[ inaudible ] the total of 16 people, two of those 16 are critically injured, one is an 11yearold child. Of that 16, one is deceased, that is an adult male. Notification is pending. The others are in other local hospitals being treated. The two at st. Barnabas are in Critical Condition. Mayor its a gas episode. We have not seen any sign of propane gas yet, but we are doing a search. Regardless of what it turns out, thats going to take some time on how this explosion occurred. The that will take hours. Thats not going to be decided quickly. Mayor, what do we know about where these people were in the house and when it exploded. What they were doing. And how they were how your guys were able to get them out. Most of the people were in the rear of the building. Some were actually still sleeping at the time of the explosion. And let me tell you, the First Responders here, the Elizabeth Fire Department did an absolutely miraculous job in getting these people out of the building. 15 of them were evacuated by us, and one selfadmitted himself to the hospital for checkup. The surrounding building, there are a total of seven buildings impacted. The rest of those buildings were selfevacuated. We dont know if of those folks were injured. We dont believe so at this time because nobody has checked into the local hospital from any of the surrounding buildings. Regarding of a number in the surrounding buildings, that is unknown at this point. Because they all selfevacuate. Because it was a holiday, this 14 people were actually in 14 or 15 were in the house. We dont know if there were any illegal apartments at this time. Thats all going to be part of a followup investigation. Its relative youve been listening into elizabeth mayor chris bbowedge giving us an update on the deadly house explosion, began around 8 00 a. M. On mag know la avenue. Listen to the injuries, 16 people injured. One person died. Now confirming an adult male. One person still unaccounted for. Not sure if that person was in the building and evacuated on their own, or died inside that house. Also the duocritical injuries taken to a local hospital flown there in fact, including an 11yearold child. This was a huge explosion. The mayor is now blaming on natural gas. We had been wondering about that. Yeah, and people describe it as a very loud boom that shook this entire neighborhood, causing the evacuation of seven buildings. Lets go to brian thompson, hes been there all morning long, you asked that question to the mayor, brian. Reporter and those two burn victims, the critical ones were taken to st. Barnabas, which has the special burn unit where they are medivacced too. Thats an indication of how serious the injuries are. Lets look at some of the scene as we saw it earlier this morning down here on magnolia avenue in elizabeth, where these homes were the explosion absolutely rocking the house. Several neighboring houses as well, both on the sides and behind them. People were shocked, people inside we were told were crying. Through the debris of the one house that had actually blew up. The explosion originally identified on the second floor, but as you heard from the mayor, it is still under investigation as to what exactly caused that explosion other than the belief that it is some sort of gas leak. Listen now to the people who were actually in the neighborhood next door as they described what they saw and heard. I was woken up, knocked out of the bed. I didnt know what happened. I didnt know until i came outside what happened. I thought a plane had crashed or something. I dont know. I was going get a tea, and i heard the explosion. And i looked down the street, i seen the lady, she fell, i guess the lady was walking by or something. And then my friend, i told her, and she said thats my house, thats my house. Reporter now news 4 got an exclusive look inside one of those homes that was so heavily y ly ily damaged as a fireman was coming through to do a life safety check, looking in closets, bathrooms, tubs, underneath beds to make sure there were no victims, ian while we were there, we will have an exclusive interview with the residents of that house later this afternoon. Where he actually just spoke to one of the victims of this explosion. Michael. Reporter thats right, rob. Wayne shepards hands were still shaking adjust few moments ago. That he lives next door to the home that exploded, and he tells me, last night, he smelled a faint smell of gas. He went to sleep and in his words, he woke up to a nightmare. Heres what he told us. I thought it was a dream. And once i was up, you know, we hear planes fly over low all the time, fly over, and i thought a plane had crashed. Reporter how is your family . Theyre okay. Theyre troopers. Theyre probably doing better than i am. Anybody watching this and listening to this, if you smell gas, call the appropriate people. It may be nothing, but its better to find out its nothing than to go through Something Like this. Reporter now luckily, wayne and his family escaped with minor injuries. He told me his eyes are still burning, but otherwise hes still okay. Five patients were brought here to the hospital, four being treated and released, another will be kept here for evaluation. Now while most of the injuries here are minor, as we have heard, one person was killed, two others in Critical Condition including an 11yearold child. Still one person unaccounted for. But even for people like wayne who have minor injuries. Theres nothing minor about this for them. He tells me, hes lost everything, and at this point, he doesnt know where he and his family are going to stay or go. Right now hes just grateful theyre all alive. Big news in the world of Fantasy Sports today. New yorks attorney general sent cease and desist letters to draftkings and fandual. Two online Fantasy Sports companies. Youve probably seen the ads all over the place, especially during nfl games. They are doing big business. News 4s Carrie Barrett is here with the story. Reporter very big business, but maybe no longer. The attorney general laying the hammer down on draft kings and fandual. Forcing members of both to find somewhere else to play. If youve watched any football at all this season, youve probably seen the commercials. Fantasy sports contests where some armchair quarterbacks are winning big. But now, in new york state, it may be game over. On tuesday, new yorks attorney general sent cease and desist letters to fan dual and d ift kings, two major online Fantasy Sports companies. Saying their operations constitute illegal gambling. The Attorney Generals Office tells nbc news, it is clear that draft kings and fan dual with the leader in a scheme, intended to evade the law and flee sports fans across the country. This is just the latest action against the industry. Last month, nevada gaming officials ruled Companies Like fan dual and draftking should be considered gambling. At minimum, if its allowed to continue, youre going to see a lot more disclosure and warnings. I think the days of daily Fantasy Sports, as we know, are numbered numbered. Reporter they have spent more than 100 million in advertising, and earlier this year, fandual said it was signing up 20 to 30,000 players every day. A spokesperson for the draftkings released a statement saying, Fantasy Sports were not gambling with, but a game of skill, and new yorks actions today are an unfortunate example of a State Government stifling innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. Fandual Just Announced they will issue a legal challenge to this. Draftkings could do the same. In a statement, fandual accused the attorney general of seeking press coverage saying we have operated openly and lawfully in new york for several years. And this years veterans day parade including a veterans of all areas. Active duty, members of the military, and local and national marching bands. Now, for more than 90 years, spectators have gathered here to watch the parade and to honor the men and women who have served our country, both here and abroad. Well before the parade got under way, the mayor and other dignitaries gathered in Madison Square park for a solemn wreathlaying and a gun salute. I spoke with one veteran in the park who told me why today is so important to him. And for our country. Well, i want them to remember their freedoms not free. And that people, people have to remember to honor the service that men and women perform, be patient with them, welcome them home. University of Missouri Police have identified the man they say issued racial threats against black students and faculty on the campus. 19yearold hunter park allegedly posted mass shooting threats on the anonymous messaging app. University police will only say that park was not found on campus, but is in custody. The threat comes after a week of heightened emotion and protest at the columbia, missouri, campus.
