>> reporter: yeah, we haven't seen any craziness so far, but it is times square, and it is rush hour almost. but the resolution has not yet happened. that's what many came to the notion of yesterday. that's why they're going back to the drawing board for the task force today. october 1st is the deadline for the task force commissioned by mayor de blasio to reach some sort of conclusion about many of the issues we've heard so much about in times square. thursday they met for nearly an hour, but that discussion failed to yield any resolution to issues like flow zones that would allow pedestrians to move through the area and the possibility of solicitation zones. idea of that and allowing that type of zone gives him pause. >> i'm going to have to give some thought to that because in the sense of would it make it easier to control, certainly, but would it, in fact, work. >> when these clauses were put in six years ago, they were in the fully fleshed out. >> it's the tail wagging the dog over there where everybody can do whatever they want, wherever they want. >> reporter: mayor de blasio didn't attend yesterday's meeting, but those who did said they're confident they will be able to meet the october 1st deadline. as for when anything will be implemented here in times square, that remains to be seen. >> we shall see, tracie. thank you. a second guard from rikers island scheduled to be arraigned today in connection with the beating of an inmate. nakia gaels and herman. gales allegedly got into a dis dispute with a rikers inmate. she pleaded not guilty yesterday. police on long island say they have a suspect in the hacking of a high school computer system. a warning went out to the parents. they say a few students' records were brched. that information includes names, addresses, their schedules, no social security numbers, thankfully, but new cyber safeguards are said to be in place. a 2-year-old boy is now back at home with his parents after he was found wandering alone at a brooklyn park. ethan was found in sunset park playground about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. turns out he had been left at the park when his day care, quality of life academy, took a field trip with 14 other children. police sent out a tweet, they asked for help in locating the boy's parents. it wasn't the tweet that informed them that their son was missing. >> i found out by the day care. one of the supervisors there, she called me and told me he was in the precinct. i was totally unaware of what was going on. >> we're told detectives did later question workers at that day care center. fortunately, he's back home. happening today in connecticut, governor dan malloy expected to sign a new boat manager law. emily's law raises the age for operating a boat towing skiers or tubers to 16, and it also requires boat operators to complete a safety course. the son of a missing connecticut couple now facing a federal gun charge. this is 27-year-old kyle nambit of bridgeport. he was indicted yesterday by a grand jury. his home searched last month in connection to the disappearance of his parents. they went missing august 5th from their easton home. law enforcement sources have called kyle a person of interest. 4:39 now. new this morning, a deadly attack on an air base in pakistan. gunmen stormed the facility in peshawar, then entered a mosque at the facility and shot 16 worshippers dead. securiny forces killed 13 of the militants. search under way for several others right now. the taliban say they ordered the >>tack. meanwhile, we're watching for developments in south africa. on long island, police will release new details about a robber on a one-man crime spree wanted for 15 gas station robberies in nassau and suffolk counties. police have only a glimpse of him fr surveillance video, but they did release a sketch. also on long island, negotiations stretching into the morning to prevent a possible bus strike. there is no deal just yet. drivers for the bowman and sons company would like higher pay, tter benefits. a strike could affect 15,000 students. consumer alert this morning. the government recalling plastic water bottles sold at target because the straws looks like the delays are getting better. construction on the bqe, a couple lanes blocked there. also dealing with the gas mai gon blocking the right lane near palmer avenue. slowdowns in new jersey government-declared state of emergency. e area struck by a 15-foot high tsunami. ocean-front homes were ripped from their foundations, cars toppled. the death toll from wednesday night's 8.3-magnitude tremor is now 12. many people without electricity and are living in shelters. the security plans for pope francis' visit next week to philadelphia will be under rutimany a little bit later today. they're getting ready for pope francis' arrival tomorrow. they're wondering what message he will bring. there's speculation the pope may call for greater freedom on the communist island. but reports. 4:49. today lawyers for sergeant bowe berg bargh bergdahl plan to call witnesses for his defense. he could spend a lifetime in prison ifev he's convicted of deserting the army in afghanistan. on thursday, military witnesses testified that bergdahl endangered his fellow sl oldiers. the fbi says a queens man was ready to die for isis. he's now behind bars. he was denied bail thursday in brooklyn federal court. prosecutors say the 22-year-old tried several times to fly to get on board a plane. they say his oal was to join isis on the battlefield in syria. police still trying to track down the person who stabbed a livery cab driver to death. it happened in brooklyn. the story breaking yesterday on "today in new york." police say the 35-year-old raphael veras was working his first solo day when he was killed in east new york. he was sitting in his car when a man approached him with a knife. police say veras was stabbed several times in the neck and body. his family is in shock, insisting he didn't have any problems with anyone in the neighborhood. >> he don't do anything wrong to nobody. he's a real good guy all the time. come to this country to work hard, not to do anything illegal. >> witnesses say that he appeared to get into some kind of dispute before that stabbing happened. and we're now hearing