Its times square, its supposed to be crowded insane. We can make a nice little roadway so if people want to walk somewhere without walking get there im sorry. Right now it looks like downtown indianapolis, its pretty chill [laughter] all right. Weve got to change gears. Were going to talk about last nights debate, and weve got a special edition of good day new york to help us navigate it. From 2008 to 2014 David Gregory was the host of meet the press on nbc. Quite frankly, i thought he did a fabulous job on that show. But then, well, it got ugly over there, and you can go back and read page six. Television can be a very cruel place. Yeah. Its all about the ratings, unfortunately. About a year ago, David Gregory left meet the press, seemed like mutual agreement between him and the network, but hes moved on, and he has a new book. Rosanna, its called hows your faith. And take a look at him now. He looks totally chill and mellow. He does. Not like the guy who grills senators and president s. Welcome to good day. Youre showing the back of the book, i guess we should show the front of the book a lot of us are spiritual, we dont talk about it on tv, and we do it maybe because we dont want to tell people our inner most feelings, or is it because we may feel like we may turn somebody off if we talk about whether were catholic or, you right. You know, i think for me this was an opportunity to share something thats really become kind of the larger journey of my life, you know . Im a journalist and a dad and a father, but for the past ten years ive really become a deeper person of faith and been on a journey, inspired by my wife, inspired in part by my discussions with president president bush to try to answer kind of these Big Questions that a lot of us struggle with, who are we, who do we want to become . I think thats the path that ive been on. Did you find that, that you you got, you know, let go from nbc . Was that part of it . Its certainly not what started it. I had been studying with a biblical scholar and been on a road to try to deepen my faith, you know, well before meet the press, but theres no question losing my job in is such a public way, i think, grounded me in faith in a way that i hadnt been before. It was a humbling experience, to say the least. I had been on television from the time i was 18, and then at 44 to have that happen really made me think about, you know, who i was, whats my real identity aside from being this person on television. And, you you know, a story i tell in the book, i interview a number of faith leaders including dr. Russell moore who runs the policy arm of the Southern Baptist convention, and he said, you know, these whether youre, when youre a public person or the manager of a hardware store, the question is who are you . Do you define yourself in terms of your work or your faith . And that youre created in the image of god . So i started to have those questions, to get more grounded in faith is what id say than ever before. I want to tackle some of those Big Questions. Some smaller questions, though, from last night. Youve interviewed everybody on that stage at one point or another. First of all, your overall take on the debate, and i want to start with donald trump and jeb bush. I think jeb bush showed a little bit more fight, he did show Higher Energy which he wanted to point out and trump pointed out, it was pretty funny. I think he showed a little bit more initiative. I think he did a couple of things at once, he tried to show himself to be bigger, more president ial while at the same time trying to disqualify trump. So i think those were good. I think there was a couple of moments like him highfiving trump, you know, after that business the code name from the secret service that i think humble. Hell probably want that. I think Carly Fiorina layed really big. I think played really big. I think she had a lot of time to talk. She spoke forcefully, she took on trump effectively. Yeah, check this out. I think weve got Carly Fiorina and donald trump going at it for a little bit. Hit it. You know, its interesting to me, mr. Trump said that he heard mr. Bush very clearly and what mr. Bush said. I think women all over this country heard very clearly what mr. Trump said. [applause] i think shes got a beautiful face, and i think shes a beautiful woman. Your reaction to that . Well, you know, remind people what the background is. He had said Something Like look at that face, is anybody going to vote for her judging her on her appearance which, you know, women and their appearance tends to become seems to play more than the mens appearance. Right, right. It gets a lot more attention. And i think what was effective about that line without really having to go there, everybody got it. You know . Women knew exactly what she was saying, and men knew exactly what she was saying. So it was kind of a sering attack without it appearing like an attack. She just showed a lot of poise. I think being on that stage with the top tier players in the polls, she had a lot of seized that opportunity. You know, this is kind of a topsyturvy time. Weve got a lot of people in this race. You have a presumed establishment front runner in a jeb bush, but an actual front runner in trump and carson, these unconventional candidates getting attention. So theres room for a lot of slotting and changing to go on. Last night