" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" " julia monat, iowa state senior: "i yelled fire and they all ran. the four other people in my tent all started running and freaking out." stephanie: students camping out for the hottest seats in hilton awoke to a big suprise this morning after some of their tents caught fire. stephanie/2shot good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. those students are camping out for a shot at the best seats for the upcoming iowa state basketball game against kansas on monday. a towel inside one of the tents caught fire, damaging three tents and causing chaos around the arena. but students say they don't want to change this "first come, first served" system where the those who sacrifice the most get the best seats. jack: local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more about the debate that this fire has started, jacob? jacob jack, it's the third time students have camped out like this year, and the first time the university can ever recall a near-disaster like this happening. the administration has talked about assigned seats, admission. but students say they don't want a change. natural sound of julia monat: "i would be, like, running without even opening the doors." julia monat and her iowa state classmates have been braving the cold, in this tent since thursday. julia monat, iowa state senior: "i'd say that's the most important part is staying warm, especially when it gets really, really cold at night. i think it got to - 10 before the oklahoma game." early friday morning, they had quite a scare. julia monat, iowa state senior: "we heard it. it sounded like a thunderstorm at first, but then the rain never came and you just look out the window and then you see the flames, like ten feet from your tent." the heat woke up ryan gabrielson. ryan gabrielson, iowa state freshman: "it's 3:30 or so and i can hear the commotion going on outside and i get out of my bed, and i open up the door to my tent, and i see the flames maybe ten feet away from me and i thought, 'well, that's not good.'" a charred sidewalk is the only way you can tell the tents were ever here. these photos from the ames fire department show how quickly the fabric got torched. paul sandoval, ames fire deputy chief: "we are fortunate that other tents didn't catch on fire. students, it would appear pulled the tents out really quickly." ryan gabrielson, iowa state freshman: "and that was a pretty loud noise. so, that kind of scared everybody, and got everybody out of get away from it all. so, there was a little bit of panic, a little bit of fear there, but it all turned out okay." despite the scare, students still believe in the process. administrators say it's the first time something like this has happened. warren madden, senior business and finance at isu: "they have not seats or a lottery of this model." zipper school officials say have discussions with that nothing like this happens again. warren madden, senior vice president for business and finance at experience that they want to have, and do it in a safe way, we're willing to cooperate with them." jacob in case you're wondering, the students say that if the group that lost their tent comes back in line with another tent, they'd be willing to give them their spot back. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. jack: firefighters and police departments will be running periodic checks outside of the stadium throughout the weekend to make sure that there's nothing else they would consider a fire hazard. stephanie: a shocking guilty plea in a union county double murder jerry dillinger was set to be arraigned in court this morning...for the murder of two people. one of them... this woman ... loretta dillinger- his ex sister in law. her body was found in a pond outside lorimor in december. days later, detectives found another body buried near jerry dillinger's home in thayer. he was arrested and charged with murder. stephanie: today in court, he stunned everyone by pleading guilty to both murders. " "did you undertake this with specific intention of killing loretta dillinger- yes"" stephanie: dillinger--who represented himself--took only minutes to waive all of his rights. he said he was sober when he shot and killed loretta and her friend, michael robinson of des moines. detectives say they're waiting to confim the second body is robinson's. after pleading guilty, dillinger declined a trial and asked to be sentenced on the spot. "wish to preceed with sentencing today correct? yes to save victims family and mine more grief" " stephanie: family and friends were in the surprising sentence unfolded. loretta's brother wrote a statement saying he wishes dillinger could get the death penalty. her other brother and cousins say they're glad it's all over with. stephanie: it's an interview you'll only see here on local 5. "familys releived it went the way it did, justice is being served. stephanie: dci officials said they believe the three were just acquaintances and not romantically involved. dillinger will serve two consecutive life sentences at oakdale prison. he's also been ordered to pay restitution to the robinson families. for one convicted newton man. 33 year-old abraham stone domestic abuse assault, after attacking hammer in those are lesser charges than before. stone originally pled not guilty in november to his initial charges of attempted murder, going armed with intent, and domestic abuse assault. he was sentenced to two years in prison. jack: here's a new one. a guy in iowa city is charged with making a school bomb threat and robbing a bank -- all in the same day. today, iowa city police charged 30 year-old clifton brinkmeyer with "threat of terrorism" after the bomb threat tuesday at iowa city's west high school. but that's not all. investigators say brinkmeyer then robbed a bank shortly after the bomb threat was called in. police have not said whether they think the bomb threat was an attempt to distract them during the bank robbery. stephanie: coming up on local 5 news at 10... our sports team has criss crossed central iowa... we've got all your basketaball highlights coming up. james: ((ad lib weather toss)) elias: monday on good morning iowa... a veteran whose a wheelchair hasn't let that stop him from doing a good deed for his neighbors sam: plus in our forecast, things are looking a bit warmer. big kansas and iowa state game, we'll get you the weather for that too. elias: we'll get you all ready to go, monday on good morning iowa.
