apple to help the f.b.i. unlock a cell phone owned by one of the people responsible for the san bernardino terror attack. the f.b.i. said it tried to unlock the phone themselves for two months without success. the judge's order requires apple to disable a feature that wipes the phone's data after 10 incorrect pass words. that would lift the f.b.i -- that would let them try millions of password combinations without threatening data on the phone. right now apple is refusing to help. >> denise: you think it is simple but dr. brian krupp is a professor at bw and joining us to talk about why apple will not comply. it seems simple to us like the rest of the world. here is the phone and give them the data. it doesn't work that way? >> no. encryption standard that apple applies to this product is made so there is not a back door. it up, it is hard to go back. >> dan: hard to go back for the government, for apple? or anybody can jump in the back door and get any information? >> hard to go back in from policy. once we open this up and how do you say we will take that method away and what if it gets in the wrong hands for malicious intent. >> denise: so you are saying hackers will most likely get ahold of it and do more damage potentially. >> absolutely. we have seen this movie play out before. the information from the government falls into the wrong hands and that can be exploited by malicious users. >> dan: is this apple's attempt at being ethical and saying they want to protect all apple users or is it the hacker thing. >> i think that's part of it from a ethics standpoint and the other thing not to miss out on this, this is apple's brand. they don't put back doors into the products. once they do this, you have to think from a business standpoint what impact it has. >> going forward do you think this could potentially end up changing the industry? will the government come down with new regulations to change the products in the future. >> it's definitely an interesting point to see what happens in this space. if apple does put in a back door and government agencies access the data you would think other companies would fall in line and do the same. it is really an important part in this realm. >> and i am seeing on social media as people talk about this, it is backlash and apple taking a beating saying this is a terrorist investigation and you should absolutely help them. >> right. that's part of the issue. it is not just a small crime. it is a terrorist act that that data and the public opinion will sway towards that. >> all right. hopefully, in this case it would possibly prevent future attacks. so much more to it. thank you for your time, sir. >> thank you, brian. >> jeff: you will get a sense of the drier air especially along the lakeshore. we have sunshine in downtown cleveland and still leftover mainly light snow showers here rolling through geauga, ashtabula county and across the akron-canton area and see this in the next couple of hours and dry the rest of the night. >> clouds will break up with the drier air. that's not such a good thing. it will lead to pretty cold night around here dropping in the single digits. you can see we are at 28 and 30s to the west and 50s in missouri. that's the warmer air coming in on friday. and we are down to 9 degrees in cleveland akron-canton, you are falling to 8 friday but it will come with strong winds. i am expecting wind gusts over 40 miles an hour. not a lot of rain friday. saturday is looking dry and 50. this is the morning high. temperatures could drop during the afternoon and not that much. next system on sunday and that's going to bring us some rain. so alert for friday. and that's going to be because of the winds here. 40mile-an-hour gusts out of the south and sprinkles in the afternoon and look at that. we will start the snow melt warming to 55 degrees and friday night we drop to 47. windy day on saturday and then but there you go. we are falling into the 40s saturday night 40 and thin sunday an alert for rain. 49 will be the high on sunday and then it will turn colder next week. 36 monday and 44 tuesday and we will have to watch an east coast storm wednesday, thursday time frame. we may be impacted by that or could stay to the east of us. we will have to see. >> dan: 55 may be warm enough to have people playing hooky on friday. >> denise: i bet the of two will you go golfing. >> dan: we will be at work. >> denise: if the snow melts fast enough. that daily starbucks habit may be worse for you than you the new study found some flavored coffee drinks contain more sugar than a can of soda, as much as 25-teaspoons per drink. that's three times more sugar than one can of pop and more than three times the maximum adult daily intake recommended by the american heart association. starbucks says it has committed to reduce the added sugar in its indulgent drinks by 25% by the end of 2020. some just taste like pure sugar. >> denise: i'm fine. i get my pike and my cream. that's it. you know? >> dan: there you go. just coffee and a little bit of cream. up next we will go live to south carolina ahead of tonight's republican town hall. >> denise: and the candidates will be answering questions directly from voters. plus should toddlers be screened for autism? why one local doctor disagrees no. >> all right. feazel roof camera west sunset time 6:03. watch out for the sun glare in spots. that's an issue. >> denise: should toddlers be screened for autism? a national panel of primary care experts says no. one local doctor disagrees with this finding. we will tell you why coming up. >> dan: time to talk politics. voters in south carolina are running out of time to make up their decision, to make up their minds in the republican presidential primary which is saturday, and then democrats a week later. >> denise: over the next two nights they will get a chance to hear from the republican candidates directly. ryan nobles is live in tonight's town hall. >> reporter: hey, dan and denise, tonight we will hear from marco rubio, ted cruz and ben carson