they seemed to be talking about Campaign Finances and how politicians are in the pockets. Yes. Of big businessmen. And i think jeb bush brought it up because he had taken some hundred from donald trump, but donald trump i dont know, it was all about the casinos. Listen to this and then lets talk. The one guy that had some special interest that i know of that tried to get me to change my views on something that was generous and gave me money was donald trump. He wanted casino gambling in florida. I didnt. Yes, you did. Totally false. You wanted out, and you didnt get it. I promise, i would have gotten it. And im not going to be bought by anybody. I promise, if i wanted it, i would have gotten it. No way. Believe me. [laughter] i know my people. So whats the truth here . I actually dont know what the truth of the matter is. I mean, i havent looked into that. But the this exchange highlights a couple of things. First of all, bush is trying to be more forceful here. I think he was successful at that. I must say theres just a performance quality thats really offset putting. This kind of level of discourse and the way trump handles himself people love it. I mean, lets face it, its appealing to somebody. Hes number one right now. Well, right. Theres lots of people he appeals to who may have lots of different views that i think people would be concerned about prevailing as president of the United States. Your political views, you know, rudeness and sexist comments and nativist comments, you know, those are always going to touch a nerve. People are going to ask is that who we want in our leadership . And id Say Something else, which is the most effective way to get beyond the show hanship, and heres a great example. Donald trump talks about north korea, that we dont talk about north korea. If im moderating that debate or im one of these candidates, id say and we cover these issues in washington. Okay, you talk about north korea, so what would you do . How would you pressure china . China could turn the lights out in north korea if it wanted to. How would you get them to do that if they havent been willing to do it up until now . Kick him through those specific questions and demand answers. Thats what people want, because that speaks to the realities of the job. Do they really . Ronald reagan, i could see him kind of campaign anything a similar way. Perhaps with more charm, but certainly not with the detail that your question seeks. Ronald reagan was similar in that regard. Okay. But he wasnt a mechanic when it came to government. Theres politics and prose, excuse me, theres poetry in prose in president ial campaigns. What donald trump is doing is not poetry, okay . So if hes not in the specifics poetry. Brash discourse. The point is you want to know what kind of leader hed be, and when anybody says, you know what . Im not a politician, im not going to play these games, guess what . This is a political job. President of the United States is a political job, to run the government, make government work, negotiate with other people in government, negotiate with other governments. So you have to, ultimately, face some of the realities of what the job is. Are you, like, missing not being in the game daytoday on tv . Oh, i love these stories, yeah. I love politics, i love covering the world, i lover journalism the book debuts now, its out there. Yeah. Whats next for you . Well, im really interested in addition to the things were talking about, faith to me this book is really me using my journalistic curiosity and turning it to the Big Questions in life, as i said, who are we, who do we want to become, how do we seek a relationship with god. These are questions that are hard, you know . I stumble all the time in my pursuit of life and trying to become a better person. I think thats what the faith path is. But i think that these are questions that people think about, and id love to make that a part of my journalism. Im able in this book to ask these questions of myself, but also big faith leaders from joel osteen to Cardinal Dolan to jewish leaders, and thats something as a journalist identify been ive been very comforted by. Dont neglect your impressions, because theyre awesome. How about a little tom bro ca . No. Im not doing it. Anybody else . Anybody else you can nail . You know, i do when i talk about george w. Bush, you know, hes the one who the reason this book is called hows your faith, and at numerous times when president bush heard that i was studying bible, hed say, gregory, hows your faith . There you go. So we had interesting conversations, and i write extensively about his own faith journey, what inspired me about that, his struggles with alcohol and my growing up with an alcoholic mother who was arrested in front of me. So there was a connection there where i kind of understood where he was coming from. Thank you. Appreciate it. We getting back, you know, do we want to get back on tv . Im having a lot of good okay. Im focused right now on on the book. Dealing with the book and, yeah, id love to be back in the right situation and whether its television or some of the mobile or digital sounds like its a matter of are you also doing the rounds on tv for the book . I am. Are you going on today show . No. Not going on today show. My days at nbc are over. Thats it . [laughter] well, you both got your moneys worth, i think. So