Romona tonight a trooper tragedy. Kenneth valez was days away from retiring, but the state Highway Patrolman was struck and killed on i90 this afternoon while he was outside of his cruiser. Reaction to the troopers death has been coming in from all across the state. The attorney general tweeted his condolences to the family of Kenneth Valez saying this they tweeted this picture in honor of trooper valez. The 4yearold leaves behind three children and tonight we are learning more about just who trooper valez was. Harry boomer is getting those answers. Reporter most of us slow down and move over when we see a trooper on the side of the road conducting a traffic stop. That didnt happen today. Now ohio state trooper Kenneth Valez is dead. He has been a family friend. He is the son. Reporter retired trooper aj torres worked with Kenneth Valez for 15 years. He spent hours at metro hoping and praying his longtime friend would pull through. Sadly that didnt happen. Torres says his friend will be missed. An awesome guy. Couldnt ask for a better guy. Reporter his death hit fellow troopers very hard. They gathered at metro hugging and supporting each other trooper valez is a huge loss. Now he is gone at the young age of 48 leaving three children behind. Tonight a somber silence when his fellow trooperses drove his body from metro in an honor guard. With my family and with the community i cooperate ask for a birr person. He has a son overseas that is coming now. He is on his way back. Reporter his son is an air Traffic Controller in the air force and he is stationed in korea. It is going to be a long, heartbreaking flight home. Since the ohio state Highway Patrol was founded, there were 39 troopers killed in the line of duty as well as five the last trooper killed while on duty was this november of 2001 in Franklin County. Before the vigil, stacys son kurt stanley spent time with reporter kurt and his family still struggling with the questions of why. I dont know, it is just weird because like when all this happened like, you know, you want to call somebody and talk to somebody, and the first person i thought of was my mom. I couldnt even talk to her. The family wants you to know stacy was a good mother and a grandmother. She was a loving person and she was kind. She made you smile. She felt like she needed to give him a ride home and give him a hand. He took her life for nothing just because he felt like it.
