When you have chronic high Blood Pressure you get all sorts of stiffening of the outer walls but you have the same volume going through. So you have intense pressure. The good news is a lot of stuff you can do to bring your numbers down. First, minimize salt intake. Salt draws in water which is going to increase the blood volume. Through Extensive Research author renee brown zeroed in on four key principles and what it takes to get back up after a fall. The best way to describe worthiness is i am enough. The practical part of making worthiness work is practice. Its like its not an attitude. Its not a one i wish it was a one time effort where youre like, oh, i totally get what shes saying, i am worthy. It doesnt happen like that. Its like a street fight every day. If you put shame in a petri dish and douse it with secrecy, silent and judgment it grows exponentially. Put shame in a dish and douse it with empathy, it cant survive. Vulnerability is uncertainty, risk and emotional exposure. Most of us were raised to mitigate risk, uncertainty and emotional exposure. Vulnerability is weakness. Wake up in the morning, get tough, suck it up, push through, soldier on. But that armor is really heavy. It prevents people from knowing us and seeing us which is our deepest human yearning is to be known and seen and to know love and belonging. I think we are afraid because it means we risk being hurt. Your willingness to show up, try and let people know you care about something when you dont even know what the outcome will be, thats courage. Renee browns new book is called rising strong, the reckoning, the rumble, the revolution. Why do you think this caught on so much . I have been doing research for 13 years. I think we are tired of being afraid. People want to be brave. We want to show up, be seen, try new things though its a hyper critical, unforgiving world. I think we are ready to be brave. I was wondering what do you do or say to your child to encourage them to be their best for trying out for a team . Thats a good question. Like if they are afraid, like i dont know if i can make it. But reframe it as your willingness to go out for something you care about and let everybody know youre excited is the courageous part. Put yourself out there. Sometimes we have to check the story about who they are. We make up huge stories about im not good enough, not strong enough, not athletic enough. We have to help them reality check those. Those stories are the way we protect ourselves. Its really in the trying, in the going for it. In showing up. Michelle on the plaza has a question for brene. Go ahead. What are some things you have struggled with and are those things what inspired you to write your book . Good question. Good question. Yeah. Of course. Putting work out into the world. For me a book, but not just that. Trying to make a contribution in a hyper critical world, you stay afraid all the time. Dont look at comments. So for me, i want to live a brave life. If you are brave enough often enough, youre going to fall. I thought, this is not a book for people who have fallen but people who are brave enough to try. The name of it, rising strong. We have a twitter question from lauren bowmap. How do we not shut down after sharing feelings about pain and being told to be more positive. Thats the worst. It is. You can understand why someone may say to be more positive but it makes you feel like, why did i share at all. When people say, be more positive they are saying im not in. We have to choose carefully and share our stories of struggle with people who earned the right to hear them. Also have the courage to ask for what we need. If i sit down with you i say, im really struggling at work. I need you to listen. I just need to know im not alone. Ask for what we need. Maybe its a relief for the listener. E. , i will keep my story quiet because its not as bad as we start rank ordering how bad everyones story is. That comes from a place of believing empathy and compassion are finite. This morning on fuel for school, four vaccines you may not know your kids need this fall. Dr. Natalie azar has Important Information for parents. Good to see you. Good morning. Good morning. Its that time. Everybody is going back to school. The first important vaccine is for bacterial meningitis. Which kids should get it at what ages . These are recommendations that are the latest from the cdc. First we are talking about the vaccine against a bacteria that can cause an infection in the brain. Fist dose around 11 to 12. Then a booster shot at 16. To confer that immune any through the college age group. More importantly, this year you may remember from a year ago we had outbreaks in princeton of a new sero group of meningitis b not covered by the quadrivalent we are recommending now. If there is an outbreak in your area and you are at risk your child can receive the new vaccine that will confer immunity to serogroup b. Start at 11 or 12. If you dont get the meningitis vaccine until 16 or 17 you dont need a booster. To one thats gotten attention, the hpv. A recent study found only 60 of girls and 40 of boys get one dose of the hpv vaccine. Why is this important . This is an important one that they are only getting one dose. It is three shots. They need to be given at month 0, two and six. If you dont do the series of three you are not going to have full immunity. The vaccine is recommended for children as young as 9 