thank you so much for joining us. i'm brian duffy. >> tia: i'm tia ewing. meteorologist sam roberts is in the first alert weather center with a forecast with much colder temps than we've seen lately. this weekend, sam, people better bundle up. >> yeah. if you've been shopping and maybe found a great deal on a winter coat because there's on sale, you've been itching to wear the kothe coat, this is a perfect weekend to do so. we start off with a live look over downtown cleveland. there's terminal tower in the background. it's beautiful outside. 39 is our current temperature, so it's chillier than it has been the last couple of mornings, but you know, it's not frigid. i mean, we can make it. we'll be all right. just a little chilly. last three hours problem-free. no rain, no snow, absolutely nothing going on. i thought i would check the visibilities just in case we wanted to show you how clear it is out there. perfect tens across the board. no fog, no rain. there is absolutely nothing to stand in your way on your way into work, and, of course, it's friday. i hope you have an easy drive in. temperature-wise we're in the 30s, so you may need to turn the heater on. we have the green light for that drive in to work, at least in terms of the weather. john will check traffic for us in just a minutes. evening commute looks smooth as well. we have a blend of sun and clouds and maybe a stray shower or sprinkle, but the chance is like minuscule. it is so small, and we'll be in the mid-40s later on dropping back to about 43 by 6:00. i will take a look at the weekend in a few minutes and i want to look ahead really far ahead to easter. we'll do that, too, coming up in the next weather hit. john. >> john: well, an ease kwi go so far. head down to the lakefront and discover this is the picture we have access to, and things are moving along smoothly there. burke lakefront airport is off on the right side of the screen and city on the left. they're moving along fine heading twaurd towards dead man's curve. the folks getting off at east 30th, aren't any right now, are down in the lower right hand corner of the screen. outbound traffic is the headlights you see. it's our ivery tower, terminal tour in its classic incandescent. west side traffic is moving fine off the jennings going 45 miles per hour, which for the merge onto the jennings is a good speed. there. back in a few with an update. right now here's tia. >> tia: there are new developments into the mysterious death of a 22-year-old fremont ago. in a facebook post, the sister group of investigators have been looking into his death for the last eight months. barron is believed to have died after accidentally falling down a trash chute at progressive field during at concert back in july of 2014. his body was found in a lorain landfill days later. now, barron's family along with private investigators are offering a reward for any new information on what may have happened to cory. >> brian: this morning we are waiting to hear back from cleveland police about how many arrests they made during the st. patrick's day festivities, but we do know there were no major incidents throughout the holiday celebration. that's good news. it was all hands on deck for cleveland police, and people around town, well, they noticed. >> we talked about it amongst our friends. >> yes, we did. yes, we did. >> we noticed a lot more than normal. >> more than enough. it's good. i feel safe. >> brian: last year police made 46 arrests on st. patrick's day. we'll let you know. look for them first on the cleveland 19 mobile app. >> tia: an exciting day for nearly 200 students at case western reserve university. it's match day is the day med students find out where they spend the next three to seven years as a resident physician. that's really good. >> brian: it's very exciting. we always get videos of it. the doctors-to-be are fired up. >> tia: a group of clevelanders are climbing to the top of mount kilimanjaro to raise money for a local nonprofit organization. >> brian: that's in tanzania. it's the tallest mountain in africa. 19,000 feet. about 25,000 people we are year attempt to climb it. nichole vrsansky has more on the local journey to reach the peak. >> nichole: there have been workout and training sessions. the fund-raising pages are up, and now those involved in the big climb are trying to get the word out about the real mission. >> i just felt like this is what i was supposed to do. >> nichole: danielle leonard is paying it forward by climbing 19,000 feet to the top of mount kill imanjaro with 14 other clevelanders this september. >> it's bigger than me, any fear or shame i feel or anything. this isn't about me. >> nichole: the climb is about hope center. leonard struggled with drug addiction, an abusive parent. the nonprofit organization still in early stages aims to help people like her find hope. chc partners with other organizations to provide counseling, financial support to hundreds in need across the cleveland area. >> they need help because they don't enough food to eat or can't pay their bills. they donated 1,000 book bags filled with supplies and free