"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" sabrina good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm sabrina ahmed. sabrina: new at midday today, an unexpected fire this morning, left one man dead. sabrina: it happened shortly after midnight on the 25 hundred block of 59th street in des moines. authorities were called to the residence twice last night following noise disturbance complaints officials evetually tried to make contact with a man inside the residence, when they saw a fire erupt within the home. the man refused to leave, and fire crews were forced out by the fire and smoke. the male resident died investigations show the fire was intentionally started. we will be sure to keep you updated on this investigation as we receive any new information. sabrina: story...wintry weather leads to car accidents and an interstate closure... sabrina: the winter weather hitting north and central iowa forced the iowa department of transportation and state patrol to close down interstate 35 yesterday between ames and clear lake. high winds and snowy weather left visibility poor, leading to numerous accidents. officials have also warned against using sections of highway 69, which runs parallel to the interstate. the roadway closure left some stranded in ames monday. "i've been here since 5:00 we've had at least 10 more arrivals than we had expected of just people walking in saying they needed a room because the roads were closed we just left dallas texas this morning driving straight through back to go home and i didn't realize it was closed here so i dont know what i'm going to do " sabrina: this morning, i-35 has been re- opened for those travelling north or southbound between ames and clear lake. sabrina: secretary of state paul pate declaration to delay start times for special elections today in twelve iowa counties. the polls for the special election int the iowa lakes community college district will not open until nine this morning. this delay also affects the polling hours for the city special election in emmetsburg. sabrina: and for the latest weather related closings and delays make sure to visit our website..... we are iowa dot com. sabrina: also new this morning...state investigators assist authorities in jefferson county... sabrina: sunday, fairfield fire and police were called to a house fire...where the body of a man was also discovered... the fire happened at a home on north twelth street... inside, fire crews found the body of 56-year- old richard hendershot.. the state fire marshal's office and iowa d-c-i have been called in to assist in the investigation. sabrina: and a sunday car accident in eastern iowa claims the life of an 18-year-old... the accident happened just south of eldridge... the iowa state patrol says the car left the culvert....causin g significant damage..then caught fire. 18-year-old mitchell hayes of davenport was killed in the crash...with two other teens injured as well. the accident remains under investigation... sabrina: the proposed bakken pipeline project is the focus of hearings this week for the board... iowa remains the hasn't approved would run 346 miles diagnolly across the state. the project is more than three during monday's hearing the board deliberated over the environmental and economic impact of the project... " i just think we need to slow down a little bit, reconsider this and i wanted to throw my hat in the ring. i'm not speaking for all republicans but i am speaking for my 60 thousand constitutents. the govenors plan is supposed to save 51 point three million in months of medicaid.... repealing the plan passed out of committe with a 9-3 vote... though it is not expected to make it through the house, and if it did, would be vetoed by the governor. the plan is expected to take effect march first... sabrina: meanwhile, gun suppressors are also a topic at the state house...with the iowa firearms coalition, the nra, and the american suppressor association working together on the legislation. organizations say leading cause for the measure is improving hearing safety for gun owners.