from the mother of that linden high school football player who was caught on video hitting another player in the head with his helmet during a game. anita mcduffy says her son's punishment was too harsh for what she says is an accident. her son told her his hand became stuck in the helmet of the immaculata player's helmet, who eded stitches. she said the incident was unfairly characterized as racial in nature. >> i believe my child. i'm not saying he's right for what happened. i'm not saying his wrong. i'm going to stand by my son. to go to the race thing, it's not a race thing. to call him monkeys and his dad should hit him in the head with a bat, that's too much. >> the investigation is n w in the hands of the union county prosecutor's office. they're going to decide if any charges will be filed. >> video is tough to look at though, regardless of to long island to macarthur airport. sufz folk county has agreed to give the struggling airport $1.5 million. one-third of that will go toward marketing. the rest will be used to help build a new inspection station. the station needs approval for the feds, and that could cost up to $10 million. all right. if you've been to atlantic city, known as the borgata babes. the scales of justice are tipping against these scantily clad casino waitresses. a council ruled the borgata can force these women to stay within a certain weight limit or be fired. the case was sent back to a lower court. the clothing chain forever 21 says it's fixing a problem that caused some customers to be overcharged. customers have been reporting that a $100 processing fee from forever 21 has been appearing on their bank statements after they bought something. forever 21 officials say that processing error began on sunday, and they're working to correct it. they also say that no customer data has been compromised. on long island, a family is celebrating a long shot. it's going to mean some long nights. jason and kelly are the new parents of identical triplets. doctors say that happens only once in every million births. so owen, noah, miles were born prematurely in july. they weighed only three pounds. two months in the hospital before they were able to head home. despite all the work, mom and dad are still excited. >> it's a miracle. there are no words to describe. we always asking why. wow, why us? happened. like i said, it's an absolute have. >> so this is what mom and dad are doing. they painted different nail colors on each of the boys' toes to tell them apart. if you don't think the family has enough on their plate, they have another at home, another boy. he's 2-year-old noah. "today in new york" starts now. good morning, everybody. 5:a.m. on this friday, september 18th. i'm michael gargiulo. >> it usually is something he said. but not today. i'm kerry barrett. darlene is on assignment. >> chris cimino here with the forecast. finishing up a week that's been spoiling us. >> we're talking about summer lingering in a big way, comfortable way too. that's the way we start out this morning. temperatures in the 50s across portions of new jersey. 61 in red bank. the coast a little more pleasant. the city now has slipped into the upper 60s. 69 degrees in central park under a clear sky. plenty of sunshine and blue sky heading our way again. same old same, but it's all pretty good. forecasting a high today of 87 degrees. we'll check out your weekend forecast on the 4s. emily is watching the commute for us. >> westchester county, a crash on the taconic. two lanes are blocked. let's take a live look in queens this morning. everything is wide open. you'll find construction on the bqe eastbound. heavy delays here. two lanes blocked. better news, that grand central parkway accident did clear by the van wyck. >> emily, thank you. we have just received new information on breaking news that's happening in younkers. police are investigating a shooting in the parking lot of the burger king. that's on central park avenue. it is very close to the cross county parkway. lori lori bordonaro is on the scene. >> reporter: one man has been shot in the chest and is in very serious condition. police tell me this appears to be a drive-by shooting. you can see a lot of detectives out here as well as the crime scene unit. they've been searching the parking lot for evidence, going through a black mercedes with witnesses in the restaurant. a woman at the scene earlier clearly upset, yelling "my son, my son." at this point, it is not clear what the motive was. police are searching for that gunman. it appears he fired several shots. we've seen four bullet casings here with evidence markers on the ground. again, this investigation just beginning here. you can see a lot of activity out here. we're hoping to get a little more information as this morning continues. once again, one man shot in the chest, in very serious condition. back to you. >> okay, lori. thank you very much. 5:01 right now. in manhattan, a warning about a phone scam. one of the city councilmembers says somebody's been calling people on the upper west side claiming to be from the treasury department or the irs. she says they specifically appear to be targeting seniors. if you get a suspicious call, let the police know. new this morning, police say they have a suspect in custody in connection to the murder of two women at two different new york city hotels. law enforcement sources tell news 4 36-year-old joseph danclair is being questioned. he was picked up late last night. police believe he spent time with a 35-year-old woman who was found dead in brooklyn's bushwick hotel in july. then they say he also was with a woman who was found inside the manhattan broadway hotel earlier this month. also new this morning, the parents of a young girl are now under arrest for allegedly abducting their own child. 42-year-old carlos hicks and 39-year-old jacqueline hendricks both face custodial interference charges. hicks was also charged with aggravated harassment. police say their daughter, 10-year-old celine hicks, was found in good condition. they say her mother, who does not have custody, took her from her school wednesday afternoon. so the actor who lied about escaping the 9/11 attacks is now out of an endorsement deal. steve rannazzisi lost his deal with the restaurant chain
