>> fine question, you're here in iowa. what's your strategy? >> i'm best prepared to be commander in chief, give me some momentum coming out of iowa. i need some help here. you owe to the soldier, airman, sailor, marine to pick a commander in chief. i'm the best candidate to win this war. >> senator, a pleasure chatting with you. >> thank you. >> we'll become a rich and great nation again. thank you. great honor. >> we have the top one tenth of one percent owning moore wealth than the bottom. >> what do the iranian mullahs conclude, keep negotiating, and its that why did. >> the thing i've been concerned about in this nation for the last few years have not changed. >> we're chatting with chief national correspondent for "the new york in the "new york times" magazine. >> u.s. for -- >> hop on he back. >> i got my own. this is not just a prop today. >> aloha. >> aloha. >> state senator maria chappelle nidal. >> senator tom harkin. >> rick cline. >> been on the show several times. >> the d.c. shadow senator, paul strauss. >> has to come and engage with the people of iowa. >> governor mike huckabee. >> the highest ranking democrat in the state of iowa. >> senator joe lieberman. >> senator chuck grassley. >> leist eaten anything other than fried snicker. it's like going to heaven. >> this is a dumb way to do it. at the end of the day, brad pitt will be in our debate, i think it's important because it's the first contest. >> a potential clinton-castro ticket. >> whoever the nominee is gets vice-president will be. >> welcome to "roske on politics." legendary iowa senator schuck grassley, how are you doing today? >> pretty good, except it's raining and we can't be in the cornfield. other than that we're just about done with the corn harvest anyway. >> how many years have you served in the it's senate. >> this i my 35th year. >> i saw you -- you run now. >> i jog from my home to the dome, on my birthday every year. that's six and a tenth miles, and normally through the rest of the. >> four times a week, i run three miles each day. >> which is much more than i do. so god bless you. >> i didn't start until i was 65, so you aren't anywhere near 65. so, i would advise you to start a little bit before i did. >> okay. >> you serve in the upper house of congress. the lower house just elected a new speaker, speaker paul ryan. how do you think this speakership will differ from, say,ohn boehner? >> i think he is more of a policy person. he is going to get deep into policy. probably not pre-empting what committees are supposed to do. i think he's going to work very hard to make sure that the. hastert rule is followed, which you don't move ahead with anything that at least half of the republican caucus didn't agree with. then i think that he's going to probably be much more of a good face for the republicans in our national image, for the voters throughout the entire country. >> we have ten candidates here in des moines today. will you be endorsing in this race, sir. >> absolutely not. i've come to the conclusion, which one of these ten or 15 republican candidates ought to be president, if i knew i wouldn't tell you, but i honestly don't know what at this point, and i hope by the time we get to the iowa caucuses, i will know who is not only going to be our best candidate for president, but going to be the best president of the united states. but today i can't tell you. but if i did know that today, one of the ropes i wouldn't endorse them, because normally, except for bob dole and george w. bush, in 35 or 40 years of caucuses, i've never been involved in another race, but this year, 2016, i'm up for election, and i assume if i backed one of the 15, that the appreciate that. >> final question, sir, my program now airs in the you're in dc every week. do you think the district of columbia should be made into a state? >> i think if you look at the history of why the district of columbia was formed, that it was supposed to be a neutral territory, and that was very essential to getting the constitution adopted, and why it was set up, that we ought to continue that historical role. >> chuck grassley, the legendary chatting, sir. >> over 640,000 americans don't have votes represent because d.c. is not a state. >> 640,000 americans without representation. if you think this is wrong, contact your senator and tell there's a solution. welcome back to "roske on politics." this is the growth and opportunity party put on by the iowa g.o.p. and this is charlie. this event is your baby. >> the otherwise g.o.p.'s baby. we want to put together an event that was fun for everything, what a typical sit-down, listen to speeches for eight hours. we want people to get up and move around and meet people, and it's working. >> this is different than a lot of the events and you invited ten todays. they have all shown up or about to show up. i would say a huge success but you must have been a little worried putting up the press release, we're holding an event. >> always a nerve-racking undertaking. who will show up? so, it's very nice when it does go as planned. >> how are the candidates doing as far as -- allotted time. >> fantastic, getting 15 minutes each and they're sticking to that. i'm happy they're goi out into the crowd and talking to people, spending time at their