Break open the debate over immigration and customs enforcement the immigration system for years has failed Mad Catz filling in for Amy Walter and this hour we put the federal agency known as ice under a microscope we hear directly from immigrants whose lives have been up ended by ice . On my wife and I don't want to live in we have on the 11th jacket available for people who want to go out right now knowing that it could not be like . Not everybody can take them and to examine the history of immigration policy in this country for the Europeans it's the open door for Asians it's the closed door for Mexicans it's a free fall thing to want to take away we'll be right back after these headlines. News. Every. Inmate at County Jail be monitored and recorded there are I mean can you hear me Ok. Eric Juric is 38 years old and from Slovakia he's been in the United States for almost 2 years but for more than half of that time he's been in immigration detention what were the circumstances behind you getting picked up by ice they came to my apartment a look at ice Immigration and Customs Enforcement the one federal agency tasked with finding and removing immigrants in violation of immigration laws now President Trump is putting the agency's size and strength to the test under this administration I says ramped up in Foresman this year arrests of undocumented immigrants are up 17 percent and removals from the country are up about 9 percent and I see engines aren't just targeting immigrants who've committed violent crimes thousands of immigrants currently languishing in immigration detention have committed no crime other than being here without proper documentation. In my regular job I'm a reporter for w. N.y.c. And I've been covering the impact of the ramped up immigration enforcement I've spent some time visiting the detention centers where immigrants from New York are held most end up in to county jails in New Jersey that have lucrative detention contracts with ice so many immigrants are getting locked up that the majority of the population of these 2 jails are now ice detainees not locally charged criminals I've been especially interested in the Bergen County Jail where detainees complain of poor living standards the sheriff who runs the jail recently resigned after we aired a secret recording of him making a series of racist comments. Marijuana sanctuary state it talk about the success that the star. 3rd criminal justice we saw. This through was the last Will they or small to marijuana do this today and the more about it. And there's one other thing about the Bergen County job that caught my attention under that Sheriff immigrants even those charged with no other crime other than locking documents are forbidden from touching hugging and kissing their loved ones who visit that's unusual and it's how I 1st started talking to Erik Juric when his wife visits he must look at her through a glass partition he's been detained to Bergen County jail for nearly a year now I overstayed my reason and that's why I am here. To end them for 2016. Days if you have a program to ask me to stay. And I stayed maybe. 8 months and. In 2007 when I picked me up from my house and I'm here I'm right I want to be reaching out to you so let me go this straight you've spend most of your time in the United States in jail. I know that I know that may come over from the jail that the government said that you had your lawyer had requested a couple of delays is that accurate they they've arrested now I had only the marketing that January 30th that's any Then on March 8th I went for the court to our exchange and my lawyer she submitted a title but the judge didn't show up so we couldn't do anything and because on that day was the snowstorm that they gave me on at the court in 4 months later in July 9th and it's July 9th they called me like 4 o'clock and when I went there the judge was saying that she doesn't have the time for me because it was too late so she to schedule me again for September 10th and September 10th when I supposed to go for the court that was the Jewish holiday did you get for them. I mean the paperwork that showed up that day they had a problem with the Internet so they couldn't you know they couldn't make that we do well so they are schedule me again for a couple 11 on the campaign 11 there was an other another time happened that there was no internet connection because they did schedule me again for general area or you have 30 seconds remaining. Ice no longer allows immigrant detainees here to see a judge in person they conduct all hearings from this jail by a one video conferencing system the 2 more video booths will soon be added according to the sheriff's office George next hearing is scheduled for January he's seeking asylum based on discrimination he says he faced in Slovakia due to the color of his skin and he's hoping to get permanent residency through his wife who's a u.s. Citizen jury because no other criminal record but a source in federal government told me that he does have an arrest warrant for financial crime back in full back yet that may have gotten him on ice his radar but it's not part of the case against him and jerk attributed it all to a business dispute with his ex-wife that. His inability to fight the charges because he's been locked up for so long after the time expired for our 1st call from the jail we were able to get your back on the phone and I asked him to describe his unit and his cell to me. I read in the newspaper that the government face for the child nice money like $150.00 a day but I don't see that money over here nothing for you know these like a $64.00 people and we sharing like 1000 square feet now and these old people are here it's like no enough chairs for everybody you know so most of the time during the day it looks like on Penn Station you know like people waiting for the train you know nobody knows what to do because there's just for space for everybody so just walk like in the cage so you say you pass the time by walking back and forth from one end of the unit to the other yeah yeah that's the that's the that's the only option like you know either you need to like air the shape of the square so that's the only thing you can like exercise or something we have a yard like a once one hour a day and the art is like even smaller to another unit so it's hard to play or something or exercise or something and especially in the winter we have only 11 jacket every level for $64.00 people so you have to be kind of chosen if you're going to Few want to go outside and you know exercise because now that he's like a really cold you know not everybody can take that call. I understand there's also some medical issues with your with