sunday being central iowa's best chance for more showers. next week we'll fall back to the 40s and then 20s with a couple small snow chances. sabrina: let's get into the top five this let's get into the top five this morning.... sabrina: we begin with a breaking overnight story out of woodward...whe re just before two a-m this morning local authorities were able to bring a standoff to a peaceful end. the woodward police chief said that they had negotiated with the driver of a vehicle for just over an hour, and that the person did have a weapon. we are still working on more details on this story, look for more ahead on local five news and online at we are iowa dot com. sabrina: in the number two spot this morning... girls basketball coach and special education teacher is in jail this morning...charge d with felony sex abuse of a student. des moines police say 46 year old gerald "tig" johnson turned himself in yesterday afternoon. a warrant had been placed for his arrest over the charges. the school has placed johnson on administrative leave pwnding the results of the investigation. sabrina: the third thing you need to know before you walk out the door... sabrina: an end has come to a metro child abuse case, christina williamson was sentenced tuesday to five years in prison. while running a daycare out of her pleasant hill home, a video captured her abusing children. williamson pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment, in exchange for some other charges being dropped. sabrina: number four... sabrina: republican presidential candidate donald trump is facing major fallout over his proposed plan to bann all muslims from entering the u-s. his idea for for ensuring national security has met with a chorus of near-universal condemnation from across the country and some have even called for him to drop out of the presidential race. sabrina: and finally in the top five... sabrina: it looks like guns will be a popular gift this holiday season. local sheriff's offices are struggling to keep up with the demand for permits to carry, and that's a big change from previous years. two factors fueling the surge...a 20-11 change to iowa's gun laws, and the recent gun violence making headlines across the country. sabrina: new this morning...a town hall meeting to discuss water quality in the hawkeye state.. sabrina: the topic has been a big issue over the past year due to concerns of nitrates in the raccoon and des moines rivers.. the league of conservation voters will host the meeting tonight, discussing the importance of clean water for iowa's agricultural sector. they plan to call on the governor and state agencies to take stronger action in protecting iowa watersheds. the meeting is scheduled for six p-m at north side public library. sabrina: meanwhile, the iowa department looking for applicants to fill seats on the brushy creek board. the board acts as advisors on issues regarding the popular recreation area in webster county. the iowa d-n-r is looking for qualified applicants who are active in recreational trail activities. january fifth is the deadline for applications to be filed. sabrina: we're back with meterologist sam schreier... sam: (sam adlibs) sam: weather adlib: today is going to be december day, although again it's going to feel way warmer than we should be this time of year! expect mostly sunny skies during most of the day with a few afternoon clouds and highs in the mid 50s. overnight tonight a big push of warm air is going to keep us staying very mild with lows in the mid 40s. thursday is going to be amazing with a high likely right around 59 here in the metro and a strong west wind. friday we should be really nice still with highs falling back a bit to the mid 50s. saturday is going to be a wet day especially in southeast iowa with sunday being central iowa's best chance for more showers. next week we'll fall back to the 40s and then 20s with a couple small snow chances. sabrina: sabrina: caucus night is quickly approaching and that means many iowans are getting ready to cast their vote. and there are plenty of candidates for caucus-goers to choose from. sabrina: but one major concern is for the iowans who may not be in the state at caucus time, and want to be sure to get their vote in for the caucuses. the iowa democratic party is launching a new initiative this election cycle, ensuring all iowans get the chance to cast their vote.. on february first, iowa democrats will be able to participate, using their phone.
