" "its a scary corner, it needs all the protection they can get. " " we weigh safety versus costs in a situation like that. if this makes students safer we won't hestitate " amanda: the student has been released from the hospital. police say he only had minor injuries because he was wearing his bike helmet. no charges have been filed. amanda: monday brough an update in the search for justice for jayda...the five- year-old who died last year after overdosing on morphine inside of her mothers apartment. her mothers then boyfriend, deshaun trombone, was sentenced to 65 years in prison for jayda's death.. and yesterday, her mother accepted a guilty plea deal. "(if it's such a slam dunk proposal, why don't des moines investors put in their money?) mister draper. he knows my stance) " amanda: city leaders admit the project wasn't profitable enough for private entities. the hotel will be three hundred and thirty rooms. it's expected to years. amanda: backlash over a plan to privatize program, governor terry branstad is still with the takeover that first. the governor is defending his decision by saying 25 other states have made similar. this will affect more than 560- thousand iowans. "anytime there's big money at stake and a particular bidder doesn't get it, it's not surprising they may try to go to court. we're not going to be fearful of that and we feel that the appropriate proceedures were followed. " amanda: branstad says the takeover will save the state money, streamline the process, and prevent confusion over prescriptions. the iowa department of human services will be available this evening for a medicaid enrollment event. that starts at 5- 30 in the polk county river place. amanda: and in our national political history-- juneteenth honors the date that president lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, freeing slaves in the u-s... in iowa, it is celebrated on the third saturday in june... a press conference will be held today at the polk county senior center reguarding the celebrations future. major changes in the custodian ship of the iowa juneteenth observance will be announced. amanda : coming up on local 5 news midday... the aftermath of accusations of russia's olympic athletes doping up for the 2012 olympics-- amanda : and... who wants to be your friend on facebook? find our why our nation's leader may be friend requesting you-- amanda: next.... the fight for 15 takes to the streets today, national raise in "your wathcing local 5 news midday in hd with amanda krenz and we are iowas most accurate forecast. this is local 5 midday. we are iowa (music sting)" amanda: workers from 270-cities are expected to walk out on their jobs, demanding a living wage of 15-dollars an hour and the right to unionize. joining the fight for 15 movement is the bernie sanders campaign....volun teers with the candidates campaign will be part of protests in iowa....including one planned at the mc-donald's on forest avenue this afternoon. thousands of protesters will also make their voices heard tonight at the republican presidential debate. amanda: and in new york this morning-- workers at a brooklyn mcdonald's, joined by other fast food employees, walked out of their jobs to join the fight for 15 demand for 15 dollar an hour minimum wage, shortly after the event started, new york mayor bill de blasio spoke for a few moments to show his supports for a higher minimum wage for all workers. " in our one nyc plan, in our vision for the future of the city, we show that you can get nearly 800,000 new yorkers out of poverty, if you give them a 15 dollar minimum wage. it's as simple as that--it's a big difference maker for our families" amanda: new york governor andrew cuomo supports the higher wage as well. cuomo's administration has ordered a $15-an-hour minimum wage for fast-food workers to be in place by 2018 in the city and by 2021 in the rest of the state. "here's what we find over and over--if you give people better wages, they spend that money. they spend it at their local bodegas, they spend it in their communities. it actually increases employment. so i understand why any small business owner would be concerned in the first instance, but what we find is--when people have money, they spend it, and it improves the economy amanda: a sad day today for the music world-- legendary new orleans musician and composer allen toussaint has died after suffering a heart attack following a concert he performed in the spanish capital. madrid emergency services spokesman javier ayuso says rescue workers were called to toussaint's hotel early monday morning and managed to revive him after he suffered a heart attack. but ayuso says the 77-year-old toussaint stopped breathing during the ambulance ride to the hospital and efforts to revive him again were unsuccessful. amanda sam is back now... sam you better get out and enjoy our warm day because tomorrow we bring rain back into the forecast followed by some serious cold. tuesday is going to be a partly sunny day with highs in the lower 60s with a strong southeasterly breeze. tonight there will be mostly cloudy skies with low temps in the low 50s. wednesday we are going to see cloudy skies with rain and thunderstorms starting in the afternoon and lasting, at times off and on, "now, we are iowa's most accurate forecast with meteorologist sam schreier. certified by weatherrate the independent weather experts" sam weather adlib: you better get out and enjoy our warm day because tomorrow we bring rain back into the forecast followed by some serious cold. tuesday is going to be a partly sunny day with highs in the lower 60s with a strong southeasterly breeze. tonight there will be mostly cloudy skies with low temps in the low 50s. wednesday we are going to see cloudy skies with rain and afternoon and lasting, at times off and on, through the evening. there is the possibility of a few severe storms mainly in south and southeastern iowa with strong winds and an isolated tornado as the main threats. after the rain passes we are going to see very windy and cold conditions move through the state thursday and friday with highs dropping into the 50s and 40s by the weekend. next weekend is looking very nice with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s. sam: amanda: amanda: amanda: tomorrow, the nation will pause to honor the men and women who risk their lives for our freedom. but thanks to their barbers....some have gotten a head start celebrating veterans... how? by sporting a look that is often associated with the military. you may have already seen the hashtag buzz cuts showing up on social media... an american legion post in nebraska teamed up with a barber to host a buzz cut challenge to raise money....and show support for veterans.