your teeth can you explain what the medical conditions are like in there so my program started in February when I lost my feeling in my tooth and since that time I was due to the dentist like maybe 5 times and every time he was saying to succeed outside because I have a root canal but he just said that without like taking the x. Ray or something you know in that I would dentists over here he doesn't have a like a electric tools. He has on the basic tools like that leave a meter and you know and he's mostly just using the hands you know so and the only option is to when you have a tooth ache it's like a he can take it out you know but in my case they were saying I have a big root canal and I think that was infected and my pain started like 2 weeks ago like the really big one so 2 weeks ago more than 2 weeks ago I found out that I have a like a really big headache and also my head shot a fair. Between my right ear and my right eye the bump Besides like it discipline so I got scared and also I start thinking of losing the sight on the right eye so you know I reported right away so they took me to the emergency room to emergency hospital outside emergency doctor was saying that it might be from the top maybe from the I might be from the headache I mean from the brain so we are commanded to easy just to see at least that since that time my pennies are all over 2 weeks and they just freed me with pain killers and they never called me for specialists I'd rather see call every day but it doesn't have to in right now as we speak yeah I'm glad they didn't give me the painkiller so I had voted myself from the commissary ibuprofen but it's not strong enough you're also concerned that there are some basics that are in short supply at the jail things that many of us on the outside wouldn't necessarily even think about being being an issue or a problem like when blankets and razors. With a blanket since I've been here almost 20 years they change the blanket they wash them only twice which is like really for you now and especially in the condition like we're leaving here I don't know how they do the laundry but the quotes are coming you know cholera and last time I remember oh and you still are saying that there. They want to cultivate their team upstate was down with the quote so it's just feel so you know and from that point you know many people they have a like it rushes you know scratching and each ink and it's just not that I'm just like like I said the beginning I'm just wondering where all this money goes you know I've been in you know almost one year but do you know penny spent a novel you know it when like it was just simple basic thinks like you have to ask and thank you for the chair for the toilet paper or for the razors razors are not any of those they would just say you know Dave we have a like 10 left or you know something like that it's just. It's just like that do you think that you'll ever get out of there do you wonder if you're ever going to be able to get out of there or are you hopeful yeah of course I have a big faith in God and I have a still dream that I can get justice here in America and I understand that I made a mistake I you know I I always did my reason but also I paid for my mistake I have only gotten my my my life out that nothing else I lost everything I lost money I lost I lost my apartment I lost my car I thought I don't care I'm still alive you know and. I believe that one day I walked on the streets in New York because I'm the criminal you know thank you so much for they care all right already thank you but I think as of next week Eric Juric will have spent one year at the Bergen County jail without having the chance to argue the merits of his case before a judge the jail bills ice and federal taxpayers $110.00 for each day he's there the sheriff in Bergen County is new he was recently elected to replace the sheriff who resigned after making racist comments the response man the new sheriff denied Eric's allegations about the conditions at the jail he says there's enough seating to accommodate detainees and plenty of coats. Treason recreational activities to go around he is however reviewing the policy that forbids the teen is from hugging their spouses and kids who visit. Coming up our look at ice continues all hour we talk about how racism has infected immigration policy in the u.s. From the very beginning the original immigrants to the United States were English people who were coming to settle steal take land from a native population plus a look at the threats to immigrants with legal standing to stop the car ever to. End the hardline view from a retired agent with the Immigration and Naturalization Service I call the failure by design I blame both political parties the immigration laws are designed to keep out criminals and aliens who would take the jobs of Americans all of that coming your way not cats in for Amy Walter and this is the take away the take away is supported by staples with print and marketing solutions for business including color copies and presentations booklets and manuals and banners more at Staples stores are Staples dot com staples and progressive insurance offering its home called explore designed to provide information about available home insurance options in one place more information a progressive dot com. Cats in for Amy Walter today on the takeaway and all this hour we're exploring how immigration laws are enforced in this country even Chomsky is a professor of history and a coordinator of Latin American studies at Salem State University she walks us through the history of American immigration and how from the very beginning it was racialized this is a settler colonial society this means that the United States is a country founded of by and for white settler colonizers and the original immigrants to the United States were English people who were coming to settle steal take land from a native population so because this country was founded by the colonisers that ended up affecting how immigration policy in the views toward immigrants going forward for the next several centuries Absolutely and one of their goals in fact and you see it right in the Declaration of Independence was to bring in more white immigrants only white people can be citizens of course of the new country how easy was it's a naturalized if you are white Can you show up in your citizen there are no restrictions on entry so if you're white you just show up and you're here and the restrictions on citizenship are all racial restrictions that as black people cannot be citizens native Americans cannot be citizens white people all you have to do is arrive here and in 2 years you become a citizen period it's really not until aft
