(nina turner/ former state senator) "you have to earn the black vote, you don't own the black vote" " nikki/1 shot: the next big three days away -- 13 states will be holding the voting that day. 14 hundred and sixty delegates will be up for grab. nikki: we want to know what you think of this political race as super tuesday gets closer. let us know for a chance to see your comments on-air. you can post you thoughts on facebook and twitter. or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think! the contact information is on your screen. nikki: traffic on i-235 eastbound backed up for miles late this afternoon.... three middle lanes were closed.... after mulitple problems on the road. first a car fire was reported just west of the mlk exit in the eastbound lanes.... then a personal injury accident happened shortley after near keo way... des moines police say a elderly female was injured in that accident. they expect that all lanes of traffic will reopen before 6:30 p.m. a house party in des moines ended with a man being sent to hospital suffering a stab wound early this morning... police were called to 27-33 boston avenue just after 4 a.m.... sando was stabbed in his upper chest.... he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. no arrests have been made so far... the case is still under investigation nikki: drake university is getting a new upgrade today. the university held a private groundbraking ceremony to celebrate the construction of a 15 million dollar facility. the project will put up two new buldings. it is part of a 55 million dollar stem at drake intiative that will add two new buldings to drake's campus, renovate existing labs and class room space, and it will create six new academic programs. the project is set to be complete by july of 2017. nikki: and switching over to weather now. we are breaking records today... and luckily.... the good kind for february.... for the first time this year... we hit 70 degrees... local five meterologist sam schrier joins us now to tell us how long it's going to last... sam? nikki/1 shot : well remember nikki/1 shot : well remember when all those iowa state students camped out to see the cyclones play basketball at hilton? now, there's a group that's trying something similar... only they're camping out for church. around 15 to 20 students pitched nas) aquinas church in ames yesterday afternoon. the students say they wanted to show similar enthusiasm for their faith. throughout the night, the students played games and watched movies. they say, overall, they enjoyed the experience, even though it got a little cold. matt mitchell, isu freshman: "it got down below freezing, and yeah, it was a little rough. some of our heaters decided to go out in the middle of the night. so, yeah, other than that, it was a beautiful morning to wake up to." chris jones, isu junior: " it's kind of hard to get a lot of people the first time, but hopefully since people see that they're actually doing, hopefully it'll spark some interest and hopefully more people will come." nikki: the students say they'd like to do another campout ahead of mass, some time in april. they hope that the weather will be better and more people could attend. nikki/lam: around 60 athletes tested their skills during special olympics challenge day. about 75 volunteers joined those athletes today, for a winter competition. athletes have physical disabilities, which prevent them from participating without a wheelchair. for that reason... organizers adapt the games, to make it possible for everyone to play. the athletes participated in a number of individual events, like bowling and darts, but even had some team events like basketball. while many can't verbalize their emotions, organizers say you can tell they love the competition. kathy irving, director of athlete initiatives central iowa special olympics: "the joy you see in their face, it's there. this is what we do this for, so that they can enjoy and have this, and do the things their peers do." bob neswold, des moines resident: "and jeremy, what do you think? is the best part of it coming and seeing everybody? is that a yes or a no. that's a yes. yeah, we're here to see the people." nikki: the athletes in today's competition came from as far away as marshalltown. special olympics iowa has been holding the challenge competition every year since 19-94. nikki/1 shot: it was a zombie takeover today in west des moines.... zombie invasion at the jordan creek town center.. seven zombies shuffled through the lower level to help promote dmacc's inovation week. howard berger who has won emmy's for the famous television show "the walking dead" was the lone speaker. berger also won an oscar with the walking dead. it's the seventh year of the event and goers seem to enjoy the scary costumes. "paddlefish-- one of the largest freshwater fish in north america-- and found right here-- in the missouri and big sioux rivers. "there a pretty neat fish, their a planktavor, they use their bill or their rostrum to try and direct the uh flow of small animals called zooplanktun and similar small fish is what they feed on." now-- siouxland prepares for its second season of paddlefishing-- after it had been cancelled since 1986. i got the chance to head out on the missouri river with members from the d- n-r-- and see how their tagging process works. "this is an iowa dnr paddlefish tag, it looks actually like a waterfall band and it says right on it iowa dnr, onawu iowa and its got a number on it ." these-- call that number-- report the date and location of capture-- as well as the length of the fish. be sure to measure from the front of the eye to the fork of the tail. all this to help state fisheries agencies better understand and manage populations. "we'll go back and uh address things and go over some changes that we might want to have for 2017." also-- if you catch a paddlefish between 35-45 inches long-- toss it back-- the fish withinthis slot limit-- protect the breeding stock. anglers can but these personal tags online-- for their one fish that they're allowed to keep for the season. christensen says that things are looking up for the season this year on the missouri river. "it's kind of a more of a hunt and pack or look for the population of fish who are there and during the high water periods those fish are going. right now, we're we were last year, so with the peak and the flow on the missouri, higher water in about the middle of march here.