booth. so that's what this is all about. we want them to experience iowa and immediate iowans and that's what they're doing. >> your title is communications manager. >> communications director. >> for the iowa g.o.p. what do you think about the debate the republicans just had? >> not a huge fan of the mott -- moderators. i think they were more concerned with starting a food fight and picking fights than talking about issues. there's nothing wrong with asking tough questions, and our candidates are well-prepared to answer but they should be asked in a way that is respectful and the moderators seem more interested in beginning up ratings. >> i asked vice-chairman if they were endorsing, they said no. but do you get to endorse and are you. >> absolutely not. >> i will not. >> yeah, will not. >> we have 90 days left before the caucus. what is your job between now and then. >> making sure people understand how the caucuses work, why the caucuses came to exist, and how candidates can prepare themselves to do well on february 1st. >> you actually got ted cruz to sign your shoe. >> yes, i did. >> are you support can ted cruz? >> i am. >> are you an iowan? >> i'm iowanment from hancock county, on the central committee. >> why is ted cruz your guy? >> he is new in washington. he is one of the few who have really stood up against not just the democrats but also sort of the old guard of the g.o.p. concluder hasn't been doing a good job. he is extremely loyal to the constitution. that's really the thing he always goes back. to not just sort of the party line but the constitution and the bill of rights. >> she has him on her shoes. >> thank you. >> welcome back to "roske on politics." here with secretary of state of the state of ohio. >> we have thousands of runs out here hearing a good message. iowa show, great day with me, couple of days ago, taking about a new prom called caucus 101, it's about educating the youth. >> an exciting opportunity for young people to learn what the caucuses are, why iowa is first in the nation, and give them a perspective of, it's more than just helping select presidents. it's about identifying the issues that are important to americans, how the media plays a role in that, and designed by teachers, going into the classroom, give them seven lessons they get exposed to all of the various components, and the they'll be better informed than their parents and hopefully inspire them to go to a caucus. >> caucus 101 is a curriculum that most of the classrooms in iowa have adopted or is that the process. >> we have over 2,000 social studies class teachers. we are encouraging them. we have gotten great response. they also do a straw poll, so these young folks will which is their preferences for president and will get heard. the success will be in how much of thattary over, talk to parents and neighbors, go themselves to a caucus. some of them might even be eligible to be a delegate if they're close enough to 18. >> interesting. if i remember right from our previous conversation, this qualified as part of the curriculum? >> this meets the state of iowa's curriculum for government classes, seven sections and 30, 60 or 90 minutes and cover key areas like how candidates come about being candidates, why iowa, what is a caucus, because republicans and democrats are totally different in their caucuses, and how we select delegates. the media's role is a very big part it, and how the rest of the country looks at the caucuses. we all know who are insiders, basically we talk about three tickets out of iowa. it isn't just about winning in iowa. if you are in at the top tier you can carry it on to new on from there. >> what do tee people need to know about today's event. >> both parties talk about family, but when we stepped outside the box, put together this event we wanted to make sure this was family friendly, make sure it was affordable, make sure that even the dinner was affordable and fun for kids. we accomplished that. i'd like to think that today is the day when the republican party puts our actions into touch with our words by making that's family friendly event. these speeches we're hearing right now are very substantive, so we're doing exactly what i think the rest of the country expects the first in the nation state to do and that is allow the candidates to educate, allow or rank-and-file to be edkated in an atmosphere where you can hoop holier and be excited. >> i spoke with the vice chair and asked imwhat the thought about the recent republican debate. your thoughts? >> i believe there was -- you could almost see the candidates wanting to break in, not necessarily to get their punchline in but wanted to keep talking about issues. i really think, aside from the gotcha question, i think they're missing the boat of taking some of the strongest national leaders we have in this-country and allow them to have a free-flowing conversation about issues. there were some definite differences of opinion on the stage. think how we could flesh out the issues if we let that happen. so i think our candidates came through for us, some were a little bit more reticent than the others. losing the election was maybe not talking as much so i'm pleased how our candidates i think they made the right decision and nbc crossed i the