" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki: good evening. i'm nikki davidson. tonight--local 5 heads to south west iowa where residents are in shock following the news of two murders in their small town. nikki: a woman's body was found in a farm pond earlier this month in union county. police identified her as loretta dillinger of thayer. during the investigation, skeletal remains were found in a home in thayer. last night officers arrested dillinger's ex- brother in law. tonight, local 5 went to thayer and neighboring towns. residents are shocked, telling us murders don't happen in small towns like this.. nikki: local 5's jacob peklo joins in studio with more, jacob? jacob/bam: nikki, as you'd imagine, a lot of shock in the communities today. this investigation went on for nearly a week and a half. even in the small towns, some people hadn't heard of the dillingers, but of those who had... more people seemed familiar with had... more people seemed familiar with jerry. and after learning about the two deaths, people in town are realizing deadly violence can happen anywhere. tommy stoner, arispe resident: "i've been happen anywhere. you don't have to be a big city. so, this proves it." investigators labeled loretta dillinger's death as suspicious, and began searching her old home and another one in thayer. michael motsinger, special agent: "following that, law enforcement did discover another set of skeletal remains during those search warrants." with the help of and dogs, their just up the hill from 401 4th street, near a michael motsinger, special agent: "we can't get into the specifics of what through that started on the second sheriff's office, which obviously led us to the arrest." later that afternoon, police made a traffic stop in union county, and arrested jerry ex brother in law. resident: "it's just would ever happen in lorimor, small town. telling us, but through that investigation that we started on the second with the union county sheriff's office, which obviously led us to the arrest." later that afternoon, police made a traffic stop in union county, and arrested jerry ray dillinger, loretta's ex brother in law. wayne tucker, lorimor resident: "it's just hard to believe that it would ever happen in lorimor, small town. you just don't have it here. we don't have any kind of violence here." kevyn mumaw, lorimor resident: "it's just crazy. i mean, you just, i would never think anything like that would happen around here." patrick strange, pretty close to where i live and i've got two small kids, so i guess, it's just....everybody's got to watch it. you don't know what anybody's capable of, i guess." local 5 met with family members at the community center. they declined to go on camera because of pending litigation. i asked if anyone wanted to say anything positive about jerry dillinger, and the response was "no." folks from around town that knew the family say jerry dillinger's behavior has always been erratic. patrick strange, lorimor resident: "not from him, i'm not surprised. i don't know, it's just a good thing that he's where he's at now, and i hope he stays there." jacob/bam: jerry ray dillinger has been charged with two counts of murder and is being held in the union county jail, pending further investigation. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. nikki: the skeletal remains have yet to be identified, police are waiting for the autopsy to be completed. stay with local 5 for the latest. nikki/lam: fort dodge police are busy tonight, searching for an armed man, and looking into the cause of a suspicious death. police got a call that someone noticed a unknown adult white man lying on the ground between two houses on north 8th street... nikki: ems responded... and the man was pronounced dead on scene... the manner of death is being ruled suspicious... an autospy will be conducted in the coming days... the identity of the man is not being released at this time. nikki: and the search continues tonight in fort dodge for a man who fired shots inside a bar early this morning. a fight broke out inside dodger tap bar around two a-m. witnesses say thats when 23 year old jordan foy pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots. no one was struck by a bullet... but several charges will be filed against foy for the incident, as soon as he is found. "at this time we dont have any information that would say he is a danger to anybody else we believe he is still in the area but we're not 100 percent postive on that. " nikki: foy faces several charges including a felony count of intimidation with a weapon... as well as reckless use of a firearm and felon in possession of a weapon. anyone who knows of his whereabouts to contact them. nikki/ots: lots of rain around the metro after lastni ts storms. that storm caused big problems fro a popular holiday spectacle... organizers announced this afternoon that jolly holiday lights out at water works has to close for the season.... park was closed down last night, but power outages kept the lights off again today. they say the light display must now close for the rest of the season