live from studio 3c in rockefeller center, this is news 4 new york. >> now at 11:00, subway platform shocker. tonight the hunt for a group of men wanted for stabbing a rider three times in the back. then -- >> there's a -- >> trouble at la guardia. a gaping hole on a runway triggers a big backup for arriving and departing flights. showdown in miami. hillary clinton and bernie sanders clash over wall street bonuses and other issues one day after the vermont senator's stunning victory. good evening, i'm sibila vargas. >> and i'm chuck scarborough. a man stabbed three times n the back. tonight his attackers are on the loose. >> it comes as police beef up patrols on the subways to tackle the rise in crime. the stabbing happened on the j line. checkey beckford is at jamaica hospital where the victim is checkey? >> reporter: sibila, police say that victim was brought here in serious but stable condition, as you mentioned, stabbed not once but three times earlier tonight at the cypress hills station. it is just the latest in a string of incidents that have turned subway platforms into crime scenes. is off pictures show the victim, a stab wound to the chest on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. >> he was like in i guess in a wheelchair. the emt was bringing him out. >> reporter: joseph rivera was amid the chaos on the platform at the crescent street station after a fight broke out between a group of men around 4:30. >> i believe he might have got jumped by a whole bunch of kids. because a whole bunch of young kids went this way. ewas pretty crazy. >> reporter: the group scattered, no where to be found. but an mta worker seen here make agrisly find, the possible knife left behind on the tracks. he picks it up and places on the platform for detectives. late in the evening, nypd evidence out of the station. the latest scene of violence on new york city subways that have seen an uptick in knife-related attacks and incidents. >> and i'm sorry that it happened here. i might have t switch my stop up and take an alternative. >> reporter: police have since beef upped patrols on the subway, but some riders tell us being attacked is something they worry about and take precautions to prevent. >> it's bad. because you can't even stand next to the door. if you sit next to the door, you're a victim. >> reporter: and so far no arrests in this case. police say they're still trying to determine if the victim was an innocent bystander or involved in that fight on the platform. meanwhile, police have been warning riders over the past few weeks to pay attention to their surroundings, and if they see something, to say something. in jamaica queens tonight, york. >> thank you. new tonight, we are getting a clear image of a man police subway tracks in greenwich the attack happened last month at the west fourth station. the 39-year-old victim managed to climb back up on to the platform on his own. he did suffer some bruising. in a separate incident this past weekend, a teenager survived being pushed into the path of a train in queens. a huge pothole on a runway in la guardia airport caused quite a few headaches tonight. the crater has been fixed but there are still flight delays and mounting frustration ray villeda is at the airport for us. >> reporter: a large pothole is to blame for hours of backup in the sky, on the runway, and in the terminal. but while the hole has been patched up, the travel woes still linger. inside la guardia airport a, mildred vazquez's family is waiting for their vacation to start. they'll be waiting for several hours. >> i asked a guy what's going on? perfect weather here. perfect weather in orlando. he said they went out. there was something wrong with the runway. a pothole shut down runway 1-3, causing ifelays for folks take off and landing there are only two runways at la guardia. so the emergency repairs cause adam know effect of delays. the pothole was discovered just after 3:00 wednesday afternoon by pilots. >> there is a bunch of debris on the runway just off the right side. we'll. >> reporter: crews rushed quickly to repair the damage, to fill in the missing chunk of concrete roughly eight feet by two feet as planes arriving circled above. >> in miami we sat on the plane for another 45 minutes before we took off. and we circled for another half hour, 45 minutes before we landed here. >> reporter: as you pull into la guardia, you can see the backup this has caused. take a look at the line of airplanes getting ready to take off. folks tell me on twitter they have waited in that line for hours. >> they sthaed the inbound flight from montreal we were going to be on was delayed. so that was first delayed a half hour. then it went to over an hour. then it was two and a half hours. >> reporter: in terminal b, frustration of waiting, with boards showing delays and a passenger filled planes waiting to take off. >> so we have to sit here and wait with three kids. >> reporter: how frustrating is this? >> very. >> reporter: and hopefully she'll be this the air soon. now the big question tonight is what caused that pothole. it's still unclear fit was the warm weather or a hard landing by a plane here. they're still investigating that now that pothole has been fixed. but i checked the boards before we went on the air there are still some delays. folks, if you're flying out tomorrow, check with your airline. live at la guardia tonight, i'm ray villeda, news 4 new york. >> thank you. new tonight, a third suspect in last night's police involved shooting is in custody. now we're seeing the moments that led up to that shooting. police say the minivan had drug dealers inside. sources tell us an undercover drug buy was made in bushwick and then the officers moved in. the driver took