in tonight's cnn town hall. they will answer questions directly from voters. and it comes at a time when this race in south carolina is getting ugly. the war of words is ramping up. >> i think a great many south carolinians are concerned that donald trump is not prepared to be commander in chief. in a state known for being respectful two candidates on stage wednesday night are no longer a holding back. >> i have been saying for awhile ted will do and say anything to get reelected. >> reporter: marco rubio and ted cruz spent the day hammering each other and what appears to be a fight for second place. polls show donald trump with a wide lead and the frontrunner is spending his time trying to run up the score. >> i have been in business and than cruz. i have never dealt with anybody who lied so much. >> trump is ahead by a lot. there's a pretty big pool of voters who say they will never support him. as a result, cruz and rubio are accusing each other of being like trump. >> that is a result of the fact that both campaigns, the only thing they can do is engage in insults and attacks. >> the cruz and rubio will be battling the stage and they will spend quite a bit of time talking about each other. >> what we have seen in the last few weeks is disturbing and i can't say i have paid that much attention to it. >> in this race it is apparent. >> a fierce battle, something south carolina voters will have to navigate before making a final decision. as we mentioned, tonight cruz, rubio and carson. and tomorrow night down the road trump leading in the polls and cnn starts at 8:00. dan and denise? >> we have to sit back and laugh back and forth tearing apart each candidate and trump and cruise threatening. i will sue you. >> and people think it is childish. a cease and desist letter went out today and explain what happens and where this goes now. >> yeah. you are right, dan. this is kind of the back and forth insider baseball fodder that the average voter doesn't care for. at the core of this issue there's an ad playing in south carolina which attacks donald trump's position on abortion and shows a clip from him on meet the press from quite a long time ago talking about being very pro choice and donald trump claims ted cruz is not giving voters an accurate assessment of where he stands on abortion and sent this letter telling them to take the i am not taking the ad off the air and sue us. we will have to wait and see and it did result in donald trump sending another statement in which he said i may sue you over your canadian birthplace only time will ted, teddy and that's the language in south carolina. >> always interesting with the two. all right. we finally heard from south carolina governor nikki haley and popular in south carolina and finally endorsed marco rubio. how much will that help him? will it give them the boost they need because she is behind in the polls. >> it will be interesting denise and to dan's point with the back and forth over lawsuits and who said what may not matter all that much to voters and this is tanning and i believe wrap their hands around. niki haley, some polls show she has 80% support of republicans the endorsement quite awhile and not only will she put her support behind marco rubio she will go on the campaign trail with him and encourage republicans to vote for him. let's be honest, we are talking about the battle for second place. polls show donald trump with a wide lead. if marco rubio can eclipse ted cruz and come in second, that could be a big boost for his campaign going forward and reshape the conversation going forward about which of these republicans is the best alternative to donald trump going forward. >> dan: maybe a little strategy by governor haley holding onto the endorsement mentioned as a possible vp candidate. >> reporter: i think regardless who she endorsed, many people view her as a strong potential pick for the second slot on the ticket. you know, from what everyone is saying she weighed this decision up until the last minute and got a personal pitch from george w. campaign earlier in the week and it is clear she wants to get behind the winner and she thinks it is marco rubio. >> denise: all right. we will check back with you soon. >> john kasich will make his return tonight. the ohio governor is tote to appear on the late show with stephen colbert. he was on the show in november when colbert grilled the governor on marijuana legalization. you can catch the late show after cleveland 19 news at 11:00 here on cbs 19. >> standing on your box there. >> denise: i am standing on the box there and compared to mr. 6'4" and i have 3-inch heels on. you are a tall man and handsome man as you all tell us. >> jeff: thank you very much, i appreciate it. >> and most loved man giving us 55 degrees on friday. >> jeff: it will melt a lot of snow. you can get back on your bike. we have leftover light snow south and east of cleveland. this is not adding up to much, that disturbance that came through. other spots we are seeing the sunshine now in cleveland. but look, it is pretty cold 25 ashtabula, 28 cleveland and we still have 35 in dover new philly and clouds breaking up. actually, the city skyline will look a lot like this one tonight. still leftover light snow at 7:00 and looks like it is moving out. mostly cloudy at 9:00 and partly cloudy and 16. single digit temperatures for a lot of spots outside of the city limits. and there you see clouds breaking up in downtown cleveland. very cold tonight and the sun will shine tomorrow after the cold start and much, much warmer on friday. it will come with strong winds. this is the next alert day for winds out of the south over 40 miles an hour and that's what will get the temperature up. during the afternoon and we will get ready for a pretty warm weekend as well. sunny to partly cloudy and chilly tomorrow and 33 the temperature. sunny to partly cloudy akron-canton and only around 30 during the afternoon. here is a look at the planner tomorrow. 10 degrees at 7:00 a.m. that's a cold start. but sunshine at lunch. 