Reporter every year doctors write around 249 million prescriptions for pain killers. Thats enough for every adult in the country to have a bottle of pills. I knew they were addictive but i didnt think it would affect me. Reporter he grew up in wilmington recently named by broke my ankle, had surgery on it, had to plates put in, two screws and got prescribed pain pills. Reporter he was given no shortage of relief. Like 300 pills. Reporter hydrocodone and percocet. It just slowly progressed. So it eventually moved to stronger pain pill and eventually to heroin. Reporter choices he made but with more and or being dispensed hes in the alone and the problem is spiraling out of control. In North Carolina, its exploded, up 680 . The past decade and half. 20 years ago when i was in medical school we were taught to treat pain generously and we were taught that narcotics used for real pain is not lay dicttive. Addictive. Reporter do you think doctors and prescribers have been part of the problem . We have, unfortunately. Again, we thought we were trying to treat pain compassionately. We want to relieve pain. Reporter last month the Surgeon General sent this letter to every doctor in america urging them to rethink how they treat pain. They have the first standard for how doctors should be pr is make sure doctors share this mindset. Weve revamped the whole curriculum. Reporter a change other schools have agreed to. Were trying to teach our students that as they become doctors they use the narcotics appropriately. Reporter but that requires a new way of thinking. For example, orioles take out wisdom teeth, that hurts. Now were training new oral surgeons to prescribe smaller numbers or maybe no narcotics at all so that adolescent doesnt inadvertently get addicted after getting his wisdom tooth pulled out. The biggest thing ive learned is humility. Like what happens to people. Reporter the countrys medical leaders are pushing to get the public and physicians to break the cycle. Do you think we can see them changing. Absolutely. We want them to get the treatment they need and then we dont want to cause anymore addiction through inappropriately prescribing. Surgeon general admits changing the mindset will not be easy but doctors have to be part of the solution. A recent study found 4 out of the 25 cities are right here in North Carolina.