haircuts for the first day of class. it was to give single parents a break. >> it's dear to my heart. it's how i was raised. it's the help of other people that helped us sustain but enjoy the life we had. >> nichole: each of the 15 climbers and trying to raise $20,000 for the cleveland hope center. a portion of the donations fund the trip itself. >> that's over $200,000 that we hope to collect to gather together that money to make a difference in our city. >> our shirts say "hope is rising." our hope is this. as we climb the mount and we rise to the top, hope can also rise in people's lives. >> for leonard climbing to the top is about looking back, seeing how much she has overcome. >> probably drop to my knees and thank god, i mean, that i've come this far, look back behind me and kind of see the path that mountain. >> nichole: such an amazing effort. on ononif i could do it. kill imanjaro is considered not technically a difficult climb, but the biggest problem is the quick elevation changes. 75% of climbers get sick because their bodies don't adjust in time to those elevation changes. brian, tia. >> brian: let's hope they make it, and i hope they reach their goal of 200,000 bucks. that would be great. after a week packed with unseasonably warm weather, we're in for a bit of a reality check this weekend, sam. >> samantha: we are. we're headed for the 30s. our high temperatures in the 30s all weekend long. you'd never know, right, that opening day is 17 days away. a harbin engineer of spring, but it won't feel spring-like at all this weekend. returns whether we come back. >> tia: nasa will launch a record-setting space mission today. >> brian: next what a nun needed so badly that police say pennsylvania police are charging a nun for shoplifting from a outlet store. the sister stole $23 worth of food and toiletries, and if she pleads guilty, she will only have to pay a fine. a record-setting space mission is set to begin today he's being launched to the international space station today for a six-month long expedition. during that time, williams will pass astronaut scott kelly for most days spent in space. >> brian: big change could be coming to progressive field. chicago just became the fourth city with a major league baseball team to ban chewing tobacco at stadiums. this isn't just for fans but players. no word yet if this will happen in cleveland, but there's growing movement demanding to put an end to chewing tobacco in the big leagues. 11th seeded gonzaga upset 6th seeded seton hall last night. out of the 16 games, seven of them are upset winners. the 13 million brackets submitted nationwide, only 14,525 are still perfect. that's .1%. here's the current standings for the morning show bracket a three-way tie for first. dave graska is a photog. we missed on five games and we're all tied for fourth place. it was one day and 16 games. a lot can change. q., well he picked usc because he graduated from there. see you later, q. you're out, buddy. i don't know what to tell you. >> tia: i don't know what i was doing, anyway. you dpie guys know what you're doing. >> brian: a little bit. i don't follow college basketball isasmuch as i used to. >> samantha: it's so hard. this time of year, that's why they call it march madness. >> brian: you have to do it and be involved, because everybody is. it's fun to be part of the show, right? >> samantha: yes. basketball season, it feels like basketball season out there, it's cold. 39 in cleveland. good morning in akron/canton at into the upper 20s. now, our average low for this time of the year is actually around 30, so technically we're above average, but it's been so mild all week i think this may come as a shock to the system to you. along the lakefront we're not to bad. 40 at euclid and lakewood at 42 and 39 in parma and good morning in strongsville. we check in at about 37 degrees. i'll help you plan your day now that you know what to expect when you step out the door. today. lunchtime, low to mid-40s, so a little cooler than it was yesterday. a little on the breezy side as well, but not quite as blustery as we were yesterday. 46 for the high temperature today. it will happen around 2:00 or 3:00. i i'm sure as you were in the car line had the windows down but today not as warmer but 11 degrees cooler. two during the afternoon. that was your day planner for cleveland. look at akron. mid-30s late in the morning and 46 at lunchtime and highs for akron, i think we may get closer to that 50-degree mark. dover and new philly, all points to the south close to 50 today. like the rest of the area, little chance for a shower or two this afternoon. it's very dry outside. john and i were just talking about this. it's like desert dry. maybe you feel you need a little more lotion or chapstick. i don't think much makes it down to the ground, but i can't rule out a couple of of stray showers this afternoon. tonight akron/canton headed for the mid-20s and along the lake a little warmer, upper 20s and partly to mostly cloudy and definitely chillier than it's been much of the week. the cooler weather sticking around through the weekend. look at the weekend forecast here. 38 on saturday, 39 on your sunday. we'll have a few snowshowers looks great and then sunday a few light snowshowers in the morning. little to nothing in the way of accumulation. lake-effect snowshowers on your monday and upper 30s so another chilly day there. we get warmer on tuesday. 