27 and clouds start to come in and 30 at 5:00 tomorrow and warm tomorrow night and there's 55 on friday. but with windy exploited by malicious users. >> dan: is this apple's attempt at being ethical and saying they want to protect all apple users or is it the hacker thing. >> i think that's part of it from a ethics standpoint and the other thing not to miss out on this, this is apple's brand. they don't put back doors into the products. once they do this, you have to think from a business standpoint what impact it has. >> going forward do you think this could potentially end up changing the industry? will the government come down with new regulations to change the products in the future. >> it's definitely an interesting point to see what happens in this space. if apple does put in a back door and government agencies access the data you would think other companies would fall in line and do the same. it is really an important part in this realm. >> and i am seeing on social media as people talk about this, it is backlash and apple taking a beating saying this is a terrorist investigation and you should absolutely help them. >> right. that's part of the issue. it is not just a small crime. it is a terrorist act that that data and the public opinion will sway towards that. >> all right. nobles is live in tonight's town hall. >> reporter: hey, dan and denise, tonight we will hear from marco rubio, ted cruz and ben carson in tonight's cnn town hall. they will answer questions directly from voters. and it comes at a time when this race in south carolina is getting ugly. the war of words is ramping up. >> i think a great many south carolinians are concerned that donald trump is not prepared to be commander in chief. in a state known for being respectful two candidates on stage wednesday night are no longer a holding back. >> i have been saying for awhile ted will do and say anything to get reelected. >> reporter: marco rubio and ted cruz spent the day hammering each other and what appears to be a fight for second place. polls show donald trump with a wide lead and the frontrunner is spending his time trying to run up the score. >> i have been in business and than cruz. i have never dealt with anybody who lied so much. >> trump is ahead by a lot. there's a pretty big pool of voters who say they will never support him. as a result, cruz and rubio are accusing each other of being like trump. >> that is a result of the fact that both campaigns, the only thing they can do is engage in insults and attacks. >> the cruz and rubio will be battling the stage and they will spend quite a bit of time talking about each other. >> what we have seen in the last few weeks is disturbing and i can't say i have paid that much attention to it. >> in this race it is apparent. >> a fierce battle, something south carolina voters will have to navigate before making a final decision. as we mentioned, tonight cruz, rubio and carson. and tomorrow night down the road trump leading in the polls and cnn starts at 8:00. dan and denise? >> we have to sit back and laugh back and forth tearing apart each candidate and trump and cruise threatening. i will sue you. >> and people think it is childish. a cease and desist letter went out today and explain what happens and where this goes now. >> yeah. you are right, dan. this is kind of the back and forth insider baseball fodder that the average voter doesn't care for. at the core of this issue there's an ad playing in south carolina which attacks donald trump's position on abortion and shows a clip from him on meet the press from quite a long time ago talking about being very pro choice and donald trump claims ted cruz is not giving voters an accurate assessment of where he stands on abortion and sent this letter telling them to take the i am not taking the ad off the air and sue us. we will have to wait and see and it did result in donald trump sending another statement in which he said i may sue you over your canadian birthplace only time will ted, teddy and that's the language in south carolina. >> always interesting with the two. all right. we finally heard from south carolina governor nikki haley and popular in south carolina and finally endorsed marco rubio. how much will that help him? will it give them the boost they need because she is behind in the polls. >> it will be interesting denise and to dan's point with the back and forth over lawsuits and who said what may not matter all that much to voters and this is tanning and i believe wrap their hands around. niki haley, some polls show she has 80% support of republicans the endorsement quite awhile and not only will she put her support behind marco rubio she will go on the campaign trail with him and encourage republicans to vote for him. let's be honest, we are talking about the battle for second place. polls show donald trump with a wide lead. if marco rubio can eclipse ted cruz and come in second, that could be a big boost for his campaign going forward and reshape the conversation going forward about which of these republicans is the best alternative to donald trump going forward. >> dan: maybe a little strategy by governor haley holding onto the endorsement mentioned as a possible vp candidate. >> reporter: i think regardless who she endorsed, many people view her as a strong potential pick for the second slot on the ticket. you know, from what everyone is saying she weighed this decision up until the last minute and got a personal pitch from george w. campaign earlier in the week and it is clear she wants to get behind the winner and she thinks it is marco rubio. >> denise: all right. we will check back with you soon. >> john kasich will make his return tonight. the ohio governor is tote to appear on the late show with stephen colbert. he was on the show in november when colbert grilled the governor on marijuana legalization. you can catch the late show after cleveland 19 news at 11:00 here on cbs 19. >> standing on your box there. >> denise: i am standing on the box there and compared
