" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie: closed down over relgious freedom... but new owners of this building can once again pick and choose weddings without penalty. just a few months ago the gortz haus shut its doors after the owners refused to host a same-sex marriage... saying it conflicted with their religious beliefs. they chose to stop holding wedding ceremonies all fine from the civil rights had to allow same-sex that forced them out of business. stephanie: good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack: and i'm jack miller. tonight, wedding bells may soon ring in again. an evangelical chrstian church same beliefs as owners -- no same sex marriage. jack: they gave local 5's nikki davidson sunday. (nat) buried in drills... tubes... and insulation... what was once the gortz haus gallery has changed... its strong message is still here. (this is the front door) now it's home to the group senior pastor ryan jorgenson leads-harvest bible chapels. they plan for 180 bodies to fill this that includes members, and former owners betty and dick 5:27:31 the oogards church loves jesus. 5:21:28 we got a deal on the property, but the well too. in the last two months reconstructing the basement...and chapel area to service church needs...(we tried to keep the light fixtures, windows) but at this point it's all hands on deck because time is running out for opening weekend. nikki; theres still a lot transformation is done and people will be in these seats sunday. 5:22:37 its going to be a church, a big day for jorgenson says eventually couples will even be married here... start with the members. according to their christian beliefs. 5:25:32 marriage is between one man, one woman we as a church thats the weddings we'll hold. the church says what happened to the oogards business won't be forgotten. 5:26:13 we have a country that we should have the right and freedom to practice according to our religious beliefs and be able to decline practices forced on us. but in the end, they're counting this transformation as a victory... a sign to never stand down from their beliefs. 5:26:30 we hope as a church coming here we can be an encouragement to the world . nikki/bam: the former owners have also been very involved in helping out with the renovation process... they were out of town today, but will be in the church when it opens it's doors sunday. harvest bible chapel church will hold services on sundays at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the studio, nikki davidson local five news we are iowa. stephanie/ots: it's an intersection so dangerous ... it's only a matter of time before someone is killed. that's what people living in a des moines neighborhood are saying about mlk and prospect. tonight .... one local bus driver is pushing for a safer way. local five's kattey ortiz shows us "operation stoplight," kattey? kattey: there are a number of reasons why he ... and many others ... says the need for a stoplight at this intersection is dire. but first we're going to give you a lay of the land here. the des moines public schools bus garage is at the intersection of mlk and prospect. but they're not allowed to take a left out onto mlk because there's simply too much traffic. these detours are just some of the measures they need to take ... just to make a left turn! what's worse -- that's an extra fifteen thousand dollars in gas from taxpayers. (nat) kurt bowermaster is on a mission to take control of the traffic here at mlk and prospect. he petitioned for a stoplight and gained at least a thousand signatures. that petition got city council's attention. "you see the cars come over this hill pretty quick, that's why they don't want us to turn left there." it's too messy for bus drivers like him to even try taking a left onto mlk, so instead theygo through longer than their normal route. "all of this just to go south on martin luther king." city council member bill gray says people in the area shouldn't have buses rumbling through their neighborhoods. "the roads, they're very narrow. and some don't even have curbs when you get to the top of the street. it's a tough thing for those people to have to go through and they shouldn't have to go through that." but it goes beyond buses. drivers have to wait a long time in line to make the turn too. and trying to walk across the street to the dart bus stop makes for a treacherous game of frogger. "you're hampered by the vision because your'e coming off a bend, so you don't know how much traffic is coming down intersection. you can't even walk across from it you'd have to be an olympic sprinter to get across." bowermaster says a stoplight would save taxpayers fifteen thousand dollars a year on fuel costs. but more importantly ... "there hasn't been a there's going to be. i just know it." kattey: city council did for the project. ideally ... both the council and bowermaster would like to see a stoplight as soon as next year. at the digital media center kattey ortiz local five news we are iowa. stephanie: we want to hear from you. have you had troubles at this intersection? let us know. you can post you thoughts on twitter and facebook. or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think! the contact information is on your screen. jack: a fire severely damages a family owned business last night. it happened at the pella coffee cup cafe, on east oskaloosa street. "firetruck sirens" this video taken by the local flames shooting from the roof. by this morning, only a crumbled shell was left. the