news theyre facing perhaps the most volatile and complicated security picture in recent memory. Those dump trucks are there to stop cars, trucks, or anything else from getting access to crowds. There are thousands of Police Officers in this city, including many on bikes, be flexible to to get anywhere quickly. And there are cameras throughout the city to give complete situational awareness. All of this taking place in ohio, an open carry state. Where citizens are allowed to carry guns in public spaces without a permit. Theres a bushmaster predator.