off, dragging officer gladstone who was still partly in the passenger side. the driver was hit twice. gladstone was struck in the shoulder by friendly fire. he is the sixth nypd officer shot in the line of duty in the past two months. tonight hundreds of people turned out in queens to remember a store owner and a father of two whose life was cut short. martin quiej was beaten with a metal pipe over the weekend. his family is urging justice and urging police to find the second man involved in his death. michael george is in woodside with the story. michael? >> reporter: well, sibila, for the last five hours, loved ones have been keeping vigil and leaving messages of support for martin and his family. tonight we spoke with his wife and his son, and news 4 investigates is looking deeper into the background police say is responsible for the attack. hundreds on the street, calling for justice for martin quiej, a father of two killed trying to break up fight. martin's 9-year-old son, who shares his name, spoke about his father. >> he is an angel right now. and i want god to -- to keep him safe right, up there. >> reporter: martin's wife guadalupe says it's been a trying time for her and her children. >> i eel so sad. this is terrible. >> he came from guatemala for a better future here. he has h own party store. and now he lost everything. >> reporter: the family still has unanswered questions about the atack that took martin's life. this new self-shows martin in the white shirt swinging an object as another man swings a lead pipe at him. news 4 obtained exclusive video which shows what happened seconds earlier. >> nosy? you want to find out what the [ bleep ] is going on? a man screams at another man, yelling threats and anti-mexican slurs for four minutes. martin appears to try to break up the fight. the lead pipe. martin was declared brain dead sunday night. police arrested 21-year-old victor mendoza. 4 investigates looked into his background and learned mendoza has six prior arrests. the records are sealed. but family members want to know why the second person seen in the video hasn't been arrested as well. >> and my message to that second person is to come forward. >> reporter: and family members continue to leave messages here tonight. now, i did speak with police, and they tell me they only believe one person is responsible for this attack. victor mendoza. and they say that mendoza is facing charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon. but the d.a.'s office tells me now that martin has died, they are looking into the possibility of more serious charges. we're live in woodside, mic el george, news 4 new york. >> michael, thank you. police just released video of suspects wanted in another violent attack. this one in monument walk in fort green, brooklyn. police say two guys held down the 19-year-old victim as he struggled to get away. police say he then hit the teen in the face with a baseball bat. we're not showing that portion of the video. the victim did suffer numerous injuries. if you have any information about these three men, please call police. now for the race for the white house. hillary clinton and bernie sanders faced off in their eighth debate. they tussled over immigration and other issues in front of a mainly latino audience. abc's jay gray is there with the story. >> reporter: hillary clinton came out confident as the front-runner. >> i'm continuing to work hard for every single vote. >> reporter: while bernie sanders is riding a wave of momentum after an upset win in last night's michigan primary. >> when we began this campaign, i was 3% in the polls. i was probably 60 or 70 points behind the secretary. we have come a long way in ten months. >> reporter: donald trump doesn't take the stage until tomorrow with the rest of the republican candidates during their debate stil wil. he was the focus early for the democrats. calling mexicans rapists. >> i think that the american people are never going to elect a president who insults mexicans. >> reporter: next, the discussion turned to immigration, each taking swipes at the other. >> madam secretary, he will match my record against yours any day of the week. >> reporter: but ultimately agreeing to what they would do as president. >> the undocumented people living in our country, i do not want to see them deported. i want to see them on a pass to citizenship. >> i will not deport children from the united states of america. >> can you promise not to deport immigrants who don't have a criminal record? okay. >> that's what they're saying. >> i think i'm one of them. i think i can handle that for tomorrow. now after that, a different story. it is going to cool down a bit after tomorrow. not dramatically, though. i'll tell you what i mean coming up there is also some rain in the forecast. and we're tracking that for you. here is a look outside right now. our view is on rockefeller plaza. pretty nice out there this evening. a matter of fact, probably a lot of puddles on the ice rink now after 70-degree temperatures today. but our current reading of 69 is record high for the day. we've already broken game. the previous record was set in 2000, and it was 69 degrees. and today we were up to 77 in the parks. so a new record high in central park. the average daytime high, this time of year is 47. so 30 degrees above average today. that's a big jump. and tomorrow no difference. maybe a little bit cooler or at least a few degrees lower than that. but the record warmth will continue. clouds are on the increase, though, and they will see a few light showers tomorrow. then the temperatures cool down. 60s on friday with a ew showers early in the morning. we're not talking all day. it should clear out in the afternoon and be a nice day.