49 degrees, and tuesday is going to be beautiful but rain will move in at night, and that rain will hang around for wednesday. look at this change, too. monday, 39 degrees. and then by wednesday we're in the low 60s. it's crazy, right? this is spring. these big temperature swings, and i promised you, by the way, a look at easter. i told you we'd probably dry out for thursday. rainy weather on good friday. keep in mind a lot can change between now and then. we have to keep a close eye on it. for now friday looks rainy and saturday looks dry and easter looks okay. we're still several days out, so i want to keep you updated as things change if they do. john. feel for what's coming down the pipe. there's always changes in the weather. that keeps weather folks in business. 90 and west 86th looking good. as you head out of town, no problems there. look at a camera shot of the 480, traffic headed east, it's building volume a little bit. no surprise. 6:18 in the morning, and yeah, folks headed off towards parma, ridge road, state road, teetman beyond that. in and out on 67 and so far easy go. i get a report about accidents and fires and broken-downs and disableds and congestion and all that looking good. 43 miles per hour getting on the jennings, and that's no spry. typically it's slow there, but that speed is pretty acceptable especially for this hour. let's fly into town. ilts a good day for a flight. there's good flies weather and all is well. friday morning commute. i'll be back in a few with an update. i hope it's as good. right now, tia and brian. >> tia: time is 6:18. northeast ohio is well-represented this weekend at the state high school basketball championship. >> brian: got that right. next, why seaworld won't look the same. a major change is coming to the >> tia: oh, it looks so beautiful out there. the hustle and bustle and cars and buses on the road this morning. 6:22 on your friday. i say it like that because who doesn't love a friday, right? we look in the area of progressive field. 17 days until opening day. that's when our team, the cleveland indians, take on the boston red sox. they're going down, of course. we do know that just not too long ago the indians signed outfielder marlin bird to the squad. a bombshell announcement the company says it will not add new killer whales to the parks. a lot of people are happy about this. seaworld says the current orcas will live out their days and the program will be phased out. for decades seaworld has been criticized for the killer whale captivity. now it will focus more on animal rescue and rehabilitation. if you want perch for dinner tonight, you might be out of luck on this friday. a shortage of lake erie yellow perch is making it hard for nonprofit fish fries to get their hands on this favorite dish. many restaurants should still have perch. the fish suppliers say the shortage is due to an increase in demand. >> brian: we have local teams who have already moved on to the state championship games in columbus. lebron james' alma mater beat cincinnati aiken. a huge day for st. v's porting 27 on the day. graves had a 20-point day, 23 to the fighting irish win 85-67. they play for the state title on saturday. the st. joseph vikings head back to the state title game for the fourth year in a row. they dominated lynchburg clay. jerry higgins had a nice day. 16 he scored, 12 in the fourth quarter. vikings win huge 81-64. they play for the state title on saturday. i'm going to mention this. i did go to st. joe's, very proud of that. the vikings are the first team since lebron james led the fighting irish to go to the state championship game four years in a row. it's been donald only twice. lebron's team and the mighty vibings vibings at st. joe. 10 10:45 time for the tip-off. >> tia: sam, bring out the hat >> samantha: i know. it's so chilly out there this morning, but it will get a lot colder into the weekend. remember yesterday? wasn't it nice? we hit 57. today only 46. that's pretty much average for this time of year, but we're about to go below average all weekend long. we'll talk about it after the break. >> john: sam, thanks. if ohio governor john kasich thinks his next primary win may come in pennsylvania, why, we ask, is he spending the weekend >> brian: well, he's considered one of the smallest babies ever born, and now he continues to beat the odds. >> tia: we tell you about a local charity motivating a group of clevelanders to climb mt. kilimanjaro. >> brian: very talented kids take the stage this weekend in downtown cleveland. it's friday. we made to friday, march 18th. we made it through st. patrick's day. we were thrilled to see you all at the parade yesterday. we enjoyed that very much. >> tia: we did. good morning. the parade was a lot of fun. so many people out there. they were having a great time. a little spicy. meteorologist sam roberts is in the first alert weather center with the forecast that includes much colder temperatures. i think we kind of saw a change happening yesterday with the wind. it was whipping. hold onto your hair. hold onto your hat and everything out there. >> samantha: it's going to be breezy, but yesterday, man, it was so windy at the parade and really everywhere. today just a breezy day. let's go outside and show you what's happening in downtown cleveland. good morning to you and good morning to all the viewers on facebook. we're live streaming if you follow the "cleveland 19 news" facebook page. you can catch us on tv and right there on facebook. 