line. one round of gotcha questions, no problem with that. one candidate said something about somebody else-but almost like the candidates were saying, we're done with nat and now talk issue, and then they bring them back. seemed forced to me, almost like, i'm going to put a wedge in here. >> you're the chairman of the iowa republican party. you have a big say in what guess on. you mentionedow support reince priebus' letter to nbc. is it possible that nbc will not get the debate. >> i think it's possible. i've had a conversation. i'm not -- can't give away the details but we have sent two or three text messages. i believe -- he did not tell me that but i believe knowing reince priebus, he doesn't bluff. that's one thing about him, the think i like about him. he make showers all politicians will leverage something with a right there -- if you read his letter, i don't believe he is bluffing. there's a real chance. >> your job is to know the real temperature of the folkness the room here. are most iowan vote north america agreement they didn't like the debate? >> yes. and i'm going to a little later on -- i have other speech i'm going to make, and i'm going to ask directly ask the crowd, what did you think about reince priebus' selection. that my be the biggest applaud. i think they thought it was inherently unfair. i i toll one reporter yesterday, my iowa political reporters, honest to goodness, i really don't -- can't tell what their voter registration is. i really don't know. maybe got a guess. that's -- you can attest -- i give back -- give credit to our iowa reporters that i don't know that. i think they're doing their job. i talk to a lot of national reporters. i don't have a clue what party you are. and as long as you're fair to me, i don't care, because your job is to report on me, not for me to recruit you, although we can talk later. >> i mentioned i felt that the lord has blessed my life, and i believe that. sometimes when you mention religion, people get -- oh, what does that mean? i tell you what it means for me. for me it's about the dos. doing the thing i felt that i'm called to do, even if i have to do things i might not want to do, or sacrifice or whatever. remembering that the things i have, i didn't easternmost of them. they came to me as a gift. that brings about humility. the fact i need to live a life bigger than myself, for member else. to be a center of healing and justice. and we saw a lot of that when he pope came. sort of opened everybody's eyes to, wow, this is kind of a cool message. it was positive. >> governor, what changes would you like to see happen before the next republican debate. >> haven't given it any thought. that's all process. i let other people think about that. i don't. i'd love to -- one thing, i'd love to have news groups of five, one at a time, sit down and talk for 15 minutes about our positions, but that's not going to happen. i don't know what else. i have somebody go to a meeting in washington, never even discussed whatever we are doing. play it where it lice. >> you served in the house. any thoughts on the new speak center. >> great. a good guy. actually he was an aide when i was the budget committee chairman. and new ideas. >> welcome back to "roske on politics." always a pleasure to chat with governor bobby jindal. welcome back. >> thank you for having me. >> your commitment to the iowa caucus process has been significant. where does the strategycome from? >> we have been to over 55 counties, 100 events. the anymore iowa take this process seriously. they spent three hours with news town halls and like to ask good questions. i want to honor that process and we're going to every county. i don't think our nominee will be base owned saying outrageous things on national tv. you have to answer people's questioned. no better place to do that than iowa. >> you mentioned national tv. what are you thoughts about the recent debate. >> the moderators were the losers. we had moderators go after mow for wanting to cut government spending and government taxes. the moderators didn't ask the democrats how they're going to pay for their new government and spending. i think the real solution is for the rnc to stop trying to control these debates. we're a free market party, not a top-down party. let there be open competition. let whoever wants to sponsor a debate, sponsor a debate. let whatever candidates want to go to those debates, go. i think competition is a good thing. good for the nominee good, for the party good, for the party. the democrats are making a mistake in crowning their nominee. >> if you win the presidency you'll be living in the district of columbia. should it be made a state? >> we have a problems to take care of right now. so i think it was purposely created as a federal district. let's fix our economy, our foreign policy other. things we need to focus on. >> governor bobby jindal. >> thank you. i'm angie daimer with iowa realty and the sunday home show starts right now. well good morning and welcome to the home show, if you're renting, or thinking about that first home, i have a recommendation for you, get in touch with an iowa realty agent and ask about our get-moving deal with incentives up to $750 to help you get into that first home. help you be a a buyer instead of a