due to high rainfall and the city's projections that the rivers will crest above flood stage this week... nikki: and the closures don't stop there. walnut creek is at 6 feet tonight, and projected to get as high as 10 and a half feet. because of this, the clive greenbelt park and trail are closed. stay with local 5 for more closures and for when these areas are back open. nikki: here's a look at the national weather service's forecast for rivers in the metro. the raccoon river near fluer drive could see water as high as 17 feet before it crests--that's 5 feet above the flood stage. they also project the moderate flooding near racoon river park in west des moines and in van meter. nikki: the gloves are coming off in your local election headquarters tonight. nikki: senator ted cruz is trumping trump in iowa. trump taking aim at the man picking up those crucial points. cruz now with a ten point lead in one poll - up to 31-percent to trump's 21. but trump was quick to blast the new numbers - tweeting overnight "don't trust des moines register poll" - saying it's biased. meanwhile, dr. ben carson has fallen to third place... " " place many would choose to spend a holiday season... but for 10 year old lelani it's been her home for more than year... shes suffering a condition that causes her heart to grow faster than her body... and complications have kept her doctors busy... 1:25:35 she has gotten told a few times shes kinda like a cat, because she has 9 lives... others have said more like 30. recently she got a heart transplant... now shes waiting on a kidney transplant before she can go home... its great news for lelani... but family says she's more concerned with helping others... worried about younger kids she mets in the hospital. she would say if i stay here forever can they just go home? its her giving nature that captured the communities heart.... lelani has three brothers...and her medical stay has put a strain on her family... friends say recently they noticed the family needed help.. 1:37:19 we're going through cupboard after cupboard in the kitchen, and on oh no. we're in bad bad trouble. so they got together... and held a benefit in her honor to support 1:37:48 i'll bet we can get people in our community to help out, and low and behold we made it happen. and although lelani couldn't be here physically... technology reminded her shes far from alone... "i asked if she'd be willing to trade reindeer for cats, for 1 kitten and 200 dollars" "little short legged cats started us in our reindeer" since then, the reindeer bussiness has elijah and isiah- are there everyday "im coming in!" leading them along. her for a minute?" - "they're here a lot of the time, walk them, help feed"- moving because every year around christmas time, rebecca's calendar starts to fill up. james thanks james. moving to western iowa, hundreds met in the quad cities this weekend to meet their muslim neighbors. the islamic center of the quad cities located in moline illinois held an open house for anyone wanting to ask questions and learn more about islam. there were tours of the mosque, art displays, informational booths, and food. mosque leaders say, they regularly have open houses...but usual. (diana chan) " i think that it's important peole understand what the islamic faith is really about and that we're all friends. " (rabbi jeffrey lipschultz) "here today, seeing the community faith together showing support, especially for our community that's feeling a little stress right now...makes me feel that the ability of faith in religion can bring good into this world." nikki: more than 300 people from many different faiths came to learn and show support for the quad cities muslim community. nikki: the muslims faith continues to be a hot topic on the campaign trail, especially after donald trump released a plan to ban all muslims from coming into the united states if he was elected president. this comes after the recent attacks in paris and in california with ties to isis. but during his rally here in the metro, trump decided to focus on attacking another competitor insted. despite that rhetroic taking a back seat, other politicans are talking about the possibility of this plan. nikki: new tonight at ten, secretary of state john kerry weighs in. "let me be very direct. i believe that that kind of a ban is contrary to american values, it's contrary to our constitution. but i also think it's a very dangerous foreign policy. it's exploitable, whether he intended it or not. and it allows for recruitment, it allows for america to seem like it is indeed discriminatory against islam, against muslims, and it's highly discriminating against many americans and others who are muslim. nikki: in other political news, monday will mark an historic moment for governor terry brandstad...as he becomes the longest-serving governor in american history... preparations are underway the celebration, as december 14th will mark his seven thousand 640th day of service to the state of iowa. the event has even been recognized in washington, senator chuck grassley recognized the governor's milestone on the senate floor.