39 is the current temperature in cleveland. this is like the chilliest morning of the week, right? 37 in akron. 38 in canton, mansfield is 41. in sandusky we're in the upper 30s. notice everyone is reporting a mostly scleer sky. we have a little cloudiness towards ashtabula county, but for the most part once that sun comes up you will see tons of sunshine. no rain or snow out there right now. i'm closely watching our next weather-maker, and that's a front that's off to our north draped right across the great lakes. focus for a stray shower or two later today as it drops off to the south. but the problem is the moisture outside is super limited, so it's going to be really hard to squeeze out any rain from the atmosphere. so if you're working outside today, i don't want you to hear that chance for showers and think, oh, man, it's not a productive day. for any outdoor work today it will be super productive, a blend of suns sun and clouds and a little breezy and on the windy side. not quite as windy as it was yesterday. i'm not sure where the 57 high is coming from. we are headed for the mid-40s later today. let's go to john's graphics really quick to get that off the screen. again, 46 is your high temperature today. >> john: you know, on mine it threw me for a loop, too. it was too much st. patrick's day celebration. it comes but once a year, and you can see that's near brattenall. things are moving along smoothly here. this is 77 inbound, and oh, my goodness, yeah, that's what i said. i was having trouble with the computer. let me get this up for you. there are really no problems out there on the roadways. we have no accidents, no broken-downs. we have no fires. we had a couple of those earlier this week, and none of that is going on now. there we go. got the computer back. we take one shot, and then i turn it back to the desk. here it is. yeah. all right. inbound traffic on 77 moving nicely. so far so good. it's friday after all, and the friday after st. patrick's day is usually light. we turn it back to you guys. hope your computers are up to par. >> brian: no major incidents overnight in cleveland, and we wrapped up a calm st. patrick's day. i was out and about after the parade, and it was pretty calm. this morning we wait to get information about a number of -- about the number of arrests no major arrests. when we hear back from cpd, we'll let you know. you can find all of our st. patrick's day-related stories on the home page of cleveland19.com. >> tia: a quick update. ohio governor john kasich's campaign as of right now along with other republican and democratic candidates, he's spending the weekend in utah where both party voters will caucus next tuesday. also on tuesday, democratic voters will caucus in idaho. a new addition to quicken loans arena. cleveland.com says it is getting a new l.e.d. banner. it will stretch the length of 12 football fields along the roof of the q. the cavs are asking the city planning commission to approve the sign sometime this week. this is a good story. it's going to take a lot of work to do it, but they can pull it off. a group of clevelanders are embarking on a big feat this september. they're climbing mount t. kilimanjaro kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in africa. >> brian: give them credit. tough to do. a new nonprofit organization. nichole vrsansky joins us now with a closer look at this charity and who exactly it is helping. >> nichole: it's called the cleveland hope center, and it's the motivation behind this mission. 15 people, most from journey community church in fairview, are climbing mount t. kilimanjaro to raise money for this nonprofit. we wanted to know more specifics. take a look. >> it's a place of peace i can go to all the time. >> nichole: painting has always been therapeutic for cynthia paul. routine bloodwork revealed she had lieu keem ma, aml. >> one of the leukemias that doesn't -- most people don't make it. >> nichole: cynthia was hospitalized for 27 days undergoing treatment. she was working as a care taker in manning. she had insurance but couldn't take a leave of absence. >> i couldn't pay rent, no money. >> nichole: she turned to her church that collected her with the cleveland hope center. >> paid my rent and utilities and helped with my car. >> they tell us the story of their circumstance, what happened and what their needs are. if there's a financial need, we look for the specifics of how to meet that financial need. >> nichole: through