" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie/2shot good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. less than a month away from when iowa is supposed to switch over to privatized medicaid... some iowa senators are pushing a bill that would repeal that plan. stephanie: this, as govenor branstad lashes out at democrats...clai healthcare all about politics. stephanie: local five's nikki davidson joins us live in the studio to explain. nikki bam: right this morning govenor branstad had some pretty strong words for the supporters of this bill... it could effectively repeal his privatized medicaid plan before it even takes effect... he aimed the backlash at democrats.... but the thing is, there's also a republican voting to repeal privatized medicaid... that senator told me he wanted to make it clear that this isn't about taking political sides. (with that the meeting has adjourned we have bipartisan support) the clock may be ticking before privatized medicaid takes effect in iowa... but a bill in the senate is trying to squash govenor branstads health plan before it even can begin the first of march... 1:45:20 i've recevied phone calls about problems, angst and anxiety about this. 1:45:51 lets just stop, lets start over. supporters of the bill say the timeline is moving too fast... and there isn't a suitable provider network ready... 1:34:07 i'm still skeptical if theres even going to be cost savings because i just conference, govenor branstad dismissed 20:16:20 we've seen other states that has improved their health. pointing his finger at the bill democrats looking to play partisan politics... 19:18:09 that kind of have no place in trying to deliver the best but theres one doesn't fit that iowa republican 1:51:31 i believe this is going in the wrong direction, right now people are confused, not just providers but doctors, nurses staff and nonprofit centers. johnston says he is just resprenting the concerns of his constituents...and isn't saying "no" to privatizing medicaid... but hoping to pump the brakes. 1:53:59 you have to make sure the people who need the services are getting the services. 1:55:25 my goal was not to make it a parstian issue, if members of my party believe it anyway, i happen to have a different opinion. now the govenor said today he was concerned johnson never brought his concerns to him... the govenors plan is supposed to save 51 point three million in the first six months of privatizing medicaid.... and at this point... it is still slated to take effect march first... the senate bill passed out of committe with a 9-3 vote... we will follow it's progress and keep you updated. in the studio, nikki davidson local five news we are iowa. jack: this issue has created a lot of debate, and many of you have been sharing your thoughts with local five.. and we've been listening to what you say. jack: "the privatization is a stupid idea, and medicaid was fine the way it was. this is all to profit the insurance companies." robert - ankeny "it's a decision between profit and service. i hope the legislature takes a hard look at what they're doing and what's best for iowans." mary - ankeny "i have seen people that i treat concerned their jobs, doctors or coverage plans if this program goes through." ceo of iowa mental health provider - did not want to be named stephanie: taking alook at your weather now... the blizzard warning is over but the effects of today's storm still lingers especially in northern iowa. stephanie: earlier today, the iowa dot shut down i-35 between ames and clear lake due to low visibility and lots of accidents. that route is still closed off tonight, leaving a few people stranded in ames. "i've been here since 5:00 we've had at least 10 more arrivals than we had expected of just people walking in saying they needed a room because the roads were closed we just left dallas texas this morning driving straight through back to go home and i didn't realize it was closed here so i dont know what i'm going to do " stephanie: again brad, not a ton of snow...but that wind was the factor that made this dangerous day to be driving. brad: (adlibs weather) (brad wraps weather) stephanie: thanks brad. and for the latest weather related closings make sure to visit our com. jack: headquarters -- iowans are paying more big national politicians. jack: the presidential gone from iowa. now is -- how bills be around that they left behind? all the extra security and coordination that's needed to host the candidates has left some small towns with big bills. like marshalltown. donald trump and hillary clinton both hosted events on the same day on january 27th. the security cost marshalltown a lot of money. jack: trump's visit cost the marshalltown police department 3,596 dollars in overtime. and police chief mike tupper told me he has no overtime budget for events like this. hillary clinton's visit cost them 2,474 dollars. a visit by dr. ben carson on a different day cost them less, 800 dollars. and a quick visit by former president bill clinton came to 201 dollars. now chief tupper tells me he's sending each one of those he'll collect, but he's gonna try. and, for what it's worth -- the only candidate who asked for security help and paid up front for it -- was bernie sanders. stephanie: this year millennials will surpass baby boomers as the largest living generation . but that doesn't change the growing demand for housing more than 60 million people retiring over the next 20 years. jack: with more retirement communities competing for new residents, one facility in urbandale may have found the key to attracting new tenants while keeping them young at heart. elias