did we today. [laughter] its calls hows your faith an unlikely spiritual journey. David gregory, thanks so much. Mike woods, how are you, pal . Doing all right. Got a lot of sunshine out there, everyones for the most part happy with the weather, but, of course, we still need that rainfall too. Some folks are happy but, you know what . Some wet weather wouldnt do us harm, thats for sure. 68 is our low temperature at one point this morning, but the average low for this morning is 61, so we should be a little bit cooler. Its still summer, but its that time of the year where your temps do, on average, drop down. 75 is your average high temp for the day, the record high for today is 93, and it looks like today were going to be still well away from the records. Bridgeport, 73 also in montauk, bell march youve got 66 degrees there and 61 in monticello. A lot of sunshine around the tristate region. Heres one thing thats changing on us, were starting to notice the dew points, the humidity levels creeping backs to creeping back up. Duepoint of 61 on the moderate side out at newark. Its not as bad through the majority of the summer, but its definitely feeling a little more tacky in terms of the heat and humidity combination. Our sky looks pretty decent here with the radar satellite. Weve got mainly clear sky right now, some clouds trying to work up from the south. Whats going on there . Well, we have High Pressure in control, and thats whats keeping us mainly clear, but this area of low pressure which is trying to get going in the southeast atlantic areas near a stalledout frontal boundary, thats bringing showers into south carolina, a lot of clouds into eastern north carolina, but only a little bit of that makes it to us here in the tristate region, mainly over the central and southern sections of new jersey. Pop up the showers or storms which we could use. Well keep it high and dry for the time being. High pressure also directs the storm track to the west up to the north of us. Heres the future cast, and it says thats exactly whats happening. Not much change for us at all. Clear skies, lots of sunshine, warm temps. Even though your temps are trending downward into the next couple of days, its still going to be warmer than normal all the way through this weekend, into next week, but next week our temps should drop back down into the normal range by around monday and tuesday. Next few days are going to be sunny and warm, 82 by midday and a high of 86 today, 83 on saturday, monday, tuesday, wednesday maybe a few quick sprinkles here and there, but no real storms coming at us for a while here. That is suzy favor hamilton, an olympic runner. She was this the 92 olympics, the 9 6 olympics and the 2000 olympics in seoul, right . Sydney. Australia. Incredible talent. Now get this, folks. Shortly after the sydney olympics, she became a prostitute . She succumbed to her addictions somehow. An escort. It was, actually, it took a little while for this whole thing to progress. Lets put the book cover up, and suzys going to take us through it. Its called the fast girl a life spent running from madness. It has her history of how she went from one of the most decorated runners to finding herself in, well, compromising positions. It was sydney olympics in 2000, i made myself fall on purpose. I was the one who was supposed so falling in the race was better than losing in my mind, and that was the spiral down in my life. So in 2012 is when i became an escort. So how did you get from one position to another position . Time . I know. This is going to be so bizarre, and i know its hard for people to put their arms around this and totally understand, but my husband and i were celebrating our 20th anniversary, and we thought lets do something crazy, and lets do something on bucket lists. So we decided to jump out of an could have done in my life. Okay, thats cool. Yeah. But then we also decided to have a threesome. People talk about it, but we actually acted on it. Before i go any further, i had been misdiagnosed two months before all of this began, and i was given a drug that made me hypersexual. What drug is that . The drug was zoloft. And when youre bipolar and you take zoloft, in some cases there is hypersexuality. And being bipolar, also one of the symptoms is hypersexuality. So from are the from the time we did the threesome, six months escort. All this . It was extremely difficult for him. He looks back on the whole thing and has, you know, he feels terrible that he didnt get me out. He couldnt get me out. Did you leave him . What did you do during that time . You know, during that time he knew something was wrong with me. He was protecting me, trying to hold onto my reputation as the good girl who was perfect from wisconsin, never did anything wrong. So to go from this extreme, but it was a sexual exploration that got me to become an escort. I never in my life thought i would become an escort in vegas. But you did, and you were actually getting paid for it. Yes. I took my running competition into my escorting. I had to be the number one escort. So mechanically, how did you, how did you go about it . Like craigs list . Set it up. How did you do it . First of all, i became a different person when i was the escort in vegas. I became this different identity. Did you have another name . I was kelly. I was delusional. Because of my bipolar, which