but generally around age 11 to 12. This is so important to protect against cervical cancer. The new one as well as the vulva, anal area. Very important. In the last six months or so, i think in december of 2014, the fda approved a new gardisil which is gardisil 9 which the strains, oral lesions and genital warts we are conferring immune if i for more strains causing cervical cancer. This wasnt around for a lot of people. Is it too late for adults . For women up to and including the age of 26. For men up to and including 21. To the next one. Tdap. What does it protect against . The tdap is tetanus, diphtheria and per us the tussis. We know our children get these starting at age 2. They get five of those. Around 11 or 12 the cdc is recommending the kids get a booster shot of the three vaccines all in one called the tdap. Another Important Group you say should get the shot as well. Pregnant women. As i mentioned a newborn infant cannot get the series until 2 months. They have to get quite a few before they have immunity. If you are pregnant you should get this to protect your newborn child and other ifs you have exposure to them. One more here. The seasonalle flu vaccine. Is it too early . Its already available. I generally recommend to patients to wait a little bit until mid to late september, early october. You want that immunity to last through the flu season which can go as long as may. Generally once you get the flu vaccine it takes two weeks to build up antibodies and it should last throughout the flu sb season. And there is a flu vaccine on the horizon that can be taken as a pill . They completed the phase 1 study. They are talking about universal flu vaccine which can, i would say, mutate along with the mutation to maintain immunity. Last year we had difficulty with the vaccine. Good reminder. These are summer dishes while we can still make them. Exactly. Its a hundred degrees out still. Summer might feel over but its not. This is a really light vegetable pasta dish. Lets look at the ingredients on the grid. We have corn, green beans, olive oil, whole wheat spaghetti which i cook with all the time. Salt and pepper, chives and feta cheese. Love it. Start grilling. I let carson do the big grilling but vegetables i can handle. Well drizzle this with olive oil, not a lot. I will brush it so it evenly gets all over the corn. Okay. Then well throw it on the grill. Grill the corn. Its so sweet and delicious you dont miss the butter. When i boil corn a couple of minutes. A couple minutes per side and you get beautiful char marks. It looks so good. Its so easy. Anybody can do that. Thats my kind of grilling. Mine, too. No temperatures, dont worry about cooking meat. Next well to green beans. These fall into the grate, so you have a wonderful fwril grilling basket. This has olive oil, salt and pepper. Throw it in the grill basket. You drizzled the oil. Not too much. Too much olive oil on the flames can flare up. Well take this over. And throw that on. While those cook, why dont you toss those around a little bit. I will grab the corn. Show you a little trick. We have the taste testers there. Im just cooking, guys. So good. Really good. Im the griller. How am i doing . Youre doing great. Havent burned down the joint yet. I havent. You need the grilling flavor in the corn. It goes with the wheat pasta. Delicious. Those are cooking. Well cut it over the bowl. That way the kernels its hot so im using a towel. The kernels fall into the bowl. Easy. If you dont have corn, you can use squash, asparagus, zucchini, broccoli. Any vegetables. Do two, three. Anything you want. Next, we are going to throw in look how great the grill marks are. How long do you do them . Six or seven minutes. Feta cheese. You could use mozzarella. No the fetas good. Its salty. Okay. Chives and take the whole wheat pasta. You say you like the wheat pasta. Why . Its healthier . Healthier. Makes me feel better about serving pasta every night to the kids. Theyre picky eaters. The most important thing is to save a little bit of pasta water. That starchy water just almost creates its own sauce and binds everything together. You pour it over the top. Exactly. Toss it up and just one ladle. About a fourth cup. You dont need butter, cream. This is seasoned, ready to rock. You dont need anything. What do you think . Smile, let me take a picture for your mom. You can substitute plum, apricot, cherry, anything fig. This is the beauty of this dessert. Well start with the dough. We have flour, baking powder and salt. Then add the cubed cold butter. Its important its cold. Why cold . You want the cold to make it fluffy. You dont want it all mushed in there. It flakes more, right . I have no idea how to use this. Its never like the one you have at home. Its not. The cobbler has the cake stuff on top. Exactly. There are so many different there we go. Just pulse it. So youre not even make the butter into little crumbles. Well pretend its ready to go. Then pour it into the bowl. You dont want to over work it. Then add sugar and cream. Heavy cream . It is. You want to peel the skin of the peaches and nectarines. Its tough. You know, peach skin especially. Thats a neat trick. X on top. Right into the boiling water for 40 seconds. Then take it out and put it in ice water. When it comes out, it peels easily, right . Exactly. Then you dont have the skin in there. Take a paring knife. Try this one. That ones already kind of done.
