No charges have been filed against the driver who did stay steve mayor de blasio, his daughter and reverend al sharpton served meals to the citys homeless today. He spoke to members of the National Action network saying the holidays are a time to count blessings, not presents under the tree. Im not always sure we do enough to count our blessings. Theyre not about what our material wealth is. Steve he handed out presents to the children in the community. A restaurant that will close its doors is opening them to homeless families this christmas. Zachary takes us to the restaurant providing the meal for the less fortunate. Theyre mostly single mothers and kids that are coming the last three or four years. That breaks your heart. 18 years the restaurant has been open. The last 17 have looked like this, serving people who are in this year is bittersweet. December 31st the restaurant will close. For all the gifts, all the meals, all the support, judy newton gets a lot of the credit. We host and treat homeless parents and their children, primarily mothers who live in the shelter system within new york city. Happy holidays not everyone is able to make themselves dinner this holiday season. Steve mac king found a group thats calling on a movie star to make sure aging new yorkers are able to enjoy a christmas meal. Today could not be more important. Meals on wheels supervisor gathered in the kitchen of the center for the aging to package meals for those older new yorkers unable to leave their apartments. Those that were delivering if it werent for us coming to the door, many would be all alone today. The people who deliver the meals for us every day are the only ones they say at all. Theyre essentially trapped in their apartment. Kathleen turner serves on the board and serves every Christmas Morning delivering meals to those on the upper east side. Many of those receiving food have outlived family, friends and even their own children. It means human contact. Reporter they delivered 4700 meals to elderly new yorkers this christmas. Were not blessed with warm weather year round on long island. Reporter when farmers on the east coast wrap up the growing seasons in late fall, carl is just getting started. We have how many 15 Million People within 40, 50 mile radius and we cant feed them. We cant feed ourselves. Reporter is this changing that . Its changing that. His family has grown flowers here since the 50s. They used to take the winter off. A few years ago, carl discovered a method that would enable him to produce viable crops in the off season. Hydroponic is grown exclusively in water. Reporter hydroponic farming originated more than 60 years ago. It was only recently the practice took off. This is a high speed bullet train. Dixon is a professor of Public Health at columbia and the author of the vertical farm, feeding the world in the 21st century. Hydroponic farming has been on the upswing because of Climate Change issues, particularly Severe Weather patterns. This allows farmers to cheat the seasons and its brought theres no room to grow the traditional. He helped create vertical farming, which is growing food from the bottom up. Its happening around the world, like in newark where this will be the largest vertical farm in the coming months. Youll see them springing up all over. Theres nothing you cant grow this way. Reporter theyre producing up to 6,000 heads of lettuce a week and greens like bok choy and herbs like basil and parsley. This is a lettuce seed encapsulated in a pellet. Reporter it starts with a seed but as the head grower shows us, the only planting happens in these small trays. Special led lights simulate the suns warmth. It will be planted into the crops. Reporter thats where the water comes in. All we need to do is wet the reporter contrary to what you think, the this process saves water. In the field, you could need 50 gallons of water for a head of lettuce. Here we use one to two gallons. Reporter the water is recycled in big tanks. Theres no waste. Reporter there are no pesticides pesticides. They use insects to control the population of damaging aphids. Years ago, if you saw an aphid, you would get the pesticides and blast away. Now we release parasitic wasps that search out the aphids. Reporter the head of lettuce is still alive. I understood there was something in my body that wasnt supposed to be there and i wanted to get out. On december 17th, she flew to italy to meet someone special, pope francis. Hes really special and i think when he first became pope, before he blessed everyone, he reporter the holy father kissed her forehead and said a prayer over her. I thought everything was going to be okay for the next steps ahead of me. I thought that everything was going to be fine. Reporter she came back to new jersey and continued aggressive chemotherapy, among other treatments. This christmas, her family received the best news ever. She is cancer free. The best Christmas Gift i could ever ask for. It was the power of the prayer that helped me. Reporter the family says not only was her attitude always so positive, but her faith was what got her through the difficult times. In true gracie fashion, stayed strong, very positive. She was very strong faith. I think that really, you know, that was a big part of it. To this Christmas Day, she has a message for those who stood by her side through her entire journey.