an application and interview process, the cleveland hope center works with hundreds of clients, whether they're dealing with cancer, like in cynthia's case, or drug addiction or job loss. the nonprofit networks with other organizations to help people get financial support, counseling, whatever they need to get back on their feet. >> find hope, discover help. when you feel like you're at your breaking point and desperate and all alone, when you feel like there's no where else to turn, go to the cleveland hope center. >> nichole: funding comes strictly from grants and donations, that's why a group of 15 clevelanders is climbing mt. kilimanjaro this september to raise money for the hope center. >> our hope is once we help and be a part of helping someone else's story change. >> nichole: life has come full circle for cynthia. she's one of the lucky ones. her leukemia is in check for now, and she's back to painting but with a new twist. she brings her canvas to the hospital where she had treatments and paints for and talks with patients. >> sometimes it's a cry, it's a hug, it's an encouraging word that i -- that i get to give back in that way. that is so precious to me. >> nichole: such an awesome lady. there's a fund-raiser tonight. cynthia donated that painting to the fwrup for the auction tonight. you can find out more information at cleveland19.com. >> brian: check out annabella who is only 13 but learned to of contortionism. she will take the stage at the fraternity that hosts their talent showcase for kids this sunday. >> i've been performing for three years, and i'm just always honored every time i get to perform with artistically purple and be with mr. merkus all the time. it's like a big family. i was very nervous at first, but once i started to realize try your best, work hard, if you do that, you shouldn't have a problem. >> brian: you can see the show this sunday at tudor arms hotel on carnegie starting at 3:00. tickets are still available at the door. >> tia: i'm hosting that, so it will be fun. it's a kids' talent show. tia loves kids. i don't have any, so i love to be around other people's and send them right on back home. time is 6:37. cooler weather this weekend may have you thinking about catching two around the house, right, q.? >> q.: yeah. if you're looking for something to do this weekend, come down to the cleveland convention center and check out the cleveland home and remodeling expo. maybe come out and look for new ideas on how to renovate your kitchen. listen, this is the place to be. i'll have a behind of scenes look for you coming up in about two minutes. in the meantime, here is sam with your weather forecast. >> samantha: thanks so much, q. this is a great weekend to do things inside. it's going to be a little chilly. we stay below 40 all weekend. right now most of us are below 40. 39 in cleveland, and it's 37 in akron. good morning to you out in ashtabula. our coolest spot this morning at a chilly 29 degrees. we'll take a look at the forecast after the break. >> tia: next, he nearly set a record when he was born, but now this little baby is doing things i have asthma... ...one of many pieces in my life. so when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my long-term control medicine, i talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment. once-daily breo prevents asthma symptoms. breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a long-term asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. breo won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. breo opens up airways to help improve breathing for a full 24 hours. breo contains a type of medicine that increases the risk of death from asthma problems and may increase the risk of hospitalization in children and adolescents. breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on a long-term asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop breo and prescribe a different asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. do not take breo more than prescribed. see your doctor if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. ask your doctor if 24-hour breo could be a missing piece for see if you're eligible for >> brian: good morning. you've heard of the calm before the storm. this is the calm after the storm of st. patrick's day in downtown cleveland. things are settling down and back to normal in downtown today. maybe you got the day off and you're staying home and watching a little basketball. of course, right here on cbs 19 we've got march madness for you beginning right at noon, i believe, today. so that should be a lot of fun. thank you for joining us this morning. 