family had just renovated the entire cafe and had a grand opening back in june. now they're not sure what- if anything- can be salvaged. investigators think the fire may have started near the attic. " " they feel bad, they were starting a new business in pella have one in sully, it was going and now this is a big knock for them" " so far, there's no "official" cause of that fire. stephanie: new details in an eastern iowa shooting. police twll us who is involved...and possibly why it happened. stephanie: polic say robert l. mayes went on a shooting rampage yesterday in what's believed to have been a domestic issue between him and his estranged wife. mayes went to his wife's work in davenport and started shooting. that office was near the navy recruitment center. then he went to his father in law's workplace in bettendorf, where more shots were fired. police tracked mayes down later but he shot himself before they could arrest him. jack: coming up on local 5 news at 10... as donald trump slides down in the polls, he vents to voters in sioux city about taking second place. jack: but, there's people outside that rally who say their town, and their school, is no place for a candidate like trump. we'll show you why. stephanie: and later in sports, fred hoiberg had his first game of the regular nba season with the bulls, can he take this team to the heights he lead the cyclones? brad: ((ad lib weather toss)) tomorrow on good morning iowa... talk about old school.. a west coast police force is learning some new techniques with an antique weapon... plus... the leading republican candidates get ready for aother showdown on the stage...as they debate the issues for a third time., that's tomorrow on the all-new good "now, we are iowa's most accurate forecast with chief forecast with chief meteorologist brad edwards. certified by weatherrate the independent weather experts" brad: weather adlib: it will stay cool and rainy into the evening hours for much of central iowa. the rain should taper off into a few showers after midnight. our temperatures will hover in the upper 40s which might give you the shivers! but just wait until wednesday when the winds crank up from the nw at 20-30 mph! we should be able to get our temps back up into the low 50s, but it will be really cold wednesday night with those strong winds and temps falling into the 30s. thursday will bring back some sunshine, but it will remain a little breezy and cool. there is some good news for all those trick-or- treaters heading out friday night. it looks like friday will be little milder with highs in the mid 50s and less wind. as we head into the evening hours, i think it will stay dry until late friday night. that is when more rain will be likely that should stay with us through saturday morning. by sunday and monday we are looking at some really nice weather with sunshine and warmer temperatures! brad (weather wrap) jack: now brad, yesterday, or you wouldn't have been able to try your hand at a government job. "when you start out your presidential race by disparaging us, demonizing us, dehumanizing us the way that mr. trump has that disqualifies you to be a leader." "he is a bully, the school is known for its anti-bullying policies and that's what we based this entire event over," jack: tonight was the last stop for trump before the next gop debate in colorado tomorrow. jack: c-n-b-c is hosting this debate -- it starts at 7 in boulder, colorado. look for a complete wrap- up, including live analysis from our local 5 expert dr. steffen schmidt, tomorrow on local five news at 10. stephanie: polls and debates are one way to decide who's going to be the next preseident...but research shows that there's a new seasonal approach. the more popular their halloween costume, the better the presdiential candidate does in an election... but that could change this year. at the theatrical shop in valley junction, customers are mostly shopping for hillary clinton and donald trump masks. there have actually been studies done to show that halloween masks can predict future presidents. there's a theory in the costume business that the winner in every election since 1980 has been the candidate whose masks were most popular. but the owner of halloween express says there could be a shakeup this time around. brian olesen 23:33 , "i think we get a split with donald trump of favoritism or dislike. many people are coming in who plan on wearing this as a joke or gag against donald trump." by the way, if you want to be donald trump, halloween retailers say you better hurry, trump masks and wigs are selling out quickly. jack: in sports tonight, fred hoiberg makes his nba regular season debut as head coach jon: that's right jack and right out of the gates he meets king james coming up on local 5 sports we'll show you how the mayor handled the king next. (tevaun smith) staying focused. not thinking about the week after and all the other this week and that's when we get our next them. (giaimo) maryland has lost four games in a row but kirk ferentz isn't looking past the terrapins, a team that season. (kirk ferentz) we've got 62.5 percent of our big ten games left worry about those things is really kind of silly and you get defined but what you do on the field and the best thing we can do right now is just worried about this game. you know we've got a really big game coming up with maryland a team that beat us last year. (giaimo) and although maryland is in the middle of a losing streak they lost last weekend to penn state by just one point.