we didnt know made me delusional. Were you on medication for your bipolar, or you were unmedicated. I was taking zoloft that brought on the hypersexuality, and i hadnt been diagnosed yet for the bibe polar. But your question was well, the mechanics, how you actually became the escort first, and then well go from there. I went back through the agency that we used when we did the threesome, and i met with somebody from that agency or that firm and just said i have this fantasy. I just want to try this once did they know about your olympic past . I told her that i was a famous athlete, and i had been in the olympics did they try to market that . She didnt really no, huhuh. She didnt know who i was. It was like no big deal. So, sudy, why write this now . You have a young daughter. Right. Going to be 10. And youve had to explain to her something about the book . Right. The reason i wrote the book, the reason i talk about the sex in the book is to describe how out of control behavior gets with bipolar. I wanted to help educate, get rid of the stigma associated with Mental Illness. I want to the save lives. I want to help marriages that may be going through some bizarre behaviors not necessarily that they have Mental Illness, but my husband, he stuck with me through all of this because when i was diagnosed, he decided im focusing on the illness, not the behavior. I know he was there for the threesome. Was he aware, im still unclear, about your life as an escort . He was aware. He was . And, again did he initially approve . Was he into it . He was approve anything that started off picking somebody up at a bar. It was a progression. So you did it, how many estimate you saw . Thats a good question, and nobody has asked that. Ive kind of skirted around that. Roughly. And it actually was roughly around a hundred. Money . I didnt do it for the money. I did it for the high. The illness drove me in this direction. So i found sex as my high. It could have been alcohol, it could have been drugs, and i was leading in that direction towards the end the drugs were coming into play, the lines of coke were if front of in front of me. I wasnt doing cocaine yet, but i was just i was so close. Ecstasy was my drug of choice. So you were enjoying it. I why wouldnt you want to feel up here . I was on this high, i didnt want out. Were there any bad incidents . These things, youre alone with a man whos paying you money. Weve seen it in the movies at least that things can go horribly wrong. In my book i talk about one of the instances, and that was actually me before i worked for the agency. The agency was screening all the clients. Itthey were very high profile people. Obviously, theres no guarantee no matter how high profile you are. Theres a good chance i could have been in great danger. I was very naive to it all. How did you get to the point where you said i need to get my life together . What was it at that point that was your turning point . I was outed. A client i got reckless and started telling my clients who i was. It was making the experience that much grander for me because here i am having these grandiose thoughts about myself because of the bipolar. I just decided to reveal it. One of the clients told the smoking gun, the tabloid, and he actually came from new york to find me at a rock and roll appearance marathon and found me and outed me. You off the zoloft, and did that fix the problem . I came off the zoloft really slowly when i was outed. I was sent to the doctors right away. They put me on a drug, very slow acting. Part of my, one of my symptoms to bipolar is spending recklessly. And all the money that i made in my escorting i spent on junk, crap. I dont just expensive purses, shoes. So, yeah. It wasnt good. So are you okay now . Are you on the right medication . Do you feel grounded . I do. I feel very settled. Im not used to what settled and contentment is because ive always been a level higher, but im safe, im away from risky behavior and harming myself. But most of all, the thing that i live with for the rest of my life is the pain that i caused my husband, my family. My daughter, shell grow are up living with this, but, you know what . She understands Mental Illness more than 99 of adult cans. Shes so compassionate. I ask you Something Else . The hundred guys roughly that you saw yes. What were they like, how would you characterize them . Nice guys . Were they creeps . Average . These are ceos of companies. These are athletes, actors. These are people in very high profile positions, and, you know, people have asked me to reveal names. Why would two wrongs make a right . Right. Interesting. Why destroy another family . I am curious, what did you charge . You know, that is, you know, kind of totally off the topic of the mental health. Forgive me you want more titillating, which is totally fine. There is a lot of that in the book. I mean, you give a lot of details about your trysts in the book. You are absolutely right. And i show that because i want to show how crazy my behavior god. Right. But, no, you start off, like, i started off at 400 an hour, and as you get higher in the rankings, i was number two in vegas. As you get higher in the rankings, your price goes up like to . Two hours was 1200. Its a crazy world, but this is whats happening. And it was all, basically, in hoe Hotels Hotels . Yes. Will you ever go