6:42. how about this? you're looking at what doctors believe is one of the smallest babies ever born, and his name he's three months old in this video, which is why he looks like an average newborn. when he was born nathan weighed less than 15 ounces. he was just ten inches long. think about that. amazingly he's now a little healthy baby boy. his mom gave birth just 24 weeks into her pregnancy. >> tia: what can you say about the parade yesterday? beautiful weather, i guess, for the 149th annual st. patrick's day parade. look at q. he had a great time. there's laura. hold the pants up, laura. >> brian: keep your drawers on there. >> tia: i want to say good morning to all the great people out there. a lot of people told us they watch "cleveland 19 news this morning" and we preach that. >> brian: nikki and jeff tanchak joined us. >> samantha: couldn't see me tucked away in the storm chaser out of the wind. >> tia: smart move. it was windy. that's where they told me to stay. i parked right there. i hope you had fun at the parade. it was a great time. literally every 5 feet somebody was like tanchak! >> tia: everybody knows tanchak. >> samantha: i felt like i was with bon jovi or something. people were freaking out. >> tia: therm freaking out. okay. well, it was fun. time now is 6:44. we had such a great time yesterday. it was so good to meet you, if you're watching this morning, and we met you yesterday. if not, well, i hope we meet you one day. thanks for coming out yesterday. beautiful start this morning. here's doppler max, and well, there's nothing on it. it's dry as a bone out there. what happens for the rest of the day? let's break it down and help you get through this friday so we can get right to the weekend. here's futureview. that's also dry this morning, because there's nothing happening outside. it's very quiet. we stop the clock at 9:00 a.m. and here's the clock right above mostly sunny and easy day, right? kind of like yesterday. a little less cloud cover out there in the morning. here's lunchtime. if you're planning to walk to a new restaurant or maybe you're going to have lunch with the kids at school today, beautiful weather there. notice what happens at about 3:00 in the afternoon. we start to see a little more cloud cover pop up as a cold front approaches from our north, and that could spark a shower or two. you see a little green popping up from time to time, but nothing of significance. i don't think we'll see much in the way of rain. the chance is like 5%, but it's not zero. i want to include it in there when you get a front moving through. you should see a shower. friday at 6:00 and a lot of cloudiness out there as we head towards the evening commute. most should get through the evening commute just fine as well. maybe an isolated shower or sprinkle, nothing more. it's 40 at 9:00 in the morning, mid-40s for your highs today. afternoon and we start to drop back. 43 at 6:00. if you have dinner plans, definitely coat weather, but you don't need the umbrella, we stay rain-free tonight. partly to mostly cloudy, and a little breezy as well. we drop to about 28 by early tomorrow morning. it's dwg going to be a chilly weekend. we told you about this all week long, that the weekend was below average. let's delve into it. highs in the upper 30s in the afternoon, mornings in the 20s all weekend. most of tomorrow, if you have outdoor plans, kids have a soccer game or something, you don't get rained on. tomorrow night there is a chance for snowshowers, and some of those may hang around for sunday morning. worship services, you might run into a snowshower in the morning. by the afternoon we should be good to go, and any accumulation will be super light if anything at all. the ground is really warm, so we're not looking at major problems from this. monday we have a weather alert snowshowers during the day, potentially light accumulations here, and then tuesday a break before more rain comes in for wednesday. i don't know about you, john, but i'm excited to go from 39 on monday to 61 on wednesday. >> john: absolutely. the sooner the better really. i mean, after all, it's spring. let's take a look at grant and 77. things move along smoothly there. we get more congested in the usual spots like 480. the eastbound is headed to transportation boulevard and to granger and to the valley view bridge. if we pop over to the other computer, there it is. it's getting a lot more populated, and here we go with the taillights headed off toward parma and points west beyond that. in and out on 77. still looking good. don't know what the -- the flashing lights are popping underneath the bridge. every time i see flashlights it bothers me a bit. they merge onto 71 onto the and down at 23 miles per hour, which isn't bad for 6:47 in the morning. it will get even slower as we make our way through the morning commute. here on the south and west side, 480 and 271 moving along at a good pace for this friday. friday is often quiet, and the day after st. patrick's day is quieter. i'm back in a few with an update. >> tia: thanks, john. the cleveland home and remodeling expo starts today at the i-x center. >> brian: it features a variety of booths and exhibits, and they say they have everything you will need as far as home goods go. cleveland 19's q. mccray joins us now with a look at what the show has to offer. >> q.: i'm your window giving you a look inside the convention center here in downtown cleveland. this is the cleveland home and remodeling expo. listen, there are 275 vendors noon today through sunday giving you all the information you need when it comes to remodeling