johnson reports. " " rather than consider of each factor separately, does it positively public conviencene and neccessity or is it against it take them into isolate, i really think the better approach is to take them all together at the end and decide how much weight each one is entitled to in each of your deliberations" stephanie: the board said they may not make a decision during this weeks' meetings... however, they'll continue for the next three days in des moines. they all begin at 1 in the afternoon and are open to the public. if you can't make it, the hearings will also be live-streamed. jack: the iowa hawkeyes inching closer to that #1 spot in the polls! jordan: that's right and a lot of bracketologists have them as a 1- seed in the ncaa tournament playing here in des moines! but the hawks are only focused on that next game or so they say.... coming up, hear more from the big ten leaders after their win at illinois are iowa sport jordan: hear we are, 2nd week of february and iowa finds itself in first place in the big ten! the last time that happened this late in the year, was feb. 23, 2006! the hawks sit atop the big ten a half game ahead of 10-2 maryland. iowa picked up another road win versus illinois on sunday. the hawkeyes just keep rolling, nothing fancy, just good fundamental basketball. but they're not looking ahead, because they know what can happen if they do... "we've been through this before. we've been in a place where we're tenth in the country before my sophomore year and then we end up losing 7 in a row. so we've been through it and we know how to approach this in a professional way." "i think this is a special team here in how close we are and how we play together, i guess sort of like the football team, playing together and get wins one at a time." next up for the hawks, a road trip to bloomington to take on indiana, who's a game behind iowa in the big ten. that tips off thursday at 8 on espn. jordan: when steve prohm says indefinitely he means indefinitely. saturday it was announced jameel mckay was suspended indefinitely due to a violation of team rules, no specifics were given. mckay then took tweeting out "1 game" coach prohm didn't like that. today he said mckay will miss wednesday's game versus texas tech as well.. now the cyclones have to move forward without a big piece of their team... "he'll practice today, but he's still suspended indefinitely." steve prohm isn't messing around. jameel mckay will miss a 2nd straight game due to suspension. with depth a big concern for the cyclones, prohm knows how important bend the rules. "i love jameel, we need jameel to be right for us to max out and he knows that and me and communicate. and a good week this week and we'll go forward. right now he's suspended indefinitely until i really saw more on the matter." with mckay out, prohm moved deonte burton into the starting lineup and slid georges niang from the 4 to the 5 slot. a position, niang is familiar with, but took a half to adjust to. "early on i wasn't worth anything in the first half and coach told me i was the 5 and i needed to start playing like one." after a 2 point first lead isu to the win. it also gave the look opponents will "obviously we miss jameel blocking shots at the rim and finishing around the rim, but i introduces a new and that's pretty darn effective." the road facing some hard times, but coach prohm is confident back. "sometimes dealing with adversity away from home, rather than at home sometimes can be easier. and so we are under the gun a little bit now, with numbers and a little adversity, but our guys have responded to that and i expect them to respond again on wednesday night." wednesday night the clones will take on texas tech in lubbock. that game is set for 8pm and can be seen on espnu. the latest ap top 25 is out. six teams receiving at including iowa who has 11. they move up one this week to #4. villanova the new #1 for the first time in school history. maryland oklahoma the hawks and xavier round out the top 5. followed by kansas, virginia, michigan state, north carolina and west virginia. jordan: in non hoops related news. redshirt freshman thomas pollard won the usa track and field men's junior cross country championship saturday in oregon, earning a spot to run for team usa!! and that's not all! the former gilbert high stand out will now don the stars and stripes in the junior division of the apa panamerican cross country cup on march 5th in venezuela! pollard redshirted this past fall for iowa state, but clearly hasn't missed a beat. you can bet dad and a-d, jamie pollard is one happy poppa! jordan/3shot (wrap sports) stephanie: jack: we'll be right back... you're watching local five news at 10. brad: weather adlib: travnorthern iowa today. gradual improvement will take place tonight, but it will still be cold and windy throughout the night. skies will remain mostly cloudy with a few flurries or snow showers possible tonight. the nw winds that were 20-40+ mph will be more like 15-25+ mph overnight. blowing snow will not be much of a problem for most areas, but wind chill values will be dropping below zero into tuesday morning. tuesday will bring us another cold and windy day with increasing sunshine. even with the afternoon sun shining we will only see highs in the 10s for most areas. the winds will still be nw at 15-25 mph making it feel even colder. there will be another chance for some light snow wednesday, but at snowfall is looking fairly light. right now, it looks like we could get about an inch in the morning hours. cold weather will remain here through saturday, but we might see some warmer weather sunday along