back to vegas . I went back, i recently did a tv show where they filmed me for we went back. You know what . It was interesting. I thought i was going to feel this anxiety, and i felt very settled and very content. I dont feel like vegas is going to be this trigger thats right. Because of the medication. Well, what happens in vegas doesnt necessarily stay there. That is so good. What about this, the zoloft and the hypersexuality, that is a documented side effect. Yes. Google the two. Before you started taking, we knew that about it, so theres made yeah. This is, and, you know what . Again, i didnt, they didnt know i was bipolar. But the doctors didnt ask my history of Mental Illness. Right. Which is a key. And bipolar is one of those diseases thats very hard to diagnose and, unfortunately, you know, they if this medicine doesnt work, try this one. Meanwhile, youre spiraling these people out of control in the meantime. Right. Thats probably what happened to you with the so to loft. Absolutely. If any gifts have have come out of this, ive been given a platform to talk about Mental Illness, and what a gift thats been. The cover one more time, its called fast girl, and its fascinating. It is. She doesnt leave a lot of details out, in case youre wondering. Absolutely. I reveal everything just because, again, i want to show the destruction that this illness can bring to life. Well, were glad that you got yourself straightened out. Thank you. And that everyones cool. All the best to you and your family. You guys were great. All right. Powerhouse designer behind brands, this guy everybody wants him to dress them, you know . Including miley cyrus, katy perry does he specialize in football jerseys . Weve been playing with his food or tasting his food, congratulations. Hes got a new cookbook out, by the way. His first cookbook. Its called asianamerican, proudly inauthentic relates recipes. What do you mean inauthentic . Im a filipinoamerican, so im not exactly from the philippines, but im not exactly from here. [laughter] our recipes arent, you know, exact, authentic recipes, theyre just kind of a mix of everything. Are well, its all delicious. I want to take a look, a peek at those these are are pork buns or Something Like that . Oh, i love these. What have we got here . Those are, like, the traditional taiwanese pork buns, but here weve done a connecticutstyle lobster with butter, city ramp cha and then a steam bun. Its kind of our take on a steam bun at the restaurant. That looks good. Thank you. What are you making this morning . Saigon crepes. Traditionally, these are a vietnamese street food. In the bowl we put rice flour, coconut milk, fish sauce, salt. We stir this batter up, and we let it sit for a little while you say like a hot dog in new york is like this stuff in vietnam. Exactly. You walk down the street, it probably costs way less than a hot dog. But for here at the restaurant, we have a little crepe going right now it smells delicious. Thank you. A little time rick gives it that nice golden color. Bean sprouts, a little red onion, and it always gets dressed with shrimp. And my take on it usually it has cooked pork in it, but i love proshoe toe. Okay. So this is the [laughter] very inauthentic part of it. All right. So who was the cook in the house . Your mom . Your dad . My mom was amazing. My dad was a hard working dude himself, but my mom definitely was a cook. She was one of eight sisters, 13 total, and they were all great cooks. This thing looks a little bit like an omelet that youre making. Its a crepe. We serve this for brunch at the restaurants. You know, its eaten anytime of the day but definitely during, you know, definitely as a street food. Can you imagine, like, where youve come in the with all these restaurants . You started off where did you grow up . I grew up this chicago. Chicago. Moved to new york south side of chicago no, im a north cider. Okay, just checking. We opened one restaurant about three and a half, four years ago and with the grace of god, weve been so lucky, you know, to get to where we are and able to come out with a cookbook. Well, if you make it here, you can make it anywhere. Youve made it. You made us a couple of these vietnamesestyled omelets, i mean, crepes. Now 73, thats your 10 00 temperature central park, newark and belmar. 63 this poughkeepsie, dewpoints starting to get up there, getting a little stickier, 58 in central park, 61 in newark, so some humidity crawling northward. Other than that, pretty quiet weather condition, High Pressures giving us the clear skies. Theres some moisture and showers down the southeast Atlantic Region but only few of those clouds make it up this way. Showers and storms should not be a problem as High Pressure pretty much holds that down to the south and the northwest. Thats where the main storm track is, and thats where its going to stay, kind of skipping around the tristate region. Take a look at that future cast, keeps us nice and dry today into tomorrow. We need that rainfall, but this area of low pressure just no match for the ridge of High Pressure thats kind of blocking things out. So were going to keep it dry. Sunny skies, high temp up to 86 and, in fact, as we go through the next seven days, man, oh, man, we are lacking that rainfall, but we do get the cooler temperatures next week as our high temps drop back down into the mid 70s.
